The Application Of Novel Machine Learning Algorithms To Study Multi-Dimensional Fragmentation Functions Of Hadrons In Jets At Star, Hannah A. Harrison-Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Hadronization, the process by which colored quarks and gluons shower from high energy collisions and recombine to form stable, experimentally-observable particles, is a fundamental aspect of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) that is not yet fully understood. Fragmentation functions, typically measured in electron-positron collisions, encapsulate this hadronization process well for quarks. Studying proton-proton collisions offers direct access to gluon fragmentation that other channels like electron-positron do not. Recent theoretical developments have proposed the study of hadronic showers in groupings called jets, introducing the concept of multi-dimensional jet fragmentation functions. This thesis presents the extraction of collinear and transverse momentum-dependent fragmentation functions for …

After a person is arrested and charged with a crime, they may be released on bail and required to participate in a community supervision program while awaiting trial. These ‘pretrial programs’ are common throughout the United States, but very little research has demonstrated their effectiveness. Researchers have emphasized the need for more rigorous program evaluation methods, which we introduce in this article. We describe a program evaluation pipeline that uses recent interpretable machine learning techniques for observational causal inference, and demonstrate these techniques in a study of a pre-trial program in Durham, North Carolina. Our findings show no evidence that …

Phenotyping Cotton Compactness Using Machine Learning And Uas Multispectral Imagery, Joshua Carl Waldbieser

Theses and Dissertations

Breeding compact cotton plants is desirable for many reasons, but current research for this is restricted by manual data collection. Using unmanned aircraft system imagery shows potential for high-throughput automation of this process. Using multispectral orthomosaics and ground truth measurements, I developed supervised models with a wide range of hyperparameters to predict three compactness traits. Extreme gradient boosting using a feature matrix as input was able to predict the height-related metric with R2=0.829 and RMSE=0.331. The breadth metrics require higher-detailed data and more complex models to predict accurately.

Fabrication with composite laminates and additive manufacturing, specifically fused filament fabrication (fused deposition modeling), requires material to be placed layer-by-layer. If adjacent plies/layers lose adhesion during fabrication or operational usage, the strength …

Duties For Datasets, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh Dec 2023

Duties For Datasets, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Machine learning (ML) systems are increasingly being deployed in contexts, such as law, medicine and finance, where system errors present serious and foreseeable risks. As ML system behaviour is largely determined by their training inputs, should dataset providers owe duties of care to victims? Using the ImageNet dataset and the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) models as case studies, this chapter argues that the conventional approach of centralising duties on system providers alone yields insufficient safeguards. Dataset-specific duties should also be considered to incentivise precaution in the preparation of crucial ML input. The chapter analyses how dataset duties may be encompassed …
