Wa-Fdnet: A Unified Weight Adaptation Network For Multimodal Image Fusion And Object Detection, Yanyin Guo, Ying Luo, Junwei Li, Zhiyuan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimodal image fusion and object detection are critical tasks in computer vision, particularly in scenarios requiring robust perception under low illumination conditions. Existing approaches that attempt to combine these tasks often rely on cascaded or loosely coupled designs, which can result in suboptimal performance due to gradient conflicts and task imbalance. In this paper, we propose WA-FDNet, a novel Weight Adaptation Fusion Detection Network that unifies multimodal image fusion and object detection into a single end-to-end framework. WA-FDNet adopts a shared encoder–private decoder architecture, enabling efficient feature sharing while preserving task-specific characteristics. The image fusion branch employs a spatial attention-based …

An Exponential Cone Integer Programming And Piece-Wise Linear Approximation Approach For 0-1 Fractional Programming, Hoang Giang Pham, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai Jul 2025

An Exponential Cone Integer Programming And Piece-Wise Linear Approximation Approach For 0-1 Fractional Programming, Hoang Giang Pham, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study a class of binary fractional programs commonly encountered in important application domains such as assortment optimization and facility location. These problems are known to be NP-hard to approximate within any constant factor, and existing solution approaches typically rely on mixed-integer linear programming or second-order cone programming reformulations. These methods often utilize linearization techniques (e.g., big-M or McCormick inequalities), which can result in weak continuous relaxations. In this work, we propose a novel approach based on an exponential cone reformulation combined with piecewise linear approximation. This allows the problem to be solved efficiently using standard cutting-plane or branch-and-cut procedures. …

The B2biers System: A Content-Based Perspective On Maximizing Influence And Subscription In Social Networks, Konstantinos Theocharidis, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The popular problem of Influence Maximization (IM) asks for the k users who can maximize the influence of a fixed post in a social network. In contrast, the problem of Content- Aware Influence Maximization (CAIM) asks for the k features to form a viral tunable post in a social network starting its diffusion from a fixed set of initial adopters. CAIM paves the way for a number of novel problems to be studied that altogether can lead to the development of a system that would be valuable for advertisers who manage social network pages. This holds since features (brands) in …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as a transformative AI paradigm, profoundly influencing broad aspects of daily life. Despite their remarkable performance, LLMs exhibit a fundamental limitation: hallucination—the tendency to produce misleading outputs that appear plausible. This inherent unreliability poses significant risks, particularly in high-stakes domains where trustworthiness is essential. On the other hand, Formal Methods (FMs), which share foundations with symbolic AI, provide mathematically rigorous techniques for modeling, specifying, reasoning, and verifying the correctness of systems. These methods have been widely employed in mission-critical domains such as aerospace, defense, and cybersecurity. However, the broader adoption of FMs remains constrained …

An On-The-Fly Synthesis Framework For Ltl Over Finite Traces, Shengping Xiao, Yongkang Li, Shufang Zhu, Jun Sun, Jianwen Li, Geguang Pu, Moshe Vardi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present an on-the-fly synthesis framework for Linear Temporal Logic over finite traces (LTLf) based on top-down deterministic automata construction. Existing approaches rely on constructing a complete Deterministic Finite Automaton (DFA) corresponding to the LTLf specification, a process with doubly exponential complexity relative to formula size in the worst case. In this case, the synthesis cannot be conducted until the entire DFA is constructed. This inefficiency is the main bottleneck of existing approaches. To address this challenge, we first present a method for converting LTLf into Transition-based DFA (TDFA) by directly leveraging LTLf semantics, incorporating intermediate results as direct components …

Dual-Target Disjointed Cross-Domain Recommendation Mediated Via Latent User Preferences, Dinh Hieu Do, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Users often navigate multiple platforms online, each characterized by its own set of scarce data. Recommender systems face a significant challenge in such fragmented environments. This paper proposes a novel approach to enhance recommendation systems by leveraging connections across distinct yet conceptually similar datasets from multiple platforms. We introduce a unique scenario of dual-target overlapping-free cross-platform recommendation, presenting a bridging mechanism to mutually improve across platforms and learn latent user preferences. Our approach addresses the data sparsity prevalent in each platform and enhances recommendation quality by harnessing redundant, rich, and similar domain data. Experiments validate the effectiveness of our method, …

Hps: Hard Preference Sampling For Human Preference Alignment, Xiandong Zou, Wanyu Lin, Yuchen Li, Pan Zhou Jul 2025

Hps: Hard Preference Sampling For Human Preference Alignment, Xiandong Zou, Wanyu Lin, Yuchen Li, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aligning Large Language Model (LLM) responses with human preferences is vital for building safe and controllable AI systems. While preference optimization methods based on PlackettLuce (PL) and Bradley-Terry (BT) models have shown promise, they face challenges such as poor handling of harmful content, inefficient use of dispreferred responses, and, specifically for PL, high computational costs. To address these issues, we propose Hard Preference Sampling (HPS), a novel framework for robust and efficient human preference alignment. HPS introduces a training loss that prioritizes the most preferred response while rejecting all dispreferred and harmful ones. It emphasizes “hard” dispreferred responses — those …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The increasing demand for secure and efficient data sharing has underscored the importance of developing robust cryptographic schemes. However, many existing endeavors have overlooked the following critical issues: (1) unauthorized access resulting from malicious information leakage by senders; (2) absence of constraints on write and read permissions for participants; (3) and inflexibility of strategies to dynamically designate ciphertexts to multiple recipients. In this paper, we present SCPA, a cross-domain access control scheme imbued with sanitization features and propelled by policy-driven dynamic authorization, tailored for cloud-based data sharing. This scheme not only facilitates access controls, including regulations for no-read and no-write …

Instruct2see: Learning To Remove Any Obstructions Across Distributions, Junhang Li, Yu Guo, Chuhua Xian, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Images are often obstructed by various obstacles due to capture limitations, hindering the observation of objects of interest. Most existing methods address occlusions from specific elements like fences or raindrops, but are constrained by the wide range of real-world obstructions, making comprehensive data collection impractical. To overcome these challenges, we propose Instruct2See, a novel zero-shot framework capable of handling both seen and unseen obstacles. The core idea of our approach is to unify obstruction removal by treating it as a soft-hard mask restoration problem, where any obstruction can be represented using multi-modal prompts, such as visual semantics and textual instructions, …

Action Dubber: Timing Audible Actions Via Inflectional Flow, Wenlong Wan, Weiying Zheng, Tianyi Xiang, Guiqing Li, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce the task of Audible Action Temporal Localization, which aims to identify the spatiotemporal coordinates of audible movements. Unlike conventional tasks such as action recognition and temporal action localization, which broadly analyze video content, our task focuses on the distinct kinematic dynamics of audible actions. It is based on the premise that key actions are driven by inflectional movements; for example, collisions that produce sound often involve abrupt changes in motion. To capture this, we propose T A2Net, a novel architecture that estimates inflectional flow using the second derivative of motion to determine collision timings without relying on audio …

Diversity Optimization For Travelling Salesman Problem Via Deep Reinforcement Learning, Qi Li, Zhiguang Cao, Yining Ma, Yaoxin Wu, Yue-Jiao Gong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing neural methods for the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) mostly aim at finding a single optimal solution. To discover diverse yet high-quality solutions for Multi-Solution TSP (MSTSP), we propose a novel deep reinforcement learning based neural solver, which is primarily featured by an encoder-decoder structured policy. Concretely, on the one hand, a Relativization Filter (RF) is designed to enhance the robustness of the encoder to affine transformations of the instances, so as to potentially improve the quality of the found solutions. On the other hand, a Multi-Attentive Adaptive Active Search (MA3S) is tailored to allow the decoders to strike a …

An Efficient Diffusion-Based Non-Autoregressive Solver For Traveling Salesman Problem, Mingzhao Wang, You Zhou, Zhiguang Cao, Yubin Xiao, Xuan Wu, Wei Pang, Yuan Jiang, Hui Yang, Peng Zhao, Yuanshu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent advances in neural models have shown considerable promise in solving Traveling Salesman Problems (TSPs) without relying on much hand-crafted engineering. However, while non-autoregressive (NAR) approaches benefit from faster inference through parallelism, they typically deliver solutions of inferior quality compared to autoregressive ones. To enhance the solution quality while maintaining fast inference, we propose DEITSP, a diffusion model with efficient iterations tailored for TSP that operates in a NAR manner. Firstly, we introduce a one-step diffusion model that integrates the controlled discrete noise addition process with self-consistency enhancement, enabling optimal solution prediction through simultaneous denoising of multiple solutions. Secondly, we …

Surrogate Learning In Meta-Black-Box Optimization: A Preliminary Study, Zeyuan Ma, Zhiyang Huang, Jiacheng Chen, Zhiguang Cao, Yue-Jiao Gong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent Meta-Black-Box Optimization (MetaBBO) approaches have shown possibility of enhancing the optimization performance through learning meta-level policies to dynamically configure low-level optimizers. However, existing MetaBBO approaches potentially consume massive function evaluations to train their meta-level policies. Inspired by the recent trend of using surrogate models for cost-friendly evaluation of expensive optimization problems, in this paper, we propose a novel MetaBBO framework which combines surrogate learning process and reinforcement learning-aided Differential Evolution algorithm, namely Surr-RLDE, to address the intensive function evaluation in MetaBBO. Surr-RLDE comprises two learning stages: surrogate learning and policy learning. In surrogate learning, we train a Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks …

A Mixed-Curvature Based Pre-Training Paradigm For Multi-Task Vehicle Routing Solver, Suyu Liu, Zhiguang Cao, Shanshan Feng, Yew-Soon Ong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Solving various types of vehicle routing problems (VRPs) using a unified neural solver has garnered significant attentions in recent years. Despite their effectiveness, existing neural multi-task solvers often fail to account for the geometric structures inherent in different tasks, which may result in suboptimal performance. To address this limitation, we propose a curvature-aware pre-training framework. Specifically, we leverage mixed-curvature spaces during the feature fusion stage, encouraging the model to capture the underlying geometric properties of each instance. Through extensive experiments, we evaluate the proposed pre-training strategy on existing neural multi-task solvers across a variety of testing scenarios. The results demonstrate …

Hdifftg: A Lightweight Hybrid Diffusion-Transformer-Gcn Architecture For 3d Human Pose Estimation, Yajie Fu, Chaorui Huang, Junwei Li, Hui Kong, Yibin Tian, Huakang Li, Zhiyuan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose HDiffTG, a novel 3D Human Pose Estimation (3DHPE) method that integrates Transformer, Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), and diffusion model into a unified framework. HDiffTG leverages the strengths of these techniques to significantly improve pose estimation accuracy and robustness while maintaining a lightweight design. The Transformer captures global spatiotemporal dependencies, the GCN models local skeletal structures, and the diffusion model provides step-by-step optimization for fine-tuning, achieving a complementary balance between global and local features. This integration enhances the model’s ability to handle pose estimation under occlusions and in complex scenarios. Furthermore, we introduce lightweight optimizations to the integrated model …

Sparse-To-Dense: A Free Lunch For Lossless Acceleration Of Video Understanding In Llms, Xuan Zhang, Cunxiao Du, Sicheng Yu, Jiawei Wu, Fengzhuo Zhang, Wei Gao, Qian Liu Jul 2025

Sparse-To-Dense: A Free Lunch For Lossless Acceleration Of Video Understanding In Llms, Xuan Zhang, Cunxiao Du, Sicheng Yu, Jiawei Wu, Fengzhuo Zhang, Wei Gao, Qian Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to the auto-regressive nature of current video large language models (Video-LLMs), the inference latency increases as the input sequence length grows, posing challenges for the efficient processing of video sequences that are usually very long. We observe that during decoding, the attention scores of most tokens in Video-LLMs tend to be sparse and concentrated, with only certain tokens requiring comprehensive full attention. Based on this insight, we introduce Sparse-to-Dense (StD), a novel decoding strategy that integrates two distinct modules: one leveraging sparse top-K attention and the other employing dense full attention. These modules collaborate to accelerate Video-LLMs without loss. …

Retrieval Augmented Generation For Dynamic Graph Modeling, Yuxia Wu, Lizi Liao, Yuan Fang Jul 2025

Retrieval Augmented Generation For Dynamic Graph Modeling, Yuxia Wu, Lizi Liao, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modeling dynamic graphs, such as those found in social networks, recommendation systems, and e-commerce platforms, is crucial for capturing evolving relationships and delivering relevant insights over time. Traditional approaches primarily rely on graph neural networks with temporal components or sequence generation models, which often focus narrowly on the historical context of target nodes. This limitation restricts the ability to adapt to new and emerging patterns in dynamic graphs. To address this challenge, we propose a novel framework, Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Dy namic Graph modeling (RAG4DyG ), which enhances dynamic graph predictions by incorporating contextually and temporally relevant examples from broader …

Cradle: Empowering Foundation Agents Towards General Computer Control, Weihao Tan, Et. Al.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite their success in specific scenarios, existing foundation agents still struggle to generalize across various virtual scenarios, mainly due to the dramatically different encapsulations of environments with manually designed observation and action spaces. To handle this issue, we propose the General Computer Control (GCC) setting to restrict foundation agents to interact with software through the most unified and standardized interface, i.e., using screenshots as input and keyboard and mouse actions as output. We introduce Cradle, a modular and flexible LMM-powered framework, as a preliminary attempt towards GCC. Enhanced by six key modules, Information Gathering, Self-Reflection, Task Inference, Skill Curation, Action …

Information Bottleneck‑Guided Mlps For Robust Spatial‑Temporal Forecasting, Min Chen, Guansong Pang, Wenjun Wang, Cheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatial-temporal forecasting (STF) plays a pivotal role in urban planning and computing. Spatial-Temporal Graph Neural Networks (STGNNs) excel at modeling spatial-temporal dynamics, thus being robust against noise perturbations. However, they often suffer from relatively poor computational efficiency. Simplifying the architectures can improve efficiency but also weakens robustness with respect to noise interference. In this study, we investigate the problem: can simple neural networks such as Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) achieve robust spatial-temporal forecasting while remaining efficient? To this end, we first reveal the dual noise effect in spatial-temporal data and propose a theoretically grounded principle termed Robust Spatial-Temporal Information Bottleneck (RSTIB), …

What Are Anomalies In A Network?, Kai Ming Ting, Zhong Zhuang, Guansong Pang, Zongyou Liu, Tianrun Liang, Qiuran Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This article examines a collection of assumptions used in the current literature on node anomaly detection in a network. The examination raises the question: What are anomalies in a network? Our attempt to answer this question has provided some interesting findings and led to some open questions. This is the first article which formally defines anomalies in a network and introduces the concept of self-verifiability of a detector without ground-truths in a network. They enable existing detectors to be categorized into two types along the line whether they are self-verifiable or not. We suggest a method to evaluate self-verifiable detectors …

Code reviews are central for software quality assurance. Ideally, reviewers should explain their feedback to enable authors of code changes to understand the feedback and act accordingly. Different developers might need different explanations in different contexts. Therefore, assisting this process first requires understanding the types of explanations reviewers usually provide. The goal of this article is to study the types of explanations used in code reviews and explore the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs), specifically ChatGPT, in generating these specific types. We extracted 793 code review comments from Gerrit and manually labeled them based on whether they contained a …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Proper naming of methods can make program code easier to understand, and thus enhance software maintainability. Yet, developers may use inconsistent names due to poor communication or a lack of familiarity with conventions within the software development lifecycle. To address this issue, much research effort has been invested into building automatic tools that can check for method name inconsistency and recommend consistent names. However, existing datasets generally do not provide precise details about why a method name was deemed improper and required to be changed. Such information can give useful hints on how to improve the recommendation of adequate method …

Enhancing Project-Specific Code Completion By Inferring Internal Api Information, Le Deng, Xiaoxia Ren, Chao Ni, Ming Liang, David Lo, Zhongxin Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Project-specific code completion, which aims to complete code based on the context of the project, is an important and practical software engineering task. The state-of-the-art approaches employ the retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) paradigm and prompt large language models (LLMs) with information retrieved from the target project for project-specific code completion. In practice, developers always define and use custom functionalities, namely internal APIs, to facilitate the implementation of specific project requirements. Thus, it is essential to consider internal API information for accurate project-specific code completion. However, existing approaches either retrieve similar code snippets, which do not necessarily contain related internal API information, …

Being And Becoming In The Algorithmic Age, Bernard E. Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

To change the world: the prerequisite, most often, is to change our experience of the world, to experience the world differently, to be shaken to our foundations, to have one’s sense of self shattered. That is a process of both being and becoming. In order to turn that process in our favour, in this age of artificial intelligence, it will be crucial to transform data and algorithms into bits of justice.

Aiding Depth Perception In Initial Drone Training: Evidence From Camera-Assisted Distance Estimation, John Murray, Steven Richardson, Keith Joiner, Graham Wild

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) pilots frequently experience difficulties with depth perception, particularly when estimating distances between the drone and environmental obstacles. This study evaluates whether the use of onboard camera imagery can improve exocentric distance estimation accuracy among ab initio drone pilots operating under visual line-of-sight (VLOS) conditions. Two groups of undergraduate students performed distance estimation tasks at 20 and 50 m. One group used direct observation only to estimate the exocentric distance between the drone and an obstacle. The second group, as well as direct observation, had access to a live video feed from the drone’s onboard camera via …
