Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
This study aims to develop and evaluate radiomics-based machine learning (ML) models for predicting meningioma grades using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study utilized the BraTS-MEN dataset's training split, including 698 patients (524 with grade 1 and 174 with grade 2-3 meningiomas). We extracted 4872 radiomic features from T1, T1 with contrast, T2, and FLAIR MRI sequences using PyRadiomics. LASSO regression reduced features to 176. The data was split into training (60%), validation (20%), and test (20%) sets. Five ML algorithms (TabPFN, XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, and Random Forest) were employed to build models differentiating low-grade (grade 1) from high-grade …

Giving instructions for a character to navigate around a scene provides a simple analog for the planning needed in computer programming. While many children’s navigation games exist, most require the child to use a combination of input devices such as keyboard, mouse, and controllers for play. Children under the age of five may struggle to use a mouse, but they can easily construct the plans needed for such a game. This research explores layout and graph connectivity algorithms to connect tactile game pieces for a navigation game. A web camera identifies the position of action cards and numerical modifiers (card: …

The Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) is an NP-optimization problem (NPO) that arises in various fields including transportation and logistics. The CVRP extends from the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), aiming to determine the most efficient plan for a fleet of vehicles to deliver goods to a set of customers, subject to the limited carrying capacity of each vehicle. As the number of possible solutions increases exponentially with the number of customers, finding high-quality solutions remains a significant challenge. Recently, the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), a quantum–classical hybrid algorithm, has exhibited enhanced performance in certain combinatorial optimization problems, such as …

Confronting Algorithms: Conscience Catching In The Criminal Trial And Beyond, Sherman J. Clark
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Using the question of how to treat algorithmic evidence under the Confrontation Clause as an entry point, I argue that the use of AI in ethically salient situations presents a risk. It may cause us to avoid confronting our own responsibility. This matters because facing up to what we do, including what we delegate, can help us grow and thrive. Bearing responsibility can help us nurture vital capacities, including forms of empathy, honesty, and dignity. In the language of ethics, these are eudaimonist virtues—traits and capacities that can help us live well and fully. We should thus find ways of …

Cryogenic electron tomography (cryoET) is a powerful tool in structural biology, enabling detailed 3D imaging of biological specimens at a resolution of nanometers. Despite its potential, cryoET faces challenges such as the missing wedge problem, which limits reconstruction quality due to incomplete data collection angles. Recently, supervised deep learning methods leveraging convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have considerably addressed this issue; however, their pretraining requirements render them susceptible to inaccuracies and artifacts, particularly when representative training data is scarce. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a proof-of-concept unsupervised learning approach using coordinate networks (CNs) that optimizes network weights directly against input …

Asteroidal Sets And Dominating Targets In Graphs, Oleksiy Al-Saadi
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The focus of this PhD thesis is on various distance and domination properties in graphs. In particular, we prove strong results about the interactions between asteroidal sets and dominating targets. Our results add to or extend a plethora of results on these properties within the literature. We define the class of strict dominating pair graphs and show structural and algorithmic properties of this class. Notably, we prove that such graphs have diameter 3, 4, or contain an asteroidal quadruple. Then, we design an algorithm to to efficiently recognize chordal hereditary dominating pair graphs. We provide new results that describe the …

External Support Structures In Fused Deposition Modeling 3d Printing, Adam Mystkowski
Undergraduate Honors Theses
3D Printing, sometimes also referred to as Additive Manufacturing, is a technology that has garnered a lot of attention in the past several years. While the technology has attracted a significant community of hobbyists, the benefits of the technology have also been recognized in manufacturing. While there are many different types of 3D Printing techniques, the most common type is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), mainly due to its relatively low cost compared to other types. However, the technique also present a significant limitation: it tends to struggle with models that have overhanging parts. When a layer is extruded by an …

The class activation map (CAM) represents the neural-network-derived region of interest, which can help clarify the mechanism of the convolutional neural network’s determination of any class of interest. In medical imaging, it can help medical practitioners diagnose diseases like COVID-19 or pneumonia by highlighting the suspicious regions in Computational Tomography (CT) or chest X-ray (CXR) film. Many contemporary deep learning techniques only focus on COVID-19 classification tasks using CXRs, while few attempt to make it explainable with a saliency map. To fill this research gap, we first propose a VGG-16-architecture-based deep learning approach in combination with image enhancement, segmentation-based region …

Shipbuilding drawings, crafted manually before the digital era, are vital for historical reference and technical insight. However, their digital versions, stored as scanned PDFs, often contain significant noise, making them unsuitable for use in modern CAD software like AutoCAD. Traditional denoising techniques struggle with the diverse and intense noise found in these documents, which also does not adhere to standard noise models. In this paper, we propose an innovative generative approach tailored for document enhancement, particularly focusing on shipbuilding drawings. For a small, unpaired dataset of clean and noisy shipbuilding drawing documents, we first learn to generate the noise in …
Persistent Relative Homology For Topological Data Analysis, Christian J. Lentz
Persistent Relative Homology For Topological Data Analysis, Christian J. Lentz
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
A central problem in data-driven scientific inquiry is how to interpret structure in noisy, high-dimensional data. Topological data analysis (TDA) provides a solution via the language of persistent homology, which encodes features of interest as holes within a filtration of the data. The recently presented U-Match Decomposition places the standard persistence computation in a flexible form, allowing for straight-forward extensions of the algorithm to variations of persistent homology. We describe U-Match Decomposition in the context of persistent homology, and extend it to an algorithm for persistent relative homology, providing proofs for the correctness and stability of the presented algorithm.

Inexact Fixed-Point Proximity Algorithm For The ℓ₀ Sparse Regularization Problem, Ronglong Fang, Yuesheng Xu, Mingsong Yan
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
We study inexact fixed-point proximity algorithms for solving a class of sparse regularization problems involving the ℓ₀ norm. Specifically, the ℓ₀ model has an objective function that is the sum of a convex fidelity term and a Moreau envelope of the ℓ₀ norm regularization term. Such an ℓ₀ model is non-convex. Existing exact algorithms for solving the problems require the availability of closed-form formulas for the proximity operator of convex functions involved in the objective function. When such formulas are not available, numerical computation of the proximity operator becomes inevitable. This leads to inexact iteration algorithms. We investigate in this …

Weeds have a detrimental effect on crop yield. However, the prevailing chemical weed control methods cause pollution of the ecosystem and land. Therefore, it has become a trend to reduce dependence on herbicides; realize a sustainable, intelligent weed control method; and protect the land. In order to realize intelligent weeding, efficient and accurate crop and weed recognition is necessary. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely applied for weed and crop recognition due to their high speed and efficiency. In this paper, a multi-path input skip-residual network (SkipResNet) was put forward to upgrade the classification function of weeds and crops. It …

Land image recognition and classification and land environment detection are important research fields in remote sensing applications. Because of the diversity and complexity of different tasks of land environment recognition and classification, it is difficult for researchers to use a single model to achieve the best performance in scene classification of multiple remote sensing land images. Therefore, to determine which model is the best for the current recognition classification tasks, it is often necessary to select and experiment with many different models. However, finding the optimal model is accompanied by an increase in trial-and-error costs and is a waste of …

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies have become essential tools for characterizing cellular landscapes within complex tissues. Large-scale single-cell transcriptomics holds great potential for identifying rare cell types critical to the pathogenesis of diseases and biological processes. Existing methods for identifying rare cell types often rely on one-time clustering using partial or global gene expression. However, these rare cell types may be overlooked during the clustering phase, posing challenges for their accurate identification. In this paper, we propose a Cluster decomposition-based Anomaly Detection method (scCAD), which iteratively decomposes clusters based on the most differential signals in each cluster to effectively separate …
Hiking Trail Generation In Infinite Landscapes, Matthew Jensen
Hiking Trail Generation In Infinite Landscapes, Matthew Jensen
MS in Computer Science Project Reports
This project procedurally generates an infinite wilderness populated with deterministic hiking trails. Our approach recognizes that hiking trails depend on contextual information beyond the location of the path itself. To address this, we implemented a layered procedural system that orchestrates the generation process. This helps ensure the availability of contextual data at each stage. The first layer handles terrain generation, establishing the foundational landscape upon which trails will traverse. Subsequent layers handle point of interest identification and selection, trail network optimization through proximity graphs, and efficient pathfinding across the terrain. A notable feature of our approach is the deterministic nature …

In our daily life, we often face situations where we need to make precise judgments based on initially unknown information, while gathering all the evidence to make informed conclusions can be very costly. In this dissertation, we explore the problem of optimizing the decision-making process under uncertainty, and we focus on problems that can be found in both theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics. The primary goal is to develop approximation algorithms with guaranteed worst-case performance. These algorithms aim to minimize the expected cost of acquiring information necessary for evaluating fundamental functions, such as Boolean and symmetric functions. Furthermore, we …

Algorithmic Bias: Causes And Effects On Marginalized Communities, Katrina M. Baha
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Individuals from marginalized backgrounds face different healthcare outcomes due to algorithmic bias in the technological healthcare industry. Algorithmic biases, which are the biases that arise from the set of steps used to solve or analyze a problem, are evident when people from marginalized communities use healthcare technology. For example, many pulse oximeters, which are the medical devices used to measure oxygen saturation in the blood, are not able to accurately read people who have darker skin tones. Thus, people with darker skin tones are not able to receive proper health care due to their pulse oximetry data being inaccurate. This …
