Living With Artificial Intelligence – Developing A Theory On Trust In Health Chatbots, Weiyu Wang, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The current world is AI-filled and AI-fueled. Humans need to be able to live in harmony with AI. In this research, we aim to develop a theory on Trust between human and health chatbots. With the development of intelligent personal assistants, chatbots are becoming common and ubiquitous. Chatbots can behave as a conversational partner, complete information acquisition, and provide responses to inquiries. Chatbots have been widely used in the healthcare area, supporting physicians and assisting patients. The potential threats to privacy issues and the unpredictable performances of the chatbots hindered people’s trust and adoption of the new technology. This research-in-progress …

A Characterization Of The Medical-Legal Partnership (Mlp) Of Nebraska Medicine, Jordan Pieper
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
This research study was completed at Legal Aid of Nebraska’s Health, Education, and Law Project through the partnership it has formed working with Nebraska Medicine and Iowa Legal Aid. Traditionally, health and disease have always been viewed exclusively as "healthcare" issues. But with healthcare consistently growing towards holistic approaches to help patients, we now know there are deeper, structural conditions of society that can act as strong driving forces of a person's poor daily living conditions that can negatively impact health. The importance of a Medical-Legal Partnership is that it considers a patient's social determinants of health (SDHs). The goal …

Is Information Systems Misuse Always Bad? A New Perspective On Is Misuse In Hospitals Under The Context Of Disasters, Dheyaaldin Alsalman
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Although the extant literature has investigated how individuals engage in inappropriate behaviors based on the rational choice theory (RCT) (e.g., computer misconduct), the neutralization theory (e.g., IS security policies violation), and workarounds under normal situations, it has given little consideration to how individuals are involved in misuse of information systems with a good intention under the context of disasters. To fill this research gap, we propose a selfless misuse model, which offers a theoretical explanation for the concept of individuals’ selfless misuse intention under uncertainty caused by disasters. In this study, we show why employees make decisions to misuse the …

This chapter is based on exploiting the network-based representations of proteins, metagraphs, in protein-protein interaction network to identify candidate disease-causing proteins. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks are effective tools in studying the functional roles of proteins in the development of various diseases. However, they are insufficient without the support of additional biological knowledge for proteins such as their molecular functions and biological processes. To enhance PPI networks, we utilize biological properties of individual proteins as well. More specifically, we integrate keywords from UniProt database describing protein properties into the PPI network and construct a novel heterogeneous PPI-Keyword (PPIK) network consisting …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mining social media messages such as tweets, blogs, and Facebook posts for health and drug related information has received significant interest in pharmacovigilance research. Social media sites (e.g., Twitter), have been used for monitoring drug abuse, adverse reactions to drug usage, and analyzing expression of sentiments related to drugs. Most of these studies are based on aggregated results from a large population rather than specific sets of individuals. In order to conduct studies at an individual level or specific groups of people, identifying posts mentioning intake of medicine by the user is necessary. Toward this objective we develop a classifier …

Past research has shown the benefits of food journaling in promoting mindful eating and healthier food choices. However, the links between journaling and healthy eating have not been thoroughly examined. Beyond caloric restriction, do journalers consistently and sufficiently consume healthful diets? How different are their eating habits compared to those of average consumers who tend to be less conscious about health? In this study, we analyze the healthy eating behaviors of active food journalers using data from MyFitnessPal. Surprisingly, our findings show that food journalers do not eat as healthily as they should despite their proclivity to health eating and …

A growing body of evidence has shown that incorporating behavioral economics principles into the design of financial incentive programs helps improve their cost-effectiveness, promote individuals' short-term engagement, and increase compliance in health behavior interventions. Yet, their effects on long-term engagement have not been fully examined. In study designs where repeated administration of incentives is required to ensure the regularity of behaviors, the effectiveness of subsequent incentives may decrease as a result of the law of diminishing marginal utility. In this paper, we introduce random-loss incentive-a new financial incentive based on loss aversion and unpredictability principles-to address the problem of individuals' …

Beginning around 1990, efforts were initiated in the medical profession by the U.S. government to transition from paper based medical records to electronic medical records (EMR). By the late 1990s, EMR implementation had already encountered multiple barriers and failures. Then President Bush set forth the goal of implementing electronic health records (EHRs), nationwide within ten years. Again, progress toward EMR implementation was not realized. President Obama put new emphasis on promoting EMR and health care technology. The renewed emphasis did not overcome many of the original problems and induced new failures. Retrospective analyses suggest that failures were induced because programmers …

Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks play an important role in studying the functional roles of proteins, including their association with diseases. However, protein interaction networks are not sufficient without the support of additional biological knowledge for proteins such as their molecular functions and biological processes. To complement and enrich PPI networks, we propose to exploit biological properties of individual proteins. More specifically, we integrate keywords describing protein properties into the PPI network, and construct a novel PPI-Keywords (PPIK) network consisting of both proteins and keywords as two different types of nodes. As disease proteins tend to have a similar topological characteristics …

Searchable encryption (SE) is a promising technique which enables cloud users to conduct search over encrypted cloud data in a privacy-preserving way, especially for the electronic health record (EHR) system that contains plenty of medical history, diagnosis, radiology images, etc. In this paper, we focus on a more practical scenario, also named as the shared multi-owner settings, where each e-health record is co-owned by a fixed number of parties. Although the existing SE schemes under the unshared multi-owner settings can be adapted to this shared scenario, these schemes have to build multiple indexes, which definitely incur higher computational overhead. To save …
