A Machine Learning System For Glaucoma Detection Using Inexpensive Machine Learning, Jon Kilgannon

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This thesis presents a neural network system which segments images of the retina to calculate the cup-to-disc ratio, one of the diagnostic indicators of the presence or continuing development of glaucoma, a disease of the eye which causes blindness. The neural network is designed to run on commodity hardware and to be run with minimal skill required from the user by packaging the software required to run the network into a Singularity image. The RIGA dataset used to train the network provides images of the retina which have been annotated with the location of the optic cup and disc by …

A Deep Learning Approach To Mapping Irrigation: U-Net Irrmapper, Thomas Henry Colligan Iv Jan 2020

A Deep Learning Approach To Mapping Irrigation: U-Net Irrmapper, Thomas Henry Colligan Iv

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Accurate maps of irrigation are essential for understanding and managing water resources in light of a warming climate. We present a new method for mapping irrigation and apply it to the state of Montana over the years 2000-2019. The method is based on an ensemble of convolutional neural networks that only rely on raw Landsat surface reflectance data. The ensemble of networks method learns to mask clouds and ignore Landsat 7 scan-line failures without supervision, reducing the need for preprocessing data or feature engineering. Unlike other approaches to mapping irrigation, the method doesn't use other mapping products like the Cropland …

Machine Learning? In My Election? It's More Likely Than You Think: Voting Rules Via Neural Networks, Daniel Firebanks-Quevedo Jan 2020

Machine Learning? In My Election? It's More Likely Than You Think: Voting Rules Via Neural Networks, Daniel Firebanks-Quevedo

Honors Papers

Impossibility theorems in social choice have represented a barrier in the creation of universal, non-dictatorial, and non-manipulable voting rules, highlighting a key trade-off between social welfare and strategy-proofness. However, a social planner may be concerned with only a particular preference distribution and wonder whether it is possible to better optimize this trade-off. To address this problem, we propose an end-to-end, machine learning-based framework that creates voting rules according to a social planner's constraints, for any type of preference distribution. After experimenting with rank-based social choice rules, we find that automatically-designed rules are less susceptible to manipulation than most existing rules, …

Image Features For Tuberculosis Classification In Digital Chest Radiographs, Brian Hooper

All Master's Theses

Tuberculosis (TB) is a respiratory disease which affects millions of people each year, accounting for the tenth leading cause of death worldwide, and is especially prevalent in underdeveloped regions where access to adequate medical care may be limited. Analysis of digital chest radiographs (CXRs) is a common and inexpensive method for the diagnosis of TB; however, a trained radiologist is required to interpret the results, and is subject to human error. Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) systems are a promising machine-learning based solution to automate the diagnosis of TB from CXR images. As the dimensionality of a high-resolution CXR image is very …

Domain Adaptation In Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Landing Using Reinforcement Learning, Pedro Lucas Franca Albuquerque

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Landing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on a moving platform is a challenging task that often requires exact models of the UAV dynamics, platform characteristics, and environmental conditions. In this thesis, we present and investigate three different machine learning approaches with varying levels of domain knowledge: dynamics randomization, universal policy with system identification, and reinforcement learning with no parameter variation. We first train the policies in simulation, then perform experiments both in simulation, making variations of the system dynamics with wind and friction coefficient, then perform experiments in a real robot system with wind variation. We initially expected that providing …

Autofocus: Interpreting Attention-Based Neural Networks By Code Perturbation, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui, Yijun Yu, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite being adopted in software engineering tasks, deep neural networks are treated mostly as a black box due to the difficulty in interpreting how the networks infer the outputs from the inputs. To address this problem, we propose AutoFocus, an automated approach for rating and visualizing the importance of input elements based on their effects on the outputs of the networks. The approach is built on our hypotheses that (1) attention mechanisms incorporated into neural networks can generate discriminative scores for various input elements and (2) the discriminative scores reflect the effects of input elements on the outputs of the …

Detecting Toxicity Triggers In Online Discussions, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Haewoon Kwak Sep 2019

Detecting Toxicity Triggers In Online Discussions, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Haewoon Kwak

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite the considerable interest in the detection of toxic comments, there has been little research investigating the causes -- i.e., triggers -- of toxicity. In this work, we first propose a formal definition of triggers of toxicity in online communities. We proceed to build an LSTM neural network model using textual features of comments, and then, based on a comprehensive review of previous literature, we incorporate topical and sentiment shift in interactions as features. Our model achieves an average accuracy of 82.5% of detecting toxicity triggers from diverse Reddit communities.

Rotation Invariant Convolutions For 3d Point Clouds Deep Learning, Zhiyuan Zhang, Binh-Son Hua, David W. Rosen, Sai-Kit Yeung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent progresses in 3D deep learning has shown that it is possible to design special convolution operators to consume point cloud data. However, a typical drawback is that rotation invariance is often not guaranteed, resulting in networks that generalizes poorly to arbitrary rotations. In this paper, we introduce a novel convolution operator for point clouds that achieves rotation invariance. Our core idea is to use low-level rotation invariant geometric features such as distances and angles to design a convolution operator for point cloud learning. The well-known point ordering problem is also addressed by a binning approach seamlessly built into the …

Robust Lightweight Object Detection, Siddharth Kumar

Master's Projects

Object detection is a very challenging problem in computer vision and has been a prominent subject of research for nearly three decades. There has been a promising in- crease in the accuracy and performance of object detectors ever since deep convolutional networks (CNN) were introduced. CNNs can be trained on large datasets made of high resolution images without flattening them, thereby using the spatial information. Their superior learning ability also makes them ideal for image classification and object de- tection tasks. Unfortunately, this power comes at the big cost of compute and memory. For instance, the Faster R-CNN detector required …

Depressiongnn: Depression Prediction Using Graph Neural Network On Smartphone And Wearable Sensors, Param Bidja May 2019

Depressiongnn: Depression Prediction Using Graph Neural Network On Smartphone And Wearable Sensors, Param Bidja

Honors Scholar Theses

Depression prediction is a complicated classification problem because depression diagnosis involves many different social, physical, and mental signals. Traditional classification algorithms can only reach an accuracy of no more than 70% given the complexities of depression. However, a novel approach using Graph Neural Networks (GNN) can be used to reach over 80% accuracy, if a graph can represent the depression data set to capture differentiating features. Building such a graph requires 1) the definition of node features, which must be highly correlated with depression, and 2) the definition for edge metrics, which must also be highly correlated with depression. In …

Evasive Maneuvers Against Missiles For Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle In Autonomous Air Combat, Xizhong Yang, Jianliang Ai

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: For UCAV having the capability to deal with autonomous air combat, the flight dynamics model with the overload input and the 3-dimensional proportional navigation guidance model were established. Based on artificial neural network, an evasive maneuver decision was presented for avoiding incoming missiles. The degrees of freedom for UCAV-missile system were reduced by coordinate transformation, which simplified the complicated model as a non-linear model with relatively small amount of input and a single output. After the neural network samples were generated and trained, evasive results could be directly predicted from the relationship of positions between UCAV and missile …
