In areas of machine learning such as cognitive modeling or recommendation, user feedback is usually context-dependent. For instance, a website might provide a user with a set of recommendations and observe which (if any) of the links were clicked by the user. Similarly, there is growing interest in the so-called “odd-one-out” learning setting, where human participants are provided with a basket of items and asked which is the most dissimilar to the others. In both of those cases, the presence of all the items in the basket can influence the final decision. In this article, we consider a classification task …

In the contemporary digital landscape, mobile applications have become the predominant conduit for internet connectivity and daily tasks. Simultaneously, the advent of application encryption technology has safeguarded users’ privacy. However, this encryption, while fortifying privacy, introduces challenges to security by hindering the effective management of network applications within encrypted data streams. Conventional detection methods for encrypted application traffic, relying heavily on statistical metrics like payload, packet size, and distribution, are constrained to single traffic flows, often yielding results of limited specificity. To address this limitation, our paper introduces an innovative approach that elucidates the multi-flow nature of application behavior traffic …

Selecting Comparative Sets Of Reviews Across Multiple Items, Trung Hoang Le, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While choosing among several products, users may look up reviews from each product they are considering. Due to the large number of reviews of products, selecting representative reviews from one product alone is already a challenging problem. In this work, we further aim to conduct review selection for multiple products simultaneously for comparative purposes. We formulate objective functions that synchronize the review selection and design efficient algorithms to optimize for the objective functions. To narrow down the potentially long list of comparison items into a shorter list of more similar items, we construct a graph representing items’ similarity and design …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a multimodal instruction comprehension framework, called MImIC, that utilizes visual sensing (including LIDAR and 2D RGB sensing) & AI spatial reasoning capabilities to support more seamless and immersive interaction between humans and AI-driven situated assistive agents. MImIC's key new capability is to support disambiguation of a wider set of relative spatial references that users naturally employ while issuing spatially-situated instructions. To support enhanced visual grounding via a combination of both fully-qualified and relative attribute references, MImIC uses (a) a fine-tuned transformer-based language translation DNN to accurately convert natural verbal commands into a structured set of machine understandable constraints …

Varium: Variational Autoencoder For Multi-Interest Representation With Inter-User Memory, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Frameworks for discovering multiple user interest factors based on Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) has demonstrated competitive recommendation performance. However, as VAE only considers one user as input at a time, sharing across like-minded users may not be adequately facilitated. Moreover, interest sharing between users is not always available and thus, poses a challenge for VAE to explicitly model this information. To resolve this, we introduce an inter-user memory-based mechanism to unsupervisedly discover latent interest sharing between users under VAE framework. Concretely, we design a memory including an array of prototypes, each hypothetically representing a group of users sharing a particular interest. …

The growing interest in generating recipes from food images has drawn substantial research attention in recent years. Existing works for recipe generation primarily utilize a two-stage training method—first predicting ingredients from a food image and then generating instructions from both the image and ingredients. Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs), which have achieved notable success across a variety of vision and language tasks, shed light on generating both ingredients and instructions directly from images. Nevertheless, LMMs still face the common issue of hallu- cinations during recipe generation, leading to suboptimal performance. To tackle this issue, we propose a retrieval augmented large multimodal …

Enhanced Sample Selection With Confidence Tracking: Identifying Correctly Labeled Yet Hard-To-Learn Samples In Noisy Data, Weiran Pan, Wei Wei, Feida Zhu, Yong Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose a novel sample selection method for image classification in the presence of noisy labels. Existing methods typically consider small-loss samples as correctly labeled. However, some correctly labeled samples are inherently difficult for the model to learn and can exhibit high loss similar to mislabeled samples in the early stages of training. Consequently, setting a threshold on per-sample loss to select correct labels results in a trade-off between precision and recall in sample selection: a lower threshold may miss many correctly labeled hard-to-learn samples (low recall), while a higher threshold may include many mislabeled samples (low precision). To address …

Enhancing Item‑Level Bundle Representation For Bundle Recommendation, Xiaoyu Du, Kun Qian, Yunshan Ma, Xinguang Xiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Bundle recommendation approaches offer users a set of related items on a particular topic. The current state-of-the-art (SOTA) method utilizes contrastive learning to learn representations at both the bundle and item levels. However, due to the inherent difference between the bundle-level and item-level preferences, the item-level representations may not receive sufficient information from the bundle affiliations to make accurate predictions. In this article, we propose a novel approach, Enhanced Bundle Recommendation (EBRec), which incorporates two enhanced modules to explore inherent item-level bundle representations. First, we propose to incorporate the bundle-user-item (B-U-I) high-order correlations to explore more collaborative information, thus to …

A Contrastive Framework With User, Item And Review Alignment For Recommendation, Viet Hoang Dong, Yuan Fang, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning effective latent representations for users and items is the cornerstone of recommender systems. Traditional approaches rely on user-item interaction data to map users and items into a shared latent space, but the sparsity of interactions often poses challenges. While leveraging user reviews could mitigate this sparsity, existing review-aware recommendation models often exhibit two key limitations. First, they typically rely on reviews as additional features, but reviews are not universal, with many users and items lacking them. Second, such approaches do not integrate reviews into the useritem space, leading to potential divergence or inconsistency among user, item, and review representations. …

Dialogue systems are designed to offer human users social support or functional services through natural language interactions. Traditional conversation research has put significant emphasis on a system's response-ability, including its capacity to understand dialogue context and generate appropriate responses. However, the key element of proactive behavior-a crucial aspect of intelligent conversations-is often overlooked in these studies. Proactivity empowers conversational agents to lead conversations towards achieving pre-defined targets or fulfilling specific goals on the system side. Proactive dialogue systems are equipped with advanced techniques to handle complex tasks, requiring strategic and motivational interactions, thus representing a significant step towards artificial general …

Manufacturers offer adjustable control parameters for flight control systems to accommodate diverse environments and missions. To ensure flight safety, they also develop established boundaries, i.e., range specifications for parameter values. However, even when the configuration parameters fall within the prescribed manufacturer range, they could still lead to instability or even severe incidents like crashes, which are referred to as Range Specification Bugs. Prior research has suggested shrinking the range of parameter values to protect drones from the adverse effects of such bugs. However, narrowing the range of parameters may only reduce the probability of errors and could potentially limit the …

Wf-Ppg: A Wrist-Finger Dual-Channel Dataset For Studying The Impact Of Contact Pressure On Ppg Morphology, Matthew Yiwen Ho, Hung Manh Pham, Aaqib Saeed, Dong Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a simple optical technique widely used in wearable devices for continuous cardiac health monitoring. However, the quality of PPG signals, particularly their morphology, is influenced by the contact pressure between the skin and the sensor. This variability in signal quality complicates complex tasks that rely on high-quality signals, such as blood pressure and heart rate variability estimation, making them less reliable or even impossible. To address this issue, we present a novel dataset (termed WF-PPG) comprising PPG signals from the wrist measured under varying contact pressures, along with high-quality PPG signals from the fingertip captured simultaneously. Data …

The advancement of computational modeling, data systems, and digital infrastructure has enabled the rise of agent-based computational finance (ACF). This study models interactions among heterogeneous investors. By embedding behavioral logics such as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) preferences and volatility thresholds, the model captures microstructural dynamics under different trading rules. Using ACF, the authors compare transaction plus 0 day (T+0) to transaction plus 1 day (T+1). Results show that T+0 improves price discovery, deepens liquidity, and reduces transaction costs. From a computational perspective, this research contributes to ACF by showing how policy logic and investor heterogeneity can be encoded and …

Learning To Rank Aspects And Opinions For Comparative Explanations, Trung Hoang Le, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Comparative recommendation explanations help to make sense of recommendations by comparing a recommended item along some aspects of interest with one or many items being considered. This work extends the notion of comparative explanations, by going beyond merely better/worse statements, to further incorporate aspect-level opinions for more informative comparisons. To enhance the quality of both the personalized recommendation and the explanation, we incorporate optimization objectives that preserve relative rankings of aspects and opinions, in addition to the classical rankings of overall preferences for items. We integrate the multiple ranking objectives and multi-tensor factorization together. Experiments on datasets of different domains …

Label Correlated Contrastive Learning For Medical Report Generation, Xinyao Liu, Junchang Xin, Bing Tian Dai, Qi Shen, Zhihong Huang, Zhiqiong Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Background and Objective: Automatic generation of medical reports reduces both the burden on radiologists and the possibility of errors due to the inexperience of radiologists. The model that utilizes attention mechanism and contrastive learning can generate medical reports by capturing both general and specific semantics. However, existing contrastive learning methods ignore the specificity of medical data, that is, a patient may suffer from multiple diseases at the same time. This means that the lack of fine-grained relationships for contrastive learning will lead to the problem of insufficient specificity. Methods: To address the above problem, a label correlated contrastive learning method …

Flowing Together Or Alone: Impact Of Collaboration In The Metaverse, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Langtao Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The metaverse is the next-generation Internet (Web3) that facilitates social connections and collaborations in a virtual world environment. Given the potential of the metaverse to provide more satisfying and effective means of remote collaborations, exploring the possibility of leveraging the metaverse for these endeavors is warranted. Therefore, an important question to address is whether greater engagement occurs when tasks are completed collaboratively versus individually in the metaverse. We address this question by drawing on flow and transportation theories to hypothesize the effect of carrying out a creative task in the metaverse collaboratively versus alone on one's cognitive absorption, a contextually …

Your Cursor Reveals: On Analyzing Workers’ Browsing Behavior And Annotation Quality In Crowdsourcing Tasks, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this work, we investigate the connection between browsing behavior and task quality of crowdsourcing workers performing annotation tasks that require information judgements. Such information judgements are often required to derive ground truth answers to information retrieval queries. We explore the use of workers’ browsing behavior to directly determine their annotation result quality. We hypothesize user attention to be the main factor contributing to a worker’s annotation quality. To predict annotation quality at the task level, we model two aspects of task-specific user attention, also known as general and semantic user attentions . Both aspects of user attention can be …

Llms-Based Augmentation For Domain Adaptation In Long-Tailed Food Datasets, Qing Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ee-Peng Lim, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Training a model for food recognition is challenging because the training samples, which are typically crawled from the Internet, are visually different from the pictures captured by users in the free-living environment. In addition to this domain-shift problem, the real-world food datasets tend to be long-tailed distributed and some dishes of different categories exhibit subtle variations that are difficult to distinguish visually. In this paper, we present a framework empowered with large language models (LLMs) to address these challenges in food recognition. We first leverage LLMs to parse food images to generate food titles and ingredients. Then, we project the …

Defending Federated Recommender Systems Against Untargeted Attacks: A Contribution-Aware Robust Aggregation Scheme, Ruicheng Liang, Yuanchun Jiang, Feida Zhu, Ling Cheng, Huiwen Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Federated recommender systems (FedRSs) effectively tackle the tradeoff between recommendation accuracy and privacy preservation. However, recent studies have revealed severe vulnerabilities in FedRSs, particularly against untargeted attacks seeking to undermine their overall performance. Defense methods employed in traditional recommender systems are not applicable to FedRSs, and existing robust aggregation schemes for other federated learning-based applications have proven ineffective in FedRSs. Building on the observation that malicious clients contribute negatively to the training process, we design a novel contribution-aware robust aggregation scheme to defend FedRSs against untargeted attacks, named contribution-aware Bayesian knowledge distillation aggregation (ConDA), comprising two key components for the …
