Interactions Between Humans, Virtual Agent Characters And Virtual Avatars, Tamara Griffith
Interactions Between Humans, Virtual Agent Characters And Virtual Avatars, Tamara Griffith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Simulations allow people to experience events as if they were happening in the real world in a way that is safer and less expensive than live training. Despite improvements in realism in simulated environments, one area that still presents a challenge is interpersonal interactions. The subtleties of what makes an interaction rich are difficult to define. We may never fully understand the complexity of human interchanges, however there is value in building on existing research into how individuals react to virtual characters to inform future investments. Virtual characters can either be automated through computational processes, referred to as agents, or …
Design Of Ternary Operations Utilizing Flow-Based Computing, James Pyrich
Design Of Ternary Operations Utilizing Flow-Based Computing, James Pyrich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The development of algorithms and circuit designs that exploit devices that have the ability to persist multiple values will lead to alternative technologies to overcome the issues caused by the end of Dennard scaling and slowing of Moore's Law. Flow-based designs have been used to develop binary adders and multipliers. Data stored on non-volatile memristors are used to direct the flow of current through nanowires arranged in a crossbar. The algorithmic design of the flow-based crossbar is fast, compact, and efficient. In this paper, we seek to automate the discovery of flow-based designs of ternary circuits utilizing memristive crossbars.
Towards Scalable Network Traffic Measurement With Sketches, Rhongho Jang
Towards Scalable Network Traffic Measurement With Sketches, Rhongho Jang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Driven by the ever-increasing data volume through the Internet, the per-port speed of network devices reached 400 Gbps, and high-end switches are capable of processing 25.6 Tbps of network traffic. To improve the efficiency and security of the network, network traffic measurement becomes more important than ever. For fast and accurate traffic measurement, managing an accurate working set of active flows (WSAF) at line rates is a key challenge. WSAF is usually located in high-speed but expensive memories, such as TCAM or SRAM, and thus their capacity is quite limited. To scale up the per-flow measurement, we pursue three thrusts. …

Calibration For A Hybrid Mimo Near-Field Imaging System To Mitigate Antennas Effects, Ha Hoang, Zeeshan Ahmed, Matthias John, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann
Conference Papers
A calibration method for a high-resolution hybrid MIMO turntable radar imaging system is presented. A line of small metal balls is used in the calibration process to measure the position shift caused by undesired effects of the antennas. The unwanted effects in the near-field antenna response are analysed and significantly mitigated based on the referential features of the MIMO configuration.

Confusion Detection From Facial Expression Using Deep Neural Network, Nun Vanichkul
Confusion Detection From Facial Expression Using Deep Neural Network, Nun Vanichkul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Confusion is the most frequently observed emotion in daily life and can greatly affect the effectiveness and efficiency of communication. Detecting the confusion from learners and resolving timely is critical for achieving successful teaching in education. Most Facial Expression Recognition (FER) research works focus only on detecting six basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise. Even though the confusion detection problem gains more attention from researchers recently, analysis of both spatial and temporal information with sufficient data is still short. In this study, we present a spatial-temporal network for confusion detection on video level which was trained on …

Computer-Assisted Coloring-Graph Generation And Structural Analysis, Wesley Su
Computer-Assisted Coloring-Graph Generation And Structural Analysis, Wesley Su
Honors Theses
Graphs are a well studied construction in discrete math, with one of the most common areas of study being graph coloring. The graph coloring problem asks for a color to be assigned to each vertex in a graph such that no two adjacent vertices share a color. An assignment of k colors that meets these criteria is called a k-coloring. The coloring graph Ck(G) is defined as the graph where every vertex represents a valid k-coloring of graph G and edges exist between colorings that di↵er by one vertex. We call graph G the base graph of the k-coloring graph …
Biasing Medial Axis Rapidly-Exploring Random Trees With Safe Hyperspheres, David Qin
Biasing Medial Axis Rapidly-Exploring Random Trees With Safe Hyperspheres, David Qin
Honors Theses
Motion planning is a challenging and widely researched problem in robotics. Motion planning algorithms aim to not only nd unobstructed paths, but also to construct paths with certain qualities, such as maximally avoiding obstacles to improve path safety. One such solution is a Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree (RRT) variant called Medial Axis RRT that generates the safest possible paths, but does so slowly. This paper introduces a RRT variant called Medial Axis Ball RRT (MABallRRT) that uses the concept of clearance -- a robot's distance from its nearest obstacle -- to efficiently construct a roadmap with safe paths. The safety of …
Fast Medial Axis Sampling For Use In Motion Planning, Hanglin Zhou
Fast Medial Axis Sampling For Use In Motion Planning, Hanglin Zhou
Honors Theses
Motion planning is a difficult but important problem in robotics. Research has tended toward approximations and randomized algorithms, like sampling-based planning. Probabilistic RoadMaps (PRMs) are one common sampling-based planning approach, but they lack safety guarantees. One main approach, Medial Axis PRM (MAPRM) addressed this deficiency by generating robot configurations as far away from the obstacles as possible, but it introduced an extensive computational burden. We present two techniques, Medial Axis Bridge and Medial Axis Spherical Step, to reduce the computational cost of sampling in MAPRM and additionally propose recycling previously computed clearance information to reduce the cost of connection in …

Honors Theses
Reconfiguration problems have been studied and applied to solve problems in various areas, including Math, Computer Science, and Chemistry. Due to the close relatedness between coloring graphs and reconfiguration problems, the connectivity and structure of coloring graphs give valuable information to a solution set of the corresponding reconfiguration problem. In this paper we will discuss 2--connectedness and cut-vertices of coloring graphs, and forbidden structures on a coloring graph wit cut-vertices.

“Cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer that affects women worldwide. Assessment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) through histopathology remains as the standard for absolute determination of cancer. The examination of tissue samples under a microscope requires considerable time and effort from expert pathologists. There is a need to design an automated tool to assist pathologists for digitized histology slide analysis. Pre-cervical cancer is generally determined by examining the CIN which is the growth of atypical cells from the basement membrane (bottom) to the top of the epithelium. It has four grades, including: Normal, CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3. In …
On Predicting Stopping Time Of Human Sequential Decision-Making Using Discounted Satisficing Heuristic, Mounica Devaguptapu
On Predicting Stopping Time Of Human Sequential Decision-Making Using Discounted Satisficing Heuristic, Mounica Devaguptapu
Masters Theses
“Human sequential decision-making involves two essential questions: (i) "what to choose next?", and (ii) "when to stop?". Assuming that the human agents choose an alternative according to their preference order, our goal is to model and learn how human agents choose their stopping time while making sequential decisions. In contrary to traditional assumptions in the literature regarding how humans exhibit satisficing behavior on instantaneous utilities, we assume that humans employ a discounted satisficing heuristic to compute their stopping time, i.e., the human agent stops working if the total accumulated utility goes beyond a dynamic threshold that gets discounted with time. …
Computer Vision Based Deep Learning Models For Cyber Physical Systems, Muhammad Monjurul Karim
Computer Vision Based Deep Learning Models For Cyber Physical Systems, Muhammad Monjurul Karim
Masters Theses
“Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are complex systems that integrate physical systems with their counterpart cyber components to form a close loop solution. Due to the ability of deep learning in providing sensor data-based models for analyzing physical systems, it has received increased interest in the CPS community in recent years. However, developing vision data-based deep learning models for CPSs remains critical since the models heavily rely on intensive, tedious efforts of humans to annotate training data. Besides, most of the models have a high tradeoff between quality and computational cost. This research studies deep learning algorithms to achieve affordable and upgradable …

Image Features For Tuberculosis Classification In Digital Chest Radiographs, Brian Hooper
All Master's Theses
Tuberculosis (TB) is a respiratory disease which affects millions of people each year, accounting for the tenth leading cause of death worldwide, and is especially prevalent in underdeveloped regions where access to adequate medical care may be limited. Analysis of digital chest radiographs (CXRs) is a common and inexpensive method for the diagnosis of TB; however, a trained radiologist is required to interpret the results, and is subject to human error. Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) systems are a promising machine-learning based solution to automate the diagnosis of TB from CXR images. As the dimensionality of a high-resolution CXR image is very …

Toward Efficient Automation Of Interpretable Machine Learning Boosting, Nathan Neuhaus
All Master's Theses
Developing efficient automated methods for Interpretable Machine Learning (IML) is an important and long-term goal in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Currently the Machine Learning landscape is dominated by Neural Networks (NNs) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), models which are often highly accurate. Despite high accuracy, such models are essentially “black boxes” and therefore are too risky for situations like healthcare where real lives are at stake. In such situations, so called “glass-box” models, such as Decision Trees (DTs), Bayesian Networks (BNs), and Logic Relational (LR) models are often preferred, however can succumb to accuracy limitations. Unfortunately, having to choose …

Conference papers
Deep learning based methods based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have seen remarkable success in data synthesis of images and text. This study investigates the use of GANs for the generation of tabular mixed dataset. We apply Wasserstein Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (WCGAN-GP) to the task of generating tabular synthetic data that is indistinguishable from the real data, without incurring information leakage. The performance of WCGAN-GP is compared against both the ground truth datasets and SMOTE using three labelled real-world datasets from different domains. Our results for WCGAN-GP show that the synthetic data preserves distributions and relationships of the real …

Recommendation System For Horticultural Commodities, Lukman Adlin Harahap
Recommendation System For Horticultural Commodities, Lukman Adlin Harahap
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Horticultural commodities commonly have fluctuating prices due to their nature. Seasonality and climate are the main factors that cause their prices to fluctuate. Price instability causes a planning on horticultural cultivation to become difficult. Local farmers would intuitively know the planning by their experience, but this might be too complicated for those farmers who are new or have no experience. Thus, the proposed recommendation system would be able to help the new farmers to set a schedule for horticultural cultivation. The proposed recommendation system consists of three phases: price prediction, commodity recommendation, and cultivation scheduling. A hybrid of Long Short-Term …
