Notoriously, immutability is one of the most striking properties of blockchains. As the data contained in blockchains may be compelled to redact for personal and legal reasons, immutability needs to be skillfully broken. In most existing redactable blockchains, fine-grained redaction and effective deletion of harmful data are mutually exclusive. To close the gap, we propose a fine-grained and controllably redactable blockchain with harmful data forced removal. In the scheme, the originator of the transaction has fine-grained control over who can perform the redaction and which portions of the transaction can be redacted. The redaction transaction is performed after collecting enough …

Interactive Search Vs. Automatic Search: An Extensive Study On Video Retrieval, Phuong-Anh Nguyen, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article conducts user evaluation to study the performance difference between interactive and automatic search. Particularly, the study aims to provide empirical insights of how the performance landscape of video search changes, with tens of thousands of concept detectors freely available to exploit for query formulation. We compare three types of search modes: free-to-play (i.e., search from scratch), non-free-to-play (i.e., search by inspecting results provided by automatic search), and automatic search including concept-free and concept-based retrieval paradigms. The study involves a total of 40 participants; each performs interactive search over 15 queries of various difficulty levels using two search modes …
When Function Signature Recovery Meets Compiler Optimization, Yan Lin, Debin Gao
When Function Signature Recovery Meets Compiler Optimization, Yan Lin, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Matching indirect function callees and callers using function signatures recovered from binary executables (number of arguments and argument types) has been proposed to construct a more fine-grained control-flow graph (CFG) to help control-flow integrity (CFI) enforcement. However, various compiler optimizations may violate calling conventions and result in unmatched function signatures. In this paper, we present eight scenarios in which compiler optimizations impact function signature recovery, and report experimental results with 1,344 real-world applications of various optimization levels. Most interestingly, our experiments show that compiler optimizations have both positive and negative impacts on function signature recovery, e.g., its elimination of redundant …

Automatic Solution Summarization For Crash Bugs, Haoye Wang, Xin Xia, David Lo, John C. Grundy, Xinyu Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The causes of software crashes can be hidden anywhere in the source code and development environment. When encountering software crashes, recurring bugs that are discussed on Q&A sites could provide developers with solutions to their crashing problems. However, it is difficult for developers to accurately search for relevant content on search engines, and developers have to spend a lot of manual effort to find the right solution from the returned results. In this paper, we present CRASOLVER, an approach that takes into account both the structural information of crash traces and the knowledge of crash-causing bugs to automatically summarize solutions …

Infercode: Self-Supervised Learning Of Code Representations By Predicting Subtrees, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui, Yijun Yu, Lingxiao Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning code representations has found many uses in software engineering, such as code classification, code search, code comment generation, and bug prediction. Although representations of code in tokens, syntax trees, dependency graphs, paths in trees, or the combinations of their variants have been proposed, existing learning techniques have a major limitation that these models are often trained on datasets labeled for specific downstream tasks, and the code representations may not be suitable for other tasks. Even though some techniques generate representations from unlabeled code, they are far from satisfactory when applied to downstream tasks. To overcome the limitation, this paper …

On The Root Of Trust Identification Problem, Ivan De Oliveira Nunes, Xuhua Ding, Gene Tsudik
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) are becoming ubiquitous and are currently used in many security applications: from personal IoT gadgets to banking and databases. Prominent examples of such architectures are Intel SGX, ARM TrustZone, and Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs). A typical TEE relies on a dynamic Root of Trust (RoT) to provide security services such as code/data confidentiality and integrity, isolated secure software execution, remote attestation, and sensor auditing. Despite their usefulness, there is currently no secure means to determine whether a given security service or task is being performed by the particular RoT within a specific physical device. We refer …

Efficient And Verifiable Proof Of Replication With Fast Fault Localization, Haoran Yuan, Xiaofeng Chen, Guowen Xu, Jianting Ning, Joseph K. Liu, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Proof of replication technique has been widely used to verify whether the cloud service providers (CSPs) store multiple replications of a file with dedicated and unique storage space, which effectively prevents CSPs from colluding and storing only one copy of the file. In this field, many representative schemes have been proposed and applied to various scenarios. However, most of the existing schemes are based on the timing assumption (i.e., the verifier rejects the proof of replication if the prover's response is timeout) and do not explicitly consider the problem of batch verification and fault localization. This will bring unnecessary computational …

Open source software has drawn more and more attention from researchers, developers and companies nowadays. Meanwhile, many Chinese technology companies are embracing open source and choosing to open source their projects. Nevertheless, most previous studies are concentrated on international companies such as Microsoft or Google, while the practical values of open source projects of Chinese technology companies remain unclear. To address this issue, we conduct a mixed-method study to investigate the landscape of projects open sourced by three large Chinese technology companies, namely Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent (BAT). We study the categories and characteristics of open source projects, the developer's …

A Differential Testing Approach For Evaluating Abstract Syntax Tree Mapping Algorithms, Yuanrui Fan, Xin Xia, David Lo, Ahmed E. Hassan, Yuan Wang, Shanping Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Abstract syntax tree (AST) mapping algorithms are widely used to analyze changes in source code. Despite the foundational role of AST mapping algorithms, little effort has been made to evaluate the accuracy of AST mapping algorithms, i.e., the extent to which an algorithm captures the evolution of code. We observe that a program element often has only one best-mapped program element. Based on this observation, we propose a hierarchical approach to automatically compare the similarity of mapped statements and tokens by different algorithms. By performing the comparison, we determine if eachof the compared algorithms generates inaccurate mappings for a statement …

API developers have been working hard to evolve APIs to provide more simple, powerful, and robust API libraries. Although API evolution has been studied for multiple domains, such as Web and Android development, API evolution for deep learning frameworks has not yet been studied. It is not very clear how and why APIs evolve in deep learning frameworks, and yet these are being more and more heavily used in industry. To fill this gap, we conduct a large-scale and in-depth study on the API evolution of Tensorflow 2, which is currently the most popular deep learning framework. We first extract …
Action Selection For Composable Modular Deep Reinforcement Learning, Vaibhav Gupta, Daksh Anand, Praveen Paruchuri, Akshat Kumar
Action Selection For Composable Modular Deep Reinforcement Learning, Vaibhav Gupta, Daksh Anand, Praveen Paruchuri, Akshat Kumar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In modular reinforcement learning (MRL), a complex decision making problem is decomposed into multiple simpler subproblems each solved by a separate module. Often, these subproblems have conflicting goals, and incomparable reward scales. A composable decision making architecture requires that even the modules authored separately with possibly misaligned reward scales can be combined coherently. An arbitrator should consider different module's action preferences to learn effective global action selection. We present a novel framework called GRACIAS that assigns fine-grained importance to the different modules based on their relevance in a given state, and enables composable decision making based on modern deep RL …

Guest Editorial: Non-Iid Outlier Detection In Complex Contexts, Guansong Pang, Fabrizio Angiulli, Mihai Cucuringu, Huan Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Outlier detection, also known as anomaly detection, aims at identifying data instances that are rare or significantly different from the majority of instances. Due to its significance in many critical domains like cybersecurity, fintech, healthcare, public security, and AI safety, outlier detection has been one of the most active research areas in various communities, such as machine learning, data mining, computer vision, and statistics. Traditional outlier-detection techniques generally assume that data are independent and identically distributed (IID), which are significantly challenged in complex contexts where data are actually non-IID. These contexts are ubiquitous in not only graph data, sequence data, …

Automated Query Reformulation For Efficient Search Based On Query Logs From Stack Overflow, Kaibo Cao, Chunyang Chen, Sebastian Baltes, Christoph Treude, Xiang Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As a popular Q&A site for programming, Stack Overflow is a treasure for developers. However, the amount of questions and answers on Stack Overflow make it difficult for developers to efficiently locate the information they are looking for. There are two gaps leading to poor search results: the gap between the user's intention and the textual query, and the semantic gap between the query and the post content. Therefore, developers have to constantly reformulate their queries by correcting misspelled words, adding limitations to certain programming languages or platforms, etc. As query reformulation is tedious for developers, especially for novices, we …

How Do Software Developers Use Github Actions To Automate Their Workflows?, Timothy Kinsman, Mairieli Wessel, Marco Gerosa, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automated tools are frequently used in social coding repositories to perform repetitive activities that are part of the distributed software development process. Recently, GitHub introduced GitHub Actions, a feature providing automated work-flows for repository maintainers. Although several Actions have been built and used by practitioners, relatively little has been done to evaluate them. Understanding and anticipating the effects of adopting such kind of technology is important for planning and management. Our research is the first to investigate how developers use Actions and how several activity indicators change after their adoption. Our results indicate that, although only a small subset of …

Same File, Different Changes: The Potential Of Meta-Maintenance On Github, Hideaki Hata, Raula Kula, Takashi Ishio, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online collaboration platforms such as GitHub have provided software developers with the ability to easily reuse and share code between repositories. With clone-and-own and forking becoming prevalent, maintaining these shared files is important, especially for keeping the most up-to-date version of reused code. Different to related work, we propose the concept of meta-maintenance-i.e., tracking how the same files evolve in different repositories with the aim to provide useful maintenance opportunities to those files. We conduct an exploratory study by analyzing repositories from seven different programming languages to explore the potential of meta-maintenance. Our results indicate that a majority of active …

Incorporating the business perspective into prioritizing technical debt is essential to contribute to decision making in industry. In this paper, we evolve and evaluate a businessdriven approach for technical debt prioritization. The approach was evaluated during a five-months industrial case study with business and technical stakeholders’ active participation. The results show that the approach contributed to aligning business criteria between the business and technical stakeholders. We also observed a downward trend in the amount of technical debt that affects high-value business assets. Moreover, we identified eight business factors that affect the decision making related to the prioritization of technical debt. …

Point defects play a fundamental role in the discovery of new materials due to their strong influence on material properties and behavior. At present, imaging techniques based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are widely employed for characterizing point defects in materials. However, current methods for defect detection predominantly involve visual inspection of TEM images, which is laborious and poses difficulties in materials where defect related contrast is weak or ambiguous. Recent efforts to develop machine learning methods for the detection of point defects in TEM images have focused on supervised methods that require labeled training data that is generated via …
The Effects Of Differences In Vaccination Rates Across Socioeconomic Groups On The Size Of Measles Outbreaks, Elizabeth Hunter, John D. Kelleher
The Effects Of Differences In Vaccination Rates Across Socioeconomic Groups On The Size Of Measles Outbreaks, Elizabeth Hunter, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
Vaccination rates are often presented at the level of a country or region. However, within those areas there might be geographic or demographic pockets that have higher or lower vaccination rates. We use an agent-based model designed to simulate the spread of measles in Irish towns to examine if the effectiveness of vaccination rates to reduce disease at a population level is sensitive to the uniformity of vaccinations across socioeconomic groups. We find that when vaccinations are not applied evenly across socioeconomic groups we see more outbreaks and outbreaks with larger magnitudes.
Ensuring Consistency And Efficiency Of The Incremental Unit Network In A Distributed Architecture, Mir Tahsin Imtiaz
Ensuring Consistency And Efficiency Of The Incremental Unit Network In A Distributed Architecture, Mir Tahsin Imtiaz
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
An incremental system takes advantage of upcoming data as early as possible. In other words, an incremental system processes received data incrementally. Incremental systems can be useful over non-incremental systems to build spoken dialog systems when we are looking for faster and more human-like behavior. For example, human-to-human conversations are incremental, as a listener does not wait for a speaker to finish speaking to begin understanding. Inspired by the fact that Robot-Ready Spoken Dialog Systems must be incremental and need to work distributedly, and IU framework "breaks" in a distributed architecture, I attempted to use the IU network to fulfill …
Comparing A New Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem To Previous Deterministic And Stochastic Algorithms, Edward Friesema
Comparing A New Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem To Previous Deterministic And Stochastic Algorithms, Edward Friesema
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The challenges of drone navigation have driven many advances in the development of autonomous systems. Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles(UAVs) operate in a rapidly changing flight space and have to balance a complex set of constraints and objectives. Many of these objectives can be represented in variations of the classic Traveling Salesman Problem. Numerous approximate solutions to TSP have been proposed over the years, but these approaches have difficulty when adding new constraints that require rapid recalculation of the solution. Either they are fast but do not provide solutions that are close to the optimum, or they provide excellent solutions but they …

An Introduction To Federated Learning And Its Analysis, Manjari Ganapathy
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the onset of the digital era, data privacy is one of the most predominant issues. Decentralized learning is becoming popular as the data can remain within local entities by maintaining privacy. Federated Learning is a decentralized machine learning approach, where multiple clients collaboratively learn a model, without sharing raw data. There are many practical challenges in solving Federated Learning, which include communication set up, data heterogeneity and computational capacity of clients. In this thesis, I explore recent methods of Federated Learning with various settings, such as data distributions and data variability, used in several applications. In addition, I, specifically, …
A Hyperelastic Porous Media Framework For Ionic Polymer-Metal Composites And Characterization Of Transduction Phenomena Via Dimensional Analysis And Nonlinear Regression, Zakai J. Olsen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC) are smart materials that exhibit large deformation in response to small applied voltages, and conversely generate detectable electrical signals in response to mechanical deformations. The study of IPMC materials is a rich field of research, and an interesting intersection of material science, electrochemistry, continuum mechanics, and thermodynamics. Due to their electromechanical and mechanoelectrical transduction capabilities, IPMCs find many applications in robotics, soft robotics, artificial muscles, and biomimetics. This study aims to investigate the dominating physical phenomena that underly the actuation and sensing behavior of IPMC materials. This analysis is made possible by developing a new, hyperelastic …

An In-Depth Look At Learning Computer Language Syntax In A High-Repetition Practice Environment, Stephanie Gonzales
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Students in an introductory computer science course generally have difficulty producing code that follows the arrangement rules known as syntax. Phanon was created to help students practice writing correct code that follows the rules of syntax. Previous research suggests this tool has helped students improve their exam scores and strengthen effectiveness in the course. A study was conducted to observe students while they complete the syntax exercises to find meaningful patterns in the steps the students take to complete an exercise.
Evidence to support high intrinsic load was found throughout the study, which is a measure of difficulty learning a …

Deep Learning And Optimization In Visual Target Tracking, Mohammadreza Javanmardi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Visual tracking is the process of estimating states of a moving object in a dynamic frame sequence. It has been considered as one of the most paramount and challenging topics in computer vision. Although numerous tracking methods have been introduced, developing a robust algorithm that can handle different challenges still remains unsolved. In this dissertation, we introduce four different trackers and evaluate their performance in terms of tracking accuracy on challenging frame sequences. Each of these trackers aims to address the drawbacks of their peers. The first developed method is called a structured multi-task multi-view tracking (SMTMVT) method, which exploits …

Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The choice of academic major and, subsequently, an academic institution has a massive effect on a person’s career. It not only determines their career path but their earning potential, professional happiness, etc. [1] About 40% of people who are admitted to a college do not graduate within six years. Yet, very limited resources are available for students to help make those decisions, and each guidance counselor is responsible for roughly 400 to 900 students across the United States. A tool to help these decisions would benefit students, parents, and guidance counselors.
Various research studies have shown that personality traits affect …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Online social networks provide people with convenient platforms to communicate and share life moments. However, because of the anonymous property of these social media platforms, the cases of online hate speeches are increasing. Hate speech is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as “public speech that expresses hate or encourages violence towards a person or group based on something such as race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation”. Online hate speech has caused serious negative effects to legitimate users, including mental or emotional stress, reputational damage, and fear for one’s safety. To protect legitimate online users, automatically hate speech detection techniques are …

Trust Models And Risk In The Internet Of Things, Jeffrey Hemmes
Regis University Faculty Publications
The Internet of Things (IoT) is envisaged to be a large-scale, massively heterogeneous ecosystem of devices with varying purposes and capabilities. While architectures and frameworks have focused on functionality and performance, security is a critical aspect that must be integrated into system design. This work proposes a method of risk assessment of devices using both trust models and static capability profiles to determine the level of risk each device poses. By combining the concepts of trust and secure device fingerprinting, security mechanisms can be more efficiently allocated across networked IoT devices. Simultaneously, devices can be allowed a greater degree of …
Snore: An Intuitive Algorithm For Accurately Simulating N-Body Orbits, Connor L. Nance
Snore: An Intuitive Algorithm For Accurately Simulating N-Body Orbits, Connor L. Nance
Honors College Theses
We present SnOrE (Simple n-body Orbital Engine), a Python package which aims to simulate n-body orbital systems while simultaneously overcoming early educational barriers of computational astrodynamics for undergraduate physics students. SnOrE exploits rudimentary syntax and commonly-understood Python libraries to accurately simulate orbits of systems, given initial position and momentum conditions of each body in the system. As the n-body problem is as of yet unsolvable theoretically for n ≥ 3, having a numerical perspective on complicated orbits is of great importance to potentially understanding the processes of star and planet formation. Especially significant examples of this research …
