[First paragraph] Concerns about the replicability, robustness and reproducibility of findings in scientific literature have gained widespread attention over the last decade in the social sciences and beyond. This attention has been catalyzed by and has likewise motivated a number of large-scale replication projects which have reported successful replication rates between 36% and 78%. Given the challenges and resources required to run high-powered replication studies, researchers have sought other approaches to assess confidence in published claims. Initial evidence has supported the promise of prediction markets in this context. However, they require the coordinated, sustained effort of collections of human experts …

Temporal Bagging: A New Method For Time-Based Ensemble Learning, Göksu Tüysüzoğlu, Derya Bi̇rant, Volkan Kiranoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

One of the main problems associated with the bagging technique in ensemble learning is its random sample selection in which all samples are treated with the same chance of being selected. However, in time-varying dynamic systems, the samples in the training set have not equal importance, where the recent samples contain more useful and accurate information than the former ones. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a new time-based ensemble learning method, called temporal bagging (T-Bagging). The significant advantage of our method is that it assigns larger weights to more recent samples with respect to older ones, so it …

Long Term Predictive Modeling On Big Spatio-Temporal Data, Yong Zhuang Dec 2021

Long Term Predictive Modeling On Big Spatio-Temporal Data, Yong Zhuang

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

In the era of massive data, one of the most promising research fields involves the analysis of large-scale Spatio-temporal databases to discover exciting and previously unknown but potentially useful patterns from data collected over time and space. A modeling process in this domain must take temporal and spatial correlations into account, but with the dimensionality of the time and space measurements increasing, the number of elements potentially contributing to a target sharply grows, making the target's long-term behavior highly complex, chaotic, highly dynamic, and hard to predict. Therefore, two different considerations are taken into account in this work: one is …

Statistical Potentials For Rna-Protein Interactions Optimized By Cma-Es, Takayuki Kimura, Nobuaki Yasuo, Masakazu Sekijima, Brooke Lustig

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Characterizing RNA-protein interactions remains an important endeavor, complicated by the difficulty in obtaining the relevant structures. Evaluating model structures via statistical potentials is in principle straight-forward and effective. However, given the relatively small size of the existing learning set of RNA-protein complexes optimization of such potentials continues to be problematic. Notably, interaction-based statistical potentials have problems in addressing large RNA-protein complexes. In this study, we adopted a novel strategy with covariance matrix adaptation (CMA-ES) to calculate statistical potentials, successfully identifying native docking poses.
