How Knowledge Graph And Attention Help? A Qualitative Analysis Into Bag-Level Relation Extraction, Zikun Hu, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Tat-Seng Chua Aug 2021

How Knowledge Graph And Attention Help? A Qualitative Analysis Into Bag-Level Relation Extraction, Zikun Hu, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowledge Graph (KG) and attention mechanism have been demonstrated effective in introducing and selecting useful information for weakly supervised methods. However, only qualitative analysis and ablation study are provided as evidence. In this paper, we contribute a dataset and propose a paradigm to quantitatively evaluate the effect of attention and KG on bag-level relation extraction (RE). We find that (1) higher attention accuracy may lead to worse performance as it may harm the model’s ability to extract entity mention features; (2) the performance of attention is largely influenced by various noise distribution patterns, which is closely related to real-world datasets; …

Leveraging Two Types Of Global Graph For Sequential Fashion Recommendation, Yujuan Ding, Yunshan Ma, Wai Keung Wong, Tat‑Seng Chua Aug 2021

Leveraging Two Types Of Global Graph For Sequential Fashion Recommendation, Yujuan Ding, Yunshan Ma, Wai Keung Wong, Tat‑Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sequential fashion recommendation is of great significance in online fashion shopping, which accounts for an increasing portion of either fashion retailing or online e-commerce. The key to building an effective sequential fashion recommendation model lies in capturing two types of patterns: the personal fashion preference of users and the transitional relationships between adjacent items. The two types of patterns are usually related to user-item interaction and item-item transition modeling respectively. However, due to the large sets of users and items as well as the sparse historical interactions, it is difficult to train an effective and efficient sequential fashion recommendation model. …

Towards Generative Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis, Wenxuan Zhang, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Lidong Bing, Wai Lam Aug 2021

Towards Generative Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis, Wenxuan Zhang, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Lidong Bing, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) has received increasing attention recently. Most existing work tackles ABSA in a discriminative manner, designing various task-specific classification networks for the prediction. Despite their effectiveness, these methods ignore the rich label semantics in ABSA problems and require extensive task-specific designs. In this paper, we propose to tackle various ABSA tasks in a unified generative framework. Two types of paradigms, namely annotation-style and extraction-style modeling, are designed to enable the training process by formulating each ABSA task as a text generation problem. We conduct experiments on four ABSA tasks across multiple benchmark datasets where our proposed generative …

An Empirical Study Of The Discreteness Prior In Low-Rank Matrix Completion, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Renato Assunção, Marius And Kloft Aug 2021

An Empirical Study Of The Discreteness Prior In Low-Rank Matrix Completion, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Renato Assunção, Marius And Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A reasonable assumption in recommender systems is that the rows (users) and columns (items) of the rating matrix can be split into groups (communities) with the following property: each entry of the matrix is the sum of components corresponding to community behavior and a purely low-rank component corresponding to individual behavior. We investigate (1) whether such a structure is present in real-world datasets, (2) whether the knowledge of the existence of such structure alone can improve performance, without explicit information about the community memberships. To these ends, we formulate a joint optimization problem over all (completed matrix, set of communities) …

A Survey On Ml4vis: Applying Machine Learning Advances To Data Visualization, Qianwen Wang, Zhutian Chen, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Inspired by the great success of machine learning (ML), researchers have applied ML techniques to visualizations to achieve a better design, development, and evaluation of visualizations. This branch of studies, known as ML4VIS, is gaining increasing research attention in recent years. To successfully adapt ML techniques for visualizations, a structured understanding of the integration of ML4VIS is needed. In this article, we systematically survey 88 ML4VIS studies, aiming to answer two motivating questions: “what visualization processes can be assisted by ML?” and “how ML techniques can be used to solve visualization problems? ” This survey reveals seven main processes where …

Are Missing Links Predictable? An Inferential Benchmark For Knowledge Graph Completion, Yixin Cao, Xiang Ji, Xin Lv, Juanzi Li, Yonggang Wen, Hanwang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present InferWiki, a Knowledge Graph Completion (KGC) dataset that improves upon existing benchmarks in inferential ability, assumptions, and patterns. First, each testing sample is predictable with supportive data in the training set. To ensure it, we propose to utilize rule-guided train/test generation, instead of conventional random split. Second, InferWiki initiates the evaluation following the open-world assumption and improves the inferential difficulty of the closed-world assumption, by providing manually annotated negative and unknown triples. Third, we include various inference patterns (e.g., reasoning path length and types) for comprehensive evaluation. In experiments, we curate two settings of InferWiki varying in sizes …

Unified Conversational Recommendation Policy Learning Via Graph-Based Reinforcement Learning, Yang Deng, Yaliang Li, Fei Sun, Bolin Ding, Wai Lam Jul 2021

Unified Conversational Recommendation Policy Learning Via Graph-Based Reinforcement Learning, Yang Deng, Yaliang Li, Fei Sun, Bolin Ding, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversational recommender systems (CRS) enable the traditional recommender systems to explicitly acquire user preferences towards items and attributes through interactive conversations. Reinforcement learning (RL) is widely adopted to learn conversational recommendation policies to decide what attributes to ask, which items to recommend, and when to ask or recommend, at each conversation turn. However, existing methods mainly target at solving one or two of these three decision-making problems in CRS with separated conversation and recommendation components, which restrict the scalability and generality of CRS and fall short of preserving a stable training procedure. In the light of these challenges, we propose …

Dehumor: Visual Analytics For Decomposing Humor, Xingbo Wang, Yao Ming, Tongshuang Wu, Haipeng Zeng, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu Jul 2021

Dehumor: Visual Analytics For Decomposing Humor, Xingbo Wang, Yao Ming, Tongshuang Wu, Haipeng Zeng, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite being a critical communication skill, grasping humor is challenginga successful use of humor requires a mixture of both engaging content build-up and an appropriate vocal delivery (e.g., pause). Prior studies on computational humor emphasize the textual and audio features immediately next to the punchline, yet overlooking longer-term context setup. Moreover, the theories are usually too abstract for understanding each concrete humor snippet. To fill in the gap, we develop DeHumor, a visual analytical system for analyzing humorous behaviors in public speaking. To intuitively reveal the building blocks of each concrete example, DeHumor decomposes each humorous video into multimodal features …

Cache-Efficient Fork-Processing Patterns On Large Graphs, Shengliang Lu, Shixuan Sun, Johns Paul, Yuchen Li, Bingsheng He Jun 2021

Cache-Efficient Fork-Processing Patterns On Large Graphs, Shengliang Lu, Shixuan Sun, Johns Paul, Yuchen Li, Bingsheng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As large graph processing emerges, we observe a costly fork-processing pattern (FPP) that is common in many graph algorithms. The unique feature of the FPP is that it launches many independent queries from different source vertices on the same graph. For example, an algorithm in analyzing the network community profile can execute Personalized PageRanks that start from tens of thousands of source vertices at the same time. We study the efficiency of handling FPPs in state-of-the-art graph processing systems on multi-core architectures, including Ligra, Gemini, and GraphIt. We find that those systems suffer from severe cache miss penalty because of …

Reciprocal Transformations For Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation, Sucheng Ren, Wenxi Liu, Yongtuo Liu, Haoxin Chen, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He Jun 2021

Reciprocal Transformations For Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation, Sucheng Ren, Wenxi Liu, Yongtuo Liu, Haoxin Chen, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unsupervised video object segmentation (UVOS) aims at segmenting the primary objects in videos without any human intervention. Due to the lack of prior knowledge about the primary objects, identifying them from videos is the major challenge of UVOS. Previous methods often regard the moving objects as primary ones and rely on optical flow to capture the motion cues in videos, but the flow information alone is insufficient to distinguish the primary objects from the background objects that move together. This is because, when the noisy motion features are combined with the appearance features, the localization of the primary objects is …

Learning From The Master: Distilling Cross-Modal Advanced Knowledge For Lip Reading, Sucheng Ren, Yong Du, Jianming Lv, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He Jun 2021

Learning From The Master: Distilling Cross-Modal Advanced Knowledge For Lip Reading, Sucheng Ren, Yong Du, Jianming Lv, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Lip reading aims to predict the spoken sentences from silent lip videos. Due to the fact that such a vision task usually performs worse than its counterpart speech recognition, one potential scheme is to distill knowledge from a teacher pretrained by audio signals. However, the latent domain gap between the cross-modal data could lead to a learning ambiguity and thus limits the performance of lip reading. In this paper, we propose a novel collaborative framework for lip reading, and two aspects of issues are considered: 1) the teacher should understand bi-modal knowledge to possibly bridge the inherent cross-modal gap; 2) …

Ganmut: Learning Interpretable Conditional Space For A Gamut Of Emotions, S. D'Apolito, D.P. Paundel, Zhiwu Huang, A.R. Vergara, Gool L. Van Jun 2021

Ganmut: Learning Interpretable Conditional Space For A Gamut Of Emotions, S. D'Apolito, D.P. Paundel, Zhiwu Huang, A.R. Vergara, Gool L. Van

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Humans can communicate emotions through a plethora of facial expressions, each with its own intensity, nuances and ambiguities. The generation of such variety by means of conditional GANs is limited to the expressions encoded in the used label system. These limitations are caused either due to burdensome labeling demand or the confounded label space. On the other hand, learning from inexpensive and intuitive basic categorical emotion labels leads to limited emotion variability. In this paper, we propose a novel GAN-based framework which learns an expressive and interpretable conditional space (usable as a label space) of emotions, instead of conditioning on …

Iquant: Interactive Quantitative Investment Using Sparse Regression Factors, Xuanwu Yue, Qiao Gu, Deyun Wang, Huamin Qu, Yong Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The model-based investing using financial factors is evolving as a principal method for quantitative investment. The main challenge lies in the selection of effective factors towards excess market returns. Existing approaches, either hand-picking factors or applying feature selection algorithms, do not orchestrate both human knowledge and computational power. This paper presents iQUANT, an interactive quantitative investment system that assists equity traders to quickly spot promising financial factors from initial recommendations suggested by algorithmic models, and conduct a joint refinement of factors and stocks for investment portfolio composition. We work closely with professional traders to assemble empirical characteristics of “good” factors …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Diabetes, a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively utilize its insulin, is increasingly recognized as a significant health burden and affects many older adults. Poor sleep quality in diabetic seniors worsens the diabetes condition, but most seniors are tend to regard poor sleep quality as a usual event and do not seek treatment. This study aims to detect poor sleep quality in diabetic seniors through passive in-home monitoring to inform intervention (e.g., seeking diagnosis and treatment) to improve the physical and mental health of diabetic seniors. We derive …

Achieving Differential Privacy And Fairness In Machine Learning, Depeng Xu May 2021

Achieving Differential Privacy And Fairness In Machine Learning, Depeng Xu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Machine learning algorithms are used to make decisions in various applications, such as recruiting, lending and policing. These algorithms rely on large amounts of sensitive individual information to work properly. Hence, there are sociological concerns about machine learning algorithms on matters like privacy and fairness. Currently, many studies only focus on protecting individual privacy or ensuring fairness of algorithms separately without taking consideration of their connection. However, there are new challenges arising in privacy preserving and fairness-aware machine learning. On one hand, there is fairness within the private model, i.e., how to meet both privacy and fairness requirements simultaneously in …

Prediction, Recommendation And Group Analytics Models In The Domain Of Mashup Services And Cyber-Argumentation Platform, Md Mahfuzer Rahman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mashup application development is becoming a widespread software development practice due to its appeal for a shorter application development period. Application developers usually use web APIs from different sources to create a new streamlined service and provide various features to end-users. This kind of practice saves time, ensures reliability, accuracy, and security in the developed applications. Mashup application developers integrate these available APIs into their applications. Still, they have to go through thousands of available web APIs and chose only a few appropriate ones for their application. Recommending relevant web APIs might help application developers in this situation. However, very …

Exploring Ai And Multiplayer In Java, Ronni Kurtzhals Apr 2021

Exploring Ai And Multiplayer In Java, Ronni Kurtzhals

Student Academic Conference

I conducted research into three topics: artificial intelligence, package deployment, and multiplayer servers in Java. This research came together to form my project presentation on the implementation of these topics, which I felt accurately demonstrated the various things I have learned from my courses at Moorhead State University. Several resources were consulted throughout the project, including the work of W3Schools and StackOverflow as well as relevant assignments and textbooks from previous classes. I found this project relevant to computer science and information systems for several reasons, such as the AI component and use of SQL data tables; but it was …

Google Books, Jody Condit Fagan Feb 2021

Google Books, Jody Condit Fagan

Libraries

Google Books’ (GB) full-text search of more than 40 million books offers significant value for libraries and their patrons. However, Google’s refusal to disclose information about the coverage of GB, as well as observed gaps and inaccuracies in the collection and its metadata, makes it difficult to recommend with confidence for a given research need. While most search and retrieval functions work well, glitches aren’t hard to find, which suggests GB development is focused on user experiences that relate to monetization. Privacy and equity concerns surrounding GB mirror those of other big technology platforms. Still, every librarian should familiarize themselves …

Evoking Empathy: A Framework For Describing Empathy Tools, Sydney Pratte, Anthony Tang, Lora Oehlberg Feb 2021

Evoking Empathy: A Framework For Describing Empathy Tools, Sydney Pratte, Anthony Tang, Lora Oehlberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Empathy tools are experiences designed to evoke empathetic responses by placing the user in another’s lived and felt experience. The problem is that designers do not have a common vocabulary to describe empathy tool experiences; consequently, it is difficult to compare/contrast empathy tool designs or to think about their efficacy. To address this problem, we analyzed 26 publications on empathy tools to develop a descriptive framework for designers of empathy tools. Based on our analysis, we found that empathy tools can be described along three dimensions: (i) the amount of agency the tool allows, (ii) the user’s perspective while using …

"Who Can Help Me?'': Knowledge Infused Matching Of Support Seekers And Support Providers During Covid-19 On Reddit, Manas Gaur, Kaushik Roy, Aditya Sharma, Biplav Srivastava, Amit Sheth

Publications

During the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, subreddits on Reddit, such as r/Coronavirus saw a rapid growth in user's requests for help (support seekers - SSs) including individuals with varying professions and experiences with diverse perspectives on care (support providers - SPs). Currently, knowledgeable human moderators match an SS with a user with relevant experience, i.e, an SP on these subreddits. This unscalable process defers timely care. We present a medical knowledge-infused approach to efficient matching of SS and SPs validated by experts for the users affected by anxiety and depression, in the context of with COVID-19. After matching, each SP to …

Coherence And Identity Learning For Arbitrary-Length Face Video Generation, Shuquan Ye, Chu Han, Jiaying Lin, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He Jan 2021

Coherence And Identity Learning For Arbitrary-Length Face Video Generation, Shuquan Ye, Chu Han, Jiaying Lin, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Face synthesis is an interesting yet challenging task in computer vision. It is even much harder to generate a portrait video than a single image. In this paper, we propose a novel video generation framework for synthesizing arbitrary-length face videos without any face exemplar or landmark. To overcome the synthesis ambiguity of face video, we propose a divide-and-conquer strategy to separately address the video face synthesis problem from two aspects, face identity synthesis and rearrangement. To this end, we design a cascaded network which contains three components, Identity-aware GAN (IA-GAN), Face Coherence Network, and Interpolation Network. IA-GAN is proposed to …

Facial Emotion Recognition With Noisy Multi-Task Annotations, S. Zhang, Zhiwu Huang, D.P. Paudel, Gool L. Van Jan 2021

Facial Emotion Recognition With Noisy Multi-Task Annotations, S. Zhang, Zhiwu Huang, D.P. Paudel, Gool L. Van

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human emotions can be inferred from facial expressions. However, the annotations of facial expressions are often highly noisy in common emotion coding models, including categorical and dimensional ones. To reduce human labelling effort on multi-task labels, we introduce a new problem of facial emotion recognition with noisy multitask annotations. For this new problem, we suggest a formulation from the point of joint distribution match view, which aims at learning more reliable correlations among raw facial images and multi-task labels, resulting in the reduction of noise influence. In our formulation, we exploit a new method to enable the emotion prediction and …

Sharper Generalisation Bounds For Pairwise Learning, Yunwen Lei, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft Dec 2020

Sharper Generalisation Bounds For Pairwise Learning, Yunwen Lei, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pairwise learning refers to learning tasks with loss functions depending on a pair of training examples, which includes ranking and metric learning as specific examples. Recently, there has been an increasing amount of attention on the generalization analysis of pairwise learning to understand its practical behavior. However, the existing stability analysis provides suboptimal high-probability generalization bounds. In this paper, we provide a refined stability analysis by developing generalization bounds which can be √nn-times faster than the existing results, where nn is the sample size. This implies excess risk bounds of the order O(n−1/2) (up to a logarithmic factor) for both …

Cost-Sensitive Deep Forest For Price Prediction, Chao Ma, Zhenbing Liu, Zhiguang Cao, Wen Song, Jie Zhang, Weiliang Zeng Nov 2020

Cost-Sensitive Deep Forest For Price Prediction, Chao Ma, Zhenbing Liu, Zhiguang Cao, Wen Song, Jie Zhang, Weiliang Zeng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

For many real-world applications, predicting a price range is more practical and desirable than predicting a concrete value. In this case, price prediction can be regarded as a classification problem. Although deep forest is recognized as the best solution to many classification problems, a crucial issue limits its direct application to price prediction, i.e., it treated all the misclassifications equally no matter how far away they are from the real classes, since their impacts on the accuracy are the same. This is unreasonable to price prediction as the misclassification should be as close to the real price range as possible …

Exploring And Evaluating Attributes, Values, And Structures For Entity Alignment, Zhiyuan Liu, Yixin Cao, Liangming Pan, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu, Tat-Seng Chua Nov 2020

Exploring And Evaluating Attributes, Values, And Structures For Entity Alignment, Zhiyuan Liu, Yixin Cao, Liangming Pan, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Entity alignment (EA) aims at building a unified Knowledge Graph (KG) of rich content by linking the equivalent entities from various KGs. GNN-based EA methods present promising performance by modeling the KG structure defined by relation triples. However, attribute triples can also provide crucial alignment signal but have not been well explored yet. In this paper, we propose to utilize an attributed value encoder and partition the KG into subgraphs to model the various types of attribute triples efficiently. Besides, the performances of current EA methods are overestimated because of the name-bias of existing EA datasets. To make an objective …

Espade: An Efficient And Semantically Secure Shortest Path Discovery For Outsourced Location-Based Services, Bharath K. Samanthula, Divyadharshini Karthikeyan, Boxiang Dong, K. Anitha Kumari

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

With the rapid growth of smart devices and technological advancements in tracking geospatial data, the demand for Location-Based Services (LBS) is facing a constant rise in several domains, including military, healthcare and transportation. It is a natural step to migrate LBS to a cloud environment to achieve on-demand scalability and increased resiliency. Nonetheless, outsourcing sensitive location data to a third-party cloud provider raises a host of privacy concerns as the data owners have reduced visibility and control over the outsourced data. In this paper, we consider outsourced LBS where users want to retrieve map directions without disclosing their location information. …

Cross-Domain Cross-Modal Food Transfer, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jingjing Chen Oct 2020

Cross-Domain Cross-Modal Food Transfer, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jingjing Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The recent works in cross-modal image-to-recipe retrieval pave a new way to scale up food recognition. By learning the joint space between food images and recipes, food recognition is boiled down as a retrieval problem by evaluating the similarity of embedded features. The major drawback, nevertheless, is the difficulty in applying an already-trained model to recognize different cuisines of dishes unknown to the model. In general, model updating with new training examples, in the form of image-recipe pairs, is required to adapt a model to new cooking styles in a cuisine. Nevertheless, in practice, acquiring sufficient number of image-recipe pairs …
