BACKGROUND: There is no specific treatment for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) manifesting as pulseless electric activity (PEA) and survival rates are low; unlike ventricular fibrillation (VF), which is treatable by defibrillation. Development of novel treatments requires fundamental clinical studies, but access to the true initial rhythm has been a limiting factor.

METHODS: Using demographics and detailed clinical variables, we trained and tested an AI model (extreme gradient boosting) to differentiate PEA-SCA versus VF-SCA in a novel setting that provided the true initial rhythm. A subgroup of SCAs are witnessed by emergency medical services personnel, and because the response time is …

Learning From Machines: How Negative Feedback From Machines Improves Learning Between Humans, Tengjian Zou, Gokhan Ertug, Thomas Roulet Feb 2024

Learning From Machines: How Negative Feedback From Machines Improves Learning Between Humans, Tengjian Zou, Gokhan Ertug, Thomas Roulet

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Prior studies on learning from failure primarily focus on how individuals learn from failure feedback given by other individuals. It is unclear whether and how the advent of machine feedback may influence individuals’ learning from failures. We suggest that failure feedback provided by machines facilitates learning in two ways. First, it focuses individuals’ attention on their failures, leading them to learn from these failures. Second, it serves as a catalyzer, motivating individuals to learn more from failure feedback given to them by other individuals as well. In addition, this catalyzing effect is stronger if the failure feedback from machines and …

Pam3s: Progressive Two-Stage Auction-Based Multi-Platform Multi-User Mutual Selection Scheme In Mcs, Bin Luo, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Man Zhang, Ximeng Liu, Yanbing Ren, Xizhao Luo, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) has been applied in various fields to realize data sharing, where multiple platforms and multiple Mobile Users () have appeared recently. However, aiming at mutual selection, the existing works ignore making ' utilities with the limited resources and platforms' utilities while achieving the desired sensing data quality maximum as far as possible. Thus, they cannot motivate both and platforms to participate. To address this problem, standing on both sides of and platforms with conflicting interests, we propose a Progressive two-stage Auction-based Multi-platform Multi-user Mutual Selection scheme (). Specifically, in, we treat mutual selection as a two-stage auction …

Recommendations With Minimum Exposure Guarantees: A Post-Processing Framework, Ramon Lopes, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Rodrygo L. T. Santos, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Relevance-based ranking is a popular ingredient in recommenders, but it frequently struggles to meet fairness criteria because social and cultural norms may favor some item groups over others. For instance, some items might receive lower ratings due to some sort of bias (e.g. gender bias). A fair ranking should balance the exposure of items from advantaged and disadvantaged groups. To this end, we propose a novel post-processing framework to produce fair, exposure-aware recommendations. Our approach is based on an integer linear programming model maximizing the expected utility while satisfying a minimum exposure constraint. The model has fewer variables than previous …

Imitate The Good And Avoid The Bad: An Incremental Approach To Safe Reinforcement Learning, Minh Huy Hoang, Mai Anh Tien, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A popular framework for enforcing safe actions in Reinforcement Learning (RL) is Constrained RL, where trajectory based constraints on expected cost (or other cost measures) are employed to enforce safety and more importantly these constraints are enforced while maximizing expected reward. Most recent approaches for solving Constrained RL convert the trajectory based cost constraint into a surrogate problem that can be solved using minor modifications to RL methods. A key drawback with such approaches is an over or underestimation of the cost constraint at each state. Therefore, we provide an approach that does not modify the trajectory based cost constraint …

When Evolutionary Computation Meets Privacy, Bowen Zhao, Wei-Neng Chen, Xiaoguo Li, Ximeng Liu, Qingqi Pei, Jun Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, evolutionary computation (EC) has experienced significant advancements due to the integration of machine learning, distributed computing, and big data technologies. These developments have led to new research avenues in EC, such as distributed EC and surrogate-assisted EC. While these advancements have greatly enhanced the performance and applicability of EC, they have also raised concerns regarding privacy leakages, specifically the disclosure of optimal results and surrogate models. Consequently, the combination of evolutionary computation and privacy protection becomes an increasing necessity. However, a comprehensive exploration of privacy concerns in evolutionary computation is currently lacking, particularly in terms of identifying the object, …

Dl-Drl: A Double-Level Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach For Large-Scale Task Scheduling Of Multi-Uav, Xiao Mao, Guohua Wu, Mingfeng Fan, Zhiguang Cao, Witold Pedrycz

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Exploiting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to execute tasks is gaining growing popularity recently. To address the underlying task scheduling problem, conventional exact and heuristic algorithms encounter challenges such as rapidly increasing computation time and heavy reliance on domain knowledge, particularly when dealing with large-scale problems. The deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based methods that learn useful patterns from massive data demonstrate notable advantages. However, their decision space will become prohibitively huge as the problem scales up, thus deteriorating the computation efficiency. To alleviate this issue, we propose a double-level deep reinforcement learning (DL-DRL) approach based on a divide and conquer framework …

Leveraging Llms And Generative Models For Interactive Known-Item Video Search, Zhixin Ma, Jiaxin Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While embedding techniques such as CLIP have considerably boosted search performance, user strategies in interactive video search still largely operate on a trial-and-error basis. Users are often required to manually adjust their queries and carefully inspect the search results, which greatly rely on the users’ capability and proficiency. Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) and generative models offer promising avenues for enhancing interactivity in video retrieval and reducing the personal bias in query interpretation, particularly in the known-item search. Specifically, LLMs can expand and diversify the semantics of the queries while avoiding grammar mistakes or the language barrier. In …

Mitigating Fine-Grained Hallucination By Fine-Tuning Large Vision-Language Models With Caption Rewrites, Lei Wang, Jiabang He, Shenshen Li, Ning Liu, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable performance in natural language processing (NLP) tasks. To comprehend and execute diverse human instructions over image data, instruction-tuned large vision-language models (LVLMs) have been introduced. However, LVLMs may suffer from different types of object hallucinations. Nevertheless, LVLMs are evaluated for coarse-grained object hallucinations only (i.e., generated objects non-existent in the input image). The fine-grained object attributes and behaviors non-existent in the image may still be generated but not measured by the current evaluation methods. In this paper, we thus focus on reducing fine-grained hallucinations of LVLMs. We propose ReCaption, a framework that consists …

Detecting Outdated Code Element References In Software Repository Documentation, Wen Siang Tan, Markus Wagner, Christoph Treude Feb 2024

Detecting Outdated Code Element References In Software Repository Documentation, Wen Siang Tan, Markus Wagner, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Outdated documentation is a pervasive problem in software development, preventing effective use of software, and misleading users and developers alike. We posit that one possible reason why documentation becomes out of sync so easily is that developers are unaware of when their source code modifications render the documentation obsolete. Ensuring that the documentation is always in sync with the source code takes considerable effort, especially for large codebases. To address this situation, we propose an approach that can automatically detect code element references that survive in the documentation after all source code instances have been deleted. In this work, we …

Mutation Analysis For Evaluating Code Translation, Giovani Guizzo, Jie M. Zhang, Federica Sarro, Christoph Treude, Mark Harman Feb 2024

Mutation Analysis For Evaluating Code Translation, Giovani Guizzo, Jie M. Zhang, Federica Sarro, Christoph Treude, Mark Harman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Source-to-source code translation automatically translates a program from one programming language to another. The existing research on code translation evaluates the effectiveness of their approaches by using either syntactic similarities (e.g., BLEU score), or test execution results. The former does not consider semantics, the latter considers semantics but falls short on the problem of insufficient data and tests. In this paper, we propose MBTA (Mutation-based Code Translation Analysis), a novel application of mutation analysis for code translation assessment. We also introduce MTS (Mutation-based Translation Score), a measure to compute the level of trustworthiness of a translator. If a mutant of …

Hackles: Simulating And Visually Representing The Anxiety Of Walking Alone, Sydney Pratte, Anthony Tang, Shannon Hoover, Lora Oehlberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we compare the designs of two fashion-tech garments that communicate the anxiety felt when walking alone. While the two garments share a common vision, they are designed to be worn in two radically different settings and to communicate to different audiences: one directly communicates an empathetic experience to its wearer; the other a model wears at a runway show and must share its story to a general audience. We used Research Through Design (RtD) methods to design both fashion-tech garments. Then, we recorded and analyzed the design process for both garments via an annotated portfolio to compare …

From Canteen Food To Daily Meals: Generalizing Food Recognition To More Practical Scenarios, Guoshan Liu, Yang Jiao, Jingjing Chen, Bin Zhu, Yu-Gang Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The precise recognition of food categories plays a pivotal role for intelligent health management, attracting significant research attention in recent years. Prominent benchmarks, such as Food-101 and VIREO Food-172, provide abundant food image resources that catalyze the prosperity of research in this field. Nevertheless, these datasets are well-curated from canteen scenarios and thus deviate from food appearances in daily life. This discrepancy poses great challenges in effectively transferring classifiers trained on these canteen datasets to broader daily-life scenarios encountered by humans. Toward this end, we present two new benchmarks, namely DailyFood-172 and DailyFood-16, specifically designed to curate food images from …

Transition-Informed Reinforcement Learning For Large-Scale Stackelberg Mean-Field Games., Pengdeng Li, Runsheng Yu, Xinrun Wang, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many real-world scenarios including fleet management and Ad auctions can be modeled as Stackelberg mean-field games (SMFGs) where a leader aims to incentivize a large number of homogeneous self-interested followers to maximize her utility. Existing works focus on cases with a small number of heterogeneous followers, e.g., 5-10, and suffer from scalability issue when the number of followers increases. There are three major challenges in solving large-scale SMFGs: i) classical methods based on solving differential equations fail as they require exact dynamics parameters, ii) learning by interacting with environment is data-inefficient, and iii) complex interaction between the leader and followers …

Market-Gan: Adding Control To Financial Market Data Generation With Semantic Context, Haochong Xia, Shuo Sun, Xinrun Wang, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Financial simulators play an important role in enhancing forecasting accuracy, managing risks, and fostering strategic financial decision-making. Despite the development of financial market simulation methodologies, existing frameworks often struggle with adapting to specialized simulation context. We pinpoint the challenges as i) current financial datasets do not contain context labels; ii) current techniques are not designed to generate financial data with context as control, which demands greater precision compared to other modalities; iii) the inherent difficulties in generating context-aligned, high-fidelity data given the non-stationary, noisy nature of financial data. To address these challenges, our contributions are: i) we proposed the Contextual …

Unsupervised Training Sequence Design: Efficient And Generalizable Agent Training, Wenjun Li, Pradeep Varakantham Feb 2024

Unsupervised Training Sequence Design: Efficient And Generalizable Agent Training, Wenjun Li, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To train generalizable Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents, researchers recently proposed the Unsupervised Environment Design (UED) framework, in which a teacher agent creates a very large number of training environments and a student agent trains on the experiences in these environments to be robust against unseen testing scenarios. For example, to train a student to master the “stepping over stumps” task, the teacher will create numerous training environments with varying stump heights and shapes. In this paper, we argue that UED neglects training efficiency and its need for very large number of environments (henceforth referred to as infinite horizon training) makes …

Robust Permissioned Blockchain Consensus For Unstable Communication In Fanet, Zihao Wang, Hang Wang, Zhuowen Li, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Yanbing Ren, Yunwei Wang, Zhe Ren, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The utilization of blockchain technology as a distributed information sharing system has gained widespread adoption across various domains. However, its application to Flying Ad-Hoc Network (FANET), characterized by severe packet loss, poses significant challenges. The high packet loss rates in FANETs can result in decreased consensus success rates and negatively impact information sharing consistency and efficiency. In this paper, we proposed RoUBC, a novel consensus scheme for Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANET), which is based on the Raft protocol and is designed to address the challenges posed by the severe packet loss network in FANET. The proposed scheme consists of two …

Harnessing Holistic Discourse Features And Triadic Interaction For Sentiment Quadruple Extraction In Dialogues, Bobo Li, Hao Fei, Lizi Liao, Et Al Feb 2024

Harnessing Holistic Discourse Features And Triadic Interaction For Sentiment Quadruple Extraction In Dialogues, Bobo Li, Hao Fei, Lizi Liao, Et Al

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Dialogue Aspect-based Sentiment Quadruple (DiaASQ) is a newly-emergent task aiming to extract the sentiment quadruple (i.e., targets, aspects, opinions, and sentiments) from conversations. While showing promising performance, the prior DiaASQ approach unfortunately falls prey to the key crux of DiaASQ, including insufficient modeling of discourse features, and lacking quadruple extraction, which hinders furthertask improvement. To this end, we introduce a novel framework that not only capitalizes on comprehensive discourse feature modeling, but also captures the intrinsic interaction for optimal quadruple extraction. On the one hand, drawing upon multiple discourse features, our approach constructs a token-level heterogeneous graph and enhances token …

Out-Of-Distribution Detection In Long-Tailed Recognition With Calibrated Outlier Class Learning, Wenjun Miao, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Tianqi Li, Jin Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing out-of-distribution (OOD) methods have shown great success on balanced datasets but become ineffective in long-tailed recognition (LTR) scenarios where 1) OOD samples are often wrongly classified into head classes and/or 2) tail-class samples are treated as OOD samples. To address these issues, current studies fit a prior distribution of auxiliary/pseudo OOD data to the long-tailed in-distribution (ID) data. However, it is difficult to obtain such an accurate prior distribution given the unknowingness of real OOD samples and heavy class imbalance in LTR. A straightforward solution to avoid the requirement of this prior is to learn an outlier class to …

Vadclip: Adapting Vision-Language Models For Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection, Peng Wu, Xuerong Zhou, Guansong Pang, Lingru Zhou, Qingsen Yan, Peng Wang, Yanning Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The recent contrastive language-image pre-training (CLIP) model has shown great success in a wide range of image-level tasks, revealing remarkable ability for learning powerful visual representations with rich semantics. An open and worthwhile problem is efficiently adapting such a strong model to the video domain and designing a robust video anomaly detector. In this work, we propose VadCLIP, a new paradigm for weakly supervised video anomaly detection (WSVAD) by leveraging the frozen CLIP model directly without any pre-training and fine-tuning process. Unlike current works that directly feed extracted features into the weakly supervised classifier for frame-level binary classification, VadCLIP makes …
