Ispray: Reducing Urban Air Pollution With Intelligent Water Spraying, Yun Cheng, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele Mar 2022

Ispray: Reducing Urban Air Pollution With Intelligent Water Spraying, Yun Cheng, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite regulations and policies to improve city-level air quality in the long run, there lack precise control measures to protect critical urban spots from heavy air pollution. In this work, we propose iSpray, the first-of-its-kind data analytics engine for fine-grained PM2.5 and PM10 control at key urban areas via cost-effective water spraying. iSpray combines domain knowledge with machine learning to profile and model how water spraying affects PM25 and PM10 concentrations in time and space. It also utilizes predictions of pollution propagation paths to schedule a minimal number of sprayers to keep the pollution concentrations at key spots under control. …

Duplicate record, see https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/sis_research/7680/. Developing automatic Math Word Problem (MWP) solvers has been an interest of NLP researchers since the 1960s. Over the last few years, there are a growing number of datasets and deep learning-based methods proposed for effectively solving MWPs. However, most existing methods are benchmarked solely on one or two datasets, varying in different configurations, which leads to a lack of unified, standardized, fair, and comprehensive comparison between methods. This paper presents MWPToolkit, the first open-source framework for solving MWPs. In MWPToolkit, we decompose the procedure of existing MWP solvers into multiple core components and decouple …

On The Influence Of Biases In Bug Localization: Evaluation And Benchmark, Ratnadira Widyasari, Stefanus Agus Haryono, Ferdian Thung, Jieke Shi, Constance Tan, Fiona Wee, Jack Phan, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bug localization is the task of identifying parts of thesource code that needs to be changed to resolve a bug report. As this task is difficult, automatic bug localization tools havebeen proposed. The development and evaluation of these toolsrely on the availability of high-quality bug report datasets. In2014, Kochhar et al. identified three biases in datasets used toevaluate bug localization techniques: (1) misclassified bug report,(2) already localized bug report, and (3) incorrect ground truthfile in a bug report. They reported that already localized bugreports statistically significantly and substantially impact buglocalization results, and thus should be removed. However, theirevaluation is still limited, …

While Math Word Problem (MWP) solving has emerged as a popular field of study and made great progress in recent years, most existing methods are benchmarked solely on one or two datasets and implemented with different configurations. In this paper, we introduce the first open-source library for solving MWPs called MWPToolkit, which provides a unified, comprehensive, and extensible framework for the research purpose. Specifically, we deploy 17 deep learning-based MWP solvers and 6 MWP datasets in our toolkit. These MWP solvers are advanced models for MWP solving, covering the categories of Seq2seq, Seq2Tree, Graph2Tree, and Pre-trained Language Models. And these …

Efficient Search Of Live-Coding Screencasts From Online Videos, Chengran Yang, Ferdian Thung, David Lo Mar 2022

Efficient Search Of Live-Coding Screencasts From Online Videos, Chengran Yang, Ferdian Thung, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Programming videos on the Internet are valuable resources for learning programming skills. To find relevant videos, developers typically search online video platforms (e.g., YouTube) with keywords on topics they wish to learn. Developers often look for live-coding screencasts, in which the videos’ authors perform live coding. Yet, not all programming videos are livecoding screencasts. In this work, we develop a tool named PSFinder to identify live-coding screencasts. PSFinder leverages a classifier to identify whether a video frame contains an IDE window. It uses a sampling strategy to pick a number of frames from an input video, runs the classifer on …

Learning User Interface Semantics From Heterogeneous Networks With Multi-Modal And Positional Attributes, Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim Mar 2022

Learning User Interface Semantics From Heterogeneous Networks With Multi-Modal And Positional Attributes, Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User interfaces (UI) of desktop, web, and mobile applications involve a hierarchy of objects (e.g. applications, screens, view class, and other types of design objects) with multimodal (e.g. textual, visual) and positional (e.g. spatial location, sequence order and hierarchy level) attributes. We can therefore represent a set of application UIs as a heterogeneous network with multimodal and positional attributes. Such a network not only represents how users understand the visual layout of UIs, but also influences how users would interact with applications through these UIs. To model the UI semantics well for different UI annotation, search, and evaluation tasks, this …

Modeling Sentiments And Preferences From Multimodal Data, Quoc Tuan Truong Feb 2022

Modeling Sentiments And Preferences From Multimodal Data, Quoc Tuan Truong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Online reviews are prevalent in many modern Web applications, such as e-commerce, crowd-sourced location and check-in platforms. Fueled by the rise of mobile phones that are often the only cameras on hand, reviews are increasingly multimodal, with photos in addition to textual content. In this thesis, we focus on modeling the subjectivity carried in this form of data, with two research objectives.

In the first part, we tackle the problem of detecting sentiment expressed by a review. This is a key unlocking many applications, e.g., analyzing opinions, monitoring consumer satisfaction, assessing product quality.
Traditionally, the task of sentiment analysis primarily …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present ScriptChecker, a novel browser-based framework to effectively and efficiently restrict third-party script execution according to the host web page’s directives. Different from all existing schemes functioning at the JavaScript layer, ScriptChecker holistically harnesses context separation and the browser’s security monitors to enforce on-demand access controls upon tasks executing untrusted code. The host page can flexibly assign resource-access capabilities to tasks upon their creation. Reaping the benefits of the task capability approach, ScriptChecker outperforms existing techniques in security, usability and performance. We have implemented a prototype of ScriptChecker on Chrome and rigorously evaluated its security against 1373 malicious scripts …

Defectchecker: Automated Smart Contract Defect Detection By Analyzing Evm Bytecode, Jiachi Chen, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy, Xiapu Luo, Ting Chen Feb 2022

Defectchecker: Automated Smart Contract Defect Detection By Analyzing Evm Bytecode, Jiachi Chen, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy, Xiapu Luo, Ting Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts are Turing-complete programs running on the blockchain. They are immutable and cannot be modified, even when bugs are detected. Therefore, ensuring smart contracts are bug-free and well-designed before deploying them to the blockchain is extremely important. A contract defect is an error, flaw or fault in a smart contract that causes it to produce an incorrect or unexpected result, or to behave in unintended ways. Detecting and removing contract defects can avoid potential bugs and make programs more robust. Our previous work defined 20 contract defects for smart contracts and divided them into five impact levels. According to …

Crowdtc: Crowd-Powered Learning For Text Classification, Keyu Yang, Yunjun Gao, Lei Liang, Song Bian, Lu Chen, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Text classification is a fundamental task in content analysis. Nowadays, deep learning has demonstrated promising performance in text classification compared with shallow models. However, almost all the existing models do not take advantage of the wisdom of human beings to help text classification. Human beings are more intelligent and capable than machine learning models in terms of understanding and capturing the implicit semantic information from text. In this article, we try to take guidance from human beings to classify text. We propose Crowd-powered learning for Text Classification (CrowdTC for short). We design and post the questions on a crowdsourcing platform …

Knowledge Graph Embedding By Normalizing Flows, Changyi Xiao, Xiangnan He, Yixin Cao Feb 2022

Knowledge Graph Embedding By Normalizing Flows, Changyi Xiao, Xiangnan He, Yixin Cao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A key to knowledge graph embedding (KGE) is to choose a proper representation space, e.g., point-wise Euclidean space and complex vector space. In this paper, we propose a unified perspective of embedding and introduce uncertainty into KGE from the view of group theory. Our model can incorporate existing models (i.e., generality), ensure the computation is tractable (i.e., efficiency) and enjoy the expressive power of complex random variables (i.e., expressiveness). The core idea is that we embed entities/relations as elements of a symmetric group, i.e., permutations of a set. Permutations of different sets can reflect different properties of embedding. And the …

Collaborative Curating For Discovery And Expansion Of Visual Clusters, Duy Dung Le, Hady W. Lauw Feb 2022

Collaborative Curating For Discovery And Expansion Of Visual Clusters, Duy Dung Le, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In many visually-oriented applications, users can select and group images that they find interesting into coherent clusters. For instance, we encounter these in the form of hashtags on Instagram, galleries on Flickr, or boards on Pinterest. The selection and coherence of such user-curated visual clusters arise from a user’s preference for a certain type of content as well as her own perception of which images are similar and thus belong to a cluster. We seek to model such curation behaviors towards supporting users in their future activities such as expanding existing clusters or discovering new clusters altogether. This paper proposes …

What Really Matters?: Characterising And Predicting User Engagement Of News Postings Using Multiple Platforms, Sentiments And Topics, Kholoud K. Aldous, Jisun An, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research characterises user engagement of approximately 3,000,000 news postings of 53 news outlets and 50,000,000 associated user comments during 8 months on 5 social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit). We investigate the effect of sentiments and topics on user engagement across four levels of user engagement expressions (i.e. views, likes, comments, cross-platform posting). We find that sentiments and topics differ by both news outlets and social media platforms, and both sentiments and topics by the four levels of user engagement expression. Finally, we predict a volume of four user engagement levels for given news content, …

New-Media Advertising And Retail Platform Openness, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo Feb 2022

New-Media Advertising And Retail Platform Openness, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We recently have witnessed two important trends in online retailing: the advent of new media (e.g., social media and search engines) makes advertising affordable for small sellers, and large online retailers (e.g., Amazon and JD.com) opening their platforms to allow even direct competitors to sell on their platforms. We examine how new-media advertising affects retail platform openness. We develop a game-theoretic model in which a leading retailer, who has both valuation and awareness advantages, and a third-party seller, who sells an identical product, engage in price competition. We find that the availability of relatively low-cost advertising through new media plays …

The widespread availability of cell phones has enabled non-profits to deliver critical health information to their beneficiaries in a timely manner. This paper describes our work to assist non-profits that employ automated messaging programs to deliver timely preventive care information to beneficiaries (new and expecting mothers) during pregnancy and after delivery. Unfortunately, a key challenge in such information delivery programs is that a significant fraction of beneficiaries drop out of the program. Yet, non-profits often have limited health-worker resources (time) to place crucial service calls for live interaction with beneficiaries to prevent such engagement drops. To assist non-profits in optimizing …

Simultaneous Material Identification And Target Imaging With Commodity Rfid Devices, Ju Wang, Jie Xiong, Xiaojiang Chen, Hongbo Jiang, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Dingyi Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Material identification and target imaging play an important role in many applications. This paper introduces TagScan, a system that can identify the material type and image the horizontal cut of a target simultaneously with cheap commodity Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) devices. The key intuition is that different materials and/or target sizes cause different amounts of phase and RSS (Received Signal Strength) changes, when radio frequency (RF) signal penetrates through the target. Multiple challenges need to be addressed before we can turn the idea into a functional system, including (i) indoor environments exhibit rich multipath which breaks the linear relationship between the …

The Effects Of Recommender System On Sales Promotion Of High-Value Products: Evidence From A Field Experiment In The Real Estate Industry, Lian Liu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Real estate sales industry in China has long suffered the problem of inefficient matching of customers to projects. Inspired by the design of recommender systems, which have been widely used in the online retail industry, and are shown to facility customer-product matching and improve sales, we apply this system to the real estate sales industry using a novel approach. Instead of recommending products to customers, we suggest the best potential customers to salespeople with whom they will conduct sales with. Using city-wide sales data from the largest real estate sales company in China, we first develop a recommend system based …

Automating App Review Response Generation Based On Contextual Knowledge, Cuiyun Gao, Wenjie Zhou, Xin Xia, David Lo, Qi Xie, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User experience of mobile apps is an essential ingredient that can influence the user base and app revenue. To ensure good user experience and assist app development, several prior studies resort to analysis of app reviews, a type of repository that directly reflects user opinions about the apps. Accurately responding to the app reviews is one of the ways to relieve user concerns and thus improve user experience. However, the response quality of the existing method relies on the pre-extracted features from other tools, including manually labelled keywords and predicted review sentiment, which may hinder the generalizability and flexibility of …

Action-Centric Relation Transformer Network For Video Question Answering, Jipeng Zhang, Jie Shao, Rui Cao, Lianli Gao, Xing Xu, Heng Tao Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Video question answering (VideoQA) has emerged as a popular research topic in recent years. Enormous efforts have been devoted to developing more effective fusion strategies and better intra-modal feature preparation. To explore these issues further, we identify two key problems. (1) Current works take almost no account of introducing action of interest in video representation. Additionally, there exists insufficient labeling data on where the action of interest is in many datasets. However, questions in VideoQA are usually action-centric. (2) Frame-to-frame relations, which can provide useful temporal attributes (e.g., state transition, action counting), lack relevant research. Based on these observations, we …

Codematcher: Searching Code Based On Sequential Semantics Of Important Query Words, Chao Liu, Xin Xia, David Lo, Zhiwei Liu, Ahmed E. Hassan, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To accelerate software development, developers frequently search and reuse existing code snippets from a large-scale codebase, e.g., GitHub. Over the years, researchers proposed many information retrieval (IR)-based models for code search, but they fail to connect the semantic gap between query and code. An early successful deep learning (DL)-based model DeepCS solved this issue by learning the relationship between pairs of code methods and corresponding natural language descriptions. Two major advantages of DeepCS are the capability of understanding irrelevant/noisy keywords and capturing sequential relationships between words in query and code. In this article, we proposed an IR-based model CodeMatcher that …

Deep Learning For Video-Grounded Dialogue Systems, Hung Le Jan 2022

Deep Learning For Video-Grounded Dialogue Systems, Hung Le

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In recent years, we have witnessed significant progress in building systems with artificial intelligence. However, despite advancements in machine learning and deep learning, we are still far from achieving autonomous agents that can perceive multi-dimensional information from the surrounding world and converse with humans in natural language. Towards this goal, this thesis is dedicated to building intelligent systems in the task of video-grounded dialogues. Specifically, in a video-grounded dialogue, a system is required to hold a multi-turn conversation with humans about the content of a video. Given an input video, a dialogue history, and a question about the video, the …

Beyond Triplet Loss: Person Re-Identification With Fine-Grained Difference-Aware Pairwise Loss, Cheng Yan, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Changhong Liu, Xin Ning, Jun Zhou Jan 2022

Beyond Triplet Loss: Person Re-Identification With Fine-Grained Difference-Aware Pairwise Loss, Cheng Yan, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Changhong Liu, Xin Ning, Jun Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Person Re-IDentification (ReID) aims at re-identifying persons from different viewpoints across multiple cameras. Capturing the fine-grained appearance differences is often the key to accurate person ReID, because many identities can be differentiated only when looking into these fine-grained differences. However, most state-of-the-art person ReID approaches, typically driven by a triplet loss, fail to effectively learn the fine-grained features as they are focused more on differentiating large appearance differences. To address this issue, we introduce a novel pairwise loss function that enables ReID models to learn the fine-grained features by adaptively enforcing an exponential penalization on the images of small differences …

Contextual Documentation Referencing On Stack Overflow, Sebastian Baltes, Christoph Treude, Martin P. Robillard Jan 2022

Contextual Documentation Referencing On Stack Overflow, Sebastian Baltes, Christoph Treude, Martin P. Robillard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software engineering is knowledge-intensive and requires software developers to continually search for knowledge, often on community question answering platforms such as Stack Overflow. Such information sharing platforms do not exist in isolation, and part of the evidence that they exist in a broader software documentation ecosystem is the common presence of hyperlinks to other documentation resources found in forum posts. With the goal of helping to improve the information diffusion between Stack Overflow and other documentation resources, we conducted a study to answer the question of how and why documentation is referenced in Stack Overflow threads. We sampled and classified …

Nearest neighbor search and k-nearest neighbor graph construction are two fundamental issues that arise from many disciplines such as multimedia information retrieval, data-mining, and machine learning. They become more and more imminent given the big data emerge in various fields in recent years. In this paper, a simple but effective solution both for approximate k-nearest neighbor search and approximate k-nearest neighbor graph construction is presented. These two issues are addressed jointly in our solution. On one hand, the approximate k-nearest neighbor graph construction is treated as a search task. Each sample along with its k-nearest neighbors is joined into the …

A Blockchain-Based Self-Tallying Voting Protocol In Decentralized Iot, Yannan Li, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Yong Yu, Dongxi Liu, Xiaojiang Du, Mohsen Guizani

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Internet of Things (IoT) is experiencing explosive growth and has gained extensive attention from academia and industry in recent years. However, most of the existing IoT infrastructures are centralized, which may cause the issues of unscalability and single-point-of-failure. Consequently, decentralized IoT has been proposed by taking advantage of the emerging technology called blockchain. Voting systems are widely adopted in IoT, for example a leader election in wireless sensor networks. Self-tallying voting systems are alternatives to unsuitable, traditional centralized voting systems in decentralized IoT. Unfortunately, self-tallying voting systems inherently suffer from fairness issues, such as adaptive and abortive issues caused …

Correlating Automated And Human Evaluation Of Code Documentation Generation Quality, Xing Hu, Qiuyuan Chen, Haoye Wang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Thomas Zimmermann Jan 2022

Correlating Automated And Human Evaluation Of Code Documentation Generation Quality, Xing Hu, Qiuyuan Chen, Haoye Wang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Thomas Zimmermann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic code documentation generation has been a crucial task in the field of software engineering. It not only relieves developers from writing code documentation but also helps them to understand programs better. Specifically, deep-learning-based techniques that leverage large-scale source code corpora have been widely used in code documentation generation. These works tend to use automatic metrics (such as BLEU, METEOR, ROUGE, CIDEr, and SPICE) to evaluate different models. These metrics compare generated documentation to reference texts by measuring the overlapping words. Unfortunately, there is no evidence demonstrating the correlation between these metrics and human judgment. We conduct experiments on two …

Kg4vis: A Knowledge Graph-Based Approach For Visualization Recommendation, Haotian Li, Yong Wang, Songheng Zhang, Yangqiu Song, Huamin. Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Visualization recommendation or automatic visualization generation can significantly lower the barriers for general users to rapidly create effective data visualizations, especially for those users without a background in data visualizations. However, existing rule-based approaches require tedious manual specifications of visualization rules by visualization experts. Other machine learning-based approaches often work like black-box and are difficult to understand why a specific visualization is recommended, limiting the wider adoption of these approaches. This paper fills the gap by presenting KG4Vis, a knowledge graph (KG)-based approach for visualization recommendation. It does not require manual specifications of visualization rules and can also guarantee good …

Why Do Smart Contracts Self-Destruct? Investigating The Selfdestruct Function On Ethereum, Jiachi Chen, Xin Xia, David Lo, John C. Grundy Jan 2022

Why Do Smart Contracts Self-Destruct? Investigating The Selfdestruct Function On Ethereum, Jiachi Chen, Xin Xia, David Lo, John C. Grundy

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The selfdestruct function is provided by Ethereum smart contracts to destroy a contract on the blockchain system. However, it is a double-edged sword for developers. On the one hand, using the selfdestruct function enables developers to remove smart contracts (SCs) from Ethereum and transfers Ethers when emergency situations happen, e.g., being attacked. On the other hand, this function can increase the complexity for the development and open an attack vector for attackers. To better understand the reasons why SC developers include or exclude the selfdestruct function in their contracts, we conducted an online survey to collect feedback from them and …
