Over the last decade, network applications have grown exponentially, demanding high-speed interconnects. Unfortunately, chip manufacturers are approaching the upper limits of silicon-based computing with slow improvements in computational performance and energy efficiency. This trend has forced the industry to shift paradigms, moving from monolithic architectures to heterogeneous, domain-specific designs. Moreover, the ever-evolving threats compromise digital services and demand more scalable and flexible solutions to ensure service continuity in production networks. Smart Network Interface Cards (SmartNICs) are a product of this new paradigm, integrating domain-specific engines and general-purpose cores to offload various network infrastructure tasks, including those related to security. Graph Traverse Reference Network For Sign Language Corpus Retrieval In The Wild, Kun Hu, Fengxiang He, Adam Schembri, Zhiyong Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sign languages are the primary languages of the deaf community as well as hearing individuals who are unable to speak, which engage the visual-manual modality to convey meanings. In recent years, there has been an explosive growth of sign language videos available from video streaming and social media service platforms. Given the size of these corpora, sign language users often face significant challenges in effectively acquiring the information they need. Therefore, we propose a novel deep learning architecture, namely Graph Traverse Reference Network (GTRN), allowing visual signing queries to retrieve relevant sign language videos (documents) from a large corpus. GTRN …

In multi-messenger astrophysics, signals of multiple types (e.g., gravitational waves, neutrinos, electromagnetic waves) are combined in an effort to learn more about the observed phenomena of interest. The Advanced Particle-astrophyics Telescope (APT) is a mission concept for a space-borne instrument that detects gammaray bursts (GRBs) omnidirectionally, facilitating multi-messenger observations by identifying and localizing celestial events of interest. Here, we describe the on-instrument computations for APT and its Antarctic Demonstrator (ADAPT) as well as techniques for follow-up observations of transient events.

This study advances the understanding of evolutionary transitions in individuality (ETIs) through a novel artificial life framework, VitaNova, which integrates self-organization and natural selection to simulate the emergence of complex, reproductive groups. By dynamically modeling individual agents within an environment shaped by predators and spatial constraints, VitaNova reveals mechanisms by which simple agents evolve into cohesive units exhibiting collective reproduction. The findings highlight the synergy between self-organized behaviors and adaptive evolutionary strategies as fundamental drivers of ETIs. This approach deepens our understanding of higher-order biological individuality and offers a new empirical pathway for investigating ETIs, extending current theoretical frameworks.

Positive And Negative Parity States Of 226-236th Isotopes, Ali A. Mezban, Falih H. Al-Khudair
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The level scheme of the 226-236Th nuclei is analyzed using the Interacting Boson Model (IBM-1). The ground state band (g. s.-band), beta band (β-band), gamma band (γ-band) have been described in the sd model space. To calculate the negative parity energy levels, the model space is extended to sdf by adding the f-boson (L=3). A sequence of states in energy bands up to 3.5 MeV has been obtained. The decay of negative states below 1 MeV built on an octupole vibration modes is investigated. The transition probabilities in-band and inter-band are calculated using the wave function of the …

Recent advancements in foundation models, such as the Segment Anything Model (SAM), have shown strong performance in various vision tasks, particularly image segmentation, due to their impressive zero-shot segmentation capabilities. However, effectively adapting such models for medical image classification is still a less explored topic. In this paper, we introduce a new framework to adapt SAM for medical image classification. First, we utilize the SAM image encoder as a feature extractor to capture segmentation-based features that convey important spatial and contextual details of the image, while freezing its weights to avoid unnecessary overhead during training. Next, we propose a novel …

Pure And Strong Nash Equilibrium Computation In Compactly Representable Aggregate Games, Jared Soundy, Mohammad T. Irfan, Hau Chan
Research & Publications
Aggregate games model interdependent decision making when an agent’s utility depends on their own choice and the aggregation of everyone's choices. We define a compactly representable subclass of aggregate games we call additive aggregate games, which encompasses popular games like congestion games, anonymous games, Schelling games, etc. We study computational questions on pure Nash equilibrium (PNE) and pure strong Nash equilibrium (SNE). We show that PNE existence is NP-complete for very simple cases of additive aggregate games. We devise an efficient algorithmic scheme for deciding the existence of a PNE and computing one (if it exists) for bounded aggregate space. …

Enhancing Graph Representation Learning Through Self-Supervision: An Augmentation Perspective, Jianyuan Bo
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Graph representation learning has become fundamental in various domains, from social networks to molecular structures, enabling extraction of meaningful patterns from graph-structured data. While deep learning approaches, particularly graph neural networks, have shown promising results, their effectiveness is often limited by the scarcity of labeled data. This challenge is particularly acute in graph domains where annotation requires specialized expertise and is prohibitively expensive. Self-supervised learning has emerged as a promising direction to address this limitation by creating auxiliary tasks from unlabeled data, with augmentation strategies playing a crucial role in their success.
Current graph self-supervised learning methods face several critical …

From Palimpsest To Prompt: Rewriting Shakespeare, Creative Authorship, And The Generative Logics Of Large Language Models In Contemporary Theatre, Michael Harding, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the convergence of creative authorship, adaptation, and generative artificial intelligence within contemporary theatre, taking Michael Harding‘s Awake, Young King as a central case study. Through the rewriting of Shakespearean drama, Harding‘s creative process demonstrates how theatrical meaning emerges through ongoing negotiation among playwright, performer, and audience, with scripts historically subject to revision, improvisation, and reinterpretation. Concerns regarding copyright, intellectual property, and the role of AI in the performing arts are reframed as extensions of enduring debates over originality and authorship, rather than novel threats. Tracing the evolution from The Rise of James VI to Awake, Young King, …

Unambiguous Granularity Distillation For Asymmetric Image Retrieval, Hongrui Zhang, Yi Xie, Haoquan Zhang, Cheng Xu, Xuandi Luo, Donglei Chen, Xuemiao Xu, Huaidong Zhang, Pheng Ann Heng, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Previous asymmetric image retrieval methods based on knowledge distillation have primarily focused on aligning the global features of two networks to transfer global semantic information from the gallery network to the query network. However, these methods often fail to effectively transfer local semantic information, limiting the fine-grained alignment of feature representation spaces between the two networks. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel approach called Layered-Granularity Localized Distillation (GranDist). GranDist constructs layered feature representations that balance the richness of contextual information with the granularity of local features. As we progress through the layers, the contextual information becomes more detailed, …

Robust Relevance Feedback For Interactive Known-Item Video Search, Zhixin Ma, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Known-item search (KIS) involves only a single search target, making relevance feedback-typically a powerful technique for efficiently identifying multiple positive examples to infer user intent-inapplicable. PicHunter addresses this issue by asking users to select the top-k most similar examples to the unique search target from a displayed set. Under ideal conditions, when the user's perception aligns closely with the machine's perception of similarity, consistent and precise judgments can elevate the target to the top position within a few iterations. However, in practical scenarios, expecting users to provide consistent judgments is often unrealistic, especially when the underlying embedding features used for …

Personalized outfit generation aims to construct a set of compatible and personalized fashion items as an outfit. Recently, generative AI models have received widespread attention, as they can generate fashion items for users to complete an incomplete outfit or create a complete outfit. However, they have limitations in terms of lacking diversity and relying on the supervised learning paradigm. Recognizing this gap, we propose a novel framework FashionDPO, which fine-tunes the fashion outfit generation model using direct preference optimization. This framework aims to provide a general fine-tuning approach to fashion generative models, refining a pre-trained fashion outfit generation model using …

Towards Efficient Privacy-Preserving Deep Learning: He-Friendly Structures, Flexible Pruning, He-Efficient Architectures, And Secure Transformer Token Drop, Yifei Cai
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Deep learning (DL) has become a powerful tool for solving complex problems, but developing DL models typically requires vast datasets, high computational resources, and expert knowledge—barriers that limit accessibility. Machine Learning as a Service (MLaaS) addresses this challenge by allowing resource-rich providers to deliver pre-trained DL models as services. However, privacy concerns arise: clients hesitate to share sensitive data, while providers protect their proprietary models. To address this, privacy-preserving MLaaS integrates cryptographic techniques into DL computations, as seen in frameworks like Cryptonets, SecureML, GAZELLE, CrypTFlow2, Cheetah, and BOLT. Among them, Homomorphic Encryption (HE) enables computation on encrypted data but remains …

Network Security is a 10-credit module taught on the part-time Bachelor of Science in Computing in Digital Forensics & Cyber Security course in TU Dublin. While the overall course is mainly delivered online, there are some topics in this particular module which benefit from having a hands-on interactive element. The challenge though with facilitating learners to have that interactive experience is that the ones who cannot travel to campus should not be excluded. The mobile Hyflex project helped address this challenge by giving students both on campus and online a comparable interactive experience. Changes made to practice (100-150 words).

Satellite data plays a vital role in modern global infrastructure by enabling communications, navigation, and weather forecasting. As demand for satellite technology grows, so does the need for highly trained satellite ground operators. Traditional training regimens for satellite operators employ simulation using two-dimensional computer console displays paired with the varied ability of trainees to generate abstract mental imagery of the scenario. However, this development of mental imagery imposes a considerable learning curve and cognitive workload on the trainee, which may negatively impact the user experience and knowledge gained during the training scenario.
