Spoons: Netflix Outage Detection Using Microtext Classification, Eriq A. Augusitne Mar 2013

Spoons: Netflix Outage Detection Using Microtext Classification, Eriq A. Augusitne

Master's Theses

Every week there are over a billion new posts to Twitter services and many of those messages contain feedback to companies about their services. One company that recognizes this unused source of information is Netflix. That is why Netflix initiated the development of a system that lets them respond to the millions of Twitter and Netflix users that are acting as sensors and reporting all types of user visible outages. This system enhances the feedback loop between Netflix and its customers by increasing the amount of customer feedback that Netflix receives and reducing the time it takes for Netflix to …

Suffix Trees For Document Retrieval, Ryan Reck Jun 2012

Suffix Trees For Document Retrieval, Ryan Reck

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a look at the suitability of Suffix Trees for full text indexing and retrieval. Typically suffix trees are built on a character level, where the tree records which characters follow each other character. By building suffix trees for documents based on words instead of characters, the resulting tree effectively indexes every word or sequence of words that occur in any of the documents. Ukkonnen's algorithm is adapted to build word-level suffix trees. But the primary focus is on developing Algorithms for searching the suffix tree for exact and approximate, or fuzzy, matches to arbitrary query strings. A …

Automatic Document Classification In Small Environments, Jonathan David Mcelroy Jan 2012

Automatic Document Classification In Small Environments, Jonathan David Mcelroy

Master's Theses

Document classification is used to sort and label documents. This gives users quicker access to relevant data. Users that work with large inflow of documents spend time filing and categorizing them to allow for easier procurement. The Automatic Classification and Document Filing (ACDF) system proposed here is designed to allow users working with files or documents to rely on the system to classify and store them with little manual attention. By using a system built on Hidden Markov Models, the documents in a smaller desktop environment are categorized with better results than the traditional Naive Bayes implementation of classification.

Developing Digital Field Guides For Plants: A Study From The Perspective Of Users, Emily Roseanne Schwarz Jun 2011

Developing Digital Field Guides For Plants: A Study From The Perspective Of Users, Emily Roseanne Schwarz

Master's Theses

A field guide is a tool to identify an object of natural history. Field guides
cover a wide range of topics from plants to fungi, birds to mammals, and shells to minerals. Traditionally, field guides are books, usually small enough to be carried outdoors . They enjoy wide popularity in modern life; almost every American home and library owns at least one field guide, and the same is also true for other areas of the world.

At this time, companies, non-profits, and universities are developing computer
technologies to replace printed field guides for identifying plants. This thesis
examines the state …

Measurement And Interpolation Of Sea Surface Temperature And Salinity In The Tropical Pacific: A 9,000 Nautical Mile Research Odyssey, Amber Brooks Jun 2010

Measurement And Interpolation Of Sea Surface Temperature And Salinity In The Tropical Pacific: A 9,000 Nautical Mile Research Odyssey, Amber Brooks

Earth and Soil Sciences

The purpose of this project was to compare spline and inverse distance weighting interpolation tools on data collected in the tropical Pacific Ocean by ship and data from a global network of CTD floats, known as Argo floats (fig.1), to provide evidence that technological advancement and integration is aiding our understanding of the ocean-atmosphere system of planet Earth. Thirty-one sea surface temperature and salinity samples were manually taken across a 9,000 nautical mile trek of the Pacific Ocean for the months of April, May and June 2008. Argo ASCII globally gridded monthly averaged sea surface temperature and salinity data, from …

Employee Time Scheduling, Mark Peter Smith Jun 2010

Employee Time Scheduling, Mark Peter Smith

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Small business managers face the common problem of employee time scheduling. There is a solution to this problem in the form of an application called Lemming Scheduler. Lemming Scheduler is a Java based employee time scheduling program. Its features include a desktop based application that stores employee and business information as well as a web interface for employees to view schedules and update availability. The desktop application uses employee and shift information to automatically generate schedules. The generated schedules are viewable by employees outside of work by way of the web interface. Lemming Scheduler provides a light weight interface for …

Bay Audio Repair Website & Data Management Application, Michael Shelley Mar 2010

Bay Audio Repair Website & Data Management Application, Michael Shelley

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The goal of this senior project was to build a website and software application to receive and manage audio equipment repair requests for a small startup company called Bay Audio Repair (BAR). Furthermore, it allowed me to gain experience in web development and software engineering practices, specifically requirements gathering, design and implementation. The website provides an online interface for BAR’s customers to request repairs and the application allows BAR employees to update the progress of a repair. Several technologies were used in the system’s construction: HTML, XML, PHP, and C#.

Updated Bus Routes And Text Messaging System For San Luis Obispo Public Transit System Web Application, Matthew Bojorquez Jan 2010

Updated Bus Routes And Text Messaging System For San Luis Obispo Public Transit System Web Application, Matthew Bojorquez

Computer Engineering

As gas prices continue to rise and people become more aware of their carbon footprint, public transportation becomes more economically, environmentally, and sustainably viable. Currently, bus route timetables are available inside buses and at the transit center, but many users have little knowledge of how to read them. Therefore, to entice more people into using public transportation, we must make riding the buses less of a hassle for users. The Efficient Deployment of Advanced Public Transportation Systems (EDAPTS) system attempts to accomplish this. Building upon a web application designed by Jeff Tikkanen, a former Cal Poly student, that places bus …

Recommender System For Audio Recordings, Jong Seo Lee Jan 2010

Recommender System For Audio Recordings, Jong Seo Lee

Master's Theses

Nowadays the largest E-commerce or E-service websites offer millions of products for sale. A Recommender system is defined as software used by such websites for recommending commercial or noncommercial product items to users according to the users’ tastes. In this project, we develop a recommender system for a private multimedia web service company. In particular, we devise three recommendation engines using different data filtering methods – named weighted-average, K-nearest neighbors, and item-based – which are based on collaborative filtering techniques, which work by recording user preferences on items and by anticipating the future likes and dislikes of users by comparing …

Exercise Power Grid Display And Web Interface, Alexander (Alex) Chernetz Dec 2009

Exercise Power Grid Display And Web Interface, Alexander (Alex) Chernetz

Computer Engineering

The 2008-2009 expansion of the Recreation Center at Cal Poly includes three new rooms with cardiovascular fitness equipment. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development, the new machines connect to the main power grid and generate power during a workout. This document explains the process of quantifying and expressing the power generated using two interfaces: an autonomous display designed for a television with a text size and amount of detail adaptable to multiple television sizes and viewing distances, and an interactive, more detailed Web interface accessible with any Java-capable computer system or browser.
