Effective Entity Augmentation By Querying External Data Sources, Christopher Buss, Jasmin Mousavi, Mikhail Tokarev, Arash Termehchy, David Maier, Stefan Lee Oct 2023

Effective Entity Augmentation By Querying External Data Sources, Christopher Buss, Jasmin Mousavi, Mikhail Tokarev, Arash Termehchy, David Maier, Stefan Lee

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Users often want to augment and enrich entities in their datasets with relevant information from external data sources. As many external sources are accessible only via keyword-search interfaces, a user usually has to manually formulate a keyword query that extract relevant information for each entity. This approach is challenging as many data sources contain numerous tuples, only a small fraction of which may contain entity-relevant information. Furthermore, different datasets may represent the same information in distinct forms and under different terms (e.g., different data source may use different names to refer to the same person). In such cases, it is …

Understanding How To Diversify The Cybersecurity Workforce: A Qualitative Analysis, Maria Chaparro Osman, Maureen Namukasa, Cherrise Ficke, Isabella Piasecki, Tj Oconnor, Meredith Carroll

Aeronautics Faculty Publications

A robust cybersecurity workforce is critical for protection against a range of malicious attacks. However, it has been noted that there are many vacancies and a shortage of individuals entering the cybersecurity workforce. The workforce shortage has been partially attributed to the lack of diversity in the cybersecurity domain, with women, African Americans, and Hispanics remaining underrepresented in educational and professional settings. Using a qualitative approach, this work sought to investigate what led underrepresented minorities currently involved in cybersecurity to the industry, with the goal of determining methods to attract underrepresented minorities and diversify the workforce. A thematic analysis was …

Auxiliary Features-Guided Super Resolution For Monte Carlo Rendering, Qiqi Hou, Feng Liu Oct 2023

Auxiliary Features-Guided Super Resolution For Monte Carlo Rendering, Qiqi Hou, Feng Liu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper investigates super-resolution to reduce the number of pixels to render and thus speed up Monte Carlo rendering algorithms. While great progress has been made to super-resolution technologies, it is essentially an ill-posed problem and cannot recover high-frequency details in renderings. To address this problem, we exploit high-resolution auxiliary features to guide super-resolution of low-resolution renderings. These high-resolution auxiliary features can be quickly rendered by a rendering engine and at the same time provide valuable high-frequency details to assist super-resolution. To this end, we develop a cross-modality transformer network that consists of an auxiliary feature branch and a low-resolution …

Trustguard: Containment Architecture, Michael Hu, Sophie Russ, Stephen Beard

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

All software security relies on proper execution at the hardware level. This research extends work on containment architectures, which ensure that any ill effects of malicious or buggy hardware are contained within the system. This is accomplished by a small, security hardware component, called the Sentry, validating communication before it leaves the system. This research assesses the advantages and disadvantages of using the CHISEL hardware language, from a security and verification standpoint. Further, this research investigates more efficient Merkle trees to optimization caching within the Sentry chip to improve performance and power utilization.

Extending The Reach Of The Point-To-Set Principle, J. H. Lutz, Neil Lutz, E. Mayordomo Oct 2023

Extending The Reach Of The Point-To-Set Principle, J. H. Lutz, Neil Lutz, E. Mayordomo

Computer Science Faculty Works

The point-to-set principle of J. Lutz and N. Lutz (2018) has recently enabled the theory of computing to be used to answer open questions about fractal geometry in Euclidean spaces ℝⁿ. These are classical questions, meaning that their statements do not involve computation or related aspects of logic.

In this paper we extend the reach of the point-to-set principle from Euclidean spaces to arbitrary separable metric spaces X. We first extend two algorithmic dimensions—computability-theoretic versions of classical Hausdorff and packing dimensions that assign dimensions dim(x) and Dim(x) to individual points x ∈ X—to arbitrary separable …

The Role Of Feedback Within Scrum For Engineering Department Operations, Massood Towhidnejad, Omar Ochoa, James J. Pembridge, Radu Babiceanu

Posters

The Scrum framework is built on the principles of inspection and adaptation. Feedback drives the inspection process, and the team adapts based on that feedback to optimize its performance and outcomes. Within engineering departments, Scrum requires departments to examine how and when feedback is obtained to ensure that the department is remaining agile. This poster illustrates the role of feedback within two Scrum teams, one focused on student success and the other focused on faculty rewards and incentives. The two cases emphasize the need for continuous introspection at team and department levels.

Diversity Similarity Join For Big Data, Yasin N. Silva, Juan Martinez, Pedro Castro Cea, Humberto Razente, Maria Camila N. Barioni Oct 2023

Diversity Similarity Join For Big Data, Yasin N. Silva, Juan Martinez, Pedro Castro Cea, Humberto Razente, Maria Camila N. Barioni

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Similarity Join (SJ) has become one of the most popular and valuable data processing operators in analyzing large amounts of data. Various types of similarity join operators have been effectively used in multiple scenarios. However, these operators usually generate a large output size and many similar output pairs that represent almost the same information. In previous work, a new operator called Diversity Similarity Join (DSJ) has been proposed to address these issues. DSJ generates a smaller scale output and more meaningful and diverse result pairs. This operator, however, was proposed as a single node operator crucially limiting its scalability …

Complexity Of Reconfiguration In Surface Chemical Reaction Networks, Robert M. Alaniz, Josh Brunner, Michael Coulombe, Erik D. Demaine, Yevhenii Diomidov, Ryan Knobel, Timothy Gomez, Elise Grizzell, Jayson Lynch, Andrew Rodriguez, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We analyze the computational complexity of basic reconfiguration problems for the recently introduced surface Chemical Reaction Networks (sCRNs), where ordered pairs of adjacent species nondeterministically transform into a different ordered pair of species according to a predefined set of allowed transition rules (chemical reactions). In particular, two questions that are fundamental to the simulation of sCRNs are whether a given configuration of molecules can ever transform into another given configuration, and whether a given cell can ever contain a given species, given a set of transition rules. We show that these problems can be solved in polynomial time, are NP-complete, …

The Combination Approaches For One Class Classifier Ensembles For Software Defect Datasets, Maitha Mohammed Alkalbani Oct 2023

The Combination Approaches For One Class Classifier Ensembles For Software Defect Datasets, Maitha Mohammed Alkalbani

Theses

The classification of imbalanced datasets poses significant challenges, becoming a crucial topic in ML, particularly when standard algorithms struggle with accurate classification. In OCC, classifiers may encounter objects from ensembles of one class, leading to outlier scores generated at different scales. Additionally, there is a lack of a unified combination method, with many experiments resorting to using an average as the combination method. The thesis aims to investigate the effectiveness of normalization and unnormalized outlier scores on OCC ensembles. Furthermore, we conducted a comparative study of different types of combination methods. We used k-means clustering as OCC model, and the …

Constructing Cyber-Physical System Testing Suites Using Active Sensor Fuzzing, Fan. Zhang, Qianmei. Wu, Bohan. Xuan, Yuqi. Chen, Wei. Lin, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun, Binbin. Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) automating critical public infrastructure face a pervasive threat of attack, motivating research into different types of countermeasures. Assessing the effectiveness of these countermeasures is challenging, however, as benchmarks are difficult to construct manually, existing automated testing solutions often make unrealistic assumptions, and blindly fuzzing is ineffective at finding attacks due to the enormous search spaces and resource requirements. In this work, we propose active sensor fuzzing , a fully automated approach for building test suites without requiring any a prior knowledge about a CPS. Our approach employs active learning techniques. Applied to a real-world water treatment system, …

Designing A Human-Centered Intelligent System To Monitor & Explain Abnormal Patterns Of Older Adults, Min Hun Lee, Daniel P. Siewiorek, Alexandre Bernardino

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Older adult care technologies are increasingly explored to support the independent living of older adults by monitoring their abnormal activities and informing caregivers to provide intervention if necessary. However, the adoption of these technologies remains challenging due to several factors (e.g. lack of usability). In this work, we present a human-centered, intelligent system for older adult care. Our proposed designs of the system were created based on the findings from a focus group session with caregivers. This system monitors the abnormal activities of an older adult using wireless motion sensors and machine learning models. In addition, unlike previous work that …

Owner-Free Distributed Symmetric Searchable Encryption Supporting Conjunctive Queries, Qiuyun Tong, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Yunwei Wang, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng Oct 2023

Owner-Free Distributed Symmetric Searchable Encryption Supporting Conjunctive Queries, Qiuyun Tong, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Yunwei Wang, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Symmetric Searchable Encryption (SSE), as an ideal primitive, can ensure data privacy while supporting retrieval over encrypted data. However, existing multi-user SSE schemes require the data owner to share the secret key with all query users or always be online to generate search tokens. While there are some solutions to this problem, they have at least one weakness, such as non-supporting conjunctive query, result decryption assistance of the data owner, and unauthorized access. To solve the above issues, we propose an Owner-free Distributed Symmetric searchable encryption supporting Conjunctive query (ODiSC). Specifically, we first evaluate the Learning-Parity-with-Noise weak Pseudorandom Function (LPN-wPRF) …

Deep Video Demoireing Via Compact Invertible Dyadic Decomposition, Yuhui Quan, Haoran Huang, Shengfeng He, Ruotao Xu Oct 2023

Deep Video Demoireing Via Compact Invertible Dyadic Decomposition, Yuhui Quan, Haoran Huang, Shengfeng He, Ruotao Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Removing moire patterns from videos recorded on screens or complex textures is known as video demoireing. It is a challenging task as both structures and textures of an image usually exhibit strong periodic patterns, which thus are easily confused with moire patterns and can be significantly erased in the removal process. By interpreting video demoireing as a multi-frame decomposition problem, we propose a compact invertible dyadic network called CIDNet that progressively decouples latent frames and the moire patterns from an input video sequence. Using a dyadic cross-scale coupling structure with coupling layers tailored for multi-scale processing, CIDNet aims at disentangling …

Diffuse3d: Wide-Angle 3d Photography Via Bilateral Diffusion, Yutao Jiang, Yang Zhou, Yuan Liang, Wenxi Liu, Jianbo Jiao, Yuhui Quan, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper aims to resolve the challenging problem of wide-angle novel view synthesis from a single image, a.k.a. wide-angle 3D photography. Existing approaches rely on local context and treat them equally to inpaint occluded RGB and depth regions, which fail to deal with large-region occlusion (i.e., observing from an extreme angle) and foreground layers might blend into background inpainting. To address the above issues, we propose Diffuse3D which employs a pre-trained diffusion model for global synthesis, while amending the model to activate depth-aware inference. Our key insight is to alter the convolution mechanism in the denoising process. We inject depth …

A Usability Study Of Nomon: A Flexible Interface For Single-Switch Users, Nicholas Bonaker, Emli Mari Nel, Keith Vertanen, Tamara Broderick Oct 2023

A Usability Study Of Nomon: A Flexible Interface For Single-Switch Users, Nicholas Bonaker, Emli Mari Nel, Keith Vertanen, Tamara Broderick

Michigan Tech Publications

Many individuals with severe motor impairments communicate via a single switch - which might be activated by a blink, facial movement, or puff of air. These switches are commonly used as input to scanning systems that allow selection from a 2D grid of options. Nomon is an alternative interface that provides a more flexible layout, not confined to a grid. Previous work suggests that, even when options appear in a grid, Nomon may be faster and easier to use than scanning systems. However, previous work primarily tested Nomon with non-motor-impaired individuals, and evaluation with potential end-users was limited to a …

Machine Learning Approach To Activity Categorization In Young Adults Using Biomechanical Metrics, Nathan Q. C. Holland Oct 2023

Machine Learning Approach To Activity Categorization In Young Adults Using Biomechanical Metrics, Nathan Q. C. Holland

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Inactive adults often have decreased musculoskeletal health and increased risk factors for chronic diseases. However, there is limited data linking biomechanical measurements of generally healthy young adults to their physical activity levels assessed through questionnaires. Commonly used data collection methods in biomechanics for assessing musculoskeletal health include but are not limited to muscle quality (measured as echo intensity when using ultrasound), isokinetic (i.e., dynamic) muscle strength, muscle activations, and functional movement assessments using motion capture systems. These assessments can be time consuming for both data collection and processing. Therefore, understanding if all biomechanical assessments are necessary to classify the activity …

Tracing And Segmentation Of Molecular Patterns In 3-Dimensional Cryo-Et/Em Density Maps Through Algorithmic Image Processing And Deep Learning-Based Techniques, Salim Sazzed Oct 2023

Tracing And Segmentation Of Molecular Patterns In 3-Dimensional Cryo-Et/Em Density Maps Through Algorithmic Image Processing And Deep Learning-Based Techniques, Salim Sazzed

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Understanding the structures of biological macromolecules is highly important as they are closely associated with cellular functionalities. Comprehending the precise organization of actin filaments is crucial because they form the dynamic cytoskeleton, which offers structural support to cells and connects the cell’s interior with its surroundings. However, determining the precise organization of actin filaments is challenging due to the poor quality of cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) images, which suffer from low signal-to-noise (SNR) ratios and the presence of missing wedge, as well as diverse shape characteristics of actin filaments. To address these formidable challenges, the primary component of this dissertation focuses …

A Congressional Twitter Network Dataset Quantifying Pairwise Probability Of Influence, Christian Fink, Nathan Omodt, Sydney Zinnecker, Gina Sprint

Physics Faculty Scholarship

We present a social network dataset based on interactions between members of the 117th United States Congress between Feb. 9, 2022, and June 9, 2022. The dataset takes the form of a directed, weighted network in which the edge weights are empirically obtained “probabilities of influence” between all pairs of Congresspeople. Twitter's application programming interface (API) V2 was used to determine the number of times each member of Congress retweeted, quote tweeted, replied to, or mentioned other Congressional members, and the probability of influence was found by normalizing the summed influence by the number of tweets issued by each Congressperson. …

Object recognition is an important area in computer vision. Object recognition has been advanced significantly by deep learning that unifies feature extraction and classification. In general, deep neural networks, such as Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs), are trained in high-performance systems. Aiming to extend the reach of deep learning to personal computing, I propose a study of deep learning-based object recognition in low-end systems, such as laptops. This research includes how differing layer configurations and hyperparameter values used in CNNs can either create or resolve the issue of overfitting and affect final accuracy levels of object recognition systems. The main contribution …

Improving Semantic Document Classification Accuracy By Integrating Human-Crafted Knowledge, Zachary Weinfeld, Lubomir Stanchev

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Document classification is a pivotal task in various domains, warranting the development of robust algorithms. Among these, the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) algorithm, introduced by Google, has proven to perform well when fine-tuned for the task at hand. Leveraging transformer architecture, BERT demonstrates stellar language understanding capabilities. However, the integration of BERT with a range of techniques has shown potential for further enhancing classification accuracy. This work investigates several techniques that leverage semantic understanding to improve the performance of document classification models trained with BERT. Specifically, we explore three methods. First, we will balance corpuses afflicted by imbalanced …

Machine Learning Prediction Of Hea Properties, Nicholas J. Beaver, Nathaniel Melisso, Travis Murphy Oct 2023

Machine Learning Prediction Of Hea Properties, Nicholas J. Beaver, Nathaniel Melisso, Travis Murphy

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

High-entropy alloys (HEA) are a very new development in the field of metallurgical materials. They are made up of multiple principle atoms unlike traditional alloys, which contributes to their high configurational entropy. The microstructure and properties of HEAs are are not well predicted with the models developed for more common engineering alloys, and there is not enough data available on HEAs to fully represent the complex behavior of these alloys. To that end, we explore how the use of machine learning models can be used to model the complex, high dimensional behavior in the HEA composition space. Based on our …

A System For The Detection Of Adversarial Attacks In Computer Vision Via Performance Metrics, Sarah Reynolds Oct 2023

A System For The Detection Of Adversarial Attacks In Computer Vision Via Performance Metrics, Sarah Reynolds

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Adversarial attacks, or attacks committed by an adversary to hijack a system, are prevalent in the deep learning tasks of computer vision and are one of the greatest threats to these models' safe and accurate use. These attacks force the trained model to misclassify an image, using pixel-level changes undetectable to the human eye. Various defenses against these attacks exist and are detailed in this work. The work of previous researchers has established that when adversarial attacks occur, different node patterns in a Deep Neural Network (DNN) are activated within the model. Additionally, it is known that CPU and GPU …

Online Aircraft System Identification Using A Novel Parameter Informed Reinforcement Learning Method, Nathan Schaff Oct 2023

Online Aircraft System Identification Using A Novel Parameter Informed Reinforcement Learning Method, Nathan Schaff

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This thesis presents the development and analysis of a novel method for training reinforcement learning neural networks for online aircraft system identification of multiple similar linear systems, such as all fixed wing aircraft. This approach, termed Parameter Informed Reinforcement Learning (PIRL), dictates that reinforcement learning neural networks should be trained using input and output trajectory/history data as is convention; however, the PIRL method also includes any known and relevant aircraft parameters, such as airspeed, altitude, center of gravity location and/or others. Through this, the PIRL Agent is better suited to identify novel/test-set aircraft.

First, the PIRL method is applied to …
