Computational Models To Detect Radiation In Urban Environments: An Application Of Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks To Radiation Data Analysis, Jose Nicolas Gachancipa
Computational Models To Detect Radiation In Urban Environments: An Application Of Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks To Radiation Data Analysis, Jose Nicolas Gachancipa
Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal
Radioactive sources, such as uranium-235, are nuclides that emit ionizing radiation, and which can be used to build nuclear weapons. In public areas, the presence of a radioactive nuclide can present a risk to the population, and therefore, it is imperative that threats are identified by radiological search and response teams in a timely and effective manner. In urban environments, such as densely populated cities, radioactive sources may be more difficult to detect, since background radiation produced by surrounding objects and structures (e.g., buildings, cars) can hinder the effective detection of unnatural radioactive material. This article presents a computational model …

BACKGROUND: Model card reports aim to provide informative and transparent description of machine learning models to stakeholders. This report document is of interest to the National Institutes of Health's Bridge2AI initiative to address the FAIR challenges with artificial intelligence-based machine learning models for biomedical research. We present our early undertaking in developing an ontology for capturing the conceptual-level information embedded in model card reports.
RESULTS: Sourcing from existing ontologies and developing the core framework, we generated the Model Card Report Ontology. Our development efforts yielded an OWL2-based artifact that represents and formalizes model card report information. The current release of …
An Empirical Study Towards An Automatic Phishing Attack Detection Using Ensemble Stacking Model, Mahmoud Othman, Hesham Hassan
An Empirical Study Towards An Automatic Phishing Attack Detection Using Ensemble Stacking Model, Mahmoud Othman, Hesham Hassan
Future Computing and Informatics Journal
Phishing attacks have become one of the most attacks facing internet users, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, as most organizations have transferred part or most of their work and communication to become online using well-known tools, like email, Zoom, WebEx, etc. Therefore, cyber phishing attacks have become progressively recent, directly and frankly reflecting the designated website, allowing the attacker to observe everything while the victim is exploring Webpages. Hence, utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has become a necessary approach that could be used to detect such attacks automatically. In this paper, we introduce an empirical analysis for automatic phishing detection …
Artifact Development For The Prediction Of Stress Levels On Higher Education Students Using Machine Learning, Valentina Quiroga, Alejandra Hurtado, José Rojas
Artifact Development For The Prediction Of Stress Levels On Higher Education Students Using Machine Learning, Valentina Quiroga, Alejandra Hurtado, José Rojas
ICT
Stress is an adaptative reaction of an organism, human or not, to the demands of fitting in an environment (Kav Vedhara, 1996). When stress originates in an educational context, it is common to refer to it as a student and their mechanisms to adapt and cope with the academic demand. All humans experience stress during their lifetime, but when this overwhelmed feeling is prolonged can affect human behaviour and the ability to deal with physical and emotional pressure, having, as a result, a different range of problems. It is important for higher-level educations institutions, such as colleges and universities, to …
A Smartphone-Based Non-Invasive Measurement System For Blood Constituents From Photoplethysmography (Ppg) And Fingertip Videos Illuminated With The Near-Infrared Leds, Md Hasanul Aziz
Dissertations (1934 -)
At least two billion people are affected by hemoglobin (Hgb), diabetic-related, and other blood-related diseases. Regular clinical assessments of these problems are conducted by analyzing venipuncture-obtained blood samples in laboratories. A non-invasive, cheap, point-of-care, and accurate test is needed everywhere. We started with Hgb measurement, and after an extensive literature survey, we came up with a non-invasive solution with 10-second Smartphone videos of the index fingertips using custom hardware sets to illuminate the fingers. We tested four lighting conditions with wavelengths in the near-infrared spectrum suggested by the absorption properties of two primary components of blood- oxygenated Hgb and plasma. …

Development Of Software Tools For Efficient And Sustainable Process Development And Improvement, Jake P. Stengel
Theses and Dissertations
Infrastructure is a key component in the well-being of our society that leads to its growth, development, and productive operations. A well-built infrastructure allows the community to be more competitive and promotes economic advancement. In 2021, the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) ranked the American infrastructure as substandard, with an overall grade of C-. The overall ranking suffers when key infrastructure categories are not maintained according to the needs of the population. Therefore, there is a need to consider alternative methods to improve our infrastructure and make it more sustainable to enhance the overall grade. One of the challenges …
Machine Learning With Kay, Lasith Niroshan, James Carswell
Machine Learning With Kay, Lasith Niroshan, James Carswell
Conference Papers
Computational power is very important when training Deep Learning (DL) models with large amounts of data (Wooldridge, 2021). Hence, High-Performance Computing (HPC) can be leveraged to reduce computational cost, and the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) provides significant infrastructure and services for research and development to both academia and industry. A portion of ICHEC's HPC system has been allocated for institutional access, and this paper presents a case study of how to use Kay (Ireland's national supercomputer) in the remote sensing domain. Specifically, this study uses clusters of Kay Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for training DL models to extract …
An Empirical Study On Sampling Approaches For 3d Image Classification Using Deep Learning, Nicholas Michelette
An Empirical Study On Sampling Approaches For 3d Image Classification Using Deep Learning, Nicholas Michelette
Theses and Dissertations
A 3D classification method requires more training data than a 2D image classification method to achieve good performance. These training data usually come in the form of multiple 2D images (e.g., slices in a CT scan) or point clouds (e.g., 3D CAD modeling) for volumetric object representation. The amount of data required to complete this higher dimension problem comes with the cost of requiring more processing time and space. This problem can be mitigated with data size reduction (i.e., sampling). In this thesis, we empirically study and compare the classification performance and deep learning training time of PointNet utilizing uniform …
Towards A Computational Model Of Narrative On Social Media, Anne Bailey
Towards A Computational Model Of Narrative On Social Media, Anne Bailey
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
This thesis describes a variety of approaches to developing a computational model of narrative on social media. Our goal is to use such a narrative model to identify efforts to manipulate public opinion on social media platforms like Twitter. We present a model in which narratives in a collection of tweets are represented as a graph. Elements from each tweet that are relevant to potential narratives are made into nodes in the graph; for this thesis, we populate graph nodes with tweets’ authors, hashtags, named entities (people, locations, organizations, etc.,), and moral foundations (central moral values framing the discussion). Two …
Machine Learning And The Network Analysis Of Ethereum Trading Data, Santosh Sivakumar
Machine Learning And The Network Analysis Of Ethereum Trading Data, Santosh Sivakumar
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Since their conception, cryptocurrencies have captured the public interest, motivating a growing body of research aimed at exploring blockchain-based transactions. This said, little work has been done to draw conclusions from transaction patterns, particularly in the realm of predicting cryptocurrency price movements. Moreover, research in the cryptocurrency sphere largely focuses on Bitcoin, paying little attention to Ethereum, Bitcoin's second-in-line with respect to market capitalization. In this paper, we construct hourly networks for a year of Ethereum transactions, using computed graph metrics as features in a series of machine learning models. We find that regression-based approaches to predicting Ether prices/price deltas …
Comparing Learned Representations Between Unpruned And Pruned Deep Convolutional Neural Networks, Parker Mitchell
Comparing Learned Representations Between Unpruned And Pruned Deep Convolutional Neural Networks, Parker Mitchell
Master's Theses
While deep neural networks have shown impressive performance in computer vision tasks, natural language processing, and other domains, the sizes and inference times of these models can often prevent them from being used on resource-constrained systems. Furthermore, as these networks grow larger in size and complexity, it can become even harder to understand the learned representations of the input data that these networks form through training. These issues of growing network size, increasing complexity and runtime, and ambiguity in the understanding of internal representations serve as guiding points for this work.
In this thesis, we create a neural network that …
Legislative Language For Success, Sanjana Gundala
Legislative Language For Success, Sanjana Gundala
Master's Theses
Legislative committee meetings are an integral part of the lawmaking process for local and state bills. The testimony presented during these meetings is a large factor in the outcome of the proposed bill. This research uses Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning techniques to analyze testimonies from California Legislative committee meetings from 2015-2016 in order to identify what aspects of a testimony makes it successful. A testimony is considered successful if the alignment of the testimony matches the bill outcome (alignment is "For" and the bill passes or alignment is "Against" and the bill fails). The process of finding what …
Symplectically Integrated Symbolic Regression Of Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, Daniel Dipietro
Symplectically Integrated Symbolic Regression Of Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, Daniel Dipietro
Computer Science Senior Theses
Here we present Symplectically Integrated Symbolic Regression (SISR), a novel technique for learning physical governing equations from data. SISR employs a deep symbolic regression approach, using a multi-layer LSTMRNN with mutation to probabilistically sample Hamiltonian symbolic expressions. Using symplectic neural networks, we develop a model-agnostic approach for extracting meaningful physical priors from the data that can be imposed on-the-fly into the RNN output, limiting its search space. Hamiltonians generated by the RNN are optimized and assessed using a fourth-order symplectic integration scheme; prediction performance is used to train the LSTM-RNN to generate increasingly better functions via a risk-seeking policy gradients …
Coded Distributed Function Computation, Pedro J. Soto
Coded Distributed Function Computation, Pedro J. Soto
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A ubiquitous problem in computer science research is the optimization of computation on large data sets. Such computations are usually too large to be performed on one machine and therefore the task needs to be distributed amongst a network of machines. However, a common problem within distributed computing is the mitigation of delays caused by faulty machines. This can be performed by the use of coding theory to optimize the amount of redundancy needed to handle such faults. This problem differs from classical coding theory since it is concerned with the dynamic coded computation on data rather than just statically …
The Behaviors Of Bert Attention Heads In Stereotype Detection, Joseph H. Hajjar
The Behaviors Of Bert Attention Heads In Stereotype Detection, Joseph H. Hajjar
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
We are living in the age of information, where it has become increasingly easy to share ideas, news, and content which are seen by an increasingly large number of people. This increasing scope of the increasing amount of data that is being shared lends itself to the question: how can we determine whether what we are reading promotes a stereotype? Previous work has applied transformer based models in this domain yielding impressive performance, but few studies exist interpreting the nature of attention heads in this task. Our work explores the feature encoding and extraction behaviors of attention heads in transformer …

Dementia Classification Through Textual Analysis With Machine Learning Algorithms, Joseph Hurowitz
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The goal of this work is to build a classifier that can identify whether a patient is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease of the Dementia Type (AD). A corpus of 2751 texts was used from the DementiaBank database, where each conversation is transcribed and marked using the CHAT format. Each text was analyzed by frequency of disfluencies, use of aphasic language, and lexical features. All parsed data was used to train a Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, and Support Vector Machine algorithm. These classification algorithms will be tested on the combination of all features, as well as each set of features individually.

Building An Artificial Intelligence Framework For Hypertension Diagnosis: A Use Case Of The Problem List Curation, Ketemwabi Yves Shamavu
Theses & Dissertations
Hypertension is the world's leading factor in cardiovascular disease. Forty-seven percent or close to one in two Americans aged 18 and older are affected. It predicts approximately a thousand deaths per day. Based on recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three patients with hypertension does not know they are hypertensive. Seventy-five percent of hypertensive patients have uncontrolled hypertension - meaning that they are not treated to target. While there is extensive literature on hypertension diagnosis and management, there is an apparent gap in understanding and acknowledging that a person is hypertensive. Moreover, blood pressure …

The goal of this research was to address three key challenges in additive manufacturing (AM), the need for feedstock material, minimal end-use fabrication from lack of functionality in commercially available materials, and the need for qualification and property prediction in printed structures. The near ultraviolet-light assisted green reduction of graphene oxide through L-ascorbic acid was studied with to address the issue of low part strength in additively manufactured parts by providing a functional filler that can strengthen the polymer matrix. The synthesis of self-healing epoxy vitrimers was done to adapt high strength materials with recyclable properties for compatibility with AM …
A Machine Learning Approach For Reconnaissance Detection To Enhance Network Security, Rachel Bakaletz
A Machine Learning Approach For Reconnaissance Detection To Enhance Network Security, Rachel Bakaletz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Before cyber-crime can happen, attackers must research the targeted organization to collect vital information about the target and pave the way for the subsequent attack phases. This cyber-attack phase is called reconnaissance or enumeration. This malicious phase allows attackers to discover information about a target to be leveraged and used in an exploit. Information such as the version of the operating system and installed applications, open ports can be detected using various tools during the reconnaissance phase. By knowing such information cyber attackers can exploit vulnerabilities that are often unique to a specific version.
In this work, we develop an …
Hybrid Machine And Deep Learning-Based Cyberattack Detection And Classification In Smart Grid Networks, Adedayo Aribisala
Hybrid Machine And Deep Learning-Based Cyberattack Detection And Classification In Smart Grid Networks, Adedayo Aribisala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Power grids have rapidly evolved into Smart grids and are heavily dependent on Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for monitoring and control. However, this evolution increases the susceptibility of the remote (VMs, VPNs) and physical interfaces (sensors, PMUs LAN, WAN, sub-stations power lines, and smart meters) to sophisticated cyberattacks. The continuous supply of power is critical to power generation plants, power grids, industrial grids, and nuclear grids; the halt to global power could have a devastating effect on the economy's critical infrastructures and human life.
Machine Learning and Deep Learning-based cyberattack detection modeling have yielded promising results when …

Supervised Representation Learning For Improving Prediction Performance In Medical Decision Support Applications, Phawis Thammasorn
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Machine learning approaches for prediction play an integral role in modern-day decision supports system. An integral part of the process is extracting interest variables or features to describe the input data. Then, the variables are utilized for training machine-learning algorithms to map from the variables to the target output. After the training, the model is validated with either validation or testing data before making predictions with a new dataset. Despite the straightforward workflow, the process relies heavily on good feature representation of data. Engineering suitable representation eases the subsequent actions and copes with many practical issues that potentially prevent the …

The analysis of application-specific behavior has become an increasingly important technique in cyber forensics and incident response. The ability to determine the precise actions taken by a user can be the difference between a successful analysis and one that fails to meet its goals. The precise actions includes URLs visited, files downloaded, messages sent and received, images viewed, and data accessed. Evidence extraction from application memory at runtime is an effective solution to successfully extract valuable objects allocated by each application, and it is evident that there is a need for more Android forensics analysis tools that support recovering evidence …
Causal Inference In Healthcare: Approaches To Causal Modeling And Reasoning Through Graphical Causal Models, Riddhiman Adib
Causal Inference In Healthcare: Approaches To Causal Modeling And Reasoning Through Graphical Causal Models, Riddhiman Adib
Dissertations (1934 -)
In the era of big data, researchers have access to large healthcare datasets collected over a long period. These datasets hold valuable information, frequently investigated using traditional Machine Learning algorithms or Neural Networks. These algorithms perform great in finding patterns out of datasets (as a predictive machine); however, the models lack extensive interpretability to be used in the healthcare sector (as an explainable machine). Without exploring underlying causal relationships, the algorithms fail to explain their reasoning. Causal Inference, a relatively newer branch of Artificial Intelligence, deals with interpretability and portrays causal relationships in data through graphical models. It explores the …

Deep Learning Based Generative Materials Design, Yong Zhao
Theses and Dissertations
Discovery of novel functional materials is playing an increasingly important role in many key industries such as lithium batteries for electric vehicles and cell phones. However experimental tinkering of existing materials or Density Functional Theory (DFT) based screening of known crystal structures, two of the major current materials design approaches, are both severely constrained by the limited scale (around 250,000 in ICSD database) and diversity of existing materials and the lack of a sufficient number of materials with annotated properties. How to generate a large number of physically feasible, stable, and synthesizable crystal materials and build accurate property prediction models …
Genetic Algorighm Representation Selection Impact On Binary Classification Problems, Stephen V. Maldonado
Genetic Algorighm Representation Selection Impact On Binary Classification Problems, Stephen V. Maldonado
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In this thesis, we explore the impact of problem representation on the ability for the genetic algorithms (GA) to evolve a binary prediction model to predict whether a physical therapist is paid above or below the median amount from Medicare. We explore three different problem representations, the vector GA (VGA), the binary GA (BGA), and the proportional GA (PGA). We find that all three representations can produce models with high accuracy and low loss that are better than Scikit-Learn’s logistic regression model and that all three representations select the same features; however, the PGA representation tends to create lower weights …
