Shared Dynamic Data Audit Supporting Anonymous User Revocation In Cloud Storage, Yinghui Zhang, Chen Chen, Dong Zheng, Rui Guo, Shengmin Xu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Collusion between revoked users and cloud service providers can pose a threat to the security of cloud storage data. If the original legitimate users cannot be revoked securely, it will lead to the leakage of shared data, thus affecting the security of cloud storage. In this paper, we combine vector commitment and anonymous revocation of group signature to propose an integrity audit scheme for cloud storage data that can support data modification. The anonymity of the group signature ensures that users’ privacy information will not be snooped by the server. The proposed scheme supports the dynamic operation of stored data …

Ai-Fashion: Collaborative Ai In The Fashion Industry, Y. Luo, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Abstract The word vintage is generally accepted to mean clothing produced in the period between 1920s and 1980s (Cervellon et al., 2012). According to Fischer (2015), fashion usually means rapid changes and up-to-date trendiness. Vintage dressing, however, has been a fashionable trend for over 40 years. Can AI be used to predict the next fashion trend? Fashion industry is currently exploring the use of AI to analyze customer behavior and predict next year’s fashion trends. Predicting the correct next trend is vital to the competitiveness and survivability of fashion brands. Research in this area is not new. For example, research …

Gradient Boosting With Piece-Wise Linear Regression Trees, Yu Shi, Jian Li, Zhize Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Gradient Boosted Decision Trees (GBDT) is a very successful ensemble learning algorithm widely used across a variety of applications. Recently, several variants of GBDT training algorithms and implementations have been designed and heavily optimized in some very popular open sourced toolkits including XGBoost, LightGBM and CatBoost. In this paper, we show that both the accuracy and efficiency of GBDT can be further enhanced by using more complex base learners. Specifically, we extend gradient boosting to use piecewise linear regression trees (PL Trees), instead of piecewise constant regression trees, as base learners. We show that PL Trees can accelerate convergence of …

Internet of Things (IoT) represents a fundamental infrastructure and set of techniques that support innovative services in various application domains. Trust management plays an important role in enabling the reliable data collection and mining, context-awareness, and enhanced user security in the IoT. The main tasks of trust management include trust architecture design and reputation evaluation. However, existing trust architectures and reputation evaluation solutions cannot be directly applied to the IoT, due to the large number of physical entities, the limited computation ability of physical entities, and the highly dynamic nature of the network. In comparison, it generally requires a general …

Entity alignment typically suffers from the issues of structural heterogeneity and limited seed alignments. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-channel Graph Neural Network model (MuGNN) to learn alignment-oriented knowledge graph (KG) embeddings by robustly encoding two KGs via multiple channels. Each channel encodes KGs via different relation weighting schemes with respect to self-attention towards KG completion and cross-KG attention for pruning exclusive entities respectively, which are further combined via pooling techniques. Moreover, we also infer and transfer rule knowledge for completing two KGs consistently. MuGNN is expected to reconcile the structural differences of two KGs, and thus make …

Securing Messaging Services Through Efficient Signcryption With Designated Equality Test, Yujue Wang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng, Yong Ding, Qianhong Wu, Bo Qin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To address security and privacy issues in messaging services, we present a public key signcryption scheme with designated equality test on ciphertexts (PKS-DET) in this paper. The scheme enables a sender to simultaneously encrypt and sign (signcrypt) messages, and to designate a tester to perform equality test on ciphertexts, i.e., to determine whether two ciphertexts signcrypt the same underlying plaintext message. We introduce the PKS-DET framework, present a concrete construction and formally prove its security against three types of adversaries, representing two security requirements on message confidentiality against outsiders and the designated tester, respectively, and a requirement on message unforgeability …

One-Class Order Embedding For Dependency Relation Prediction, Meng-Fen Chiang, Ee-Peng Lim, Wang-Chien Lee, Xavier Jayaraj Siddarth Ashok, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning the dependency relations among entities and the hierarchy formed by these relations by mapping entities into some order embedding space can effectively enable several important applications, including knowledge base completion and prerequisite relations prediction. Nevertheless, it is very challenging to learn a good order embedding due to the existence of partial ordering and missing relations in the observed data. Moreover, most application scenarios do not provide non-trivial negative dependency relation instances. We therefore propose a framework that performs dependency relation prediction by exploring both rich semantic and hierarchical structure information in the data. In particular, we propose several negative …

Model And Analysis Of Labor Supply For Ride-Sharing Platforms In The Presence Of Sample Self-Selection And Endogeneity, Hao Sun, Hai Wang, Zhixi Wan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the popularization of ride-sharing services, drivers working as freelancers on ride-sharing platforms can design their schedules flexibly. They make daily decisions regard- ing whether to participate in work, and if so, how many hours to work. Factors such as hourly income rate affect both the participation decision and working-hour decision, and evaluation of the impacts of hourly income rate on labor supply becomes important. In this paper, we propose an econometric framework with closed-form measures to estimate both the participation elasticity (i.e., extensive margin elasticity) and working-hour elasticity (i.e., intensive margin elasticity) of labor supply. We model the sample …

Fashion recommendation has attracted increasing attention from both industry and academic communities. This paper proposes a novel neural architecture for fashion recommendation based on both image region-level features and user review information. Our basic intuition is that: for a fashion image, not all the regions are equally important for the users, i.e., people usually care about a few parts of the fashion image. To model such human sense, we learn an attention model over many pre-segmented image regions, based on which we can understand where a user is really interested in on the image, and correspondingly, represent the image in …

As computing services are increasingly cloud-based, corporations are investing in cloud-based security measures. The Security-as-a-Service (SECaaS) paradigm allows customers to outsource security to the cloud, through the payment of a subscription fee. However, no security system is bulletproof, and even one successful attack can result in the loss of data and revenue worth millions of dollars. To guard against this eventuality, customers may also purchase cyber insurance to receive recompense in the case of loss. To achieve cost effectiveness, it is necessary to balance provisioning of security and insurance, even when future costs and risks are uncertain. To this end, …

Understanding the mix-and-match relationships of fashion items receives increasing attention in fashion industry. Existing methods have primarily utilized the visual content to learn the visual compatibility and performed matching in a latent space. Despite their effectiveness, these methods work like a black box and cannot reveal the reasons that two items match well. The rich attributes associated with fashion items, e.g.,off-shoulder dress and black skinny jean, which describe the semantics of items in a human-interpretable way, have largely been ignored. This work tackles the interpretable fashion matching task, aiming to inject interpretability into the compatibility modeling of items. Specifically, given a …

Mental models and cognitive maps have been used in college business education as an instructional design technique, assessment tool, and learning strategy. The authors propose a novel use of mental models and cognitive maps as a device to elicit students’ challenges in learning the domain knowledge of a course. Such usage is illustrated in a management information systems course. This student-focused approach can help instructor to better understand students’ learning challenges and enhance teaching effectiveness.

Stochastic Gradient Hamiltonian Monte Carlo With Variance Reduction For Bayesian Inference, Zhize Li, Tianyi Zhang, Shuyu Cheng, Jun Zhu, Jian Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Gradient-based Monte Carlo sampling algorithms, like Langevin dynamics and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, are important methods for Bayesian inference. In large-scale settings, full-gradients are not affordable and thus stochastic gradients evaluated on mini-batches are used as a replacement. In order to reduce the high variance of noisy stochastic gradients, Dubey et al. (in: Advances in neural information processing systems, pp 1154–1162, 2016) applied the standard variance reduction technique on stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics and obtained both theoretical and experimental improvements. In this paper, we apply the variance reduction tricks on Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and achieve better theoretical convergence results compared with …

Efficiency is crucial to the online recommender systems, especially for the ones which needs to deal with tens of millions of users and items. Because representing users and items as binary vectors for Collaborative Filtering (CF) can achieve fast user-item affinity computation in the Hamming space, in recent years, we have witnessed an emerging research effort in exploiting binary hashing techniques for CF methods. However, CF with binary codes naturally suffers from low accuracy due to limited representation capability in each bit, which impedes it from modeling complex structure of the data. In this work, we attempt to improve the …

Redpc: A Residual Error-Based Density Peak Clustering Algorithm, Milan Parmar, Di Wang, Xiaofeng Zhang, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao, You Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The density peak clustering (DPC) algorithm was designed to identify arbitrary-shaped clusters by finding density peaks in the underlying dataset. Due to its aptitudes of relatively low computational complexity and a small number of control parameters in use, DPC soon became widely adopted. However, because DPC takes the entire data space into consideration during the computation of local density, which is then used to generate a decision graph for the identification of cluster centroids, DPC may face difficulty in differentiating overlapping clusters and in dealing with low-density data points. In this paper, we propose a residual error-based density peak clustering …

Unsupervised Deep Structured Semantic Models For Commonsense Reasoning, Shuohang Wang, Sheng Zhang, Yelong Shen, Xiaodong Liu, Jingjing Liu, Jianfeng Gao, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Commonsense reasoning is fundamental to natural language understanding. While traditional methods rely heavily on human-crafted features and knowledge bases, we explore learning commonsense knowledge from a large amount of raw text via unsupervised learning. We propose two neural network models based on the Deep Structured Semantic Models (DSSM) framework to tackle two classic commonsense reasoning tasks, Winograd Schema challenges (WSC) and Pronoun Disambiguation (PDP). Evaluation shows that the proposed models effectively capture contextual information in the sentence and co-reference information between pronouns and nouns, and achieve significant improvement over previous state-of-the-art approaches.

Dynamic Fusion With Intra-And Inter-Modality Attention Flow For Visual Question Answering, Peng Gao, Zhengkai Jiang, Haoxuan You, Pan Lu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Xiaogang Wang, Hongsheng Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning effective fusion of multi-modality features is at the heart of visual question answering. We propose a novel method of dynamically fusing multi-modal features with intra- and inter-modality information flow, which alternatively pass dynamic information between and across the visual and language modalities. It can robustly capture the high-level interactions between language and vision domains, thus significantly improves the performance of visual question answering. We also show that the proposed dynamic intra-modality attention flow conditioned on the other modality can dynamically modulate the intramodality attention of the target modality, which is vital for multimodality feature fusion. Experimental evaluations on the …

Stabilized Svrg: Simple Variance Reduction For Nonconvex Optimization, Rong Ge, Zhize Li, Weiyao Wang, Xiang Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Variance reduction techniques like SVRG provide simple and fast algorithms for optimizing a convex finite-sum objective. For nonconvex objectives, these techniques can also find a first-order stationary point (with small gradient). However, in nonconvex optimization it is often crucial to find a second-order stationary point (with small gradient and almost PSD hessian). In this paper, we show that Stabilized SVRG (a simple variant of SVRG) can find an $\epsilon$-second-order stationary point using only $\tilde{O}(n^{2/3}/\epsilon^2 + n/\epsilon^{1.5})$ stochastic gradients. To our best knowledge, this is the first second-order guarantee for a simple variant of SVRG. The running time almost matches the …

Self-Supervised Spatio-Temporal Representation Learning For Videos By Predicting Motion And Appearance Statistics, Jiangliu Wang, Jianbo Jiao, Linchao Bao, Shengfeng He, Yunhui Liu, Wei Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We address the problem of video representation learning without human-annotated labels. While previous efforts address the problem by designing novel self-supervised tasks using video data, the learned features are merely on a frame-by-frame basis, which are not applicable to many video analytic tasks where spatio-temporal features are prevailing. In this paper we propose a novel self-supervised approach to learn spatio-temporal features for video representation. Inspired by the success of two-stream approaches in video classification, we propose to learn visual features by regressing both motion and appearance statistics along spatial and temporal dimensions, given only the input video data. Specifically, we …

Social Recommendation With Optimal Limited Attention, Xin Wang, Wenwu Zhu, Chenghao Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social recommendation has been playing an important role in suggesting items to users through utilizing information from social connections. However, most existing approaches do not consider the attention factor causing the constraint that people can only accept a limited amount of information due to the limited strength of mind, which has been discovered as an intrinsic physiological property of human by social science. We address this issue by resorting to the concept of limited attention in social science and combining it with machine learning techniques in an elegant way. When introducing the idea of limited attention into social recommendation, two …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Food computing is playing an increasingly important role in human daily life, and has found tremendous applications in guiding human behavior towards smart food consumption and healthy lifestyle. An important task under the food-computing umbrella is retrieval, which is particularly helpful for health related applications, where we are interested in retrieving important information about food (e.g., ingredients, nutrition, etc.). In this paper, we investigate an open research task of cross-modal retrieval between cooking recipes and food images, and propose a novel framework Adversarial Cross-Modal Embedding (ACME) to resolve the cross-modal retrieval task in food domains. Specifically, the goal is to …

Data in the form of graphs are prevalent, ranging from biological and social networks to citation graphs and the Web. Inparticular, most real-world graphs are heterogeneous, containing objects of multiple types, which present new opportunities for manyproblems on graphs. Consider a typical proximity search problem on graphs, which boils down to measuring the proximity between twogiven nodes. Most earlier studies on homogeneous or bipartite graphs only measure a generic form of proximity, without accounting fordifferent “semantic classes”—for instance, on a social network two users can be close for different reasons, such as being classmates orfamily members, which represent two distinct …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In generative modeling, the Wasserstein distance (WD) has emerged as a useful metric to measure the discrepancy between generated and real data distributions. Unfortunately, it is challenging to approximate the WD of high-dimensional distributions. In contrast, the sliced Wasserstein distance (SWD) factorizes high-dimensional distributions into their multiple one-dimensional marginal distributions and is thus easier to approximate. In this paper, we introduce novel approximations of the primal and dual SWD. Instead of using a large number of random projections, as it is done by conventional SWD approximation methods, we propose to approximate SWDs with a small number of parameterized orthogonal projections …

Mixed Dish Recognition Through Multi-Label Learning, Yunan Wang, Jing-Jing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua, Wanli Zuo, Zhaoyan Ming
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mix dish recognition, whose goal is to identify each of the dish type presented on one plate, is generally regarded as a difficult problem. The major challenge of this problem is that different dishes presented in one plate may overlap with each other and there may be no clear boundaries among them. Therefore, labeling the bounding box of each dish type is difficult and not necessarily leading to good results. This paper studies the problem from the perspective of multi-label learning. Specially, we propose to perform dish recognition on region level with multiple granularities. For experimental purpose, we collect two …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Restaurant dishes represent a significant portion of food that people consume in their daily life. While people are becoming healthconscious in their food intake, convenient restaurant food tracking becomes an essential task in wellness and fitness applications. Given the huge number of dishes (food categories) involved, it becomes extremely challenging for traditional food photo classification to be feasible in both algorithm design and training data availability. In this work, we present a demo that runs on restaurant dish images in a city of millions of residents and tens of thousand restaurants. We propose a rank-loss based convolutional neural network to …

Curvilinear structures are frequently observed in various images in different forms, such as blood vessels or neuronal boundaries in biomedical images. In this paper, we propose a novel curvilinear structure segmentation approach using context-aware spatio-recurrent networks. Instead of directly segmenting the whole image or densely segmenting fixed-sized local patches, our method recurrently samples patches with varied scales from the target image with learned policy and processes them locally, which is similar to the behavior of changing retinal fixations in the human visual system and it is beneficial for capturing the multi-scale or hierarchical modality of the complex curvilinear structures. In …

Similarity queries, including range queries and k nearest neighbor (kNN) queries, in metric spaces have applications in many areas such as multimedia retrieval, computational biology and location-based services. With the growing volumes of data, a distributed method is required. In this paper, we propose an Asynchronous Metric Distributed System (AMDS), to support efficient metric similarity queries in the distributed environment. AMDS uniformly partitions the data with the pivot-mapping technique to ensure the load balancing, and employs publish/subscribe communication model to asynchronous process large scale of queries. The employment of asynchronous processing model also improves robustness and efficiency of AMDS. In …
