This paper investigates the intersection of generative AI, Large Language Models (LLM), and robotics. Exemplified by systems like ChatGPT and technological marvels such as Ameca the Robot, the combination of technologies will allow humans to transcend the limitations of death. Through digital necromancy, a practice encompassing the technological resurrection of deceased individuals, the ability to not only passively see recordings of loved ones but to interact with them is made possible, leading to ethical and psychological considerations. Therefore, examining these trends extends into the motives underlying engagement with both incorporeal and corporeal reproductions of individuals, with reasons ranging from memory …

Deep Generative Sculpting Models For Single Image 3d Reconstruction, Jason Jennings
Deep Generative Sculpting Models For Single Image 3d Reconstruction, Jason Jennings
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In the field of computer vision, learning representations of images is an important task. This dissertation introduces deep generative sculpting models (DGSM), deep learning models that learn 3D representations of objects from 2D images. DGSMs use convolutional networks combined with a differentiable renderer to attempt to "sculpt" a base 3D mesh, such as a sphere, to faithfully represent an object in the scene, and render it to reconstruct the input image. The core methodology revolves around the encoding of the input image into latent variables. These variables are decoded into interpretable scene parameters, describing the object's translation, rotation, scale, texture, …

Deep Isolation Forest For Anomaly Detection, Hongzuo Xu, Guansong Pang, Yijie Wang, Yongjun Wang
Deep Isolation Forest For Anomaly Detection, Hongzuo Xu, Guansong Pang, Yijie Wang, Yongjun Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Isolation forest (iForest) has been emerging as arguably the most popular anomaly detector in recent years due to its general effectiveness across different benchmarks and strong scalability. Nevertheless, its linear axis-parallel isolation method often leads to (i) failure in detecting hard anomalies that are difficult to isolate in high-dimensional/non-linear-separable data space, and (ii) notorious algorithmic bias that assigns unexpectedly lower anomaly scores to artefact regions. These issues contribute to high false negative errors. Several iForest extensions are introduced, but they essentially still employ shallow, linear data partition, restricting their power in isolating true anomalies. Therefore, this paper proposes deep isolation …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large Language Model (LLM) has demonstrated significant ability in various Natural Language Processing tasks. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on the phrasing of the task prompt, leading to research on automatic prompt optimization using labeled task data. We reveal that these prompt optimization techniques are vulnerable to distribution shifts such as subpopulation shifts, which are common for LLMs in real-world scenarios such as customer reviews analysis. In this light, we propose a new problem of robust prompt optimization for LLMs against distribution shifts, which requires the prompt optimized over the labeled source group can simultaneously generalize to an unlabeled …

Ensemble-Based Deep Reinforcement Learning For Vehicle Routing Problems Under Distribution Shift, Yuan Jiang, Zhiguang Cao, Yaoxin Wu, Wen Song, Jie Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While performing favourably on the independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) instances, most of the existing neural methods for vehicle routing problems (VRPs) struggle to generalize in the presence of a distribution shift. To tackle this issue, we propose an ensemble-based deep reinforcement learning method for VRPs, which learns a group of diverse sub-policies to cope with various instance distributions. In particular, to prevent convergence of the parameters to the same one, we enforce diversity across sub-policies by leveraging Bootstrap with random initialization. Moreover, we also explicitly pursue inequality between sub-policies by exploiting regularization terms during training to further enhance diversity. …

Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a meta-heuristic algorithm that has been successfully applied to various Combinatorial Optimization Problems (COPs). Traditionally, customizing ACO for a specific problem requires the expert design of knowledge-driven heuristics. In this paper, we propose DeepACO, a generic framework leveraging deep reinforcement learning to automate heuristic designs. DeepACO serves to strengthen the heuristic measures of existing ACO algorithms and dispense with laborious manual design in future ACO applications. As a neural-enhanced meta-heuristic, DeepACO consistently outperforms its ACO counterparts on eight COPs using a single neural model and a single set of hyperparameters. As a Neural Combinatorial Optimization …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) is a fine-grained task of sentiment analysis. To better comprehend long complicated sentences and obtain accurate aspect-specific information, linguistic and commonsense knowledge are generally required in this task. However, most current methods employ complicated and inefficient approaches to incorporate external knowledge, e.g., directly searching the graph nodes. Additionally, the complementarity between external knowledge and linguistic information has not been thoroughly studied. To this end, we propose a knowledge graph augmented network (KGAN), which aims to effectively incorporate external knowledge with explicitly syntactic and contextual information. In particular, KGAN captures the sentiment feature representations from multiple different …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we introduce a macro-micro model for predicting taxi demands. Our model is a composite deep learning model that integrates multiple views. Our network design specifically incorporates the spatial and temporal dependency of taxi or ride-hailing demand, unlike previous papers that also utilize deep learning models. In addition, we propose a hybrid of Long Short-Term Memory Networks and Temporal Convolutional Networks that incorporates real world time series with long sequences. Finally, we introduce a microscopic component that attempts to extract insights revealed by roaming vacant taxis. In our study, we demonstrate that our approach is competitive against a …

Flowpg: Action-Constrained Policy Gradient With Normalizing Flows, Brahmanage Janaka Chathuranga Thilakarathna, Jiajing Ling, Akshat Kumar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Action-constrained reinforcement learning (ACRL) is a popular approach for solving safety-critical and resource-allocation related decision making problems. A major challenge in ACRL is to ensure agent taking a valid action satisfying constraints in each RL step. Commonly used approach of using a projection layer on top of the policy network requires solving an optimization program which can result in longer training time, slow convergence, and zero gradient problem. To address this, first we use a normalizing flow model to learn an invertible, differentiable mapping between the feasible action space and the support of a simple distribution on a latent variable, …

Reinventing the wheel is a detrimental programming practice in software development that frequently results in the introduction of duplicated components. This practice not only leads to increased maintenance and labor costs but also poses a higher risk of propagating bugs throughout the system. Despite numerous issues introduced by duplicated components in software, the identification of component-level clones remains a significant challenge that existing studies struggle to effectively tackle. Specifically, existing methods face two primary limitations that are challenging to overcome: 1) Measuring the similarity between different components presents a challenge due to the significant size differences among them; 2) Identifying …

How Helpful Do Novice Programmers Find The Feedback Of An Automated Repair Tool?, Oka Kurniawan, Christopher M. Poskitt, Ismam Al Hoque, Norman Tiong Seng Lee, Cyrille Jégourel, Nachamma Sockalingam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Immediate feedback has been shown to improve student learning. In programming courses, immediate, automated feedback is typically provided in the form of pre-defined test cases run by a submission platform. While these are excellent for highlighting the presence of logical errors, they do not provide novice programmers enough scaffolding to help them identify where an error is or how to fix it. To address this, several tools have been developed that provide richer feedback in the form of program repairs. Studies of such tools, however, tend to focus more on whether correct repairs can be generated, rather than how novices …

Class participation can be considered as contribution to discussion, attendance, presentations, unsolicited responses, questions, comments, etc. What counts may vary across individual teachers. The more students participate, the less memorization they do, and the more they engage in higher levels of thinking, including interpretation, analysis, and synthesis. However, only a handful of students in many classrooms participate regularly, a phenomenon dubbed as "consolidation of responsibility". This study provides a literature review of inclass participation, as well as pedagogies and technologies that enhance participation. Pedagogies such as active learning, group learning, project-based learning and flipped classroom. Technologies to automate attendance taking, …

Memes are widely used to convey cultural and societal issues and have a significant impact on public opinion. However, little work has been done on understanding and explaining the semantics expressed in multimodal memes. To fill this research gap, we introduce MERMAID, a dataset consisting of 3,633 memes annotated with their entities and relations, and propose a novel MERF pipeline that extracts entities and their relationships in memes. Our framework combines state-of-the-art techniques from natural language processing and computer vision to extract text and image features and infer relationships between entities in memes. We evaluate the proposed framework on a …

Multitasking Scheduling With Shared Processing, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Recently, the problem of multitasking scheduling has raised a lot of interest in the service industries. Hall et al. (Discrete Applied Mathematics, 2016) proposed a shared processing multitasking scheduling model which allows a team to continue to work on the primary tasks while processing the routinely scheduled activities as they occur. With a team being modeled as a single machine, the processing sharing of the machine is achieved by allocating a fraction of the processing capacity to routine jobs and the remaining fraction, which we denote as sharing ratio, to the primary jobs. In this paper, we generalize this model …

A Hybrid Cognitive Model For Machine Agents In Project And Action Teams, Joshua A. Lapso
Theses and Dissertations
High performing human teams transcend complex domain uncertainty by achieving an emergent state of shared cognition, in which knowledge is organized, represented, and distributed to team members for rapid execution. However, this requires that individuals emit perceivable qualities upon which other members can make inferences about intent. In pursuit of future human and machine team studies, this research presents a hybrid cognitive model for machine agents in fully cooperative and semi-cooperative action and project teams. The hybrid cognitive model unifies the characteristics of the shared mental model and transactive memory system. The resultant model facilitates anytime selection over the two …
Federated Active Learning For Network Intrusion Detection, Matthew D. R. Sauer
Federated Active Learning For Network Intrusion Detection, Matthew D. R. Sauer
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses challenges with detecting attacks on computer networks within a Federated Learning (FL) framework, when labeled instances are few. We explore the integration of active learning (AL) and semi-supervised learning (SSL). AL efficiently uses data that would otherwise be wasted or require substantial time for labeling. SSL provides capacity to train models that have a limited amount of labeled data, by utilizing additional unlabeled data that is available. We show how FL combined with AL or SSL can realize a detection system that adapts and trains quickly to new networks, reducing the total amount of data labeling needed. …

Current speech-to-speech translation systems face challenges in effectively translating the nuances of prosody, which plays a pivotal role in conveying speaker intent and stance in dialog. This limitation restricts cross-lingual communication, especially in situations demanding deeper interpersonal understanding. To address this, this research delves into the relationships between prosody and its pragmatic functions, in English and Spanish. First, I discuss a data collection protocol in which bilingual speakers re-enact utterances from an earlier conversation in their other language, then describe an English-Spanish corpus, consisting of 3816 matched utterance pairs. Second, I describe a prosodic dissimilarity metric based on Euclidean distance …

The Use Of Deception In Dementia-Care Robots: Should Robots Tell "White Lies" To Limit Emotional Distress?, Samuel R. Cox, Grace Cheong, Wei Tsang Ooi
ROSA Journal Articles and Publications
With projections of ageing populations and increasing rates of dementia, there is need for professional caregivers. Assistive robots have been proposed as a solution to this, as they can assist people both physically and socially. However, caregivers often need to use acts of deception (such as misdirection or white lies) in order to ensure necessary care is provided while limiting negative impacts on the cared-for such as emotional distress or loss of dignity. We discuss such use of deception, and contextualise their use within robotics.
