Using Agile Software Development Practices In A Research Oriented Distributed Simulation, Douglas James Mielke
Using Agile Software Development Practices In A Research Oriented Distributed Simulation, Douglas James Mielke
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Although sometimes controversial, agile methodologies have proven to be a viable choice for some software development projects. Projects suited to agile methodologies are those that involve new technology, have requirements that change rapidly, and are controlled by small, talented teams. Much literature about agile software development leans towards business products and non-government entities. Only a handful of literature resources mention agile software development being used in government contracts and even fewer resources mention research projects. NASA's Airspace and Traffic Operations Simulation (ATOS) is a research oriented simulation that doesn't follow the traditional business project mold. In an effort to gain …
Simulation And Visualization Of Environments With Multidimensional Time, Luther A. Tychonievich
Simulation And Visualization Of Environments With Multidimensional Time, Luther A. Tychonievich
Theses and Dissertations
This work introduces the notion of computational hypertime, or the simulation and visualization of hypothetical environments possessing multidimensional time. An overview of hypertime is provided, including an intuitive visualization paradigm and a discussion of the failure of common simulation techniques when extended to include multidimensional time. A condition for differential equations describing hypertime motion to be amenable to standard time-iterative simulation techniques is provided, but is not satisfied by any known model of physics. An alternate simulation algorithm involving iterative refinement of entire equations of motion is presented, with an example implementation to solve elastic collisions in hypertime. An artificial intelligence algorithm for …
Application Of Computer Simulation Modeling To Evaluate Business Continuity Plans, Jose Francisco Molina Garcia Plaza
Application Of Computer Simulation Modeling To Evaluate Business Continuity Plans, Jose Francisco Molina Garcia Plaza
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Business continuity plans (BCP) help organizations plan for and withstand the occurrence of unexpected events that interrupt the normal operation of business. Managers typically develop several alternate plans to minimize the business impact of unexpected events. The problem for decision makers is that comparative evaluation of BCP is typically done using subjective judgments.
This research uses a case study approach focusing on a single organization and a single business continuity application to propose the use of computer simulation as a tool for managers to identify and evaluate different BCP prior to committing resources. In the context of an insurance firm, …
Space-Time Multiresolution Approach To Atomistic Visualization, Dipesh Bhattarai
Space-Time Multiresolution Approach To Atomistic Visualization, Dipesh Bhattarai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Time-varying three-dimensional positional atomistic data are rich in spatial and temporal information. The problem is to understand them. This work offers multiple approaches that enable such understanding. An interactive atomistic visualization system is developed integrating complex analyses with visualization to present the data on space-time multiresolution basis facilitating the information extraction and generate understanding. This work also shows the usefulness of such an integrated approach. The information obtained from the analyses represents the system at multiple length and time scales. Radial distribution function (RDF) provides a complete average spatial map of the distribution of the atoms in the system which …

All Theses
This thesis describes the design and run time analysis of the system level middle-ware cache for Hecios. Hecios is a high performance cluster I/O simulator. With Hecios, we provide a simulation environment that accurately captures the performance characteristics of all the components in a clusterwide parallel file system. Hecios was specifically modeled after PVFS2. It was designed to be extensible and to easily allow for various component modules to be easily replaced by those that model other system types. Built around the OMNeT++ simulation package, Hecios' inner-cluster communication module is easily adaptable to any TCP/IP based protocol and all standard …
Evaluating Opportunistic Routing Protocols With Large Realistic Contact Traces, Libo Song, David Kotz
Evaluating Opportunistic Routing Protocols With Large Realistic Contact Traces, Libo Song, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Traditional mobile ad hoc network (MANET) routing protocols assume that contemporaneous end-to-end communication paths exist between data senders and receivers. In some mobile ad hoc networks with a sparse node population, an end-to-end communication path may break frequently or may not exist at any time. Many routing protocols have been proposed in the literature to address the problem, but few were evaluated in a realistic “opportunistic” network setting. We use simulation and contact traces (derived from logs in a production network) to evaluate and compare five existing protocols: direct-delivery, epidemic, random, PRoPHET, and Link-State, as well as our own proposed …

A Hybrid Of Plot-Based And Character-Based Interactive Storytelling, Yundong Cai, Chunyan Miao, Ah-Hwee Tan, Zhiqi Shen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Interactive storytelling in the virtual environment attracts a lot of research interests in recent years. Story plot and character are two most important elements of a story. Based on these two elements, currently there are two research directions: plot-based and character-based interactive storytelling. However, plot-based approach lacks the refinement of character behaviors as character-based approach. On the other side, character-based approach does not follow a well organized story plot so that the moral of the story might be distorted. Therefore, there is a need to develop an integrated framework to achieve the balance between conveying story moral and enhancing the …

Tabu Search For Optimization Of Military Supply Distribution, Ben Weber, Brett Bojduj, Jens G. Pohl
Tabu Search For Optimization Of Military Supply Distribution, Ben Weber, Brett Bojduj, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
The dynamic and non-hierarchical nature of the military domain presents a challenge for traditional supply chain optimization. Flow networks and simulation techniques have been applied to the military distribution problem, but are unable to provide time-definite delivery to customers. Recently, optimization approaches have been independently applied towards strategic and operational levels of planning. However, decomposing military distribution into separate problems forces optimization techniques to utilize imprecise data. The size of the military distribution problem has prevented optimization techniques from providing end-to-end planning capabilities. This paper presents a Tabu Search algorithm for simultaneously solving strategic and operational levels of planning. The …

Scheduling is a problem that is not only common computer science, but which also comes up in a variety of real world situations. Whether multi-threading computer processes, scheduling airport traffic, optimizing assembly line production and manufacturing, or ensuring that enough employees are on the floor at a given time, scheduling is important for increasing efficiency, reducing costs, optimizing production, and meeting deadlines. Scheduling has been used throughout history and has increased in efficacy through the years. Modem computerized scheduling techniques are typically much better than human calculations and often produce surprising insights and results which would have been otherwise passed …
A Selective Approach To Bandwidth Overbooking, Feng Huang
A Selective Approach To Bandwidth Overbooking, Feng Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Overbooking is a technique used by network providers to increase bandwidth utilization. If the overbooking factor is chosen appropriately, additional virtual circuits can be admitted without degrading quality of service for existing customers. Most existing implementations use a single factor to accept a linear fraction of traffic requests. High values of this factor may cause the degradation of quality of service whereas low overbooking factors will result in underutilization of bandwidth. Network providers often select overbooking factors based only on aggregate average virtual circuit utilization. This paper proposes a selective overbooking scheme based on trunk size and usage profile. Experiments …
A Labview-Based Virtual Instrument For Engineering Education: A Numerical Fourier Transform Tool, Levent Sevgi̇, Çağatay Uluişik
A Labview-Based Virtual Instrument For Engineering Education: A Numerical Fourier Transform Tool, Levent Sevgi̇, Çağatay Uluişik
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Engineering is based on practice. The minima of this practice should be given during the university education. This has become more and more comprehensive and expensive parallel to high-technology devices developed and presented to societies. Computers, microprocessor-based devices, programmable systems on Chip (PSoC), etc., make engineering education not only very complex but interdisciplinary as well. Building undergraduate labs has become more and more expensive if only physical experimentation and hands-on training are targeted. On the other hand, simple, comparatively much cheaper software may turn a regular personal computer (PC) into a virtual lab. The key question therefore is, to establish …
Scheduling Policies For Disks And Disk Arrays, Chang Liu
Scheduling Policies For Disks And Disk Arrays, Chang Liu
Dissertations
Recent rapid advances of magnetic recording technology have enabled substantial increases in disk capacity. There has been less than 10% improvement annually in the random access time to small data blocks on the disk. Such accesses are very common in OLTP applications, which tend to have stringent response time requirements. Scheduling of disk requests is intended to improve their response time, reduce disk service time, and increase disk access bandwidth with respect to the default FCFS scheduling policy.
Shortest Access Time First policy has been shown to outperform other classical disk scheduling policies in numerous studies. Before verifying this conclusion, …

The goal is to close the loop between the GVSL and P&E SIL over the Internet to provide a realistic driving experience in addition to realistic …
Sensorsimulator: Simulation Framework For Sensor Networks, Cariappa D. Mallanda
Sensorsimulator: Simulation Framework For Sensor Networks, Cariappa D. Mallanda
LSU Master's Theses
Wireless sensor networks have the potential to become significant subsystems of engineering applications. Before relegating important and safety-critical tasks to such subsystems, it is necessary to understand the dynamic behavior of these subsystems in simulation environments. There is an urgent need to develop a simulation platform that is useful to explore both the networking issues and the distributed computing aspects of wireless sensor networks. Current approaches to simulating wireless sensor networks largely focus on the networking issues. These approaches use well-known network simulation tools that are often difficult to extend to explore distributed computing issues. Discrete-event simulation is a trusted …

This subclassing gives a way to the developers an opportunity to analyze and investigate, phenomenological, networking, robustness and scaling issues, to explore arbitrary algorithms for distributed sensors, independent of hardware constraint. The results are compared against the simulation results for ns-2 for routing protocols Directed Diffusion and GEAR. Through the comparison of results for scalability, performance and memory …
Studies Of Disk Arrays Tolerating Two Disk Failures And A Proposal For A Heterogeneous Disk Array, Chunqi Han
Studies Of Disk Arrays Tolerating Two Disk Failures And A Proposal For A Heterogeneous Disk Array, Chunqi Han
Dissertations
There has been an explosion in the amount of generated data in the past decade. Online access to these data is made possible by large disk arrays, especially in the RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) paradigm. According to the RAID level a disk array can tolerate one or more disk failures, so that the storage subsystem can continue operating with disk failure(s). RAID 5 is a single disk failure tolerant array which dedicates the capacity of one disk to parity information. The content on the failed disk can be reconstructed on demand and written onto a spare disk. However, …

A Novel Approach To Information Security Risk Analysis, Bilge Karabacak, Ibrahim Sogukpinar
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
A number of risk analysis methods became obsolete because of the profound changes in information technologies. Revolutionary changes in information technologies have converted many risk analysis methods into inconsistent, long lasting and expensive instruments. Therefore, risk analysis methods should be adaptively modified or redesigned according to the changes in information technologies, so that they meet the information security requirements of the organizations. By taking these requirements into consideration, a survey based approach is proposed for analyzing the risks of information technologies. This new method is named as Risk Analysis Method for Information Security (RAMIS). A case study is conducted to …

Perspectives On The Evolution Of Simulation, Richard E. Nance, Robert G. Sargent
Perspectives On The Evolution Of Simulation, Richard E. Nance, Robert G. Sargent
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
Simulation is introduced in terms of its different forms and uses, but the focus on discrete event modeling for systems analysis is dominant as it has been during the evolution of the technique within operations research and the management sciences. This evolutionary trace of over almost fifty years notes the importance of bidirectional influences with computer science, probability and statistics, and mathematics. No area within the scope of operations research and the management sciences has been affected more by advances in computing technology than simulation. This assertion is affirmed in the review of progress in those technical areas that collectively …
Quantitative Analysis Of Domain Testing Effectiveness., Narendra Koneru
Quantitative Analysis Of Domain Testing Effectiveness., Narendra Koneru
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The criticality of the applications modeled by the real-time software places stringent requirements on software quality before deploying into real use. Though automated test tools can be used to run a large number of tests efficiently, the functionality of any test tool is not complege without providing a means for analyzing the test results to determine potential problem sub-domains and sub-domains that need to be covered, and estimating the reliability of the modeled system.
This thesis outlines a solution strategy and implementation of that strategy for deriving quantitative metrics from domain testing of real-time control software tested via simulation. The …

Visualization And Animation Of A Missile/Target Encounter, Jeffrey T. Bush
Theses and Dissertations
Existing missile/target encounter modeling and simulation systems focus on improving probability of kill models. Little research has been done to visualize these encounters. These systems can be made more useful to the engineers by incorporating current computer graphics technology for visualizing and animating the encounter. Our research has been to develop a graphical simulation package for visualizing both endgame and full fly-out encounters. Endgame visualization includes showing the interaction of a missile, its fuze cone proximity sensors, and its target during the final fraction of a second of the missile/target encounter. Additionally, this system displays dynamic effects such as the …
A Single Chip Low Power Implementation Of An Asynchronous Fft Algorithm For Space Applications, Bruce W. Hunt
A Single Chip Low Power Implementation Of An Asynchronous Fft Algorithm For Space Applications, Bruce W. Hunt
Theses and Dissertations
A fully asynchronous fixed point FFT processor is introduced for low power space applications. The architecture is based on an algorithm developed by Suter and Stevens specifically for a low power implementation. The novelty of this architecture lies in its high localization of components and pipelining with no need to share a global memory. High throughput is attained using large numbers of small, local components working in parallel. A derivation of the algorithm from the discrete Fourier transform is presented followed by a discussion of circuit design parameters specifically, those relevant to space applications. The generic architecture is explained with …

We discuss the role of Java and Web technologies for general simulation. We classify the classes of concurrency typical in problems and analyze separately the role of Java in user interfaces, coarse grain software integration, and detailed computational kernels. We conclude that Java could become a major language for computational science, as it potentially offers good performance, excellent user interfaces, and the advantages of object-oriented structure.
Simulations Between Programs As Cellular Automata, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, Polar Humenn
Simulations Between Programs As Cellular Automata, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, Polar Humenn
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
We present cellular automata on appropriate digraphs and show that any covered normal logic program is a cellular automaton. Seeing programs as cellular automata shifts attention from classes of Herbrand models to orbits of Herbrand interpretations. Orbits capture both the declarative, model-theoretic meaning of programs as well as their inferential behavior. Logically and intentionally different programs can produce orbits that simulate each other. Simple examples of such behavior are compellingly exhibited with space-time diagrams of the programs as cellular automata. Construing a program as a cellular automaton leads to a general method for simulating any covered program with a Horn …

Effects Of Technology Mapping On Fault Detection Coverage In Reprogrammable Fpgas, Kevin A. Kwiat, Warren Debany, Salim Hariri
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
Although Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are tested by their manufacturers prior to shipment, they are still susceptible to failures in the field. In this paper, test vectors generated for the emulated (i.e., mission) circuit are fault simulated on two different models: the original view of the circuit, and the design as it is mapped to the FPGA's logic cells. Faults in the cells and in the programming logic are considered. Experiments show that this commonly-used approach fails to detect most of the faults in the FPGA.

Functional Representation And Reasoning About The F/A-18 Aircraft Fuel System, M. Pegah, J. Sticklen, William E. Bond
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Functional reasoning, a subfield of model-based reasoning, is discussed. This approach uses abstractions of a device's purpose to index behaviors that achieve that purpose. Functional modeling, a variation on this method, also uses simulation as a core reasoning strategy. The complex causal knowledge of a device along functional lines is decomposed, then a causal story of how the device will operate in a particular situation given stated boundary conditions is composed. The application of the functional approach to modeling the fuel system of a F/A-18 aircraft is described. The representation of the F/A-18 fuel system includes 89 component devices, 92 …

Real-Tv : Rtp/L3'S Visual Monitor, Richard Czop
Theses
Today many real-world activities are being monitored and controlled by some type of micro-processor based system. Emphasis is placed on manufacturing and controlling through the use of computers. The inherent nature of these real-world applications makes them difficult to control and monitor. They must be built meeting strict timing constraints and must be predictable. We need to develop simplistic, reliable, and cost effective methods for building, evaluating, monitoring and controlling these complex systems. These tools should provide the user with system insight. At the New Jersey Institute of Technology Real-Time Computing Laboratory, we are building a system that will provide …

Design of high performance hardware and software based gate-switch level logic simulators requires knowledge about the logic simulation process itself. Unfortunately, little data is publically available concerning key aspects of this process. An example of this is the lack of published empirical measurements relating to the time distribution of events generated by such simulators. This paper presents a gate-switch level logic simulator lsim which is oriented towards the collection of data about the simulation process. The basic components of lsim are reviewed, and its relevant data gathering facilities are discussed. An example is presented which illustrates the use of lsim …
