Autonomous Agents In Snake Game Via Deep Reinforcement Learning, Zhepei Wei, Di Wang, Ming Zhang, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao, You Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Since DeepMind pioneered a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) model to play the Atari games, DRL has become a commonly adopted method to enable the agents to learn complex control policies in various video games. However, similar approaches may still need to be improved when applied to more challenging scenarios, where reward signals are sparse and delayed. In this paper, we develop a refined DRL model to enable our autonomous agent to play the classical Snake Game, whose constraint gets stricter as the game progresses. Specifically, we employ a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained with a variant of Q-learning. Moreover, we …

Analysis Of Public Transportation Patterns In A Densely Populated City With Station-Based Shared Bikes, Di Wang, Evan Wu, Ah-Hwee Tan Jul 2018

Analysis Of Public Transportation Patterns In A Densely Populated City With Station-Based Shared Bikes, Di Wang, Evan Wu, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Densely populated cities face great challenges of high transportation demand and limited physical space. Thus, in these cities, the public transportation system is heavily relied on. Conventional public transportation modes such as bus, taxi and subway have been globally deployed over the past century. In the last decade, a new type of public transportation mode, shared bike, emerged in many cities. These shared bikes are deployed by either government-regulated or profit-driven companies and are either station-based or station-less. Nonetheless, all of them are designed to better solve the last-mile problem in densely populated cities as complements to the conventional public …

The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson Jun 2018

The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson

Computer Engineering

Modern chess engines have the ability to augment their evaluation by using massive tables containing billions of positions and their memorized solutions. This report examines the importance of these tables to better understand the circumstances under which they should be used. The analysis conducted in this paper empirically examines differences in size and speed of memorized positions and their impacts on engine strength. Using this technique, situations where memorized tables improve play (and situations where they do not) are discovered.

Libraryguru: Api Recommendation For Android Developers, Weizhao Yuan, Hoang H. Nguyen, Lingxiao Jiang, Yuting Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developing modern mobile applications often require the uses of many libraries specific for the mobile platform, which can be overwhelmingly too many for application developers to find what are needed for a functionality and where and how to use them properly. This paper presents a tool, named LibraryGuru, to recommend suitable Android APIs for given functionality descriptions. It not only recommends functional APIs that can be invoked for implementing the functionality, but also recommends event callback APIs that are inherent in the Android framework and need to be overridden in the application. LibraryGuru internally builds correlation databases among various functionality …

Region-Aware Reflection Removal With Unified Content And Gradient Priors, Renjie Wan, Boxin Shi, Ling-Yu Duan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Wen Gao, Alex C. Kot Jun 2018

Region-Aware Reflection Removal With Unified Content And Gradient Priors, Renjie Wan, Boxin Shi, Ling-Yu Duan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Wen Gao, Alex C. Kot

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Removing the undesired reflections in images taken through the glass is of broad application to various image processing and computer vision tasks. Existing single image-based solutions heavily rely on scene priors such as separable sparse gradients caused by different levels of blur, and they are fragile when such priors are not observed. In this paper, we notice that strong reflections usually dominant a limited region in the whole image, and propose a region-aware reflection removal approach by automatically detecting and heterogeneously processing regions with and without reflections. We integrate content and gradient priors to jointly achieve missing contents restoration, as …

How Does Developer Interaction Relate To Software Quality? An Examination Of Product Development Data, Subhajit Datta Jun 2018

How Does Developer Interaction Relate To Software Quality? An Examination Of Product Development Data, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Industrial software systems are being increasingly developed by large and distributed teams. Tools like collaborative development environments (CDE) are used to facilitate interaction between members of such teams, with the expectation that social factors around the interaction would facilitate team functioning. In this paper, we first identify typically social characteristics of interaction in a software development team: reachability, connection, association, and clustering. We then examine how these factors relate to the quality of software produced by a team, in terms of the number of defects, through an empirical study of 70+ teams, involving 900+ developers in total, spread across 30+ …

Semantic Data Storage In Information Systems, Jean Vincent Fonou Dombeu, Raoul Kwuimi May 2018

Semantic Data Storage In Information Systems, Jean Vincent Fonou Dombeu, Raoul Kwuimi

The African Journal of Information Systems

The storage and retrieval of information are important functions of information systems (IS). These IS functions have been realized for decades, due to the maturity of the relational database technology. In recent years, the concept of Semantic Information System (SIS) has emerged as IS in which information is represented with explicit semantic based on its meaning rather than its syntax to enable its automatic and intelligent processing by computers. At present, there is a shortage of discussions on the topic of semantic data storage in IS as compared to the relational database storage counterpart. This study uses a combination of …

Recommending Apis For Software Evolution, Ferdian Thung May 2018

Recommending Apis For Software Evolution, Ferdian Thung

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Softwares are constantly evolving. This evolution has been made easier through the use of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). By leveraging APIs, developers reuse previously implemented functionalities and concentrate on writing new codes. These APIs may originate from either third parties or internally from other compo- nents of the software that are currently developed. In the first case, developers need to know how to find and use third party APIs. In the second case, developers need to be aware of internal APIs in their own software. In either case, there is often too much information to digest. For instance, finding the …

Anflo: Detecting Anomalous Sensitive Information Flows In Android Apps, Biniam Fisseha Demissie, Mariano Ceccato, Lwin Khin Shar May 2018

Anflo: Detecting Anomalous Sensitive Information Flows In Android Apps, Biniam Fisseha Demissie, Mariano Ceccato, Lwin Khin Shar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smartphone apps usually have access to sensitive user data such as contacts, geo-location, and account credentials and they might share such data to external entities through the Internet or with other apps. Confidentiality of user data could be breached if there are anomalies in the way sensitive data is handled by an app which is vulnerable or malicious. Existing approaches that detect anomalous sensitive data flows have limitations in terms of accuracy because the definition of anomalous flows may differ for different apps with different functionalities; it is normal for “Health” apps to share heart rate information through the Internet …

Creating A Reproducible Metadata Transformation Pipeline Using Technology Best Practices, Cara Key, Mike Waugh Apr 2018

Creating A Reproducible Metadata Transformation Pipeline Using Technology Best Practices, Cara Key, Mike Waugh

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Over the course of two years, a team of librarians and programmers from LSU Libraries migrated the 186 collections of the Louisiana Digital Library from OCLC's CONTENTdm platform over to the open-source Islandora platform.

Early in the process, the team understood the value of creating a reproducible metadata transformation pipeline, because there were so many unknowns at the beginning of the process along with the certainty that mistakes would be made. This presentation will describe how the team used innovative and collaborative tools, such as Trello, Ansible, Vagrant, VirtualBox, git and GitHub to accomplish the task.

The Impact Of Rapid Release Cycles On The Integration Delay Of Fixed Issues, Daniel Alencar Da Costa, Shane Mcintosh, Christoph Treude, Uirá Kulesza, Ahmed E. Hassan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The release frequency of software projects has increased in recent years. Adopters of so-called rapid releases—short release cycles, often on the order of weeks, days, or even hours—claim that they can deliver fixed issues (i.e., implemented bug fixes and new features) to users more quickly. However, there is little empirical evidence to support these claims. In fact, our prior work shows that code integration phases may introduce delays for rapidly releasing projects—98% of the fixed issues in the rapidly releasing Firefox project had their integration delayed by at least one release. To better understand the impact that rapid release cycles …

Domain-Specific Cross-Language Relevant Question Retrieval, Bowen Xu, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li Apr 2018

Domain-Specific Cross-Language Relevant Question Retrieval, Bowen Xu, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Chinese developers often cannot effectively search questions in English, because they may have difficulties in translating technical words from Chinese to English and formulating proper English queries. For the purpose of helping Chinese developers take advantage of the rich knowledge base of Stack Overflow and simplify the question retrieval process, we propose an automated cross-language relevant question retrieval (CLRQR) system to retrieve relevant English questions for a given Chinese question. CLRQR first extracts essential information (both Chinese and English) from the title and description of the input Chinese question, then performs domain-specific translation of the essential Chinese information into English, …

Visualizing Research Impact Through Citation Data, Yong Wang, Conglei Shi, Liangyue Li, Hanghang Tong, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Research impact plays a critical role in evaluating the research quality and influence of a scholar, a journal, or a conference. Many researchers have attempted to quantify research impact by introducing different types of metrics based on citation data, such as h-index, citation count, and impact factor. These metrics are widely used in the academic community. However, quantitative metrics are highly aggregated in most cases and sometimes biased, which probably results in the loss of impact details that are important for comprehensively understanding research impact. For example, which research area does a researcher have great research impact on? How does …

Things You May Not Know About Android (Un)Packers: A Systematic Study Based On Whole-System Emulation, Yue Duan, Mu Zhang, Abhishek Vasist Bhaskar, Heng Yin, Xiaorui Pan, Tongxin Li, Xueqiang Wang, Xiaofeng Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The prevalent usage of runtime packers has complicated Android malware analysis, as both legitimate and malicious apps are leveraging packing mechanisms to protect themselves against reverse engineer. Although recent efforts have been made to analyze particular packing techniques, little has been done to study the unique characteristics of Android packers. In this paper, we report the first systematic study on mainstream Android packers, in an attempt to understand their security implications. For this purpose, we developed DROIDUNPACK, a whole-system emulation based Android packing analysis framework, which compared with existing tools, relies on intrinsic characteristics of Android runtime (rather than heuristics), …

Identifying Self-Admitted Technical Debt In Open Source Projects Using Text Mining, Qiao Huang, Emad Shihab, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li Feb 2018

Identifying Self-Admitted Technical Debt In Open Source Projects Using Text Mining, Qiao Huang, Emad Shihab, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Technical debt is a metaphor to describe the situation in which long-term code quality is traded for short-term goals in software projects. Recently, the concept of self-admitted technical debt (SATD) was proposed, which considers debt that is intentionally introduced, e.g., in the form of quick or temporary fixes. Prior work on SATD has shown that source code comments can be used to successfully detect SATD, however, most current state-of-the-art classification approaches of SATD rely on manual inspection of the source code comments. In this paper, we proposed an automated approach to detect SATD in source code comments using text mining. …

Support Vector Machines For Image Spam Analysis, Aneri Chavda, Katerina Potika, Fabio Di Troia, Mark Stamp Jan 2018

Support Vector Machines For Image Spam Analysis, Aneri Chavda, Katerina Potika, Fabio Di Troia, Mark Stamp

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Email is one of the most common forms of digital communication. Spam is unsolicited bulk email, while image spam consists of spam text embedded inside an image. Image spam is used as a means to evade text-based spam filters, and hence image spam poses a threat to email-based communication. In this research, we analyze image spam detection using support vector machines (SVMs), which we train on a wide variety of image features. We use a linear SVM to quantify the relative importance of the features under consideration. We also develop and analyze a realistic “challenge” dataset that illustrates the limitations …

Exact And Heuristic Approaches For The Multi-Agent Orienteering Problem With Capacity Constraints, Wenjie Wang, Hoong Chuin Lau, Shih-Fen Cheng Jan 2018

Exact And Heuristic Approaches For The Multi-Agent Orienteering Problem With Capacity Constraints, Wenjie Wang, Hoong Chuin Lau, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces and addresses a new multiagent variant of the orienteering problem (OP), namely the multi-agent orienteering problem with capacity constraints (MAOPCC). Different from the existing variants of OP, MAOPCC allows a group of visitors to concurrently visit a node but limits the number of visitors simultaneously being served at each node. In this work, we solve MAOPCC in a centralized manner and optimize the total collected rewards of all agents. A branch and bound algorithm is first proposed to find an optimal MAOPCC solution. Since finding an optimal solution for MAOPCC can become intractable as the number of …

Smart Monitoring Via Participatory Ble Relaying, Meeralakshmi Radhakrishnan, Sougata Sen, Archan Misra, Youngki Lee, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We espouse the vision of a smart object/campus architecture where sensors attached to smart objects use BLE as communication interface, and where smartphones act as opportunistic relays to transfer the data. We explore the feasibility of the vision with real-world Wi-Fi based location traces from our university campus. Our feasibility studies establish that redundancy exists in user movement within the indoor spaces, and that this redundancy can be exploited for collecting sensor data in an opportunistic, yet fair manner. We develop a couple of alternative heuristics that address the BLE energy asymmetry challenge by intelligently duty-cycling the scanning actions of …

Skylens: Visual Analysis Of Skyline On Multi-Dimensional Data, Xun Zhao, Yanhong Wu, Weiwei Cui, Xinnan Du, Yuan Chen, Yong Wang, Dik Lun Lee, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Skyline queries have wide-ranging applications in fields that involve multi-criteria decision making, including tourism, retail industry, and human resources. By automatically removing incompetent candidates, skyline queries allow users to focus on a subset of superior data items (i.e.. the skyline), thus reducing the decision-making overhead. However, users are still required to interpret and compare these superior items manually before making a successful choice. This task is challenging because of two issues. First, people usually have fuzzy, unstable, and inconsistent preferences when presented with multiple candidates. Second, skyline queries do not reveal the reasons for the superiority of certain skyline points …

In a data streaming model, a data owner releases records or documents to a set of users with matching interests, in such a way that the match in interest can be calculated from the correlation between each pair of document and user query. For scalability and availability reasons, this calculation is delegated to third-party servers, which gives rise to the need to protect the integrity and privacy of the documents and user queries. In this paper, we propose a server-aided data stream monitoring scheme (DSM) to address the aforementioned integrity and privacy challenges, so that the users are able to …

D-Watch: Embracing “Bad” Multipaths For Device-Free Localization With Cots Rfid Devices, Ju Wang, Jie Xiong, Hongbo Jiang, Xiaojiang Chen, Dingyi Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Device-free localization, which does not require any device attached to the target, is playing a critical role in many applications, such as intrusion detection, elderly monitoring and so on. This paper introduces D-Watch, a device-free system built on the top of low cost commodity-off-the-shelf RFID hardware. Unlike previous works which consider multipaths detrimental, D-Watch leverages the ''bad'' multipaths to provide a decimeter-level localization accuracy without offline training. D-Watch harnesses the angle-of-arrival information from the RFID tags' backscatter signals. The key intuition is that whenever a target blocks a signal's propagation path, the signal power experiences a drop which can be …

Robust Human Activity Recognition Using Lesser Number Of Wearable Sensors, Di Wang, Edwin Candinegara, Junhui Hou, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, research on the recognition of human physical activities solely using wearable sensors has received more and more attention. Compared to other types of sensory devices such as surveillance cameras, wearable sensors are preferred in most activity recognition applications mainly due to their non-intrusiveness and pervasiveness. However, many existing activity recognition applications or experiments using wearable sensors were conducted in the confined laboratory settings using specifically developed gadgets. These gadgets may be useful for a small group of people in certain specific scenarios, but probably will not gain their popularity because they introduce additional costs and they are …
