A Framework Of Multi-Dimensional And Multi-Scale Modeling With Applications, Zilong Li
A Framework Of Multi-Dimensional And Multi-Scale Modeling With Applications, Zilong Li
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, a framework for multi-dimensional and multi-scale modeling is proposed. The essential idea is based on oriented space curves, which can be represented as a 3D slender object or 1D step parameters. SMILES and Masks provide functionalities that extend slender objects into branched and other objects. We treat the conversion between 1D, 2D, 3D, and 4D representations as data unification. A mathematical analysis of different methods applied to helices (a special type of space curves) is also provided. Computational implementation utilizes Model-ViewController design principles to integrate data unification with graphical visualizations to create a dashboard. Applications of multi-dimensional …

Speech recognition has seen dramatic improvements in the last decade, though those improvements have focused primarily on adult speech. In this paper, we assess child-directed speech recognition and leverage a transfer learning approach to improve child-directed speech recognition by training the recent DeepSpeech2 model on adult data, then apply additional tuning to varied amounts of child speech data. We evaluate our model using the CMU Kids dataset as well as our own recordings of child-directed prompts. The results from our experiment show that even a small amount of child audio data improves significantly over a baseline of adult-only or child-only …

Dementia is a group of irreversible, chronic, and progressive neurodegenerative disorders resulting in impaired memory, communication, and thought processes. In recent years, clinical research advances in brain aging have focused on the earliest clinically detectable stage of incipient dementia, commonly known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Currently, these disorders are diagnosed using a manual analysis of neuropsychological examinations. We measure the feasibility of using the linguistic characteristics of verbal utterances elicited during neuropsychological exams of elderly subjects to distinguish between elderly control groups, people with MCI, people diagnosed with possible Alzheimer's disease (AD), and probable AD. We investigated the performance …

Modular Ontology Modeling Meets Upper Ontologies: The Upper Ontology Alignment Tool, Abhilekha Dalal, Cogan Shimizu, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
We provide an extension to the Protege-based modular on- tology engineering tool CoModIDE, in order to make it possible for ontol- ogy engineers to adhere to traditional ontology modeling processes based on upper or foundational ontologies. As a bridge between the more re- cently proposed modular ontology modeling approach and more classical ones based on foundational ontologies, it enables a best-of-both worlds approach for ontology engineering.

Hierarchical Anomaly Detection For Time Series Data, Ryan E. Sperl
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
With the rise of Big Data and the Internet of Things, there is an increasing availability of large volumes of real-time streaming data. Unusual occurrences in the underlying system will be reflected in these streams, but any human analysis will quickly become out of date. There is a need for automatic analysis of streaming data capable of identifying these anomalous behaviors as they occur, to give ample time to react. In order to handle many high-velocity data streams, detectors must minimize the processing requirements per value. In this thesis, we have developed a novel anomaly detection method which makes use …
Deep Neural Networks For Sentiment Analysis In Tweets With Emoticons, Mutharasu Narayanaperumal
Deep Neural Networks For Sentiment Analysis In Tweets With Emoticons, Mutharasu Narayanaperumal
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Businesses glean meaningful feedback in regard to products and services from social media posts in order to improve the quality of products and services, as well as to meet customer expectations. Sentiment analysis is increasingly being used to help businesses by assigning positive or negative polarity to such posts. Although methods currently exist to determine the polarity of sentiments, such methods are unreliable when posts contain terms that are not typically part of a standard dictionary used for sentiment analysis, such as slang and informal language. This dissertation has aimed to empirically investigate alternative methods to improve the classification accuracy …

Identifying Physicians’ User Experience (Ux) Pain Points In Using Electronic Health Record (Ehr) Systems, Elizabeth Janelle Arceneaux
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Healthcare institutions have migrated to online electronic documentation through the means of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Physicians rely on these systems to support their various clinical work processes, such as entering clinical orders, reviewing essential clinical data, and making important medical decisions using reporting analytics. Although EHR systems appear to be useful and have known advantages over paper records, studies suggest there are persistent user interface design problems that may hinder physician productivity. The study focused on the research problem that EHR system designs create productivity problems for physician users who frequently report that system workflows are inefficient and …
A Covid-19 Induced Shift: From Introducing High School Females To Computing Careers To An Assessment Of Technological Readiness Among Stem Teachers, Jareau Almeyda
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic, this study aimed to explore how exposure to information systems (IS) project management impacts perceptions of computing careers among high school female participants. Given the demand for computing professionals continues to grow, enrollment in some computing disciplines across institutions of higher education have experienced declining enrollments. Studies have shown that one of the reasons high school students do not enroll in computing disciplines is because they perceive computing as difficult, boring, and irrelevant.
As a computing discipline, information systems is focused on developing professionals who are able to integrate technologies into systems that run …
Predictive Accuracy Of Recommender Algorithms, William Blake Noffsinger
Predictive Accuracy Of Recommender Algorithms, William Blake Noffsinger
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Recommender systems present a customized list of items based upon user or item characteristics with the objective of reducing a large number of possible choices to a smaller ranked set most likely to appeal to the user. A variety of algorithms for recommender systems have been developed and refined including applications of deep learning neural networks. Recent research reports point to a need to perform carefully controlled experiments to gain insights about the relative accuracy of different recommender algorithms, because studies evaluating different methods have not used a common set of benchmark data sets, baseline models, and evaluation metrics. The …
Building Something With The Raspberry Pi, Richard Kordel
Building Something With The Raspberry Pi, Richard Kordel
Harrisburg University Presidential Research Grants
In 2017 Ryan Korn and I submitted a grant proposal in the annual Harrisburg University President’s Grant process. Our proposal was to partner with a local high school to install a classroom of 20 Raspberry Pi’s, along with the requisite peripherals. In that classroom students would be challenged to design something that combined programming with physical computing. In our presentation to the school we suggested that this project would give students the opportunity to be “amazing.”
As part of the grant, the top three students would be given scholarships to HU and the top five finalists would all be permitted …

Exploring Artificial Intelligence-Mediated Communication (Aimc) As A Sub-Field Of Communication Studies. A Textual Examination, Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
From the book "Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication," written by John Durham Peters, we understand a notion about developing one’s destiny; people have the freedom to choose multiple paths to follow (Peters, 2012). If we reject this idea, it is also easy for people to come up with distinct explanations. Even though the meaning of the same issues might vary subject to who is interpreting them, the primary concepts can be interpreted as more or less the same. If we study these two--"artificial intelligence" and "communication"- simultaneously, we can assume some characteristics. Thus, this …
Separating Content Selection From Surface Realization In Neural Text Summarization, Logan Lebanoff
Separating Content Selection From Surface Realization In Neural Text Summarization, Logan Lebanoff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Text summarization is a rapidly growing field with many new innovations. End-to-end models using the sequence-to-sequence architecture achieve high scores according to automatic metrics on standard datasets. However, they frequently generate summaries that are factually inconsistent with the original article -- a vital problem to be solved before the summaries can be used in real-world applications. In addition, they are not generalizable to new domains, especially those with few training examples. In this dissertation, we propose to explicitly separate the two steps of content selection and surface realization in summarization. Content selection is the process of choosing important words/phrases/sentences from …

Local Binary Pattern Based Algorithms For The Discrimination And Detection Of Crops And Weeds With Similar Morphologies, Vi Nguyen Thanh Le
Local Binary Pattern Based Algorithms For The Discrimination And Detection Of Crops And Weeds With Similar Morphologies, Vi Nguyen Thanh Le
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In cultivated agricultural fields, weeds are unwanted species that compete with the crop plants for nutrients, water, sunlight and soil, thus constraining their growth. Applying new real-time weed detection and spraying technologies to agriculture would enhance current farming practices, leading to higher crop yields and lower production costs. Various weed detection methods have been developed for Site-Specific Weed Management (SSWM) aimed at maximising the crop yield through efficient control of weeds. Blanket application of herbicide chemicals is currently the most popular weed eradication practice in weed management and weed invasion. However, the excessive use of herbicides has a detrimental impact …

Scalable, Adaptable And Fast Estimation Of Transient Downtime In Virtual Infrastructures Using Convex Decomposition And Sample Path Randomization, Zhiling Guo, Jin Li, Ram Ramesh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Network function virtualization enables efficient cloud-resource planning by virtualizing network services and applications into software running on commodity servers. A cloud-service provider needs to manage and ensure service availability of a network of concurrent virtualized network functions (VNFs). The downtime distribution of a network of VNFs can be estimated using sample-path randomization on the underlying birth–death process. An integrated modeling approach for this purpose is limited by its scalability and computational load because of the high dimensionality of the integrated birth–death process. We propose a generalized convex decomposition of the integrated birth-death process, which transforms the high-dimensional multi-VNF process into …

Pig Pose Estimation Based On Extracted Data Of Mask R-Cnn With Vgg Neural Network For Classifications, Sang Kwan Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper proposes a pig pose estimation operating with Region Proposal Network (RPN) of Mask Region based Convolutional Neural Network (Mask R-CNN) and Visual Geometry Group (VGG) Neural Network (NN). Object pose estimations generates from the associations of different key points. Key points could be explained as specific location of an object such as different joints of a human body or joints of different object. Hourglass network is one of a NN delivering key points of an object. Associating the different key points with the hourglass network results could be represented as instance-level detection [3]. However, the instance-level detection shows …

Novel Computational Approaches For Multidimensional Brain Image Analysis, Harish Raviprakash
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The overall goal of this dissertation is focused on addressing challenging problems in 1D, 2D/3D and 4D neuroimaging by developing novel algorithms that combine signal processing and machine learning techniques. One of these challenging tasks is the accurate localization of the eloquent language cortex in brain resection pre-surgery patients. This is especially important since inaccurate localization can lead to diminshed functionalities and thus, a poor quality of life for the patient. The first part of this dissertation addresses this problem in the case of drug-resistant epileptic patients. We propose a novel machine learning based algorithm to establish an alternate electrical …

Interdisciplinary Cybersecurity For Resilient Cyberdefense, Rachid Ait Maalem Lahcen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Cybersecurity's role is to protect confidentiality, integrity, and availability of enterprise assets. Confidentiality secures data from theft, integrity mitigates modification of data in a malicious way, and availability assures continuation of systems' access and services. However, achieving these goals is difficult due to the mushrooming of various cyber attackers that come from individuals or state actors with motives ranging from ideological, financial, state-sponsored espionage, revenge, or simple curiosity and boredom. The difficulty also lies in the complexity of the cyber layers that are not well studied. Layers that interconnect and require effective communication and collaboration. This effectiveness is still lacking …

The Concept Of Representation Capability Of Databases And Its Application In Is Development, Lishuan Qin, Junkang Feng
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The representation capability of an information system in general and a database in particular seems an important and yet elusive concept, which is concerned with, in our view, how a database ever becomes capable of representing real-world objects accurately or otherwise. To explore how to approach and then define this concept, we explore what is meant and required by the statement that a database connection (i.e., a connection between database constructs such as entities in an Entity-relationship (ER) diagram and relations in a relational schema that are made available by a database) refers to, represents and accurately represents a …

Advances in technology have given us the ability to create and manipulate robots for numerous applications at the molecular scale. At this size, fabrication tool limitations motivate the use of simple robots. The individual control of these simple objects can be infeasible. We investigate a model of robot motion planning, based on global external signals, known as the tilt model. Given a board and initial placement of polyominoes, the board may be tilted in any of the 4 cardinal directions, causing all slidable polyominoes to move maximally in the specified direction until blocked.
We propose a new hierarchy of shapes …

Accurate maps of irrigation are essential for understanding and managing water resources in light of a warming climate. We present a new method for mapping irrigation and apply it to the state of Montana over the years 2000-2019. The method is based on an ensemble of convolutional neural networks that only rely on raw Landsat surface reflectance data. The ensemble of networks method learns to mask clouds and ignore Landsat 7 scan-line failures without supervision, reducing the need for preprocessing data or feature engineering. Unlike other approaches to mapping irrigation, the method doesn't use other mapping products like the Cropland …

Data and information privacy is a major concern of today’s world. More specifically, users’ digital privacy has become one of the most important issues to deal with, as advancements are being made in information sharing technology. An increasing number of users are sharing information through text messages, emails, and social media without proper awareness of privacy threats and their consequences. One approach to prevent the disclosure of private information is to identify them in a conversation and warn the dispatcher before the conveyance happens between the sender and the receiver. Another way of preventing information (sensitive) loss might be to …

This paper addresses the problem of automatically detecting fake news spreaders in social networks such as Twitter. We model the problem as a binary classification task and consider several groups of features, including writing style, word and char n-grams, BERT semantic embedding, and sentiment analysis, which are computed from a set of tweets each user authored. Our proposed approach is evaluated on the dataset made available by the PAN at CLEF 2020 shared task on profiling fake news spreader, which provided labeled data in both English and Spanish. Experimental results show that we can detect fake news spreaders with an …
