Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown strong generalization abilities to excel in various tasks, including emotion support conversations. However, deploying such LLMs like GPT-3 (175B parameters) is resource-intensive and challenging at scale. In this study, we utilize LLMs as “Counseling Teacher” to enhance smaller models’ emotion support response abilities, significantly reducing the necessity of scaling up model size. To this end, we first introduce an iterative expansion framework, aiming to prompt the large teacher model to curate an expansive emotion support dialogue dataset. This curated dataset, termed ExTES, encompasses a broad spectrum of scenarios and is crafted with meticulous strategies …

Existing neural constructive solvers for routing problems have predominantly employed transformer architectures, conceptualizing the route construction as a set-to-sequence learning task. However, their efficacy has primarily been demonstrated on entirely random problem instances that inadequately capture real-world scenarios. In this paper, we introduce realistic Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) scenarios relevant to industrial settings and derive the following insights: (1) The optimal next node (or city) to visit often lies within proximity to the current node, suggesting the potential benefits of biasing choices based on current locations. (2) Effectively solving the TSP requires robust tracking of unvisited nodes and warrants succinct …

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to meet user information needs, but their effectiveness in dealing with user queries that contain various types of ambiguity remains unknown, ultimately risking user trust and satisfaction. To this end, we introduce CLAMBER, a benchmark for evaluating LLMs using a well-organized taxonomy. Building upon the taxonomy, we construct 12K high-quality data to assess the strengths, weaknesses, and potential risks of various off-the-shelf LLMs.Our findings indicate the limited practical utility of current LLMs in identifying and clarifying ambiguous user queries, even enhanced by chain-of-thought (CoT) and few-shot prompting. These techniques may result in overconfidence …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As online music consumption increasingly shifts towards playlist-based listening, the task of playlist continuation, in which an algorithm suggests songs to extend a playlist in a personalized and musically cohesive manner, has become vital to the success of music streaming services. Currently, many existing playlist continuation approaches rely on collaborative filtering methods to perform their recommendations. However, such methods will struggle to recommend songs that lack interaction data, an issue known as the cold-start problem. Current approaches to this challenge design complex mechanisms for extracting relational signals from sparse collaborative signals and integrating them into content representations. However, these approaches …

Generative models have been widely used in event extraction. However, the interpretability of event extraction has not been fully investigated. In this paper, we propose an Event Extraction framework based on LLM-generated CoT Explanation EE-LCE, which can generate chain-of-thought-style (CoT-style) explanations for events. To this end, we provide each sample of event datasets with an explanation of the reasoning process using a large language model (LLM) GPT-3.5, and fine-tune the Flan-T5 lightweight language model (LM) supervised by the augmented dataset, enhancing both interpretability and performance of the event extraction. Moreover, we use a prefix tree (trie) to normalize the decoding …

An outstanding fact (OF) is a striking claim by which some entities stand out from their peers on someattribute. OFs serve data journalism, fact checking, and recommendation. However, one could jump to conclusions by selecting truthful OFs while intentionally or inadvertently ignoring lateral contexts and data that render them less striking. This jumping conclusion bias from unstable OFs may disorient the public, including voters and consumers, raising concerns about fairness and transparency in political and business competition. It is thus ethically imperative for several stakeholders to measure the robustness of OFs with respect to lateral contexts and data. Unfortunately, a …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning multi-task models for jointly detecting stance and verifying rumors poses challenges due to the need for training data of stance at post level and rumor veracity at claim level, which are difficult to obtain. To address this issue, we leverage large language models (LLMs) as the foundation annotators for the joint stance detection (SD) and rumor verification (RV) tasks, dubbed as JSDRV. We introduce a novel reinforcement tuning framework to enhance the joint predictive capabilities of LLM-based SD and RV components. Specifically, we devise a policy for selecting LLM-annotated data at the two levels, employing a hybrid reward mechanism …

Nonfactoid Question Answering As Query-Focused Summarization With Graph-Enhanced Multihop Inference, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Weiwen Xu, Ying Shen, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nonfactoid question answering (QA) is one of the most extensive yet challenging applications and research areas in natural language processing (NLP). Existing methods fall short of handling the long-distance and complex semantic relations between the question and the document sentences. In this work, we propose a novel query-focused summarization method, namely a graph-enhanced multihop query-focused summarizer (GMQS), to tackle the nonfactoid QA problem. Specifically, we leverage graph-enhanced reasoning techniques to elaborate the multihop inference process in nonfactoid QA. Three types of graphs with different semantic relations, namely semantic relevance, topical coherence, and coreference linking, are constructed for explicitly capturing the …

Equipping a conversational search engine with strategies regarding when to ask clarification questions is becoming increasingly important across various domains. Attributing to the context understanding capability of LLMs and their access to domain-specific sources of knowledge, LLM-based clarification strategies feature rapid transfer to various domains in a posthoc manner. However, they still struggle to deliver promising performance on unseen domains, struggling to achieve effective domain transferability. We take the first step to investigate this issue and existing methods tend to produce one-size-fits-all strategies across diverse domains, limiting their search effectiveness. In response, we introduce a novel method, called STYLE, to …

Text watermarking has emerged as a pivotal technique for identifying machine-generated text. However, existing methods often rely on arbitrary vocabulary partitioning during decoding to embed watermarks, which compromises the availability of suitable tokens and significantly degrades the quality of responses. This study assesses the impact of watermarking on different capabilities of large language models (LLMs) from a cognitive science lens. Our finding highlights a significant disparity; knowledge recall and logical reasoning are more adversely affected than language generation. These results suggest a more profound effect of watermarking on LLMs than previously understood. To address these challenges, we introduce Watermarking with …

Prompt Tuning On Graph-Augmented Low-Resource Text Classification, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Text classification is a fundamental problem in information retrieval with many real-world applications, such as predicting the topics of online articles and the categories of e-commerce product descriptions. However, low-resource text classification, with no or few labeled samples, presents a serious concern for supervised learning. Meanwhile, many text data are inherently grounded on a network structure, such as a hyperlink/citation network for online articles, and a user-item purchase network for e-commerce products. These graph structures capture rich semantic relationships, which can potentially augment low-resource text classification. In this paper, we propose a novel model called Graph-Grounded Pre-training and Prompting (G2P2) …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

How can we ensure that an information dissemination campaign reaches every corner of society and also achieves high overall reach? The problem of maximizing the spread of influence over a social network has commonly been considered with an aggregate objective. Less attention has been paid to achieving equality of opportunity, reducing information barriers, and ensuring that everyone in the network has a fair chance to be reached. To that end, the fairness objective aims to maximize the minimum probability of reaching an individual. To address this inapproximable problem, past research has proposed heuristics, which, however, perform less well when the …

Value-Based Subgoal Discovery And Path Planning For Reaching Long-Horizon Goals, Shubham Pateria, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chai Quek

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning to reach long-horizon goals in spatial traversal tasks is a significant challenge for autonomous agents. Recent subgoal graph-based planning methods address this challenge by decomposing a goal into a sequence of shorter-horizon subgoals. These methods, however, use arbitrary heuristics for sampling or discovering subgoals, which may not conform to the cumulative reward distribution. Moreover, they are prone to learning erroneous connections (edges) between subgoals, especially those lying across obstacles. To address these issues, this article proposes a novel subgoal graph-based planning method called learning subgoal graph using value-based subgoal discovery and automatic pruning (LSGVP). The proposed method uses a …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conventional machine learning methods are predominantly designed to predict outcomes based on a single data type. However, practical applications may encompass data of diverse types, such as text, images, and audio. We introduce interpretable tensor fusion (InTense), a multimodal learning method training a neural network to simultaneously learn multiple data representations and their interpretable fusion. InTense can separately capture both linear combinations and multiplicative interactions of the data types, thereby disentangling higher-order interactions from the individual effects of each modality. InTense provides interpretability out of the box by assigning relevance scores to modalities and their associations, respectively. The approach is …

Generalization Analysis Of Deep Nonlinear Matrix Completion, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves Jul 2024

Generalization Analysis Of Deep Nonlinear Matrix Completion, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We provide generalization bounds for matrix completion with Schatten $p$ quasi-norm constraints, which is equivalent to deep matrix factorization with Frobenius constraints. In the uniform sampling regime, the sample complexity scales like $\widetilde{O}\left( rn\right)$ where $n$ is the size of the matrix and $r$ is a constraint of the same order as the ground truth rank in the isotropic case. In the distribution-free setting, the bounds scale as $\widetilde{O}\left(r^{1-\frac{p}{2}}n^{1+\frac{p}{2}}\right)$, which reduces to the familiar $\sqrt{r}n^{\frac{3}{2}}$ for $p=1$. Furthermore, we provide an analogue of the weighted trace norm for this setting which brings the sample complexity down to $\widetilde{O}(nr)$ in all …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research on proactive conversational agents (PCAs) mainly focuses on improving the system's capabilities in anticipating and planning action sequences to accomplish tasks and achieve goals before users articulate their requests. This perspectives paper highlights the importance of moving towards building human-centered PCAs that emphasize human needs and expectations, and that considers ethical and social implications of these agents, rather than solely focusing on technological capabilities. The distinction between a proactive and a reactive system lies in the proactive system's initiative-taking nature. Without thoughtful design, proactive systems risk being perceived as intrusive by human users. We address the issue by …

Digital identities are paramount in today’s digital landscape. However, in the Web3 ecosystem, the absence of a central governing body leaves digital identities, such as domain names, vulnerable to cybersquatting and identity imitation. This study examines the market impact of identity imitation in the Web3 ecosystem. By scrutinizing trading activities within Web3 domain names from Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and its imitator, "Ether Name Service," we found that the presence of a newly imitating domain name increases the subsequent resale value of the authentic domain name. Additionally, we find a positive correlation between the resale value of the imitating domain …
