Process Data Analytics Using Deep Learning Techniques, Majid Moradi Aliabadi Jan 2020

Process Data Analytics Using Deep Learning Techniques, Majid Moradi Aliabadi

Wayne State University Theses

In chemical manufacturing plants, numerous types of data are accessible, which could be process operational data (historical or real-time), process design and product quality data, economic and environmental (including process safety, waste emission and health impact) data. Effective knowledge extraction from raw data has always been a very challenging task, especially the data needed for a type of study is huge. Other characteristics of process data such as noise, dynamics, and highly correlated process parameters make this more challenging.

In this study, we introduce an attention-based RNN for multi-step-ahead prediction that can have applications in model predictive control, fault diagnosis, …

Unitary And Symmetric Structure In Deep Neural Networks, Kehelwala Dewage Gayan Maduranga Jan 2020

Unitary And Symmetric Structure In Deep Neural Networks, Kehelwala Dewage Gayan Maduranga

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been successfully used on a wide range of sequential data problems. A well-known difficulty in using RNNs is the vanishing or exploding gradient problem. Recently, there have been several different RNN architectures that try to mitigate this issue by maintaining an orthogonal or unitary recurrent weight matrix. One such architecture is the scaled Cayley orthogonal recurrent neural network (scoRNN), which parameterizes the orthogonal recurrent weight matrix through a scaled Cayley transform. This parametrization contains a diagonal scaling matrix consisting of positive or negative one entries that can not be optimized by gradient descent. Thus the …

Estimating Free-Flow Speed With Lidar And Overhead Imagery, Armin Hadzic Jan 2020

Estimating Free-Flow Speed With Lidar And Overhead Imagery, Armin Hadzic

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Understanding free-flow speed is fundamental to transportation engineering in order to improve traffic flow, control, and planning. The free-flow speed of a road segment is the average speed of automobiles unaffected by traffic congestion or delay. Collecting speed data across a state is both expensive and time consuming. Some approaches have been presented to estimate speed using geometric road features for certain types of roads in limited environments. However, estimating speed at state scale for varying landscapes, environments, and road qualities has been relegated to manual engineering and expensive sensor networks. This thesis proposes an automated approach for estimating free-flow …

Representation Learning With Adversarial Latent Autoencoders, Stanislav Pidhorskyi M.S. Jan 2020

Representation Learning With Adversarial Latent Autoencoders, Stanislav Pidhorskyi M.S.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A large number of deep learning methods applied to computer vision problems require encoder-decoder maps. These methods include, but are not limited to, self-representation learning, generalization, few-shot learning, and novelty detection. Encoder-decoder maps are also useful for photo manipulation, photo editing, superresolution, etc. Encoder-decoder maps are typically learned using autoencoder networks.
Traditionally, autoencoder reciprocity is achieved in the image-space using pixel-wise
similarity loss, which has a widely known flaw of producing non-realistic reconstructions. This flaw is typical for the Variational Autoencoder (VAE) family and is not only limited to pixel-wise similarity losses, but is common to all methods relying upon …

Exploration And Implementation Of Neural Ordinary Differential Equations, Long Huu Nguyen, Andy Malinsky

Capstone Showcase

Neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs) have recently emerged as a novel ap- proach to deep learning, leveraging the knowledge of two previously separate domains, neural networks and differential equations. In this paper, we first examine the back- ground and lay the foundation for traditional artificial neural networks. We then present neural ODEs from a rigorous mathematical perspective, and explore their advantages and trade-offs compared to traditional neural nets.

Catgame: A Tool For Problem Solving In Complex Dynamic Systems Using Game Theoretic Knowledge Distribution In Cultural Algorithms, And Its Application (Catneuro) To The Deep Learning Of Game Controller, Faisal Waris

Wayne State University Dissertations

Cultural Algorithms (CA) are knowledge-intensive, population-based stochastic optimization methods that are modeled after human cultures and are suited to solving problems in complex environments. The CA Belief Space stores knowledge harvested from prior generations and re-distributes it to future generations via a knowledge distribution (KD) mechanism. Each of the population individuals is then guided through the search space via the associated knowledge. Previously, CA implementations have used only competitive KD mechanisms that have performed well for problems embedded in static environments. Relatively recently, CA research has evolved to encompass dynamic problem environments. Given increasing environmental complexity, a natural question arises …

A Machine Learning Approach To Estimate The Annihilation Photon Interactions Inside The Scintillator Of A Pet Scanner, Sai Akhil Bharthavarapu Jan 2020

A Machine Learning Approach To Estimate The Annihilation Photon Interactions Inside The Scintillator Of A Pet Scanner, Sai Akhil Bharthavarapu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biochemical processes are chemical processes that occur in living organisms. They can be studied with nuclear medicine through the help of radioactive tracers. Based on the radioisotope used, the photons that are emitted from the body tissue are either detected by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or by positron emission tomography (PET) scanners. SPECT uses gamma rays as tracer but gives a weaker contrast and spatial resolution compared to a PET scanner which uses positrons as tracer. PET scans show the metabolic changes occurring at the cellular level in an organ or a tissue. This detection is important because diseases …

Attention Mechanism In Deep Neural Networks For Computer Vision Tasks, Haohan Li Jan 2020

Attention Mechanism In Deep Neural Networks For Computer Vision Tasks, Haohan Li

Doctoral Dissertations

“Attention mechanism, which is one of the most important algorithms in the deep Learning community, was initially designed in the natural language processing for enhancing the feature representation of key sentence fragments over the context. In recent years, the attention mechanism has been widely adopted in solving computer vision tasks by guiding deep neural networks (DNNs) to focus on specific image features for better understanding the semantic information of the image. However, the attention mechanism is not only capable of helping DNNs understand semantics, but also useful for the feature fusion, visual cue discovering, and temporal information selection, which are …

Deepdrawing: A Deep Learning Approach To Graph Drawing, Yong Wang, Zhihua Jin, Qianwen Wang, Weiwei Cui, Tengfei Ma, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Node-link diagrams are widely used to facilitate network explorations. However, when using a graph drawing technique to visualize networks, users often need to tune different algorithm-specific parameters iteratively by comparing the corresponding drawing results in order to achieve a desired visual effect. This trial and error process is often tedious and time-consuming, especially for non-expert users. Inspired by the powerful data modelling and prediction capabilities of deep learning techniques, we explore the possibility of applying deep learning techniques to graph drawing. Specifically, we propose using a graph-LSTM-based approach to directly map network structures to graph drawings. Given a set of …

Brexit: Psychometric Profiling The Political Salubrious Through Machine Learning: Predicting Personality Traits Of Boris Johnson Through Twitter Political Text, James Usher, Pierpaolo Dondio

Conference papers

Whilst the CIA have been using psychometric profiling for decades, Cambridge Analytica showed that people's psychological characteristics can be accurately predicted from their digital footprints, such as their Facebook or Twitter accounts. To exploit this form of psychological assessment from digital footprints, we propose machine learning methods for assessing political personality from Twitter. We have extracted the tweet content of Prime Minster Boris Johnson’s Twitter account and built three predictive personality models based on his Twitter political content. We use a Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural network, a Naive Bayes multinomial model and a Support Machine Vector model to predict the OCEAN …

Ordinal Hyperplane Loss, Bob Vanderheyden Dec 2019

Ordinal Hyperplane Loss, Bob Vanderheyden

Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations

This research presents the development of a new framework for analyzing ordered class data, commonly called “ordinal class” data. The focus of the work is the development of classifiers (predictive models) that predict classes from available data. Ratings scales, medical classification scales, socio-economic scales, meaningful groupings of continuous data, facial emotional intensity and facial age estimation are examples of ordinal data for which data scientists may be asked to develop predictive classifiers. It is possible to treat ordinal classification like any other classification problem that has more than two classes. Specifying a model with this strategy does not fully utilize …

Improved Generalisation Bounds For Deep Learning Through L∞ Covering Numbers, Antoine Ledent, Yunwen Lei, Marius Kloft Dec 2019

Improved Generalisation Bounds For Deep Learning Through L∞ Covering Numbers, Antoine Ledent, Yunwen Lei, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Using proof techniques involving L∞ covering numbers, we show generalisation error bounds for deep learning with two main improvements over the state of the art. First, our bounds have no explicit dependence on the number of classes except for logarithmic factors. This holds even when formulating the bounds in terms of the L 2 norm of the weight matrices, while previous bounds exhibit at least a square-root dependence on the number of classes in this case. Second, we adapt the Rademacher analysis of DNNs to incorporate weight sharing—a task of fundamental theoretical importance which was previously attempted only under very …

Insider’S Misuse Detection: From Hidden Markov Model To Deep Learning, Ahmed Saaudi Oct 2019

Insider’S Misuse Detection: From Hidden Markov Model To Deep Learning, Ahmed Saaudi

Theses and Dissertations

Malicious insiders increasingly affect organizations by leaking classified data to unautho- rized entities. Detecting insiders’ misuses in computer systems is a challenging problem. In this dissertation, we propose two approaches to detect such threats: a probabilistic graph- ical model-based approach and a deep learning-based approach. We investigate the logs of computer-based activities to discover patterns of misuse. We model user’s behaviors as sequences of computer-based events.

For our probabilistic graphical model-based approach, we propose an unsupervised model for insider’s misuse detection. That is, we develop Stochastic Gradient Descent method to learn Hidden Markov Models (SGD-HMM) with the goal of analyzing …

Similarity-Based Chained Transfer Learning For Energy Forecasting With Big Data, Yifang Tian, Ljubisa Sehovac, Katarina Grolinger Sep 2019

Similarity-Based Chained Transfer Learning For Energy Forecasting With Big Data, Yifang Tian, Ljubisa Sehovac, Katarina Grolinger

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Smart meter popularity has resulted in the ability to collect big energy data and has created opportunities for large-scale energy forecasting. Machine Learning (ML) techniques commonly used for forecasting, such as neural networks, involve computationally intensive training typically with data from a single building or a single aggregated load to predict future consumption for that same building or aggregated load. With hundreds of thousands of meters, it becomes impractical or even infeasible to individually train a model for each meter. Consequently, this paper proposes Similarity-Based Chained Transfer Learning (SBCTL), an approach for building neural network-based models for many meters by …

Pristine Sentence Translation: A New Approach To A Timeless Problem, Meenu Ahluwalia, Brian Coari, Ben Brock Aug 2019

Pristine Sentence Translation: A New Approach To A Timeless Problem, Meenu Ahluwalia, Brian Coari, Ben Brock

SMU Data Science Review

Abstract.

Pristine Sentence Translation (PST) is a new approach to language translation based upon sentence-level granularity. Traditional translation approaches, including those utilizing advanced machine learning or neural network-based approaches, translate on a word-by-word or phrase-by-phrase basis; thereby, potentially missing the context or meaning of the complete sentence. Instead of these piecewise translations, PST utilizes deep learning and predictive modeling techniques to translate complete sentences from their source language into their target language. With these approaches we were able to translate sentences that closely conveyed the meaning of the original sentences. Our results demonstrated that PST’s method of translating an entire …

Texture-Based Deep Neural Network For Histopathology Cancer Whole Slide Image (Wsi) Classification, Nelson Zange Tsaku

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

Automatic histopathological Whole Slide Image (WSI) analysis for cancer classification has been highlighted along with the advancements in microscopic imaging techniques. However, manual examination and diagnosis with WSIs is time-consuming and tiresome. Recently, deep convolutional neural networks have succeeded in histopathological image analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel cancer texture-based deep neural network (CAT-Net) that learns scalable texture features from histopathological WSIs. The innovation of CAT-Net is twofold: (1) capturing invariant spatial patterns by dilated convolutional layers and (2) Reducing model complexity while improving performance. Moreover, CAT-Net can provide discriminative texture patterns formed on cancerous regions of histopathological …

Deep Anomaly Detection With Deviation Networks, Guansong Pang, Chunhua Shen, Anton Van Den Hengel Aug 2019

Deep Anomaly Detection With Deviation Networks, Guansong Pang, Chunhua Shen, Anton Van Den Hengel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although deep learning has been applied to successfully address many data mining problems, relatively limited work has been done on deep learning for anomaly detection. Existing deep anomaly detection methods, which focus on learning new feature representations to enable downstream anomaly detection methods, perform indirect optimization of anomaly scores, leading to data-inefficient learning and suboptimal anomaly scoring. Also, they are typically designed as unsupervised learning due to the lack of large-scale labeled anomaly data. As a result, they are difficult to leverage prior knowledge (e.g., a few labeled anomalies) when such information is available as in many real-world anomaly detection …

Towards Robust Resnet: A Small Step But A Giant Leap, Jingfeng Zhang, Bo Han, Laura Wynter, Bryan Kian Hsiang Low, Mohan Kankanhalli Aug 2019

Towards Robust Resnet: A Small Step But A Giant Leap, Jingfeng Zhang, Bo Han, Laura Wynter, Bryan Kian Hsiang Low, Mohan Kankanhalli

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a simple yet principled approach to boosting the robustness of the residual network (ResNet) that is motivated by a dynamical systems perspective. Namely, a deep neural network can be interpreted using a partial differential equation, which naturally inspires us to characterize ResNet based on an explicit Euler method. This consequently allows us to exploit the step factor h in the Euler method to control the robustness of ResNet in both its training and generalization. In particular, we prove that a small step factor h can benefit its training and generalization robustness during backpropagation and forward propagation, respectively. …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Production innovations are occurring faster than ever. Manufacturing workers thus need to frequently learn new methods and skills. In fast changing, largely uncertain production systems, manufacturers with the ability to comprehend workers' behavior and assess their operation performance in near real-time will achieve better performance than peers. Action recognition can serve this purpose. Despite that human action recognition has been an active field of study in machine learning, limited work has been done for recognizing worker actions in performing manufacturing tasks that involve complex, intricate operations. Using data captured by one sensor or a single type of sensor to recognize …

Deepsz: A Novel Framework To Compress Deep Neural Networks By Using Error-Bounded Lossy Compression, Sian Jin, Sheng Di, Xin Liang, Jiannan Tian, Dingwen Tao, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Today's deep neural networks (DNNs) are becoming deeper and wider because of increasing demand on the analysis quality and more and more complex applications to resolve. The wide and deep DNNs, however, require large amounts of resources (such as memory, storage, and I/O), significantly restricting their utilization on resource-constrained platforms. Although some DNN simplification methods (such as weight quantization) have been proposed to address this issue, they suffer from either low compression ratios or high compression errors, which may introduce an expensive fine-tuning overhead (i.e., a costly retraining process for the target inference accuracy). In this paper, we propose DeepSZ: …

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence and deep learning have provided researchers in various fields insights into the analysis of multiple datasets. These applications include image analysis, text analysis, and many more. However, the effectiveness of deep learning in some areas, such as biomedical imaging and genomic research, has been overshadowed by the variance in the types and complexity of data. This is in addition to the expensive labeling process and the limited size of datasets in these fields. These challenges require advanced deep learning models capable of learning from a small dataset and also from a small number of labeled …

Multi-Resolution Models For Learning Multilevel Abstract Representation With Application To Information Retrieval, Tolgahan Cakaloglu Jun 2019

Multi-Resolution Models For Learning Multilevel Abstract Representation With Application To Information Retrieval, Tolgahan Cakaloglu

Theses and Dissertations

Deep language models learning a hierarchical representation proved to be a powerful tool for natural language processing, text mining, and information retrieval tasks. However, more specifically, representations that perform well for ad-hoc retrieval must capture semantic meaning at different levels of abstraction or context-scopes. The primary goal of ad-hoc retrieval is to find relevant documents satisfying the information need posted in a natural language query. It requires a good understanding of the query and all the documents in a corpus, which is difficult because the meaning of natural language texts depends on the context, syntax, and semantics. In this dissertation, …

Forecasting Building Energy Consumption With Deep Learning: A Sequence To Sequence Approach, Ljubisa Sehovac, Cornelius Nesen, Katarina Grolinger

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Energy Consumption has been continuously increasing due to the rapid expansion of high-density cities, and growth in the industrial and commercial sectors. To reduce the negative impact on the environment and improve sustainability, it is crucial to efficiently manage energy consumption. Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including widely used smart meters, have created possibilities for energy monitoring as well as for sensor based energy forecasting. Machine learning algorithms commonly used for energy forecasting such as feedforward neural networks are not well-suited for interpreting the time dimensionality of a signal. Consequently, this paper uses Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) to capture time …

Sliced Wasserstein Generative Models, Jiqing Wu, Zhiwu Huang, Dinesh Acharya, Wen Li, Janine Thoma, Danda Pani Paudel, Luc Van Gool Jun 2019

Sliced Wasserstein Generative Models, Jiqing Wu, Zhiwu Huang, Dinesh Acharya, Wen Li, Janine Thoma, Danda Pani Paudel, Luc Van Gool

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In generative modeling, the Wasserstein distance (WD) has emerged as a useful metric to measure the discrepancy between generated and real data distributions. Unfortunately, it is challenging to approximate the WD of high-dimensional distributions. In contrast, the sliced Wasserstein distance (SWD) factorizes high-dimensional distributions into their multiple one-dimensional marginal distributions and is thus easier to approximate. In this paper, we introduce novel approximations of the primal and dual SWD. Instead of using a large number of random projections, as it is done by conventional SWD approximation methods, we propose to approximate SWDs with a small number of parameterized orthogonal projections …
