Firms in the financial services industry have been faced with the dramatic and relatively recentemergence of new technology innovations, and process disruptions. The industry as a whole, and many newfintech start-ups are looking for new pathways to successful business models, the creation of enhanced customerexperience, and new approaches that result in services transformation. Industry and academic observers believethis to be more of a revolution than a set of less impactful changes, with financial services as a whole due formajor improvements in efficiency, in customer centricity and informedness. The long-standing dominance ofleading firms that are not able to figure out how …

Removing the undesired reflections in images taken through the glass is of broad application to various image processing and computer vision tasks. Existing single image-based solutions heavily rely on scene priors such as separable sparse gradients caused by different levels of blur, and they are fragile when such priors are not observed. In this paper, we notice that strong reflections usually dominant a limited region in the whole image, and propose a region-aware reflection removal approach by automatically detecting and heterogeneously processing regions with and without reflections. We integrate content and gradient priors to jointly achieve missing contents restoration, as …

Understanding users in the era of social media is challenging, requiring organizations to adopt novel computation-aided approaches. To exemplify such an approach, we retrieved information on millions of interactions with YouTube video content from a major Middle Eastern media outlet, to automatically generate personas that capture how different audience segments interact with thousands of individual content pieces. Then, we used qualitative data to provide additional insights into the automatically generated persona profiles. Our findings provide insights into social media usage in the Middle East and demonstrate the application of a novel methodology that generates culturally adapted personas of social media …

In this research, we evaluate four widely used face detection tools, which are Face++, IBM Bluemix Visual Recognition, AWS Rekognition, and Microsoft Azure Face API, using multiple datasets to determine their accuracy in inferring user attributes, including gender, race, and age. Results show that the tools are generally proficient at determining gender, with accuracy rates greater than 90%, except for IBM Bluemix. Concerning race, only one of the four tools provides this capability, Face++, with an accuracy rate of greater than 90%, although the evaluation was performed on a high-quality dataset. Inferring age appears to be a challenging problem, as …

Industrial software systems are being increasingly developed by large and distributed teams. Tools like collaborative development environments (CDE) are used to facilitate interaction between members of such teams, with the expectation that social factors around the interaction would facilitate team functioning. In this paper, we first identify typically social characteristics of interaction in a software development team: reachability, connection, association, and clustering. We then examine how these factors relate to the quality of software produced by a team, in terms of the number of defects, through an empirical study of 70+ teams, involving 900+ developers in total, spread across 30+ …

Entity Summarization Of Reviews And Micro-Reviews, Thanh Son Nguyen
Entity Summarization Of Reviews And Micro-Reviews, Thanh Son Nguyen
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Along with the regular review content, there is a new type of user-generated content arising from the prevalence of mobile devices and social media, that is micro-review. Micro-reviews are bite-size reviews (usually under 200 char- acters), commonly posted on social media or check-in services, using a mobile device. They capture the immediate reaction of users, and they are rich in information, concise, and to the point. Both reviews and micro-reviews are useful for users to get to know the entity of interest, thus facilitating users in making their decision of purchasing or dining. However, the abundant number of both reviews …

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Softwares are constantly evolving. This evolution has been made easier through the use of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). By leveraging APIs, developers reuse previously implemented functionalities and concentrate on writing new codes. These APIs may originate from either third parties or internally from other compo- nents of the software that are currently developed. In the first case, developers need to know how to find and use third party APIs. In the second case, developers need to be aware of internal APIs in their own software. In either case, there is often too much information to digest. For instance, finding the …
Automatic Vulnerability Detection And Repair, Siqi Ma
Automatic Vulnerability Detection And Repair, Siqi Ma
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Vulnerability becomes a major threat to the security of many systems, including computer systems (e.g., Windows and Linux) and mobile systems (e.g., Android and iOS). Attackers can steal private information and perform harmful actions by exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities. Vulnerabilities often remain undetected for a long time as they may not affect the typical functionalities of systems. Thus, it is important to detect and repair a vulnerability in time. However, it is often difficult for a developer to detect and repair a vulnerability correctly and timely if he/she is not a security expert. Fortunately, automatic repair approaches significantly assist developers to …

Discovering Hidden Topical Hubs And Authorities In Online Social Networks, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Tuan-Anh Hoang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Finding influential users in online social networks is an important problem with many possible useful applications. HITS and other link analysis methods, in particular, have been often used to identify hub and authority users in web graphs and online social networks. These works, however, have not considered topical aspect of links in their analysis. A straightforward approach to overcome this limitation is to first apply topic models to learn the user topics before applying the HITS algorithm. In this paper, we instead propose a novel topic model known as Hub and Authority Topic (HAT) model to combines the two process …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A popular recent approach to answering open-domain questions is to first search for question-related passages and then apply reading comprehension models to extract answers. Existing methods usually extract answers from single passages independently. But some questions require a combination of evidence from across different sources to answer correctly. In this paper, we propose two models which make use of multiple passages to generate their answers. Both use an answer-reranking approach which reorders the answer candidates generated by an existing state-of-the-art QA model. We propose two methods, namely, strength-based re-ranking and coverage-based re-ranking, to make use of the aggregated evidence from …

Advanced sensor technology, social media, and other information technologies have provided us with “big data” on climate change. Due to the World Meteorological Organization’s Global Climate Observing System, climate observations and records, as well as discussions on climate-related concerns such as measurement of air temperature, are widely available now. The United Nations’ Global Pulse visualises public engagement on climate change globally, with data such as the volume of climate-related tweets. Big data, data analytics, and the sharing of scientific results in the popular press have created, as a result, an unprecedented level of citizen informedness—the degree to which citizens have …

Anflo: Detecting Anomalous Sensitive Information Flows In Android Apps, Biniam Fisseha Demissie, Mariano Ceccato, Lwin Khin Shar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Smartphone apps usually have access to sensitive user data such as contacts, geo-location, and account credentials and they might share such data to external entities through the Internet or with other apps. Confidentiality of user data could be breached if there are anomalies in the way sensitive data is handled by an app which is vulnerable or malicious. Existing approaches that detect anomalous sensitive data flows have limitations in terms of accuracy because the definition of anomalous flows may differ for different apps with different functionalities; it is normal for “Health” apps to share heart rate information through the Internet …

Finding All Nearest Neighbors With A Single Graph Traversal, Yixin Xu, Qi Jianzhong, Borovica‐Gajic Renata, Kulik Lars
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Finding the nearest neighbor is a key operation in data analysis and mining. An important variant of nearest neighbor query is the all nearest neighbor (ANN) query, which reports all nearest neighbors for a given set of query objects. Existing studies on ANN queries have focused on Euclidean space. Given the widespread occurrence of spatial networks in urban environments, we study the ANN query in spatial network settings. An example of an ANN query on spatial networks is finding the nearest car parks for all cars currently on the road. We propose VIVET, an index-based algorithm to efficiently process ANN …

Effect Of Probable And Guaranteed Monetary Value Gains And Losses On Cybersecurity Behavior Of Users, S. Ravindran, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, M. Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The objective of this research is to examine users’ cybersecurity behavior in monetary gain and loss scenarios. Using Prospect Theory, we hypothesize that users are more likely to engage in risky cybersecurity behavior to avoid monetary losses than to benefit from monetary gains. We also hypothesize that guaranteed gains have a greater effect on a user’s risk-taking behavior than potential gains, and potential losses have a greater effect on a user’s risk-taking behavior than guaranteed losses. An experimental study is proposed to test the research hypotheses.

Assessing Classical And Expressive Aesthetics Of Web Pages Using Machine Learning, Ang Chen, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Langtao Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Aesthetics plays a key role in web design. However, most websites are developed based on designers’ "inspirations" or "educated guesses" (Liu, 2003). While perceptions of aesthetics are intuitive abilities of humankind, the underlying principles for assessing aesthetics are not well understood. In this research, we propose using machine learning techniques to explore and more fully understand the patterns and underlying principles of aesthetics. We propose using machine learning techniques to develop predictive models for two aesthetic dimensions – classical aesthetics and expressive aesthetics – as well as for overall aesthetics of web pages in order to evaluate the aesthetic quality …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although dispersing one single task to distributed learning nodes has been intensively studied by the previous research, multi-task learning on distributed networks is still an area that has not been fully exploited, especially under decentralized settings. The challenge lies in the fact that different tasks may have different optimal learning weights while communication through the distributed network forces all tasks to converge to an unique classifier. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to overcome this challenge and enable learning multiple tasks simultaneously on a decentralized distributed network. Specifically, the learning framework can be separated into two phases: (i) …

Chinese developers often cannot effectively search questions in English, because they may have difficulties in translating technical words from Chinese to English and formulating proper English queries. For the purpose of helping Chinese developers take advantage of the rich knowledge base of Stack Overflow and simplify the question retrieval process, we propose an automated cross-language relevant question retrieval (CLRQR) system to retrieve relevant English questions for a given Chinese question. CLRQR first extracts essential information (both Chinese and English) from the title and description of the input Chinese question, then performs domain-specific translation of the essential Chinese information into English, …

Path authentication thwarts counterfeits in RFID-based supply chains. Its motivation is that tagged products taking invalid paths are likely faked and injected by adversaries at certain supply chain partners/steps. Existing solutions are path-grained in that they simply regard a product as genuine if it takes any valid path. Furthermore, they enforce distributed authentication by offloading the sets of valid paths to some or all steps from a centralized issuer. This not only imposes network and storage overhead but also leaks transaction privacy. We present StepAuth, the first step-grained path authentication protocol that is practically efficient for authenticating products with strict …

A Novel Representation And Compression For Queries On Trajectories In Road Networks, Xiaochun Yang, Bin Wang, Kai Yang, Chengfei Liu, Baihua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recording and querying time-stamped trajectories incurs high cost of data storage and computing. In this paper, we explore several characteristics of the trajectories in road mbox{networks}, which have motivated the idea of coding trajectories by associating timestamps with relative spatial path and locations. Such a representation contains large number of duplicate information to achieve a lower entropy compared with the existing representations, thereby drastically cutting the storage cost. We propose several techniques to compress spatial path and locations separately, which can support fast positioning and achieve better compression ratio. For locations, we propose two novel encoding schemes such that the …

In this paper, we propose a new type of query that augments the spatial keyword search with an additional boolean expression constraint. The query is issued against a corpus of structured or semi-structured spatial entities and is very useful in applications like mobile search and targeted location-aware advertising. We devise three types of indexing and filtering strategies. First, we utilize the hybrid IR2" role="presentation" style="display: inline; line-height: normal; letter-spacing: normal; word-spacing: normal; word-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border-width: 0px; border-style: initial; position: relative;">IR2IR2-tree and propose a novel hashing …

Past research has shown the benefits of food journaling in promoting mindful eating and healthier food choices. However, the links between journaling and healthy eating have not been thoroughly examined. Beyond caloric restriction, do journalers consistently and sufficiently consume healthful diets? How different are their eating habits compared to those of average consumers who tend to be less conscious about health? In this study, we analyze the healthy eating behaviors of active food journalers using data from MyFitnessPal. Surprisingly, our findings show that food journalers do not eat as healthily as they should despite their proclivity to health eating and …

In this research, we investigate if and how more photos than a single headshot can heighten the level of information provided by persona profiles. We conduct eye-tracking experiments and qualitative interviews with variations in the photos: a single headshot, a headshot and images of the persona in different contexts, and a headshot with pictures of different people representing key persona attributes. The results show that more contextual photos significantly improve the information end users derive from a persona profile; however, showing images of different people creates confusion and lowers the informativeness. Moreover, we discover that choice of pictures results in …

A Sliding-Window Framework For Representative Subset Selection, Yanhao Wang, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Representative subset selection (RSS) is an important tool for users to draw insights from massive datasets. A common approach is to model RSS as the submodular maximization problem because the utility of extracted representatives often satisfies the "diminishing returns" property. To capture the data recency issue and support different types of constraints in real-world problems, we formulate RSS as maximizing a submodular function subject to a d-knapsack constraint (SMDK) over sliding windows. Then, we propose a novel KnapWindow framework for SMDK. Theoretically, KnapWindow is 1-ε/1+d - approximate for SMDK and achieves sublinear complexity. Finally, we evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness …
