V3 Onion Service Vulnerability On Website Fingerprinting, Olusegun Akinyemi Jun 2023

V3 Onion Service Vulnerability On Website Fingerprinting, Olusegun Akinyemi

Student Theses and Dissertations

Website fingerprinting attacks have revealed a vulnerability in Tor's network. Previous studies have shown success rates against the V2 onion service network and the possibility of real-time fingerprinting. With the transition to V3 onion services, there has yet to be any recent research on the impact of these changes on website fingerprinting attacks and the feasibility of real-time fingerprinting attacks. This work consists of two experiments: A Comparative Study of Website Fingerprinting Attacks in V2 and V3 Onion Services of Tor Networks and Enhanced Real-Time Fingerprinting Attacks on Tor Networks. These experiments involve analyzing the differences between V2 and V3 …

Ai Art: Artists’ Best Friend Or Mortal Enemy?, Ethan Gabrys Jun 2023

Ai Art: Artists’ Best Friend Or Mortal Enemy?, Ethan Gabrys

Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research

This paper analyzes the impacts and implications of generative AI software on art and examines the ethics of using such tools. Through the argument that careless use of these tools presents a danger to the art world as they risk devaluing human expression, Gabrys states that “as what it means to be human changes with each generation, new artists express sentiment through their art. Art has the ability to tell us about the human experience.” He concludes that the use of AI tools takes the skill and sentiment of human artists out of the equation, begging the question: if the …

Counterfactual Replacement Analysis For Interpretation Of Blackbox Sexism Classification Models, Anders Knospe

Computer Science Senior Theses

This paper describes the AKD team’s system designed for SemEval-2023 Task 10: Explainable Detection of Online Sexism (EDOS). We implement a simple fine-tuned GPT-3 model, ranking 26 on the leaderboard for task A. We also discuss different approaches to interpretability in the context of critiquing the EDOS task’s sub-category oriented approach. Finally, we propose counterfactual replacement analysis, a novel prototype technique for approaching explainability.

Next-Generation Sequencing Data-Based Association Testing Of A Group Of Genetic Markers For Complex Responses Using A Generalized Linear Model Framework, Zheng Xu, Song Yan, Cong Wu, Qing Duan, Sixia Chen, Yun Li Jun 2023

Next-Generation Sequencing Data-Based Association Testing Of A Group Of Genetic Markers For Complex Responses Using A Generalized Linear Model Framework, Zheng Xu, Song Yan, Cong Wu, Qing Duan, Sixia Chen, Yun Li

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

To study the relationship between genetic variants and phenotypes, association testing is adopted; however, most association studies are conducted by genotype-based testing. Testing methods based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) data without genotype calling demonstrate an advantage over testing methods based on genotypes in the scenarios when genotype estimation is not accurate. Our objective was to develop NGS data-based methods for association studies to fill the gap in the literature. Single-variant testing methods based on NGS data have been proposed, including our previously proposed single-variant NGS data-based testing method, i.e., UNC combo method. The NGS data-based group testing method has been …

Predicting Phishing Victimization: Comparing Prior Victimization, Cognitive, And Emotional Styles, And Vulnerable Or Protective E-Mail Strategies, Loretta Stalans, Eric Chan-Tin, Anna Hart, Madeline Moran, Shelia Kennison

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Phishing victimization is prevalent and results in theft of personal identifiable information (PII) or installing malware to steal PII. Drawing upon social psychological and criminological theories, we conducted a prospective study to assess three groups of predictors to being phished or not: a) prior victimization; b) protective or vulnerable habitual strategies, and c) emotional and cognitive decision-making styles. Students (N = 236) completed a survey assessing these predictors and then about 4 weeks later received a phishing e-mail using the university’s phishing testing system. The e-mail requested that they click on a link and enter their student ID to avoid …

Which Activation Function Works Best For Training Artificial Pancreas: Empirical Fact And Its Theoretical Explanation, Lehel Dénes-Fazakas, Lásló Szilágyi, György Eigner, Olga Kosheleva, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most effective ways to help patients at the dangerous levels of diabetes is an artificial pancreas, a device that constantly monitors the patient's blood sugar level and injects insulin based on this level. Patient's reaction to insulin is highly individualized, so the artificial pancreas needs to be trained on each patient. It turns out that the best training results are attained when instead of the usual ReLU neurons, we use their minor modification known as Exponential Linear Units (ELU). In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for the empirically observed effectiveness of ELUs.

(R2053) Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model Subject To Two-Stage Vacation Policy With Imperfect Service, Setup Time, Breakdown, Delay Time, Phase Type Repair And Reneging Customer, N. Arulmozhi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we study a continuous-time single server queueing system with an infinite system of capacity, a two-stage vacation policy with imperfect service, setup, breakdown, delay time, phase-type of repair and customer reneging. The Markovian Arrival Process is used for the arrival of a customer and the phase-type distribution is used when offering service. This encompasses the policy of two vacations: a single working vacation and multiple vacations. Using the Matrix-Analytic Method to approach the system generates an invariant probability vector for this model. Henceforth, the busy period, waiting time distribution and cost analysis are the additional findings. The …

(R1975) Map/Ph(1), Ph(2)/2 Queue With Multiple Vacation, Optional Service, Consultations And Interruptions, G. Ayyappan, S. Sankeetha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Two types of services are explored in this paper: regular server and main server, both of which provide both regular and optional services. Customers arrive using the Markovian Arrival Process (MAP), and service time is allocated based on phase type. The regular server uses the main server as a resource. Customers’ service at the primary server is disrupted as a result. When the queue size is empty, the main server can take several vacations. This system has been represented as a QBD Process that investigates steady state with the use of matrix analytic techniques, employing finite-dimensional block matrices. Our model’s …

Understanding Masked Autoencoders Via Hierarchical Latent Variable Models, Lingjing Kong, Martin Q. Ma, Guangyi Chen, Eric P. Xing, Yuejie Chi, Louis Philippe Morency, Kun Zhang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Masked autoencoder (MAE), a simple and effective self-supervised learning framework based on the reconstruction of masked image regions, has recently achieved prominent success in a variety of vision tasks. Despite the emergence of intriguing empirical observations on MAE, a theoretically principled understanding is still lacking. In this work, we formally characterize and justify existing empirical in-sights and provide theoretical guarantees of MAE. We formulate the underlying data-generating process as a hierarchical latent variable model, and show that under reasonable assumptions, MAE provably identifies a set of latent variables in the hierarchical model, explaining why MAE can extract high-level information from …

Haptic is the modality that complements traditional multimedia, i.e., audiovisual, to evolve the next wave of innovation at which the Internet data stream can be exchanged to enable remote skills and control applications. This will require ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability to evolve the mobile experience into the era of Digital Twin and Tactile Internet. While the 5th generation of mobile networks is not yet widely deployed, Long-Term Evolution (LTE-A) latency remains much higher than the 1 ms requirement for the Tactile Internet and therefore the Digital Twin. This work investigates an interesting solution based on the incorporation of Software-defined …

Natural Color Interpretation Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Degrees, Victor L. Timchenko, Yury P. Kondratenko, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Jun 2023

Natural Color Interpretation Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Degrees, Victor L. Timchenko, Yury P. Kondratenko, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Intuitively, interval-values fuzzy degrees are more adequate for representing expert uncertainty than the traditional [0,1]-based ones. Indeed, the very need for fuzzy degrees comes from the fact that experts often cannot describe their opinion not in terms of precise numbers, but by using imprecise ("fuzzy") words from natural language like "small". In such situations, it is strange to expect the same expert to be able to provide an exact number describing his/her degree of certainty; it is more natural to ask this expert to mark the whole interval (or even, more generally, a fuzzy set of possible degrees). In spite …

Logical Inference Inevitably Appears: Fuzzy-Based Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Orsolya Csiszar

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many thousands years ago, our primitive ancestors did not have the ability to reason logically and to perform logical inference. This ability appeared later. A natural question is: was this appearance inevitable -- or was this a lucky incident that could have been missed? In this paper, we use fuzzy techniques to provide a possible answer to this question. Our answer is: yes, the appearance of logical inference in inevitable.

Is Fully Explainable Ai Even Possible: Fuzzy-Based Analysis, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2023

Is Fully Explainable Ai Even Possible: Fuzzy-Based Analysis, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main limitations of many current AI-based decision-making systems is that they do not provide any understandable explanations of how they came up with the produced decision. Taking into account that these systems are not perfect, that their decisions are sometimes far from good, the absence of an explanation makes it difficult to separate good decisions from suspicious ones. Because of this, many researchers are working on making AI explainable. In some applications areas -- e.g., in chess -- practitioners get an impression that there is a limit to understandability, that some decisions remain inhuman -- not explainable. …

Why Fuzzy Control Is Often More Robust (And Smoother): A Theoretical Explanation, Orsolya Csiszar, Gábor Csiszar, Olga Kosheleva, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, practitioners use easier-to-compute fuzzy control to approximate the more-difficult-co-compute optimal control. As expected, for many characteristics, this approximate control is slightly worse than the optimal control it approximates, However, with respect to robustness or smoothness, the approximating fuzzy control is often better than the original one. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for this somewhat mysterious empirical phenomenon.

An Investigation Into Machine Learning Techniques For Designing Dynamic Difficulty Agents In Real-Time Games, Ryan Adare Dunagan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Video games are an incredibly popular pastime enjoyed by people of all ages world wide. Many different kinds of games exist, but most games feature some elements of the player overcoming some challenge, usually through gameplay. These challenges are insurmountable for some people and may turn them off to video games as a pastime. Games can be made more accessible to players of little skill and/or experience through the use of Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment (DDA) systems that adjust the difficulty of the game in response to the player’s performance. This research seeks to establish the effectiveness of machine learning techniques …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are weaving their way into the fabric of society, where they are playing a crucial role in numerous facets of our lives. As we witness the increased deployment of AI and ML in various types of devices, we benefit from their use into energy-efficient algorithms for low powered devices. In this paper, we investigate a scale and medium that is far smaller than conventional devices as we move towards molecular systems that can be utilized to perform machine learning functions, i.e., Molecular Machine Learning (MML). Fundamental to the operation of MML is the …

Why Softmax? Because It Is The Only Consistent Approach To Probability-Based Classification, Anatole Lokshin, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2023

Why Softmax? Because It Is The Only Consistent Approach To Probability-Based Classification, Anatole Lokshin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical problems, the most effective classification techniques are based on deep learning. In this approach, once the neural network generates values corresponding to different classes, these values are transformed into probabilities by using the softmax formula. Researchers tried other transformation, but they did not work as well as softmax. A natural question is: why is softmax so effective? In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this effectiveness: namely, we prove that softmax is the only consistent approach to probability-based classification. In precise terms, it is the only approach for which two reasonable probability-based ideas -- Least …

Selecting The Most Adequate Fuzzy Operation For Explainable Ai: Empirical Fact And Its Possible Theoretical Explanation, Orsolya Csiszar, Gábor Csiszar, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A reasonable way to make AI results explainable is to approximate the corresponding deep-learning-generated function by a simple expression formed by fuzzy operations. Experiments on real data show that out of all easy-to-compute fuzzy operations, the best approximation is attained if we use an operation a + b − 0.5 ( limited to the interval [0,1]$. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical result.

In this context, prompt …

Exploiting Association Rules Mining To Inform The Use Of Non-Manual Features In Sign Language Processing, Robert G. Smith Jun 2023

Exploiting Association Rules Mining To Inform The Use Of Non-Manual Features In Sign Language Processing, Robert G. Smith

Other Resources

In recent years, the use of virtual assistants and voice user interfaces has become a latent part of modern living. Unseen to the user are the various artificial intelligence and natural language processing technologies, the vast datasets, and the linguistic insights that underpin such tools. The technologies supporting them have chiefly targeted widely used spoken languages, leaving sign language users at a disadvantage. One important reason why sign languages are unsupported by such tools is a requirement of the underpinning technologies for a comprehensive description of the language. Sign language processing technologies endeavour to bridge this technology inequality.

Recent approaches …

Commonsense Based Text Mining On Urban Policy, Manish Puri, Aparna S. Varde, Gerard De Melo

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Local laws on urban policy, i.e., ordinances directly affect our daily life in various ways (health, business etc.), yet in practice, for many citizens they remain impervious and complex. This article focuses on an approach to make urban policy more accessible and comprehensible to the general public and to government officials, while also addressing pertinent social media postings. Due to the intricacies of the natural language, ranging from complex legalese in ordinances to informal lingo in tweets, it is practical to harness human judgment here. To this end, we mine ordinances and tweets via reasoning based on commonsense knowledge so …

Exploring The Educational Potential Of Ai Generative Art In 3d Design Fundamentals: A Case Study On Prompt Engineering And Creative Workflows, James Hutson, Bryan Robertson

Faculty Scholarship

AI will be increasingly integrated into artistic practices and creative workflows with prompt engineering assuming an increasingly important role in the process. With readilyavailable generative AI, such as Midjourney, DALL-E 2, and Craiyon (formerly DALLE-mini), anyone can seemingly create "art,” prompting questions about the future necessity of art and design education. However, whereas the ease with which content can be created has seen an outcry from the traditional artmaking community, fears over widespread adoption replacing the need for a firm foundation in art and design principles and fundamentals is unfounded. Instead, these tools should be seen and adopted as other …

Generalizing Graph Neural Networks Across Graphs, Time, And Tasks, Zhihao Wen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Graph-structured data are ubiquitous across numerous real-world contexts, encompassing social networks, commercial graphs, bibliographic networks, and biological systems. Delving into the analysis of these graphs can yield significant understanding pertaining to their corresponding application fields.Graph representation learning offers a potent solution to graph analytics challenges by transforming a graph into a low-dimensional space while preserving its information to the greatest extent possible. This conversion into low-dimensional vectors enables the efficient computation of subsequent graph algorithms. The majority of prior research has concentrated on deriving node representations from a single, static graph. However, numerous real-world situations demand rapid generation of representations …

Scanet: Self-Paced Semi-Curricular Attention Network For Non-Homogeneous Image Dehazing, Yu Guo, Yuan Gao, Ryan Wen Liu, Yuxu Lu, Jingxiang Qu, Shengfeng He, Ren Wenqi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The presence of non-homogeneous haze can cause scene blurring, color distortion, low contrast, and other degradations that obscure texture details. Existing homogeneous dehazing methods struggle to handle the non-uniform distribution of haze in a robust manner. The crucial challenge of non-homogeneous dehazing is to effectively extract the non-uniform distribution features and reconstruct the details of hazy areas with high quality. In this paper, we propose a novel self-paced semi-curricular attention network, called SCANet, for non-homogeneous image dehazing that focuses on enhancing haze-occluded regions. Our approach consists of an attention generator network and a scene re-construction network. We use the luminance …

Curricular Contrastive Regularization For Physics-Aware Single Image Dehazing, Yu Zheng, Jiahui Zhan, Shengfeng He, Yong Du

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Considering the ill-posed nature, contrastive regularization has been developed for single image dehazing, introducing the information from negative images as a lower bound. However, the contrastive samples are non-consensual, as the negatives are usually represented distantly from the clear (i.e., positive) image, leaving the solution space still under-constricted. Moreover, the interpretability of deep dehazing models is underexplored towards the physics of the hazing process. In this paper, we propose a novel curricular contrastive regularization targeted at a consensual contrastive space as opposed to a non-consensual one. Our negatives, which provide better lower-bound constraints, can be assembled from 1) the hazy …

Efficient Privacy-Preserving Spatial Range Query Over Outsourced Encrypted Data, Yinbin Miao, Yutao Yang, Xinghua Li, Zhiquan Liu, Hongwei Li, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid development of Location-Based Services (LBS), a large number of LBS providers outsource spatial data to cloud servers to reduce their high computational and storage burdens, but meanwhile incur some security issues such as location privacy leakage. Thus, extensive privacy-preserving LBS schemes have been proposed. However, the existing solutions using Bloom filter do not take into account the redundant bits that do not map information in Bloom filter, resulting in high computational overheads, and reveal the inclusion relationship in Bloom filter. To solve these issues, we propose an efficient Privacy-preserving Spatial Range Query (PSRQ) scheme by skillfully combining …
