Achieving Efficient And Privacy-Preserving Neural Network Training And Prediction In Cloud Environments, Chuan Zhang, Chenfei Hu, Tong Wu, Liehuang Zhu, Ximeng Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The neural network has been widely used to train predictive models for applications such as image processing, disease prediction, and face recognition. To produce more accurate models, powerful third parties (e.g., clouds) are usually employed to collect data from a large number of users, which however may raise concerns about user privacy. In this paper, we propose an Efficient and Privacy-preserving Neural Network scheme, named EPNN, to deal with the privacy issues in cloud-based neural networks. EPNN is designed based on a two-cloud model and techniques of data perturbation and additively homomorphic cryptosystem. This scheme enables two clouds to cooperatively …

Using The Typescript Compiler To Fix Erroneous Node.Js Snippets, Brittany Reid, Christoph Treude, Markus Wagner
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most online code snippets do not run. This means that developers looking to reuse code from online sources must manually find and fix errors. We present an approach for automatically evaluating and correcting errors in Node.js code snippets: Node Code Correction (NCC). NCC leverages the ability of the TypeScript compiler to generate errors and inform code corrections through the combination of TypeScript’s builtin codefixes, our own targeted fixes, and deletion of erroneous lines. Compared to existing approaches using linters, our findings suggest that NCC is capable of detecting a larger number of errors per snippet and more error types, and …

Hrgcn: Heterogeneous Graph-Level Anomaly Detection With Hierarchical Relation-Augmented Graph Neural Networks, Jiaxi Li, Guansong Pang, Ling Chen, Mohammad-Reza Namazi-Rad
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This work considers the problem of heterogeneous graph-level anomaly detection. Heterogeneous graphs are commonly used to represent behaviours between different types of entities in complex industrial systems for capturing as much information about the system operations as possible. Detecting anomalous heterogeneous graphs from a large set of system behaviour graphs is crucial for many real-world applications like online web/mobile service and cloud access control. To address the problem, we propose HRGCN, an unsupervised deep heterogeneous graph neural network, to model complex heterogeneous relations between different entities in the system for effectively identifying these anomalous behaviour graphs. HRGCN trains a hierarchical …

Balanced Blended Space: Proposing A Universal Theoretical Framework For Combinative Reality, David Smith, Frederick Bianchi
Publications and Research
In today's fragmented societies, a unified framework for communication and collaboration across different realities is crucial. We introduce Balanced Blended Space (BBS) as a framework for describing combinative reality, encompassing virtual, physical, and conceptual realms, all intrinsically connected. Interactions within these environments shape our perceptual space. This paper outlines key axiomatic assumptions, criteria for a universal framework, and fundamental terminology. We identify deep symmetries enabling the BBS framework, including Cognitive and Computational Symmetry, Physical and Virtual Symmetry, Mediation Pathway Symmetry, Space-Time Symmetry, and Sensory Symmetry. We propose tests to determine its viability, emphasizing virtual intelligence as a collaborative partner. We …

Structure Estimation Of Adversarial Distributions For Enhancing Model Robustness: A Clustering-Based Approach, Bader Rasheed, Adil Khan, Asad Masood Khattak
All Works
In this paper, we propose an advanced method for adversarial training that focuses on leveraging the underlying structure of adversarial perturbation distributions. Unlike conventional adversarial training techniques that consider adversarial examples in isolation, our approach employs clustering algorithms in conjunction with dimensionality reduction techniques to group adversarial perturbations, effectively constructing a more intricate and structured feature space for model training. Our method incorporates density and boundary-aware clustering mechanisms to capture the inherent spatial relationships among adversarial examples. Furthermore, we introduce a strategy for utilizing adversarial perturbations to enhance the delineation between clusters, leading to the formation of more robust and …
Robust Underwater State Estimation And Mapping, Bharat Joshi
Robust Underwater State Estimation And Mapping, Bharat Joshi
Theses and Dissertations
The ocean covers two-thirds of Earth, which is relatively unexplored compared to the landmass. Mapping underwater structures is essential for both archaeological and conservation purposes. This dissertation focuses on employing a robot team to map underwater structures using vision-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). The overarching goal of this research is to create a team of autonomous robots to map large underwater structures in a coordinated fashion. This requires maintaining an accurate robust pose estimate of oneself and knowing the relative pose of the other robots in the team. However, the GPS-denied and communication-constrained underwater environment, along with low visibility, …

Neutrosophic Bicubic B-Spline Surface Interpolation Model For Uncertainty Data, Siti Nur Idara Rosli, Mohammad Izat Emir Zulkifly
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Dealing with the uncertainty data problem using neutrosophic data is difficult since certain data are wasted due to noise. To address this issue, this work proposes a neutrosophic set (NS) strategy for interpolating the B-spline surface. The purpose of this study is to visualize the neutrosophic bicubic B-spline surface (NBB-sS) interpolation model. Thus, the principal results of this study introduce the NBB-sS interpolation method for neutrosophic data based on the NS notion. The neutrosophic control net relation (NCNR) is specified first using the NS notion. The B-spline basis function is then coupled to the NCNR to produce the NBB-sS. This …

Voucher Abuse Detection With Prompt-Based Fine-Tuning On Graph Neural Networks, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang, Yihan Liu, Yang Guo, Shuji Hao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Voucher abuse detection is an important anomaly detection problem in E-commerce. While many GNN-based solutions have emerged, the supervised paradigm depends on a large quantity of labeled data. A popular alternative is to adopt self-supervised pre-training using label-free data, and further fine-tune on a downstream task with limited labels. Nevertheless, the "pre-train, fine-tune" paradigm is often plagued by the objective gap between pre-training and downstream tasks. Hence, we propose VPGNN, a prompt-based fine-tuning framework on GNNs for voucher abuse detection. We design a novel graph prompting function to reformulate the downstream task into a similar template as the pretext task …
Robust Bidirectional Poly-Matching, Ween Jiann Lee, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Robust Bidirectional Poly-Matching, Ween Jiann Lee, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A fundamental problem in many scenarios is to match entities across two data sources. It is frequently presumed in prior work that entities to be matched are of comparable granularity. In this work, we address one-to-many or poly-matching in the scenario where entities have varying granularity. A distinctive feature of our problem is its bidirectional nature, where the 'one' or the 'many' could come from either source arbitrarily. Moreover, to deal with diverse entity representations that give rise to noisy similarity values, we incorporate novel notions of receptivity and reclusivity into a robust matching objective. As the optimal solution to …

AI-enabled collaborative robots are designed to be used in close collaboration with humans, thus requiring stringent safety standards and quick response times. Adversarial attacks pose a significant threat to the deep learning models of these systems, making it crucial to develop methods to improve the models' robustness against them. Adversarial training is one approach to improve their robustness: it works by augmenting the training data with adversarial examples. This, unfortunately, comes with the cost of increased computational overhead and extended training times. In this work, we balance the need for additional adversarial data with the goal of minimizing the training …

Objectfusion: Multi-Modal 3d Object Detection With Object-Centric Fusion, Q. Cai, Y. Pan, T. Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo, T. Mei
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent progress on multi-modal 3D object detection has featured BEV (Bird-Eye-View) based fusion, which effectively unifies both LiDAR point clouds and camera images in a shared BEV space. Nevertheless, it is not trivial to perform camera-to-BEV transformation due to the inherently ambiguous depth estimation of each pixel, resulting in spatial misalignment between these two multi-modal features. Moreover, such transformation also inevitably leads to projection distortion of camera image features in BEV space. In this paper, we propose a novel Object-centric Fusion (ObjectFusion) paradigm, which completely gets rid of camera-to-BEV transformation during fusion to align object-centric features across different modalities for …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present perspectives from 10 autistic Twitch streamers regarding their experiences as livestreamers and how autism uniquely colors their experiences. Livestreaming offers a social online experience distinct from in-person, face-to-face communication, where autistic people tend to encounter challenges. Our reflexive thematic analysis of interviews with 10 participants showcases autistic livestreamers’ perspectives in their own words. Our findings center on the importance of having streamers establishing connections with other, sharing autistic identities, controlling a space for social interaction, personal growth, and accessibility challenges. In our discussion, we highlight the crucial value of having a medium for autistic representation, as well as …

Unsupervised anomaly detection (UAD) aims to find anomalous images by optimising a detector using a training set that contains only normal images. UAD approaches can be based on reconstruction methods, self-supervised approaches, and Imagenet pre-trained models. Reconstruction methods, which detect anomalies from image reconstruction errors, are advantageous because they do not rely on the design of problem-specific pretext tasks needed by self-supervised approaches, and on the unreliable translation of models pre-trained from non-medical datasets. However, reconstruction methods may fail because they can have low reconstruction errors even for anomalous images. In this paper, we introduce a new reconstruction-based UAD approach …

The role that underwater image translation plays assists in generating rare images for marine applications. However, such translation tasks are still challenging due to data lacking, insufficient feature extraction ability, and the loss of content details. To address these issues, we propose a novel multi-scale image translation model based on style-independent discriminators and attention modules (SID-AM-MSITM), which learns the mapping relationship between two unpaired images for translation. We introduce Convolution Block Attention Modules (CBAM) to the generators and discriminators of SID-AM-MSITM to improve its feature extraction ability. Moreover, we construct style-independent discriminators that enable the discriminant results of SID-AM-MSITM to …

Multi-Representation Variational Autoencoder Via Iterative Latent Attention And Implicit Differentiation, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Variational Autoencoder (VAE) offers a non-linear probabilistic modeling of user's preferences. While it has achieved remarkable performance at collaborative filtering, it typically samples a single vector for representing user's preferences, which may be insufficient to capture the user's diverse interests. Existing solutions extend VAE to model multiple interests of users by resorting a variant of self-attentive method, i.e., employing prototypes to group items into clusters, each capturing one topic of user's interests. Despite showing improvements, the current design could be more effective since prototypes are randomly initialized and shared across users, resulting in uninformative and non-personalized clusters. To fill the gap, …

Invariant Training 2d-3d Joint Hard Samples For Few-Shot Point Cloud Recognition, Xuanyu Yi, Jiajun Deng, Qianru Sun, Xian-Sheng Hua, Joo-Hwee Lim, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We tackle the data scarcity challenge in few-shot point cloud recognition of 3D objects by using a joint prediction from a conventional 3D model and a well-pretrained 2D model. Surprisingly, such an ensemble, though seems trivial, has hardly been shown effective in recent 2D-3D models. We find out the crux is the less effective training for the “joint hard samples”, which have high confidence prediction on different wrong labels, implying that the 2D and 3D models do not collaborate well. To this end, our proposed invariant training strategy, called INVJOINT, does not only emphasize the training more on the hard …

Configuring Timing Parameters To Ensure Execution-Time Opacity In Timed Automata, Étienne André, Engel Lefaucheux, Didier Lime, Dylan Marinho, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Timing information leakage occurs whenever an attacker successfully deduces confidential internal information by observing some timed information such as events with timestamps. Timed automata are an extension of finite-state automata with a set of clocks evolving linearly and that can be tested or reset, making this formalism able to reason on systems involving concurrency and timing constraints. In this paper, we summarize a recent line of works using timed automata as the input formalism, in which we assume that the attacker has access (only) to the system execution time. First, we address the following execution-time opacity problem: given a timed …

Chinese Grammatical Error Correction (CGEC) has been attracting growing attention from researchers recently. In spite of the fact that multiple CGEC datasets have been developed to support the research, these datasets lack the ability to provide a deep linguistic topology of grammar errors, which is critical for interpreting and diagnosing CGEC approaches. To address this limitation, we introduce FlaCGEC, which is a new CGEC dataset featured with fine-grained linguistic annotation. Specifically, we collect raw corpus from the linguistic schema defined by Chinese language experts, conduct edits on sentences via rules, and refine generated samples manually, which results in 10k sentences …

Large language models (LLMs) have gained widespread adoption in various natural language processing tasks, including question answering and dialogue systems. However, a major drawback of LLMs is the issue of hallucination, where they generate unfaithful or inconsistent content that deviates from the input source, leading to severe consequences. In this paper, we propose a robust discriminator named RelD to effectively detect hallucination in LLMs' generated answers. RelD is trained on the constructed RelQA, a bilingual question-answering dialogue dataset along with answers generated by LLMs and a comprehensive set of metrics. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed RelD successfully detects …

Soft errors have become one of the main concerns for the resilience of HPC applications, as these errors can cause HPC applications to generate serious outcomes such as silent data corruption (SDC). Many approaches have been proposed to analyze the resilience of HPC applications. However, existing studies rarely address the challenges of analysis result perception. Specifically, resilience analysis techniques often produce a massive volume of unstructured data, making it difficult for programmers to perform resilience analysis due to non-intuitive raw data. Furthermore, different analysis models produce diverse results with multiple levels of detail, which can create obstacles to compare and …

Cryptocurrency’s pseudo-anonymous nature makes it vulnerable to malicious activities. However, existing deep learning solutions lack interpretability and only support retrospective analysis of specific malice types. To address these challenges, we propose Intention-Monitor for early malice detection in Bitcoin. Our model, utilizing Decision-Tree based feature Selection and Complement (DT-SC), builds different feature sets for different malice types. The Status Proposal Module (SPM) and hierarchical self-attention predictor provide real-time global status and address label predictions. A survival module determines the stopping point and proposes the status sequence (intention). Our model detects various malicious activities with strong interpretability, outperforming state-of-the-art methods in extensive …

Automated program repair (APR) has been gaining ground with substantial effort devoted to the area, opening up many challenges and opportunities. One such challenge is that the state-of-the-art repair techniques often resort to incomplete specifications, e.g., test cases that witness buggy behavior, to generate repairs. In practice, bug-exposing test cases are often available when: (1) developers, at the same time of (or after) submitting bug fixes, create the tests to assure the correctness of the fixes, or (2) regression errors occur. The former case – a scenario commonly used for creating popular bug datasets – however, may not be suitable …

Towards An Effective And Interpretable Refinement Approach For Dnn Verification, Jiaying Li, Guangdong Bai, Long H. Pham, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently, several abstraction refinement techniques have been proposed to improve the verification precision for deep neural networks (DNNs). However, these techniques usually take many refinement steps to verify a property and the refinement decision in each step is hard to interpret, thus hindering their analysis, reasoning and optimization. In this work, we propose SURGEON, a novel DNN verification refinement approach that is both effective and interpretable, allowing analyst to understand why and how each refinement decision is made. The main insight is to leverage the ‘interpretable’ nature of debugging processes and formulate the verification refinement problem as a debugging problem. Given …

arge language models (LLMs), such as GPT-3 and ChatGPT, have demonstrated remarkable results in various natural language processing (NLP) tasks with in-context learning, which involves inference based on a few demonstration examples. Despite their successes in NLP tasks, no investigation has been conducted to assess the ability of LLMs to perform document information extraction (DIE) using in-context learning. Applying LLMs to DIE poses two challenges: the modality and task gap. To this end, we propose a simple but effective in-context learning framework called ICL-D3IE, which enables LLMs to perform DIE with different types of demonstration examples. Specifically, we extract the …

We consider the problem of learning control policies in discrete-time stochastic systems which guarantee that the system stabilizes within some specified stabilization region with probability 1. Our approach is based on the novel notion of stabilizing ranking supermartingales (sRSMs) that we introduce in this work. Our sRSMs overcome the limitation of methods proposed in previous works whose applicability is restricted to systems in which the stabilizing region cannot be left once entered under any control policy. We present a learning procedure that learns a control policy together with an sRSM that formally certifies probability 1 stability, both learned as neural …

We consider bidding games, a class of two-player zerosum graph games. The game proceeds as follows. Both players have bounded budgets. A token is placed on a vertex of a graph, in each turn the players simultaneously submit bids, and the higher bidder moves the token, where we break bidding ties in favor of Player 1. Player 1 wins the game iff the token visits a designated target vertex. Weconsider, for the first time, poorman discrete-bidding in which the granularity of the bids is restricted and the higher bid is paid to the bank. Previous work either did not impose …

Over the past 5 years, the number of DoD software organizations that employ nontraditional organizational structures has increased. These organizations, commonly referred to as software factories, often employ the network-based organizational structures found within high-technology industries. This article details ways in which network analysis techniques can be used to create a big picture view of these nontraditional organizations. Drawing on methodologies employed by network researchers, the authors develop and present an interorganizational analysis process that highlights a program's social and economic structures. Following the case history approach, they demonstrate the applicability of this approach by analyzing an emergent DoD software …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Age estimation from facial images has gained significant attention due to its practical applications such as public security. However, one of the major challenges faced in this field is the limited availability of comprehensive training data. Moreover, due to the gradual nature of aging, similar-aged faces tend to share similarities despite their race, gender, or location. Recent studies on age estimation utilize convolutional neural networks (CNN), treating every facial region equally and disregarding potentially informative patches that contain age-specific details. Therefore, an attention module can be used to focus extra attention on important patches in the image. In this study, …
