Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

Prostate cancer is the 3rd most diagnosed cancer overall. Current screening methods such as the prostate-specific antigen test could result in overdiagonosis and overtreatment while other methods such as a transrectal ultrasonography are invasive. Recent medical advancements have allowed the use of multiparametric MRI — a noninvasive and reliable screening process for prostate cancer. However, assessment would still vary from different professionals introducing subjectivity. While con-volutional neural network has been used in multiple studies to ob-jectively segment prostate lesions, due to the sensitivity of datasets and varying ground-truth established used in these studies, it is not possible to reproduce and …

Due to the requirements on the human operator, it is necessary to know how the operators' abilities are impacted by the amount of autonomy present in the system. There are known effects of autonomous systems on performance, cognitive …

Correlations And Reuse For Fast And Accurate Physically Based Light Transport, Benedikt Bitterli Jan 2022

Correlations And Reuse For Fast And Accurate Physically Based Light Transport, Benedikt Bitterli

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Light transport is the study of the transfer of light between emitters, surfaces, media and sensors. Fast simulations of light transport play a pivotal role in photo-realistic image synthesis, and find many applications today, including predictive manufacturing, machine learning, scientific visualization and the movie industry. In order to accurately reproduce the appearance of real scenes, light transport must closely approximate the physical laws governing the flow of light. Physically based rendering is a set of principles for codifying these laws into a mathematical model, and is the predominant rendering methodology today.

The representational power of this model is limited to …

Secure Authenticated Key Exchange For Enhancing The Security Of Routing Protocol For Low-Power And Lossy Networks, Sarah Mohammed Alzahrani

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The current Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) standard provides three security modes Unsecured Mode (UM), Preinstalled Secure Mode (PSM), and Authenticated Secure Mode (ASM). The PSM and ASM are designed to prevent external routing attacks and specific replay attacks through an optional replay protection mechanism. RPL's PSM mode does not support key replacement when a malicious party obtains the key via differential cryptanalysis since it considers the key to be provided to nodes during the configuration of the network. This thesis presents an approach to implementing a secure authenticated key exchange mechanism for RPL, which ensures …

Design, Analysis, And Optimization Of Traffic Engineering For Software Defined Networks, Mohammed Ibrahim Salman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Network traffic has been growing exponentially due to the rapid development of applications and communications technologies. Conventional routing protocols, such as Open-Shortest Path First (OSPF), do not provide optimal routing and result in weak network resources. Optimal traffic engineering (TE) is not applicable in practice due to operational constraints such as limited memory on the forwarding devices and routes oscillation. Recently, a new way of centralized management of networks enabled by Software-Defined Networking (SDN) made it easy to apply most traffic engineering ideas in practice. \par Toward creating an applicable traffic engineering system, we created a TE simulator for experimenting …

This thesis introduces a novel method to automatically generate fingerprints for WordPress plugins. Our method performs static program analysis using Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs) of WordPress plugins. The generated fingerprints can be used for identifying these plugins using search engines, which have support critical applications such as proactively identifying web servers with vulnerable WordPress plugins. We have used our method to generate fingerprints for over 10,000 WordPress plugins and analyze the resulted fingerprints. Our fingerprints have also revealed 453 websites that are potentially vulnerable. We have also compared fingerprints for vulnerable plugins and those for vulnerability-free plugins.

A Comparison Of Stacking Methods To Estimate Survival Using Residual Lifetime Data From Prevalent Cohort Studies, Zhaoheng Li Jan 2022

A Comparison Of Stacking Methods To Estimate Survival Using Residual Lifetime Data From Prevalent Cohort Studies, Zhaoheng Li

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

Prevalent cohort studies are widely used for their cost-efficiency and convenience. However, in such studies, only the residual lifetime can be observed. Traditionally, researchers rely on self-reported onset times to infer the underlying survival distribution, which may introduce additional bias that confounds downstream analysis. This study compares two stacking procedures and one mixture model approach that uses only residual lifetime data while leveraging the strengths of different estimators. Our simulation results show that the two stacked estimators outperform the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) and the mixture model, allowing robust and accurate estimations for underlying survival distributions.

The technical document is an entity that consists of several essential and interconnected parts, often referred to as modalities. Despite the extensive attention that certain parts have already received, per say the textual information, there are several aspects that severely under researched. Two such modalities are the utility of diagram images and the deep automated understanding of mathematical formulas. Inspired by existing holistic approaches to the deep understanding of technical documents, we develop a novel formal scheme for the modelling of digital diagram images. This extends to a generative framework that allows for the creation of artificial images and their …

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Network intrusion is a well-studied area of cyber security. Current machine learning-based network intrusion detection systems (NIDSs) monitor network data and the patterns within those data but at the cost of presenting significant issues in terms of privacy violations which may threaten end-user privacy. Therefore, to mitigate risk and preserve a balance between security and privacy, it is imperative to protect user privacy with respect to intrusion data. Moreover, cost is a driver of a machine learning-based NIDS because such systems are increasingly being deployed on resource-limited edge devices. To solve these issues, in this paper we propose a NIDS …

In this work, we aim to better understand outsider perspectives of the hacker community through a series of situation based survey questions. By doing this, we hope to gain insight into the overall reputation of hackers from participants in a wide range of technical and non-technical backgrounds. This is important to digital forensics since convicted hackers will be tried by people, each with their own perception of who hackers are. Do cyber crimes and national security issues negatively affect people’s perceptions of hackers? Does hacktivism and information warfare positively affect people’s perception of hackers? Do individual personality factors affect one’s …

Virtual Machine Introspection Tool Design Analysis, Justin Martin Jan 2022

Virtual Machine Introspection Tool Design Analysis, Justin Martin

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Virtual machines are an integral part of today’s computing world. Their use is widespread and applicable in many different computing fields. With virtual machines, the ability to introspect and monitor is often overlooked or left unimplemented. Introspection is used to gather information about the state of virtual machines as they operate. Without introspection, verbose log data and state information is unavailable after unexpected errors or crashes occur. With introspection, this data can be analyzed further to determine the true cause of the unexpected crash or error. Therefore, introspection plays a critical role in portraying accurate historical information regarding the operating …

On-Ice Detection, Classification, Localization And Tracking Of Anthropogenic Acoustic Sources With Machine Learning, Steven J. Whitaker Jan 2022

On-Ice Detection, Classification, Localization And Tracking Of Anthropogenic Acoustic Sources With Machine Learning, Steven J. Whitaker

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Arctic acoustics have been of concern in recent years for the US navy. First-year ice is now the prevalent factor in ice coverage in the Arctic, which changes the previously understood acoustic properties. Due to the ice melting each year, anthropogenic sources in the Arctic region are more common: military exercises, shipping, and tourism. For the navy, it is of interest to detect, classify, localize, and track these sources to have situational awareness of these surroundings. Because the sources are on-water or on-ice, acoustic radiation propagates at a longer distance and so acoustics are the method by which the sources …

This research introduces a new variant of the two-echelon vehicle routing problem (2EVRP) called the two-echelon vehicle routing problem with transshipment nodes and occasional drivers (2EVRP-TN-OD). In addition to city freighters in the second-echelon network, a set of occasional drivers (ODs) is available to serve customers. ODs are the basis of a crowd-shipping system in which crowds with planned trips are willing to take detours to deliver packages in exchange for some compensation. To serve customers, ODs collect the assigned packages at either satellite served by first-echelon trucks or transshipment nodes served by city freighters. We formulate this problem as …

Graph Neural Networks For Malware Classification, Vrinda Malhotra Jan 2022

Graph Neural Networks For Malware Classification, Vrinda Malhotra

Master's Projects

Malware is a growing threat to the digital world. The first step to managing this threat is malware detection and classification. While traditional techniques rely on static or dynamic analysis of malware, the generation of these features requires expert knowledge. Function call graphs (FCGs) consist of program functions as their nodes and their interprocedural calls as their edges, providing a wealth of knowledge that can be utilized to classify malware without feature extraction that requires experts. This project treats malware classification as a graph classification problem, setting node features using the Local Degree Profile (LDP) model and using different graph …

Whole File Chunk Based Deduplication Using Reinforcement Learning, Xincheng Yuan Jan 2022

Whole File Chunk Based Deduplication Using Reinforcement Learning, Xincheng Yuan

Master's Projects

Deduplication is the process of removing replicated data content from storage facilities like online databases, cloud datastore, local file systems, etc., which is commonly performed as part of data preprocessing to eliminate redundant data that requires unnecessary storage spaces and computing power. Deduplication is even more specifically essential for file backup systems since duplicated files will presumably consume more storage space, especially with a short backup period like daily [8]. A common technique in this field involves splitting files into chunks whose hashes can be compared using data structures or techniques like clustering. In this project we explore the possibility …

Poriferal Vision: Deep Transfer Learning-Based Sponge Spicules Identification & Taxonomic Classification, Sudhin Domala Jan 2022

Poriferal Vision: Deep Transfer Learning-Based Sponge Spicules Identification & Taxonomic Classification, Sudhin Domala

Master's Projects

The phylum Porifera includes the aquatic organisms known as sponges. Sponges are classified into four classes: Calcarea, Hexactinellida, Demospongiae, and Homoscleromorpha. Within Demospongiae and Hexactinellida, sponges’ skeletons are needle-like spicules made of silica. With a wide variety of shapes and sizes, these siliceous spicules’ morphology plays a pivotal role in assessing and understanding sponges' taxonomic diversity and evolution. In marine ecosystems, when sponges die their bodies disintegrate over time, but their spicules remain in the sediments as fossilized records that bear ample taxonomic information to reconstruct the evolution of sponge communities and sponge phylogeny.

Traditional methods of identifying spicules from …

Hidden Markov Models With Momentum, Andrew Miller Jan 2022

Hidden Markov Models With Momentum, Andrew Miller

Master's Projects

Momentum is a popular technique for improving convergence rates during gradient descent. In this research, we experiment with adding momentum to the Baum-Welch expectation-maximization algorithm for training Hidden Markov Models. We compare discrete Hidden Markov Models trained with and without momentum on English text and malware opcode data. The effectiveness of momentum is determined by measuring the changes in model score and classification accuracy due to momentum. Experiments indicate that adding momentum to Baum-Welch can reduce the number of iterations required for initial convergence during HMM training, particularly in cases where the model is slow to converge. However, momentum does …
