In this dissertation, we studied several applications of artificial intelligence applications to healthcare. In the first chapter, we examined a machine learning algorithm for classifying patients presenting to the emergency department with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Patients presenting with this life-threatening condition require a quick and accurate assessment of whether the condition is infectious or cardiac in etiology as the treatments for these etiologies of ARDS differ significantly. We used a transfer learning approach to develop our model. The model used a combination of clinical data and a chest x-ray as its input and achieved an accuracy 0.675 on …

In the US, over 38,000 people die in road crashes each year, and 2.35 million are injured or disabled, according to the statistics report from the Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT) in 2020. In addition, traffic congestion keeping Americans stuck on the road wastes millions of hours and billions of dollars each year. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is a laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) based additive manufacturing (AM) method, which uses a laser beam to melt the selected areas of the metal powder bed. The wide availability of cheap consumer cameras has democratized photography for novices and experts alike, with more than a trillion photographs taken each year. While many of these cameras---especially those on mobile phones---have inexpensive optics and make imperfect measurements, the use of modern computational techniques can allow the recovery of high-quality photographs as well as of scene attributes.

Human pose estimation has been applied to dance and computer vision, but many existing applications focus on a single individual or multiple individuals performing. However, state-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs) require vast amounts of computational power, data, and energyâ??resources that are limited on edge devices. This limitation has brought the need to design domain-specific architectures (DSAs) that implement DL-specific hardware optimizations. Complete understanding of pedestrian motion is essential for autonomous agents and social robots to make realistic and safe decisions. Current trajectory prediction methods rely on incorporating historic motion, scene features and social interaction to model pedestrian behaviors. Tuning the complexity of one's writing is essential to presenting ideas in a logical, intuitive manner to audiences. This paper describes a system submitted by team BigGreen to LCP 2021 for predicting the lexical complexity of English words in a given context. We assemble a feature engineering-based model and a deep neural network model with an underlying Transformer architecture based on BERT. While BERT itself performs competitively, our feature engineering-based model helps in extreme cases, eg. separating instances of easy and neutral difficulty. This thesis describes our approach towards the fine-grained detection of hate speech using deep learning. We leverage the transformer encoder architecture to propose BERToxic, a system that fine-tunes a pre-trained BERT model to locate toxic text spans in a given text and utilizes additional post-processing steps to refine the prediction boundaries. The post-processing steps involve (1) labeling character offsets between consecutive toxic tokens as toxic and (2) assigning a toxic label to words that have at least one token labeled as toxic.
