Engineering A Scalable Deep K-Means Algorithm On Spark And Tensorflow, Skyler Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

Due to modern data collection practices, datasets can be both high dimensional and very large in size. With the production of these large, high dimensional datasets comes the task of analyzing them. Deep neural networks are often applied to high dimensional datasets in a supervised manner where a network is trained using labeled datasets and then applied to other, similar datasets. However, labeled datasets are often expensive to produce and are not always available for training purposes in all scenarios. For unlabeled datasets, unsupervised learning using data clustering is often the learning method of choice. Deep clustering is a relatively …

Gamesmanship In Modern Discovery Tech, Neel Guha, Peter Henderson, Diego A. Zambrano

Faculty Scholarship

This chapter explores the potential for gamesmanship in technology-assisted discovery. Attorneys have long embraced gamesmanship strategies in analog discovery, producing reams of irrelevant documents, delaying depositions, or interpreting requests in a hyper-technical manner. The new question, however, is whether machine learning technologies can transform gaming strategies. By now it is well known that technologies have reinvented the practice of civil litigation and, specifically, the extensive search for relevant documents in complex cases. Many sophisticated litigants use machine learning algorithms – under the umbrella of “Technology Assisted Review” (TAR) – to simplify the identification and production of relevant documents in discovery. …

A Bidirectional Deep Lstm Machine Learning Method For Flight Delay Modelling And Analysis, Desmond B. Bisandu, Irene Moulitsas

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Flight delays can be prevented by providing a reference point from an accurate prediction model because predicting flight delays is a problem with a specific space. Only a few algorithms consider predicted classes' mutual correlation during flight delay classification or prediction modelling tasks. None of these existing methods works for all scenarios. Therefore, the need to investigate the performance of more models in solving the problem of flight delay is vast and rapidly increasing. This paper presents the development and evaluation of LSTM and BiLSTM models by comparing them for a flight delay prediction. The LSTM does the feature extraction …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Due to significant advancements in experimental and computational techniques, materials data are abundant. To facilitate data-driven research, it calls for a system for managing and sharing data and supporting a set of tools for effective data analysis and modeling. Generally, a given material property M can be considered as a multivariate data problem. The dimensions of M are the values of the property itself, the conditions (pressure P, temperature T, and multi-component composition X) that control the concerned property, and relevant metadata I (source, date).

Here we present a comprehensive database considering both experimental and computational sources …

Computer Science Student Research

Machine learning algorithms have been successfully applied in proteomics, genomics and transcriptomics. and have helped the biological community to answer complex questions. However, most machine learning methods require lots of data, with every data point having the same vector size. The biological sequence data, such as proteins, are amino acid sequences of variable length, which makes it essential to extract a definite number of features from all the proteins for them to be used as input into machine learning models. There are numerous methods to achieve this, but only several tools let researchers encode their proteins using multiple schemes without …

Data Augmentation For Neutron Spectrum Unfolding With Neural Networks, James Mcgreivy, Juan J. Manfredi, Daniel Siefman

Faculty Publications

Neural networks require a large quantity of training spectra and detector responses in order to learn to solve the inverse problem of neutron spectrum unfolding. In addition, due to the under-determined nature of unfolding, non-physical spectra which would not be encountered in usage should not be included in the training set. While physically realistic training spectra are commonly determined experimentally or generated through Monte Carlo simulation, this can become prohibitively expensive when considering the quantity of spectra needed to effectively train an unfolding network. In this paper, we present three algorithms for the generation of large quantities of realistic and …

Adversarial Training Of Deep Neural Networks, Anabetsy Termini

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Deep neural networks used for image classification are highly susceptible to adversarial attacks. The de facto method to increase adversarial robustness is to train neural networks with a mixture of adversarial images and unperturbed images. However, this method leads to robust overfitting, where the network primarily learns to recognize one specific type of attack used to generate the images while remaining vulnerable to others after training. In this dissertation, we performed a rigorous study to understand whether combinations of state of the art data augmentation methods with Stochastic Weight Averaging improve adversarial robustness and diminish adversarial overfitting across a wide …

Learning From Hierarchical And Noisy Labels, Wenting Qi Jan 2023

Learning From Hierarchical And Noisy Labels, Wenting Qi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

One branch of machine learning algorithms is supervised learning, where the label is crucial for the learning model. Numerous algorithms have been proposed for supervised learning with different classification tasks. However, fewer works question the quality of the training labels. Training a learning model with noisy labels leads to decreased or untruthful performance. On the other hand, hierarchical multi-label classification (HMC) is one of the most challenging problems in machine learning because the classes in HMC tasks are hierarchically structured, and data instances are associated with multiple labels residing in a path of the hierarchy. Treating hierarchical tasks as flat …

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

We introduce a novel approach for learning behaviors using human-provided feedback that is subject to systematic bias. Our method, known as BASIL, models the feedback signal as a combination of a heuristic evaluation of an action's utility and a probabilistically-drawn bias value, characterized by unknown parameters. We present both the general framework for our technique and specific algorithms for biases drawn from a normal distribution. We evaluate our approach across various environments and tasks, comparing it to interactive and non-interactive machine learning methods, including deep learning techniques, using human trainers and a synthetic oracle with feedback distorted to varying degrees. …
