A Report On The Euphemisms Detection Shared Task, Patrick Lee, Anna Feldman, Jing Peng
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This paper presents The Shared Task on Euphemism Detection for the Third Workshop on Figurative Language Processing (FigLang 2022) held in conjunction with EMNLP 2022. Participants were invited to investigate the euphemism detection task: given input text, identify whether it contains a euphemism. The input data is a corpus of sentences containing potentially euphemistic terms (PETs) collected from the GloWbE corpus (Davies and Fuchs, 2015), and are human-annotated as containing either a euphemistic or literal usage of a PET. In this paper, we present the results and analyze the common themes, methods and findings of the participating teams.
Study On Performance Of Pruned Cnn-Based Classification Models, Mengling Deng
Study On Performance Of Pruned Cnn-Based Classification Models, Mengling Deng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a neural network developed for processing image data. CNNs have been studied extensively and have been used in numerous computer vision tasks such as image classification and segmentation, object detection and recognition, etc. [1] Although, the CNNs-based approaches showed humanlevel performances in these tasks [2], they require heavy computation in both training and inference stages, and the models consist of millions of parameters. This hinders the development and deployment of CNN-based models for real world applications. Neural Network Pruning and Compression techniques have been proposed [3, 4] to reduce the computation complexity of trained CNNs …

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Artificial intelligence (AI) enables continuous monitoring of patients’ health, thus improving the quality of their health care. However, prior studies suggest that individuals resist such innovative technology. In contrast to prior studies that investigate individuals’ decisions for themselves, we focus on family members’ rejection of AI monitoring, as family members play a significant role in health care decisions. Our research investigates competing effects of emotions toward the rejection of AI monitoring for health care. Based on two scenario-based experiments, our study reveals that emotions play a decisive role in family members’ decision making on behalf of their parents. We find …
Defending Against Adversarial Attacks On Medical Imaging Ai Systems, Xin Li
Defending Against Adversarial Attacks On Medical Imaging Ai Systems, Xin Li
Wayne State University Theses
Although deep learning systems trained on medical images have shown state-of-the-art performance in many clinical prediction tasks, recent studies demonstrate that these systems can be fooled by carefully crafted adversarial images. It has raised concerns on the practical deployment of deep learning based medical image classification systems. Although an array of defense techniques have been developed and proved to be effective in computer vision, defending against adversarial attacks on medical images remains largely an uncharted territory due to their unique challenges: crafted adversarial noises added to a highly standardized medical image can make it a hard sample for model to …

Speedster: An Efficient Multi-Party State Channel Via Enclaves, Jinghui Liao
Wayne State University Theses
State channel network is the most popular layer-2 solution to the issues of scalability, high transaction fees, and low transaction throughput of public Blockchain networks. However, the existing works have limitations that curb the wide adoption of the technology, such as the expensive creation and closure of channels, strict synchronization between the main chain and off-chain channels, frozen deposits, and inability to execute multi-party smart contracts. In this work, we present Speedster, an account-based state-channel system that aims to address the above issues. To this end, Speedster leverages the latest development of secure hardware to create dispute-free certified channels that can …

Studies of the photometric variability of astronomical sources from ground-based telescopes must overcome atmospheric extinction effects. Differential photometry by reference to an ensemble of reference stars which closely match the target in terms of magnitude and colour can mitigate these effects. This Paper describes the design, implementation, and operation of a novel algorithm – The Locus Algorithm – which enables optimised differential photometry. The Algorithm is intended to identify, for a given target and observational parameters, the Field of View (FoV) which includes the target and the maximum number of reference stars similar to the target. A collection of objects …

Attempts To Measure Nanosecond Resolved Electronic Dynamics Of Charge Density Wave Phase Transition In 1t-Tas2, Ben Campbell
Honors Theses and Capstones
Scanning tunneling microscopes allow for atomic spatial resolution but the resulting images are necessarily time-averaged and fast dynamics are lost. Pump-probe spectroscopy is a common optical technique used to measure ultrafast electronic dynamics but the integration of optical pump-probe spectroscopy into an STM requires specialized knowledge and equipment. Alternatively, an all-electronic pump-probe spectroscopy technique has recently been developed for use with an STM that replaces the laser pulses of optical pump-probe with voltage pulses. In this paper, I implemented an all-electronic pump-probe scheme into an existing scanning tunneling microscope using an arbitrary waveform generator and a lock-in amplifier. I developed …

Wearables have become commonplace for tracking and making sense of patient lifestyle, wellbeing and health data. Most of this tracking is done by individuals outside of clinical settings, however some data from wearables may be useful in a clinical context. As such, wearables may be considered a prominent source of Patient Generated Health Data (PGHD). Studies have attempted to maximize the use of the data from wearables including integrating with Electronic Health Records (EHRs). However, usually a limited number of wearables are considered for integration and, in many cases, only one brand is investigated. In addition, we find limited studies …

Articles
The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has several advantages over the DC motor and is gradually replacing it in the industry. The dynamics of the PMSM are described by non-linear equations; it is sensitive to unknown external disturbances (load), and its characteristics vary over time. All of these restrictions complicate the control task. Non-linear controls are required to adjust for non-linearities and the drawbacks mentioned above. This paper investigates an interconnection and damping assignment (IDA) passivity-based control (PBC) combined with a non-linear observer approach for the PMSM using the model represented in the dq-frame. The IDA-PBC approach has the inherent …

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
It is well known that arthropods are the most diverse and abundant eukaryotic organisms on the planet. Museum and research collections have huge insect accumulations from expeditions conducted over history that contain specimens of both temporal and spatial value, including hundreds of thousands of species. This biodiversity data is inaccessible to the research community, resulting in a vast amount of “dark data”. The primary objective of this study is to develop an artificial intelligence-driven system for specimen identification that greatly minimizes the time and expertise required to identify specimens in atypical environments. Successful development will have profound impacts on both …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Most of the web applications require security which in turn requires random numbers. Pseudo-random numbers are required with good statistical properties and efficiency. Use of chaotic map to dynamically perturb another chaotic map that generates the random bit output is introduced in this work. Perturbance is introduced to improvise the chaotic behaviour of a base map and increase the periodicity. PRNG with this architecture is devised to generate random bit sequence from initial keyspace. The statistical properties of newly constructed PRNG are tested with NIST SP 800-22 statistical test suite and were shown to have good randomness. To ensure its …
