Automated Agent Ontology Creation For Distributed Databases, Austin A. Bartolo Mar 2004

Automated Agent Ontology Creation For Distributed Databases, Austin A. Bartolo

Theses and Dissertations

In distributed database environments, the combination of resources from multiple sources requiring different interfaces is a universal problem. The current solution requires an expert to generate an ontology, or mapping, which contains all interconnections between the various fields in the databases. This research proposes the application of software agents in automating the ontology creation for distributed database environments with minimal communication. The automatic creation of a domain ontology alleviates the need for experts to manually map one database to other databases in the environment. Using several combined comparison methods, these agents communicate and negotiate similarities between information sources and retain …

Extensible Multi-Agent System For Heterogeneous Database Association Rule Mining And Unification, Christopher G. Marks

Theses and Dissertations

The Probabilities, Expert System, Knowledge, and Inference (PESKI) System uses the data mining of association rules to fill incompleteness in the knowledge of an expert system. The rules are mined from transactional data sources and then incorporated using an existing link to PESKI. One method of providing a system that will easily allow new data sources to be added is using an information gathering agent-based system. This research first develops a methodology for designing and creating a multi-agent system. It then applies this methodology to design a platform independent means of data mining data sources of any format. The use …

Air Force Materiel Command (Afmc) Modeling, Simulation, And Analysis (Ms&A) Interactive Database, Timothy J. Wagner Sep 1995

Air Force Materiel Command (Afmc) Modeling, Simulation, And Analysis (Ms&A) Interactive Database, Timothy J. Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

This study develops a high level, unifying taxonomy for Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis (MS&A) products for the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). AFMC is concerned that limited resources are being expended on duplicative MS&A efforts. No mechanism exists that would confirm or deny this concern, so it was suggested that a database could be developed to catalog and track AFMC's MS&A inventory. First, it was necessary to determine the information that a decision maker needs to select a suitable MS&A product. Potential traits and characteristics were identified through review of current regulatory guidance, interviews with MS&A users, and a study …

A General Object Model Transformation System, John P. Mullaney Dec 1994

A General Object Model Transformation System, John P. Mullaney

Theses and Dissertations

Cecil and Fullenkamp developed a program that transforms knowledge captured in an object-model in one environment into a different object-model in a different environment. This program worked well for the intended purpose, but if one of the object-models is replaced by a different object-model then this transformation program has to be re-engineered. As the object-modeling paradigm becomes more prevalent, many systems are experiencing this problem. The primary goal of this research was to determine what reusable knowledge could be extracted from these types of program and used to build a general object-model transformer that generalizes such transformation programs. Toward this …

Using Database Technology To Support Domain-Oriented Application Composition Systems, Danny A. Cecil, Joseph A. Fullenkamp Dec 1993

Using Database Technology To Support Domain-Oriented Application Composition Systems, Danny A. Cecil, Joseph A. Fullenkamp

Theses and Dissertations

This research designed and prototyped an OODBMS technology base to store and retrieve various types of domain artifacts for domain-oriented application composition systems (DOACS). We developed object-oriented database schemas for a validating domain and the Object-Connection-Update software architecture. We implemented an inheritance relationship between the schemas so a domain model can inherit an architectural structure from an architecture model allowing us to isolate domain-specific knowledge from architecture-specific knowledge. We also developed a meta-model to formally define domain models in the database. We then developed a set of database methods to transform a domain model into a database schema for storing …

Entity-Relationship Versus Object-Oriented Modeling And The Underlying Dbms, Kevin J. Routhier Dec 1992

Entity-Relationship Versus Object-Oriented Modeling And The Underlying Dbms, Kevin J. Routhier

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the impressive accomplishments in relational database research, greater support is needed for persistence of the new types of data encountered with object-oriented programming. The concept of object-orientation is not new in the realm of programming; however, its utilization in database management systems is still immature. Regardless of this fact, there is an urgency for object-oriented database technology. With this increase in demand for the next generation databases comes the need to examine object-oriented data modeling versus the conventional entity-relationship modeling of relational database design. This thesis objective is to analyze both paradigms to determine if object-oriented modeling can significantly …
