The first objective of this book is to define and discuss the meaning of truth in mathematics. We explore logics, both propositional and first-order , and the construction of proofs, both formally and human-targeted. Using the proof tools, this book then explores some very fundamental definitions of mathematics through set theory. This theory is then put in practice in several applications. The particular (but quite widespread) case of equivalence and order relations is studied with detail. Then we introduces sequences and proofs by induction, followed by number theory. Finally, a small introduction to combinatorics is …

Data analytics has tremendous potential to provide targeted benefit in low-resource communities, however the availability of highquality public health data is a significant challenge in developing countries primarily due to non-diligent data collection by community health workers (CHWs). Our use of the word non-diligence here is to emphasize that poor data collection is often not a deliberate action by CHW but arises due to a myriad of factors, sometime beyond the control of the CHW. In this work, we define and test a data collection diligence score. This challenging unlabeled data problem is handled by building upon domain expert’s guidance …

An Exploratory Study Of Social Support Systems To Help Older Adults In Managing Mobile Safety, Tamir Mendel, Debin Gao, David Lo, Eran Toch
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Older adults face increased safety challenges, such as targeted online fraud and phishing, contributing to the growing technological divide between them and younger adults. Social support from family and friends is often the primary way older adults receive help, but it may also lead to reliance on others. We have conducted an exploratory study to investigate older adults' attitudes and experiences related to mobile social support technologies for mobile safety. We interviewed 18 older adults about their existing support and used the think-aloud method to gather data about a prototype for providing social support during mobile safety challenges. Our findings …

The majority of online video contents remain inaccessible to people with visual impairments due to the lack of audio descriptions to depict the video scenes. Content creators have traditionally relied on professionals to author audio descriptions, but their service is costly and not readily-available. We investigate the feasibility of creating more cost-effective audio descriptions that are also of high quality by involving novices. Specifically, we designed, developed, and evaluated ViScene, a web-based collaborative audio description authoring tool that enables a sighted novice author and a reviewer either sighted or blind to interact and contribute to scene descriptions (SDs)—text that can …

In this chapter, we consider which general business problems may be suitable for exploring the utilization of quantum computing and provide a framework for applying quantum computing. The characteristics of quantum computing systems are mapped into business problems to show the potential advantages of quantum computing. The framework shows how quantum computing can be applied in general, and a use case is offered for quantum machine learning (QML) related to the credit ratings of small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).

Disambiguating Mentions Of Api Methods In Stack Overflow Via Type Scoping, Kien Luong, Ferdian Thung, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Stack Overflow is one of the most popular venues for developers to find answers to their API-related questions. However, API mentions in informal text content of Stack Overflow are often ambiguous and thus it could be difficult to find the APIs and learn their usages. Disambiguating these API mentions is not trivial, as an API mention can match with names of APIs from different libraries or even the same one. In this paper, we propose an approach called DATYS to disambiguate API mentions in informal text content of Stack Overflow using type scoping. With type scoping, we consider API methods …

While diverse question answering (QA) datasets have been proposed and contributed significantly to the development of deep learning models for QA tasks, the existing datasets fall short in two aspects. First, we lack QA datasets covering complex questions that involve answers as well as the reasoning processes to get the answers. As a result, the state-of-the-art QA research on numerical reasoning still focuses on simple calculations and does not provide the mathematical expressions or evidences justifying the answers. Second, the QA community has contributed much effort to improving the interpretability of QA models. However, these models fail to explicitly show …

Occluded Person Re-Identification With Single-Scale Global Representations, Cheng Yan, Guansong Pang, Jile Jiao, Xiao Bai, Xuetao Feng, Chunhua Shen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Occluded person re-identification (ReID) aims at re-identifying occluded pedestrians from occluded or holistic images taken across multiple cameras. Current state-of-the-art (SOTA) occluded ReID models rely on some auxiliary modules, including pose estimation, feature pyramid and graph matching modules, to learn multi-scale and/or part-level features to tackle the occlusion challenges. This unfortunately leads to complex ReID models that (i) fail to generalize to challenging occlusions of diverse appearance, shape or size, and (ii) become ineffective in handling non-occluded pedestrians. However, real-world ReID applications typically have highly diverse occlusions and involve a hybrid of occluded and non-occluded pedestrians. To address these two …

Privacy preserving mechanisms are essential for protecting data in IoT environments. This is particularly challenging as IoT environments often contain heterogeneous resource-constrained devices. One method for protecting privacy is to encrypt data with a pattern or metadata. To prevent information leakage, an evaluation using the pattern must be performed before the data can be retrieved. However, the computational costs associated with typical privacy preserving mechanisms can be costly. This makes such methods ill-suited for resource-constrained devices, as the high energy consumption will quickly drain the battery. This work solves this challenging problem by proposing SyLPEnIoT – Symmetric Lightweight Predicate Encryption …
Assessing Generalizability Of Codebert, Xin Zhou, Donggyun Han, David Lo
Assessing Generalizability Of Codebert, Xin Zhou, Donggyun Han, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Pre-trained models like BERT have achieved strong improvements on many natural language processing (NLP) tasks, showing their great generalizability. The success of pre-trained models in NLP inspires pre-trained models for programming language. Recently, CodeBERT, a model for both natural language (NL) and programming language (PL), pre-trained on code search dataset, is proposed. Although promising, CodeBERT has not been evaluated beyond its pre-trained dataset for NL-PL tasks. Also, it has only been shown effective on two tasks that are close in nature to its pre-trained data. This raises two questions: Can CodeBERT generalize beyond its pre-trained data? Can it generalize to …

Non-Local Approximation Properties, Kira Pierce
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This project concerns the approximation properties of a given set where X is a scattered sequence and Ï•(x) = 1/x* ln(1 + x^2 ). Similar approximation sets are commonly used in interpolation problems and are especially helpful due to their Fourier representation. For our work, we will work to prove the following theorem.

Building A More Sustainable And Accessible Internet: Lightweight Web Design With Html And Css, Chelsea Thompto
Assignment Prompts
While the internet has great potential to bring people together, if the internet was a country, it would be the 7th largest energy consumer on the planet. This is set to increase in years to come moving the internet even higher on this list to become the 4th largest energy consumer if it were to be a country. So, as artists and digital citizens it is imperative that we understand how to create and display the content we produce online in ways that are sustainable and accessible.

Employees Breaking Bad With Technology: An Exploratory Analysis Of Human Factors That Drive Cyberspace Insider Threats, Marcus L. Green
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As implementation of computer systems has continued to grow in business contexts, employee-driven cyberspace infractions have also grown in number. Employee cyberspace behaviors have continued to have detrimental effects on company computer systems. Actions that violate company cybersecurity policies can be either malicious or unmalicious. Solutions, by and large, have been electronic and centered on hardware and software. Those proposing solutions have begun to shift their focus to human risk vulnerabilities.
This study was novel in that its focus was identification of individual, cultural, and technological risk factors that drive cyberspace insider threat activities. Identifying factors that reduce insider threat …
Correct Web Service Transactions In The Presence Of Malicious And Misbehaving Transactions, John Thomas Ravan Iii
Correct Web Service Transactions In The Presence Of Malicious And Misbehaving Transactions, John Thomas Ravan Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Concurrent database transactions within a web service environment can cause a variety of problems without the proper concurrency control mechanisms in place. A few of these problems involve data integrity issues, deadlock, and efficiency issues. Even with today’s industry standard solutions to these problems, they have taken a reactive approach rather than proactively preventing these problems from happening. We deliver a solution, based on prediction-based scheduling to ensure consistency while keeping execution time the same or faster than current industry solutions. The first part of this solution involves prototyping and formally proving a prediction-based scheduler.
The prediction-based scheduler leverages a …

Crowdsourced Archiving Of The January 6th Us Capitol Insurrection: An R/Datahoarders Case Study, Edward Miezio Chapman
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The crowdsourced archiving that occurred in the wake of the January 6th US Capitol insurrection exemplifies the potential for agile, collaborative evidence gathering during a crisis situation. This paper studies the r/DataHoarders subcommunity of Reddit and the collective and spontaneous archiving project that users initiated. Users were drawn to the thread out of a desire to contribute to law enforcement efforts, enact punitive justice upon the rioters, engage in public discourse, and preserve information for posterity. They did this by gathering and preserving social media evidence that may have otherwise been lost. I discovered that this constituted a crowdsourced archive …

Explainable Retinal Screening With Self-Management Support To Improve Eye-Health Of Diabetic Population Via Telemedicine, Jannatul Ferdause Tumpa
Dissertations (1934 -)
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one major complication of diabetes and is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Progression of DR and complete vision loss can be prevented by keeping diabetes in control and by early diagnosis through annual eye screenings. However, cost, healthcare disparities, cultural limitations, lack of motivation, etc., are the main barriers against regular screening, especially for a few ethnically and racially minority communities. On the other hand, to well-manage and control diabetes, the diabetic population needs to be physically active and keep their weight healthy. From the perspective of Behavioral Science, Some self-management techniques based on motivational …
Towards More Trustworthy Deep Learning: Accurate, Resilient, And Explainable Countermeasures Against Adversarial Examples, Fei Zuo
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the great achievements made by neural networks on tasks such as image classification, they are brittle and vulnerable to adversarial example (AE) attacks, which are crafted by adding human-imperceptible perturbations to inputs in order that a neural-network-based classifier incorrectly labels them. Along with the prevalence of deep learning techniques, the threat of AEs attracts increasingly attentions since it may lead to serious consequences in some vital applications such as disease diagnosis.
To defeat attacks based on AEs, both detection and defensive techniques attract the research community’s attention. Given an input image, the detection system outputs whether it is an …

Expanding Temperature Sensing For The Orion Bms 2, Samuel J. Parker
Expanding Temperature Sensing For The Orion Bms 2, Samuel J. Parker
University Honors Theses
Formula SAE (FSAE) is an annual collegiate design competition that takes place across the globe. Portland State University’s team, Viking Motorsports, was committed to designing an Electric Vehicle (EV) for the 2021 FSAE competition. The team designed a completely custom lithium-ion cell battery that is managed by an Orion BMS 2 battery management system. The FSAE rulebook requires a robust temperature monitoring system for any EV power supply. The Orion BMS 2 can only directly collect data from eight temperature sensors, which is not enough to meet FSAE regulation. However, the BMS can be configured to monitor many more sensors …

Improving The Performance Of Transportation Networks: A Semi-Centralized Pricing Approach, Zhiguang Cao, Hongliang Guo, Wen Song, Kaizhou Gao, Liujiang Kang, Xuexi Zhang, Qilun Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Improving the performance of transportation network is a crucial task in traffic management. In this paper, we start with a cooperative routing problem, which aims to minimize the chance of road network breakdown. To address this problem, we propose a subgradient method, which can be naturally implemented as a semi-centralized pricing approach. Particularly, each road link adopts the pricing scheme to calculate and adjust the local toll regularly, while the vehicles update their routes to minimize the toll costs by exploiting the global toll information. To prevent the potential oscillation brought by the subgradient method, we introduce a heavy-ball method …
Causal Attention For Unbiased Visual Recognition, Tan Wang, Chang Zhou, Qianru Sun, Hanwang Zhang
Causal Attention For Unbiased Visual Recognition, Tan Wang, Chang Zhou, Qianru Sun, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Attention module does not always help deep models learn causal features that are robust in any confounding context, e.g., a foreground object feature is invariant to different backgrounds. This is because the confounders trick the attention to capture spurious correlations that benefit the prediction when the training and testing data are IID (identical & independent distribution); while harm the prediction when the data are OOD (out-of-distribution). The sole fundamental solution to learn causal attention is by causal intervention, which requires additional annotations of the confounders, e.g., a “dog” model is learned within “grass+dog” and “road+dog” respectively, so the “grass” and …
