Introduction Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is characterized by subtle deficits that functional assessment via informant-report measures may not detect. Sensors can potentially detect deficits in everyday functioning in MCI. This study aims to establish feasibility and acceptability of using sensors in a smart home for performance-based assessments of two instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). Methods Thirty-five older adults (>65 years) performed two IADL tasks in a smart home laboratory equipped with sensors and a web camera. Participants' cognitive states were determined using published criteria including measures of global cognition and comprehensive neuropsychological test batteries. Selected subtasks of the …

Breast cancer poses the greatest threat to human life and especially to women's life. Despite the progress made in data mining technology in recent years, the ability to predict and diagnose such fatal diseases based on gene expression data still reveals a limited prediction performance, which may not be surprising since most of the genes in expression data are believed to be irrelevant or redundant. The dimensionality reduction process may be considered as a crucial step to analyze gene expression data, as it can reduce the high dimensionality of the breast cancer datasets, which may result into a better prediction …
Improved Secure And Low Computation Authentication Protocol For Wireless Body Area Network With Ecc And 2d Hash Chain, Soohyeon Choi
Improved Secure And Low Computation Authentication Protocol For Wireless Body Area Network With Ecc And 2d Hash Chain, Soohyeon Choi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since technologies have been developing rapidly, Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) has emerged as a promising technique for healthcare systems. People can monitor patients’ body condition and collect data remotely and continuously by using WBAN with small and compact wearable sensors. These sensors can be located in, on, and around the patient’s body and measure the patient’s health condition. Afterwards sensor nodes send the data via short-range wireless communication techniques to an intermediate node. The WBANs deal with critical health data, therefore, secure communication within the WBAN is important. There are important criteria in designing a security protocol for a …
Playing Pong Using Q-Learning, Akash Kumar
Playing Pong Using Q-Learning, Akash Kumar
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This thesis involves the use of a reinforcement learning algorithm (RL) called Q-learning to train a Q-agent to play a game of Pong against a near-perfect opponent. Compared to previously related work which trained Pong RL agents by combining Q-learning with deep learning in an algorithm known as Deep Q-Networks, the work presented in this paper takes advantage of known environment constraints of the custom-made Pong environment to train the agent using one-step Q-learning alone. In addition, the thesis explores ways of making the Q-learning more efficient by converting Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) to Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs), …

Quantum computing is an emerging technology paradigm of computing and has the potential to solve computational problems intractable using today’s classical computers or digital technology. Quantum computing is expected to be disruptive for many industries. The power of quantum computing technologies is based on the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, such as quantum superposition, quantum entanglement, or the no-cloning theorem. To build a highly trained and skilled quantum workforce that meets future industry needs, there is a need to introduce quantum concepts early on in K-12 schools since the learning of quantum is a lengthy process. As fundamental quantum concepts derive …

Rapidly developed information technologies (IT) have continuously empowered manufacturing systems and accelerated the evolution of manufacturing system paradigms, and smart manufacturing (SM) has become one of the most promising paradigms. The study of SM has attracted a great deal of attention for researchers in academia and practitioners in industry. However, an obvious fact is that people with different backgrounds have different expectations for SM, and this has led to high diversity, ambiguity, and inconsistency in terms of definitions, reference models, performance matrices, and system design methodologies. It has been found that the state of the art SM research is limited …

Multiple agents with relatively low cost, decentralized control, and robustness have the advantages of completing a foraging task more efficiently than a single advanced robot. Despite many foraging algorithms are efficient in multiple robot systems, most are pre-designed or not very adaptive to different environments since they have to evolve the parameters of the foraging algorithm in each different environment. Besides, designing an efficient collision avoidance strategy for multiple agents is a challenge. Addressing these issues, we introduce the multi-actor-attention-critic(MAAC) reinforcement learning method into the multiple foraging agents. We train the foraging strategy for multiple simulated agents. We compare our …

Cancer tumor prediction and diagnosis at an early stage has become a necessity in cancer research, as it provides an increase in the treatment success chances. Recently, DNA microarray technology became a powerful tool for cancer identification, that can analyze the expression level of a different and huge number of genes simultaneously. In microarray data, the large genes number versus a few records may affect the prediction performance. In order to handle this "curse of dimensionality” constraint of microarray dataset while improving the cancer identification performance, a dimensional reduction phase is necessary. In this paper, we proposed a framework that …

Soda: An Open-Source Library For Visualizing Biological Sequence Annotation, Jack W. Roddy, Travis J. Wheeler
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Genome annotation is the process of identifying and labeling known genetic sequences or features within a genome. Across the various subfields within modern molecular biology, there is a common need for the visualization of such annotations. Genomic data is often visualized on web browser platforms, providing users with easy access to visualization tools without the need for installing any software or, in many cases, underlying datasets. While there exists a broad range of web-based visualization tools, there is, to my knowledge, no lightweight, modern library tailored towards the visualization of genomic data. Instead, developers charged with the task of producing …

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The problem of the increase in the volume of fake news and its widespread over social media has gained massive attention as most of the population seeks social media for daily news diet. Humans are equally responsible for the surge of fake news spread. Thus, it is imperative to understand people’s behavior when they decide to share real and fake news items on social media. In an attempt to do so, we performed an analysis on data collected through a survey where participants (n= 363) were asked whether they were willing to share the given news item on their social …
Estimating Heading From Optic Flow With Neural Networks, Natalie T. Maus
Estimating Heading From Optic Flow With Neural Networks, Natalie T. Maus
Honors Theses
Humans have a remarkable ability to estimate their direction of self-motion, or heading, based on visual input stimulus (optic flow). Machines, on the other hand, have a difficult time with this task, especially when flow is introduced that is inconsistent with the motion of the observer. For example, when moving objects enter the field of view, their motion provides inconsistent flow data which often disrupts heading estimates of current heading estimation models. We investigate the ability of neural networks to estimate heading from optic flow data and the limitations of these models when different variations of inconsistent flow are introduced. …
Convolutional Audio Source Separation Applied To Drum Signal Separation, Marius Orehovschi
Convolutional Audio Source Separation Applied To Drum Signal Separation, Marius Orehovschi
Honors Theses
This study examined the task of drum signal separation from full music mixes via both classical methods (Independent Component Analysis) and a combination of Time-Frequency Binary Masking and Convolutional Neural Networks. The results indicate that classical methods relying on predefined computations do not achieve any meaningful results, while convolutional neural networks can achieve imperfect but musically useful results. Furthermore, neural network performance can be improved by data augmentation via transposition – a technique that can only be applied in the context of drum signal separation.

Automatic Cardioembolic Stroke Prediction Using Clinical Features And Non-Contrast Ct Images, Pasit Jakkrawankul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cardioembolic stroke is a dangerous subtype of ischemic stroke. The patients with this subtype need special treatments to prevent recurrent events. The prevention is vital since only one more event could result in fatal damage. Hence, the classification into the categories of cardioembolic and non-cardioembolic subtypes is essential. We developed a multimodal machine learning model that can integrate the basic clinical information and non-contrast CT images to predict the risk of cardioembolic stroke. Our method reached the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC) of 0.840 by using a dataset of only 227 samples of stroke patients. Besides the …

The production process concerns in ABC manufacturing are failing to meet daily production targets and having low productivities. Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is a method of employing process redesign heuristics to improve an existing production line process using an evaluation approach and fit-gap analysis. A simulation tool is used to model the production process redesign. After adopting the provided approach and conducting the simulation, the company's production productivity and service level increases by about 45 percent. To get the required simulation results, critical measurements such as manufacturing capacity and lead time are used. This research demonstrates the redesign production process …

Information Architecture For A Chemical Modeling Knowledge Graph, Adam R. Luxon
Theses and Dissertations
Machine learning models for chemical property predictions are high dimension design challenges spanning multiple disciplines. Free and open-source software libraries have streamlined the model implementation process, but the design complexity remains. In order better navigate and understand the machine learning design space, model information needs to be organized and contextualized. In this work, instances of chemical property models and their associated parameters were stored in a Neo4j property graph database. Machine learning model instances were created with permutations of dataset, learning algorithm, molecular featurization, data scaling, data splitting, hyperparameters, and hyperparameter optimization techniques. The resulting graph contains over 83,000 nodes …
Reliable And Interpretable Machine Learning For Modeling Physical And Cyber Systems, Daniel L. Marino Lizarazo
Reliable And Interpretable Machine Learning For Modeling Physical And Cyber Systems, Daniel L. Marino Lizarazo
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decade, Machine Learning (ML) research has predominantly focused on building extremely complex models in order to improve predictive performance. The idea was that performance can be improved by adding complexity to the models. This approach proved to be successful in creating models that can approximate highly complex relationships while taking advantage of large datasets. However, this approach led to extremely complex black-box models that lack reliability and are difficult to interpret. By lack of reliability, we specifically refer to the lack of consistent (unpredictable) behavior in situations outside the training data. Lack of interpretability refers to the …

Pain in sickle cell disease (SCD) is often associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and high healthcare costs. The standard method for predicting the absence, presence, and intensity of pain has long been self-report. However, medical providers struggle to manage patients based on subjective pain reports correctly and pain medications often lead to further difficulties in patient communication as they may cause sedation and sleepiness. Recent studies have shown that objective physiological measures can predict subjective self-reported pain scores for inpatient visits using machine learning (ML) techniques. In this study, we evaluate the generalizability of ML techniques to data collected from …

One way of accomplishing (re)usability is through the principled use (i.e., using a structured development methodology) of a schema that describes and documents the relations between concepts in the knowledge graph. With respect to accessibility and persistence, one can consider exposing a SPARQL endpoint and allowing interested parties to query against it. While this is a very exible approach, it makes it difficult to explore the data. On the other hand, one could consider exposing data through a framework such as Wikibase. In this paper, …

Cryptography is one of the basic phenomena of security systems. However, some of the widely used publickey cryptography algorithms can be broken by using quantum computers. Therefore, many postquantum cryptography algorithms are proposed in recent years to handle this issue. NTRU (Nth degree truncated polynomial ring units) is one of the most important of these quantum-safe algorithms. Besides the importance of cryptography algorithms, the architecture where they are implemented is also essential. In this study, we developed an NTRU public key cryptosystem application and designed several processors to compare them in many aspects. We address two different architectures in this …

History testifies that there is a dialectic relationship between humans and technology. Especially during the last couple of decades, the shipping industry has benefitted from a very extended number of advanced technology innovations. Today, all systems supporting the conduct of navigation and the various information technology (IT) applications related to ship management activities are heavily reliant upon (almost) real-time information to safely/effectively fulfil their allocated tasks. As a result, truly vast quantities of data -which are often described as “Big Data” in the wider literature- are created and the issue of how to effectively manage all the associated information is …

In order to fulfill the needs of everyday monitoring for healthcare and emergency advice, many HAR systems have been designed [1]. Based on the healthcare purpose, these systems can be implanted into an astronaut’s spacesuit to provide necessary life movement monitoring and healthcare suggestions. Most of these systems use acceleration data-based data record as human activity representation [2,3]. But this data attribute approach has a limitation that makes it impossible to be used as an activity monitoring system for astronavigation. Because an accelerometer senses acceleration by distinguishing acceleration data based on the earth’s gravity offset [4], the accelerometer cannot read …

An autonomous household robot passed a self-awareness test in 2015, proving that the cognitive capabilities of robots are heading towards those of humans. While this is a milestone in AI, it raises questions about legal implications. If robots are progressively developing cognition, it is important to discuss whether they are entitled to justice pursuant to conventional notions of human rights. This paper offers a comprehensive discussion of this complex question through cross-disciplinary scholarly sources from computer science, ethics, and law. The computer science perspective dissects hardware and software of robots to unveil whether human behavior can be efficiently replicated. The …

Security patterns are proven solutions to recurring problems in software development. The growing importance of secure software development has introduced diverse research efforts on security patterns that mostly focused on classification schemes, evolution and evaluation of the patterns. Despite a huge mature history of research and popularity among researchers, security patterns have not fully penetrated software development practices. Besides, software security education has not been benefited by these patterns though a commonly stated motivation is the dissemination of expert knowledge and experience. This is because the patterns lack a simple embodiment to help students learn about vulnerable code, and to …
