Teaching Successful "Real-World" Software Engineering To The "Net" Generation: Process And Quality Win!, William L. Honig
Teaching Successful "Real-World" Software Engineering To The "Net" Generation: Process And Quality Win!, William L. Honig
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Software engineering skills are critical for students seeking careers as software developers. However, academic course content often fails to teach practical, "real-world" software engineering as it is done in large organizations. Further, the proclivities of the current generation leave students disinclined to the disciplines of process and quality. Academics seldom use the Team Software Process (TSP), a leading methodology of global industries. Four years of data indicate that student teams using TSP can achieve industry levels of productivity and reasonable quality levels. Further, results from 23 teams and over 200 students indicate that these Net-Generation students developed an understanding for …
Obfuscation Framework Based On Functionally Equivalent Combinatorial Logic Families, Moses C. James
Obfuscation Framework Based On Functionally Equivalent Combinatorial Logic Families, Moses C. James
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to be a few building blocks in the bridge between theoretical and practical software obfuscation that researchers will one day construct. We provide a method for random uniform selection of circuits based on a functional signature and specific construction specifiers. Additionally, this thesis includes the first formal definition of an algorithm that performs only static analysis on a program; that is analysis that does not rely on the input and output behavior of the analyzed program. This is analogous to some techniques used in real-world software reverse engineering. Finally, this thesis uses the equivalent circuit library to …

A Classroom Outsourcing Experience For Software Engineering Learning, William L. Honig, Tejasvini Prasad
A Classroom Outsourcing Experience For Software Engineering Learning, William L. Honig, Tejasvini Prasad
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Outsourcing of software development is a key part of globalization, oft misunderstood by computer science students, and possibly a cause of declining enrollments in the field. The authors developed and implemented an outsourcing experience for students in an advanced software engineering course. Student teams at two universities developed game playing programs and outsourced key parts of their systems to the other university. Results show students improved their understanding of outsourcing, developed better appreciation for the importance of software engineering techniques, and created ad hoc communication protocols between teams. The paper concludes with recommendations for expanding the approach used to other …

Simplifying Cyber Foraging For Mobile Devices, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Darren Gergle, Mahadev Satyanarayanan, James Herbsleb
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cyber foraging is the transient and opportunistic use of compute servers by mobile devices. The short market life of such devices makes rapid modification of applications for remote execution an important problem. We describe a solution that combines a "little language" for cyber foraging with an adaptive runtime system. We report results from a user study showing that even novice developers are able to successfully modify large, unfamiliar applications in just a few hours. We also show that the quality of novice-modified and expert-modified applications are comparable in most cases.

Unit Testing Considered Useful, George K. Thiruvathukal, Konstantin Läufer, Benjamin Gonzalez
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Testing is an important part of application development. Hardware engineers, in particular, have a long established history of testing for the obvious reason that it's awfully hard to rebuild a microprocessor every time a bug pops up in the design stage--not to mention the enormous headaches such bugs generate on the software side.

With the continuing growth of computer systems including safety-critical computer control systems, the need for reliable tools to help construct, analyze, and verify such systems also continues to grow. The basic motivation of this work is to build such a formal verification environment for computer-based systems.
An example of such a tool is the Design Oriented Verification and Evaluation (DOVE) created by Australian Defense Science and Technology Organization. One of the advantages of DOVE is that it combines ease of use provided by a graphical user interface for describing specifications in the form of extended state machines with the rigor …
Enhancement Of Software Engineering By Shifting From Software Product To Software Service, Muhammad Saeed, Muhammad Jaffar-Ur- Rehman
Enhancement Of Software Engineering By Shifting From Software Product To Software Service, Muhammad Saeed, Muhammad Jaffar-Ur- Rehman
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
Software development has always been a supply side affair, in which domain experts were the main requirement providers. Software engineers have been creating new technologies, frameworks and methodologies but this has made the software engineering job more complex. Recently all this has been looked at from demand-side prospective. So a new concept of Service Based Software Engineering is shaping up which look at the software as a service rather then a product. This paper is going to analysis the fundamental requirements of such a paradigm shift, by first gathering the concept and then translating this to a workable solution. Different …

Implementing Simple Protocols In Multiple Processors Control Applications, Steve Hsiung, Tyson Mccall, Corinne Ransberger
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Using microprocessor/microcontroller in various control applications is not only one of the major topics in Engineering Technology curricula, but also of interest in industry applications. To accomplish it correctly the process of designing application programs starts from the individual module development through extensive testing, verification, and modification. Applying these developed modules in a useful manner requires the links and integrations that lead to the practical project implementation. Frequently, in students' senior project designs and faculty's research plans, the microprocessor/microcontroller resources become scarce or cause conflicts during the modules' integration stage. To accommodate the shortfall of the resources and resolve any …

Requirement Elicitation Of Large Web Projects., David E. Frazier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the most important aspects of developing a large Web-based project is getting the correct requirements from the client. Time and money can be lost if the requirements are incomplete or inaccurate. Traditional Web design sources tend to gloss over this important activity.
Software engineering is a mature field that can help in the quest for more complete and accurate requirement gathering. This paper explores the ways that traditional software engineering techniques can be applied to Web projects. A methodology is presented based on both existing and new techniques. Several experiments are conducted to determine the usefulness of each …
Software Architecture: Styles And Representational Schemes, Somo Subro Banerjee
Software Architecture: Styles And Representational Schemes, Somo Subro Banerjee
LSU Master's Theses
Software architecture is being widely used today to describe a very high-level design methodology of large software systems. Software architecture represents the overall structure of a system in an abstract, structured manner. A good architectural representation scheme holds the key to the effectiveness of a software architecture description and usage. In this work we look at architectural styles and architectural representation schemes. We propound the idea that the layered architectural model is a suitable candidate for a generalized architectural style and that it can cater to many different problem domains, other than the message-passing systems it has traditionally been used …

Categorizing Non-Functional Requirements Using A Hierarchy In Uml., James David Moody
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are a subset of requirements, the means by which software system developers and clients communicate about the functionality of the system to be built. This paper has three main parts: first, an overview of how non-functional requirements relate to software engineering is given, along with a survey of NFRs in the software engineering literature. Second, a collection of 161 NFRs is diagrammed using the Unified Modelling Language, forming a tool with which developers may more easily identify and write additional NFRs. Third, a lesson plan is presented, a learning module intended for an undergraduate software engineering curriculum. …
A Brief History Of The Object-Oriented Approach, Luiz Fernando Capretz
A Brief History Of The Object-Oriented Approach, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Unlike other fads, the object-oriented paradigm is here to stay. The road towards an object-oriented approach is described and several object-oriented programming languages are reviewed. Since the object-oriented paradigm promised to revolutionize software development, in the 1990s, demand for object-oriented software systems increased dramatically; consequently, several methodologies have been proposed to support software development based on thatparadigm. Also presented are a survey and a classification schemefor object-oriented methodologies.
Inquisitive Pattern Recognition, Amy L. Magnus
Inquisitive Pattern Recognition, Amy L. Magnus
Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Defense and the Department of the Air Force have funded automatic target recognition for several decades with varied success. The foundation of automatic target recognition is based upon pattern recognition. In this work, we present new pattern recognition concepts specifically in the area of classification and propose new techniques that will allow one to determine when a classifier is being arrogant. Clearly arrogance in classification is an undesirable attribute. A human is being arrogant when their expressed conviction in a decision overstates their actual experience in making similar decisions. Likewise given an input feature vector, we say …
The Generalizability Of Private Sector Research On Software Project Management In Two Usaf Organizations: An Exploratory Study, Michael R. Garman
The Generalizability Of Private Sector Research On Software Project Management In Two Usaf Organizations: An Exploratory Study, Michael R. Garman
Theses and Dissertations
Project managers typically set three success criteria for their projects: meet specifications, be on time, and be on budget. However, software projects frequently fail to meet these criteria. Software engineers, acquisition officers, and project managers have all studied this issue and made recommendations for achieving success. But most of this research in peer reviewed journals has focused on the private sector. Researchers have also identified software acquisitions as one of the major differences between the private sector and public sector MIS. This indicates that the elements for a successful software project in the public sector may be different from the …
Level Of Essentialness Of A Node In Flowcharts And Its Application To Program Testing, Osman Kandara
Level Of Essentialness Of A Node In Flowcharts And Its Application To Program Testing, Osman Kandara
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Program testing is important to develop bug free software. A common form of program testing involves selecting test cases which execute (cover) a given set W of statements in the program. In regression testing, W typically forms a small subset of the program. It is often possible to find an alternate small set W so that execution of W' implies execution of W. We develop concepts and algorithms for finding W' as small as possible with the condition that the statements in W' are "close" to those in W in terms of program structure. These concepts generalize the notion of …

Software undergoes change at all stages of the software development process. Changing requirements represent risks to the success and completion of a project. It is critical for project management to determine the impact of requirement changes in order to control the change process. We present a requirements traceability based impact analysis methodology to predictively evaluate requirement changes for software development projects. Trace-based Impact Analysis Methodology (TIAM) is a methodology utilizing the trace information, along with attributes of the work products and traces, to define a requirement change impact metric for determining the severity of a requirement change. We define the …

Visual Execution Analysis For Multiagent Systems, Chong Kil
Visual Execution Analysis For Multiagent Systems, Chong Kil
Theses and Dissertations
Multiagent systems have become increasingly important in developing complex software systems. Multiagent systems introduce collective intelligence and provide benefits such as flexibility, scalability, decentralization, and increased reliability. A software agent is a high-level software abstraction that is capable of performing given tasks in an environment without human intervention. Although multiagent systems provide a convenient and powerful way to organize complex software systems, developing such system is very complicated. To help manage this complexity this research develops a methodology and technique for analyzing, monitoring and troubleshooting multiagent systems execution. This is accomplished by visualizing a multiagent system at multiple levels of …

We describe an implementation of the Infopipe abstraction for information flow applications. We have implemented software tools that translate the SIP/XIP variant of Infopipe specification into executable code. These tools are evaluated through the rewriting of two realistic applications using Infopipes: a multimedia streaming program and a web source combination application. Measurements show that Infopipe-generated code has the same execution overhead as the manually written original version. Source code of Infopipe version is reduced by 36% to 85% compared to the original.

Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force Combat Climatology Center (AFCCC) is tasked to provide long-range seasonal forecasts for worldwide locations. Currently, the best long-range temperature forecasts the weather community has are the climatological standard normals. This study creates a stepping-stone into the solution of long-range forecasting by finding a process to predict temperatures better than those using climatological standard normals or simple frequency distributions of occurrences. Northern Hemispheric teleconnection indices and the standardized Southern Oscillation index are statistically compared to three-month summed Heating Degree Days (HDDs) and Cooling Degree Days (CDDs) at 14 U.S. locations. First, linear regression was accomplished. The results showed …

Computing Cyclomatic Complexity With Cubic Flowgraphs, Yongming Tang, Ali H. Dogru, Franz J. Kurfess, Murat M. Tanik
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Two new methods for the computation of cyclomatic complexity especially for decomposable representations are introduced. Building software by integration is a developing paradigm, especially enabled by the emerging component technologies. Decomposition of the design for a top-down approach is a prerequisite for this paradigm. Cubic flowgraphs are instrumental in providing formalisms for decomposition and integration. Cyclomatic complexity analysis of a design representation that is decomposable is the goal of this research. In addition to introducing cyclomatic complexity computation using cubic flowgraphs, preservation of cyclomatic complexity in the decomposition of the cubic flowgraph is also presented.
