Complex Interactions Between Multiple Goal Operations In Agent Goal Management, Sravya Kondrakunta

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A significant issue in cognitive systems research is to make an agent formulate and manage its own goals. Some cognitive scientists have implemented several goal operations to support this issue, but no one has implemented more than a couple of goal operations within a single agent. One of the reasons for this limitation is the lack of knowledge about how various goals operations interact with one another. This thesis addresses this knowledge gap by implementing multiple-goal operations, including goal formulation, goal change, goal selection, and designing an algorithm to manage any positive or negative interaction between them. These are integrated …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Link prediction in the domain of scientific collaborative networks refers to exploring and determining whether a connection between two entities in an academic network may emerge in the future. This study aims to analyze the relevance of academic collaborations and identify the factors that drive co-author relationships in a heterogeneous bibliographic network. Using topological, semantic, and graph representation learning techniques, we measure the authors' similarities w.r.t their structural and publication data to identify the reasons that promote co-authorships. Experimental results show that the proposed approach successfully infer the co-author links by identifying authors with similar research interests. Such a system …

Classification is an important branch of machine learning that impacts many areas of modern life. Many classification algorithms (classifiers for short) have been developed. They have highly different levels of sophistication and classification accuracy. Classification problems often have highly different levels of hardness and complexity. Practitioners of classification modeling need better understanding of those algorithms in order to select the optimal algorithm for given classification problems. Researchers of classification need new insight on how given classifiers are weak and how they can be improved by correcting their classification errors. This dissertation introduces new tools and concepts to analyze classifier weakness …

Human-Robot Collaboration Using Commonsense Knowledge In Smart Manufacturing Contexts, Christopher Joseph Conti Jan 2021

Human-Robot Collaboration Using Commonsense Knowledge In Smart Manufacturing Contexts, Christopher Joseph Conti

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Human-robot collaboration (HRC), where humans and robots work together on specific tasks, is a growing part of smart manufacturing that entails artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in manufacturing processes. Robots need to be able to dynamically understand their working environments and human partners both accurately and quickly, as inaccurate or slow predictions can be dangerous to humans and collaborative tasks. To handle challenging environments, robots need to utilize commonsense knowledge (CSK), which is everyday knowledge about fundamental concepts, such as how basic objects interact with each other, what their properties are, and how they are associated. Human beings utilize CSK regularly, …

Reviving Mozart With Intelligence Duplication, Jacob E. Galajda

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Deep learning has been applied to many problems that are too complex to solve through an algorithm. Most of these problems have not required the specific expertise of a certain individual or group; most applied networks learn information that is shared across humans intuitively. Deep learning has encountered very few problems that would require the expertise of a certain individual or group to solve, and there has yet to be a defined class of networks capable of achieving this. Such networks could duplicate the intelligence of a person relative to a specific task, such as their writing style or music …

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Interactive virtual worlds provide an immersive and effective environment for training, education, and entertainment purposes. Virtual characters are an essential part of every interactive narrative. The interaction of rich virtual characters can produce interesting narratives and enhance user experience in virtual environments. I propose models of personality and emotion that are highly domain independent and integrate those models into multi-agent strong-story narrative planning systems. I demonstrate the value of the strong-story properties of the model by generating story conflicts intelligently. My models of emotion and personality enable the narrative generation system to create more opportunities for players to resolve conflicts …

Improving Space Efficiency Of Deep Neural Networks, Aliakbar Panahi Jan 2021

Improving Space Efficiency Of Deep Neural Networks, Aliakbar Panahi

Theses and Dissertations

Language models employ a very large number of trainable parameters. Despite being highly overparameterized, these networks often achieve good out-of-sample test performance on the original task and easily fine-tune to related tasks. Recent observations involving, for example, intrinsic dimension of the objective landscape and the lottery ticket hypothesis, indicate that often training actively involves only a small fraction of the parameter space. Thus, a question remains how large a parameter space needs to be in the first place — the evidence from recent work on model compression, parameter sharing, factorized representations, and knowledge distillation increasingly shows that models can be …

Values Of Trust In Ai In Autonomous Driving Vehicles, Ru Lian Jan 2021

Values Of Trust In Ai In Autonomous Driving Vehicles, Ru Lian

Masters Theses

“Automation with artificial intelligence technology is an emerging field and is widely used in various industries. With the increasing autonomy, learning, and adaptability of intelligent machines such as self-driving cars, it is difficult to regard them as simple tools in human hands. At the same time, a series of problems and challenges such as predictability, interpretability, and causality arise. Trust in self-driving technology will impact the adoption and utilization of autonomous driving technology. A qualitative research methodology, Value-Focused Thinking, is used to identify the values of trust in autonomous driving vehicles and analyze the relationship between these values”--Abstract, page iii.

Modeling an autonomous agent that decides for itself what actions to take to achieve its goals is a central objective of artificial intelligence. There are various approaches used to build autonomous agents including neural networks, state machines, utility functions, learning agents, and cognitive architectures. In this thesis, we focus on cognitive architectures. Our approach uses specific knowledge of the world, the goals they pursue, and the actions being performed. Most agents do what they are told (i.e., achieve the goals given to them by a human), but a genuinely autonomous agent does more. It can formulate its own goal or …

Source Code Comment Classification Artificial Intelligence, Cole Sutyak

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Source code comment classification is an important problem for future machine learning solutions. In particular, supervised machine learning solutions that have largely subjective data labels but are difficult to obtain the labels for. Machine learning problems are problems largely because of a lack of data. In machine learning solutions, it is better to have a large amount of mediocre data than it is to have a small amount of good data. While the mediocre data might not produce the best accuracy, it produces the best results because there is much more to learn from the problem.

In this project, data …

Autonomous agents in a multi-agent system coordinate to achieve their goals. However, in a partially observable world, current multi-agent systems are often less effective in achieving their goals. In much part, this limitation is due to an agent's lack of reasoning about other agents and their mental states. Another factor is the agent's inability to share required knowledge with other agents and the lack of explanations in justifying the reasons behind the goal. This research addresses these problems by presenting a general approach for agent goal management in unexpected situations. In this approach, an agent applies three main concepts: goal …

How Much Can Potential Jurors Tell Us About Liability For Medical Artificial Intelligence?, W. Nicholson Price Ii, Sara Gerke, I. Glenn Cohen

Articles

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering medical practice, whether for risk prediction, diagnosis, or treatment recommendation. But a persistent question keeps arising: What happens when things go wrong? When patients are injured, and AI was involved, who will be liable and how? Liability is likely to influence the behavior of physicians who decide whether to follow AI advice, hospitals that implement AI tools for physician use, and developers who create those tools in the first place. If physicians are shielded from liability (typically medical malpractice liability) when they use AI tools, even if patient injury results, they are more likely …

It is often the case with new technologies that it is very hard to predict their long-term impacts and as a result, although new technology may be beneficial in the short term, it can still cause problems in the longer term. This is what happened with oil by-products in different areas: the use of plastic as a disposable material did not take into account the hundreds of years necessary for its decomposition and its related long-term environmental damage. Data is said to be the new oil. The message to be conveyed is associated with its intrinsic value. But as in …

Attentional Parsing Networks, Marcus Karr Dec 2020

Attentional Parsing Networks, Marcus Karr

Master's Theses

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have dominated the computer vision field since the early 2010s, when deep learning largely replaced previous approaches like hand-crafted feature engineering and hierarchical image parsing. Meanwhile transformer architectures have attained preeminence in natural language processing, and have even begun to supplant CNNs as the state of the art for some computer vision tasks.

This study proposes a novel transformer-based architecture, the attentional parsing network, that reconciles the deep learning and hierarchical image parsing approaches to computer vision. We recast unsupervised image representation as a sequence-to-sequence translation problem where image patches are mapped to successive layers …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The role of human-machine teams in society is increasing, as big data and computing power explode. One popular approach to AI is deep learning, which is useful for classification, feature identification, and predictive modeling. However, deep learning models often suffer from inadequate transparency and poor explainability. One aspect of human systems integration is the design of interfaces that support human decision-making. AI models have multiple types of uncertainty embedded, which may be difficult for users to understand. Humans that use these tools need to understand how much they should trust the AI. This study evaluates one simple approach for communicating …

Many websites remain non-ADA compliant, containing images which lack accompanying textual descriptions. This leaves sight-impaired individuals unable to fully enjoy the rich wonders of the web. To address this inequity, our research aims to create an autonomous system capable of generating semantically accurate descriptions of images. This problem involves two tasks: recognizing an image and linguistically describing it. Our solution uses state-of-the-art deep learning: employing a convolutional neural network that "learns" to understand images and extracts their salient features, and a recurrent neural network that learns to generate structured, coherent sentences. These two networks are merged to create a single …

Machine Learning Applications For Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim Sep 2020

Machine Learning Applications For Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The cost of bringing a drug to market is astounding and the failure rate is intimidating. Drug discovery has been of limited success under the conventional reductionist model of one-drug-one-gene-one-disease paradigm, where a single disease-associated gene is identified and a molecular binder to the specific target is subsequently designed. Under the simplistic paradigm of drug discovery, a drug molecule is assumed to interact only with the intended on-target. However, small molecular drugs often interact with multiple targets, and those off-target interactions are not considered under the conventional paradigm. As a result, drug-induced side effects and adverse reactions are often neglected …

Good traders remove emotion from the decision-making process. Automated trading algorithms have enabled this, allowing one to trade round the clock, and without the constant need to monitor one’s investments. But software has gremlins. Given the vast amounts of money involved in such trades, it was only a matter of time before disputes involving automated trading software came before the courts. The decision in Quoine v B2C2 (“Quoine”) represents the first time an apex court in the Commonwealth has ruled on the applicability of contractual principles to situations involving automated trading software.

Partial Discharge Classification For Xlpe Cable Joints Using K Nearest Neighbors Algorithm, Mohd Salleh Muhammad Shairazi

Student Works (2020-2029)

Due to excellent mechanical and electrical properties, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables are commonly used in the power industry. However, cable joints are the weakest part of XLPE cables and are susceptible to insulation failures. Cable joint insulation breakup can cause large losses for power companies. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the consistency of the insulation for early detection of insulation failure. It is known that there is a link between the partial discharge (PD) and the quality of the insulation. PD analysis is an important tool for assessing the quality of insulation in cable joints. In this study, XLPE …

Artificial Intelligence Towards The Wireless Channel Modeling Communications In 5g, Saud Mobark Aldossari Apr 2020

Artificial Intelligence Towards The Wireless Channel Modeling Communications In 5g, Saud Mobark Aldossari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Channel prediction is a mathematical predicting of the natural propagation of the signal that helps the receiver to approximate the affected signal, which plays an important role in highly mobile or dynamic channels. The standard wireless communication channel modeling can be facilitated by either deterministic or stochastic channel methodologies. The deterministic approach is based on the electromagnetic theories and every single object in that environment has to be known in that propagation space and an example of this method is ray tracing. While the stochastic modeling method is based on measurements that involve statistical distributions of the channel parameters and …
