Recent research has identified a few design flaws in popular mobile health (mHealth) applications for promoting healthy eating lifestyle, such as mobile food journals. These include tediousness of manual food logging, inadequate food database coverage, and a lack of healthy dietary goal setting. To address these issues, we present Foodbot, a chatbot-based mHealth application for goal-oriented just-in-time (JIT) healthy eating interventions. Powered by a large-scale food knowledge graph, Foodbot utilizes automatic speech recognition and mobile messaging interface to record food intake. Moreover, Foodbot allows users to set goals and guides their behavior toward the goals via JIT notification prompts, interactive …

Audio descriptions can make the visual content in videos accessible to people with visual impairments. However, the majority of the online videos lack audio descriptions due in part to the shortage of experts who can create high-quality descriptions. We present ViScene, a web-based authoring tool that taps into the larger pool of sighted non-experts to help them generate high-quality descriptions via two feedback mechanisms - succinct visualizations and comments from an expert. Through a mixed-design study with N = 6 participants, we explore the usability of ViScene and the quality of the descriptions created by sighted non-experts with and without …

This research full paper, describes knowledge management of class discussions using an analytics based framework. Discussions, either live classroom or through online forums, when used as a teaching method can help stimulate critical thinking. It allows the teacher to explore in-depth the key concepts covered in the course, motivates students to articulate their ideas clearly and challenge the students to think more deeply. Analysing the discussions helps instructors gain better insights on the personal and collaborative learning behaviour of students. However, knowledge from in-class discussions and online forums is not effectively captured and mined due to lack of appropriate automated …

This research explores how the presentation of computer security risks impacts users’ risk perceptions and behavior. It draws on Prospect Theory to generate hypotheses related to users’ decision-making in the computer security context. A 2 × 3 mixed factorial experimental design (N = 178) was carried out and the results show that framing and base size of information on computer security risks influence users’ perceived risk and risk-taking behavior. More specifically, negative framing and large base size increase users’ perceived risk and reduce users’ risk-taking behavior. The findings from this research suggest that using negative framing and large base size …

Meta-Rcnn: Meta Learning For Few-Shot Object Detection, Xiongwei Wu, Doyen Sahoo, Steven Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite significant advances in deep learning based object detection in recent years, training effective detectors in a small data regime remains an open challenge. This is very important since labelling training data for object detection is often very expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we investigate the problem of few-shot object detection, where a detector has access to only limited amounts of annotated data. Based on the meta-learning principle, we propose a new meta-learning framework for object detection named "Meta-RCNN", which learns the ability to perform few-shot detection via meta-learning. Specifically, Meta-RCNN learns an object detector in an episodic learning …

General-purpose topic models have widespread industrial applications. Yet high-quality topic modeling is becoming increasingly challenging because accurate models require large amounts of training data typically owned by multiple parties, who are often unwilling to share their sensitive data for collaborative training without guarantees on their data privacy. To enable effective privacy-preserving multiparty topic modeling, we propose a novel federated general-purpose topic model named private and consistent topic discovery (PC-TD). On the one hand, PC-TD seamlessly integrates differential privacy in topic modeling to provide privacy guarantees on sensitive data of different parties. On the other hand, PC-TD exploits multiple sources of …

Cross-Domain Cross-Modal Food Transfer, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jingjing Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The recent works in cross-modal image-to-recipe retrieval pave a new way to scale up food recognition. By learning the joint space between food images and recipes, food recognition is boiled down as a retrieval problem by evaluating the similarity of embedded features. The major drawback, nevertheless, is the difficulty in applying an already-trained model to recognize different cuisines of dishes unknown to the model. In general, model updating with new training examples, in the form of image-recipe pairs, is required to adapt a model to new cooking styles in a cuisine. Nevertheless, in practice, acquiring sufficient number of image-recipe pairs …

Maintaining a food journal can allow an individual to monitor eating habits, including unhealthy eating sessions, food items causing severe reactions, or portion size related information. However, manually maintaining a food journal can be burdensome. In this paper, we explore the vision of a pervasive, automated, completely unobtrusive, food journaling system using a commodity smartwatch. We present a prototype system — Annapurna— which is composed of three key components: (a) a smartwatch-based gesture recognizer that can robustly identify eating-specific gestures occurring anywhere, (b) a smartwatch-based image captor that obtains a small set of relevant images (containing views of the food …

On Modeling Labor Markets For Fine-Grained Insights, Hendrik Santoso Sugiarto, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The labor market consists of job seekers looking for jobs, and job openings waiting for applications. Classical labor market models assume that salary is the primary factor explaining why job-seekers select certain jobs. In practice, job seeker behavior is much more complex and there are other factors that should be considered. In this paper, we therefore propose the Probabilistic Labor Model (PLM) which considers salary satisfaction, topic preference matching, and accessibility as important criteria for job seekers to decide when they apply for jobs. We also determine the user and job latent variables for each criterion and define a graphical …

Temporal Heterogeneous Interaction Graph Embedding For Next-Item Recommendation, Yugang Ji, Mingyang Yin, Yuan Fang, Hongxia Yang, Xiangwei Wang, Tianrui Jia, Chuan Shi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the scenario of next-item recommendation, previous methods attempt to model user preferences by capturing the evolution of sequential interactions. However, their sequential expression is often limited, without modeling complex dynamics that short-term demands can often be influenced by long-term habits. Moreover, few of them take into account the heterogeneous types of interaction between users and items. In this paper, we model such complex data as a Temporal Heterogeneous Interaction Graph (THIG) and learn both user and item embeddings on THIGs to address next-item recommendation. The main challenges involve two aspects: the complex dynamics and rich heterogeneity of interactions. We …

Solving mathematical word problems (MWPs) automatically is challenging, primarily due to the semantic gap between human-readable words and machine-understandable logics. Despite the long history dated back to the 1960s, MWPs have regained intensive attention in the past few years with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Solving MWPs successfully is considered as a milestone towards general AI. Many systems have claimed promising results in self-crafted and small-scale datasets. However, when applied on large and diverse datasets, none of the proposed methods in the literature achieves high precision, revealing that current MWP solvers still have much room for improvement. This motivated …

This work is extended from our participation in the Dialogue System Technology Challenge (DSTC7), where we participated in the Audio Visual Scene-aware Dialogue System (AVSD) track. The AVSD track evaluates how dialogue systems understand video scenes and responds to users about the video visual and audio content. We propose a hierarchical attention approach on user queries, video caption, audio and visual features that contribute to improved evaluation results. We also apply a nonlinear feature fusion approach to combine the visual and audio features for better knowledge representation. Our proposed model shows superior performance in terms of both objective evaluation and …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although used in many domains, the evaluation of personas is difficult due to the lack of validated measurement instruments. To tackle this challenge, we propose the Persona Perception Scale (PPS), a survey instrument for evaluating how individuals perceive personas. We develop the scale by reviewing relevant literature from social psychology, persona studies, and Human-Computer Interaction to find relevant constructs and items for measuring persona perceptions. Following initial pilot testing, we conduct an exploratory validation of the scale with 412 respondents and find that the constructs and items of the scale perform satisfactorily for deployment. The research has implications for both …

Deep Learning techniques have been prevalent in various domains, and more and more open source projects in GitHub rely on deep learning libraries to implement their algorithms. To that end, they should always keep pace with the latest versions of deep learning libraries to make the best use of deep learning libraries. Aptly managing the versions of deep learning libraries can help projects avoid crashes or security issues caused by deep learning libraries. Unfortunately, very few studies have been done on the dependency networks of deep learning libraries. In this paper, we take the first step to perform an exploratory …
Time-Warped Sparse Non-Negative Factorization For Functional Data Analysis, Chen Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Fugee Tsung
Time-Warped Sparse Non-Negative Factorization For Functional Data Analysis, Chen Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Fugee Tsung
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article proposes a novel time-warped sparse non-negative factorization method for functional data analysis. The proposed method on the one hand guarantees the extracted basis functions and their coefficients to be positive and interpretable, and on the other hand is able to handle weakly correlated functions with different features. Furthermore, the method incorporates time warping into factorization and hence allows the extracted basis functions of different samples to have temporal deformations. An efficient framework of estimation algorithms is proposed based on a greedy variable selection approach. Numerical studies together with case studies on real-world data demonstrate the efficacy and applicability …

The sharing economy proposes a new approach to designing and delivering products and services, that aims at avoiding waste, improving efficiency, and favoring bottom-up change. In this research commentary, we survey the current state of things and propose some directions for research. We first describe the industries, products, and services currently representing the sharing paradigm, the technology platforms enabling it, the business models driving it, and the regulatory issues. We envisage that promising areas of research should include: (1) devising more efficient algorithms; (2) considering ecological and prosocial objective functions; (3) dealing with regulatory issues; (4) expanding the span of …

Weakly Paired Multi-Domain Image Translation, M.Y. Zhang, Zhiwu Huang, D.P. Paudel, J. Thoma, Gool L. Van
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we aim at studying the new problem of weakly paired multi-domain image translation. To this end, we collect a dataset that contains weakly paired images from multiple domains. Two images are considered to be weakly paired if they are captured from nearby locations and share an overlapping field of view. These images are possibly captured by two asynchronous cameras—often resulting in images from separate domains, e.g. summer and winter. Major motivations for using weakly paired images are: (i) performance improvement towards that of paired data; (ii) cheap labels and abundant data availability. For the first time in …

Social Influence Attentive Neural Network For Friend-Enhanced Recommendation, Yuanfu Lu, Ruobing Xie, Chuan Shi, Yuan Fang, Wei Wang, Xu Zhang, Leyu Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the thriving of online social networks, there emerges a new recommendation scenario in many social apps, called FriendEnhanced Recommendation (FER) in this paper. In FER, a user is recommended with items liked/shared by his/her friends (called a friend referral circle). These friend referrals are explicitly shown to users. Different from conventional social recommendation, the unique friend referral circle in FER may significantly change the recommendation paradigm, making users to pay more attention to enhanced social factors. In this paper, we first formulate the FER problem, and propose a novel Social Influence Attentive Neural network (SIAN) solution. In order to …

Moving objects equipped with location-positioning devices continuously generate a large amount of spatio-temporal trajectory data. An interesting finding over a trajectory stream is a group of objects that are travelling together for a certain period of time. Existing studies on mining co-moving objects do not consider an important correlation between co-moving objects, which is the reoccurrence of the movement pattern. In this study, we define a problem of finding recurrent pattern of co-moving objects from streaming trajectories and propose an efficient solution that enables us to discover recent co-moving object patterns repeated within a given time period. Experimental results on …

One of the most frequently-used phrases at business events these days is “the future of work.” It’s increasingly clear that artificial intelligence and other new technologies will bring substantial changes in work tasks and business processes. But while these changes are predicted for the future, they’re already present in many organizations for many different jobs. The job and incumbents described below are an example of this phenomenon. Steve Miller of Singapore Management University and I co-authored the story.

Fasts: A Satisfaction-Boosting Bus Scheduling Assistant (Demo), Momo Song, Zhifeng Bao, Baihua Zheng, Zhiyong Peng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we demonstrate a satisfaction-boosting bus scheduling assistant called FASTS, which assists users to find an optimal bus schedule. FASTS performs bus scheduling based on the constraints specified by the user in either a coarse-grained or a fine-grained manner, supports different explorations with a varying number of constraints, and provides analysis to quantify the performance of bus schedules and presents the results in a visually pleasing way. We demonstrate FASTS using real-world bus routes (396 routes) and one-week bus touch-on/touch-off records (28 million trip records) in Singapore.

Deepstyle: User Style Embedding For Authorship Attribution Of Short Texts, Zhiqiang Hu, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Lei Wang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Authorship attribution (AA), which is the task of finding the owner of a given text, is an important and widely studied research topic with many applications. Recent works have shown that deep learning methods could achieve significant accuracy improvement for the AA task. Nevertheless, most of these proposed methods represent user posts using a single type of features (e.g., word bi-grams) and adopt a text classification approach to address the task. Furthermore, these methods offer very limited explainability of the AA results. In this paper, we address these limitations by proposing DeepStyle, a novel embedding-based framework that learns the representations …

Social Participation Performance Of Wheelchair Users Using Clustering And Geolocational Sensor's Data, Yukun Yin, Kar Way Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
For wheelchair users, social participation and physical mobility play a significant part in determining their mental health and quality of life outcomes. However, little is known about how wheelchair users move about and engage in social interactions within their life-spaces. In this project, we investigate the social participation performance of the wheelchair users based on a combination of geolocational and lifestyle survey data collected over a period of three months. This paper adopts a multi-variate approach combining geolocational travel patterns and various factors such as independence, willingness and self-perception to provide multi-faceted analysis to their lifestyles. We provide profiles of …
A Fast Anderson-Chebyshev Acceleration For Nonlinear Optimization, Zhize Li, Jian Li
A Fast Anderson-Chebyshev Acceleration For Nonlinear Optimization, Zhize Li, Jian Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Anderson acceleration (or Anderson mixing) is an efficient acceleration method for fixed point iterations $x_{t+1}=G(x_t)$, e.g., gradient descent can be viewed as iteratively applying the operation $G(x) \triangleq x-\alpha\nabla f(x)$. It is known that Anderson acceleration is quite efficient in practice and can be viewed as an extension of Krylov subspace methods for nonlinear problems. In this paper, we show that Anderson acceleration with Chebyshev polynomial can achieve the optimal convergence rate $O(\sqrt{\kappa}\ln\frac{1}{\epsilon})$, which improves the previous result $O(\kappa\ln\frac{1}{\epsilon})$ provided by (Toth and Kelley, 2015) for quadratic functions. Moreover, we provide a convergence analysis for minimizing general nonlinear problems. Besides, …
Dual-Dropout Graph Convolutional Network For Predicting Synthetic Lethality In Human Cancers, Ruichu Cai, Xuexin Chen, Yuan Fang, Min Wu, Yuexing Hao
Dual-Dropout Graph Convolutional Network For Predicting Synthetic Lethality In Human Cancers, Ruichu Cai, Xuexin Chen, Yuan Fang, Min Wu, Yuexing Hao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Motivation: Synthetic lethality (SL) is a promising form of gene interaction for cancer therapy, as it is able to identify specific genes to target at cancer cells without disrupting normal cells. As high-throughput wet-lab settings are often costly and face various challenges, computational approaches have become a practical complement. In particular, predicting SLs can be formulated as a link prediction task on a graph of interacting genes. Although matrix factorization techniques have been widely adopted in link prediction, they focus on mapping genes to latent representations in isolation, without aggregating information from neighboring genes. Graph convolutional networks (GCN) can capture …

Rethinking Pruning For Accelerating Deep Inference At The Edge, Dawei Gao, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Ke Xu, Lothar Thiele
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There is a growing trend to deploy deep neural networks at the edge for high-accuracy, real-time data mining and user interaction. Applications such as speech recognition and language understanding often apply a deep neural network to encode an input sequence and then use a decoder to generate the output sequence. A promising technique to accelerate these applications on resource-constrained devices is network pruning, which compresses the size of the deep neural network without severe drop in inference accuracy. However, we observe that although existing network pruning algorithms prove effective to speed up the prior deep neural network, they lead to …

Adaptive Task Sampling For Meta-Learning, Chenghao Liu, Zhihao Wang, Doyen Sahoo, Yuan Fang, Kun Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Meta-learning methods have been extensively studied and applied in computer vision, especially for few-shot classification tasks. The key idea of meta-learning for few-shot classification is to mimic the few-shot situations faced at test time by randomly sampling classes in meta-training data to construct fewshot tasks for episodic training. While a rich line of work focuses solely on how to extract meta-knowledge across tasks, we exploit the complementary problem on how to generate informative tasks. We argue that the randomly sampled tasks could be sub-optimal and uninformative (e.g., the task of classifying “dog” from “laptop” is often trivial) to the meta-learner. …

Feature Pyramid Transformer, Dong Zhang, Hanwang Zhang, Jinhui Tang, Meng Wang, Xian-Sheng Hua, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Feature interactions across space and scales underpin modern visual recognition systems because they introduce beneficial visual contexts. Conventionally, spatial contexts are passively hidden in the CNN’s increasing receptive fields or actively encoded by non-local convolution. Yet, the non-local spatial interactions are not across scales, and thus they fail to capture the non-local contexts of objects (or parts) residing in different scales. To this end, we propose a fully active feature interaction across both space and scales, called Feature Pyramid Transformer (FPT). It transforms any feature pyramid into another feature pyramid of the same size but with richer contexts, by using …

A Unified Framework For Sparse Online Learning, Peilin Zhao, Dayong Wong, Pengcheng Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The amount of data in our society has been exploding in the era of big data. This article aims to address several open challenges in big data stream classification. Many existing studies in data mining literature follow the batch learning setting, which suffers from low efficiency and poor scalability. To tackle these challenges, we investigate a unified online learning framework for the big data stream classification task. Different from the existing online data stream classification techniques, we propose a unified Sparse Online Classification (SOC) framework. Based on SOC, we derive a second-order online learning algorithm and a cost-sensitive sparse online …
