Computer science knowledge and skills have become foundational for success in virtually every professional field. As such, productivity in programming and computer science education is of paramount economic and strategic importance for innovation, employment and economic growth. Much of the research around productivity and computer science education has centered around improving notoriously difficult compiler error messages, with a noted surge in new studies in the last decade. In developing an original research plan for this area, this dissertation begins with an examination of the Case for New Instrumentation, draw- ing inspiration from automated data mining innovations and corporate marketing techniques …
A Machine Learning Approach To Predict Retention Of Computer Science Students At University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Sudhir Deshmukh
A Machine Learning Approach To Predict Retention Of Computer Science Students At University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Sudhir Deshmukh
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Student retention is an important measure when in determining student success. Retention refers to the first-time full-time student from previous fall term who returned to the same university for the following fall term. Decline in retention rate have adverse effect on stakeholders, parents, and students view about the institution, revenue generated from tuition cost and obtaining outside funds. In an effort to increase retention rates, universities have started analyzing the factors that correlate with students dropping out. Many universities have identified some of these factors and are working on developing intervention programs to help students to elevate their academic performance …
Blockchain Interoperability With Cross-Chain Stablecoin Payments, Ravi Balvantrai Pandhi
Blockchain Interoperability With Cross-Chain Stablecoin Payments, Ravi Balvantrai Pandhi
Theses and Dissertations
A Peer-to-peer payment system was one of the first proposed applications of blockchain technology. Cryptocurrencies have instead been used as a speculative investment. Stablecoins worth approximately 7 billion USD circulate the cryptocurrency market today, presenting a good case for their use in cryptocurrency payments [2]. Stablecoins have also been issued on a variety of blockchains that operate balkanized from each other. Cross-chain transfer between stablecoins is currently enabled by centralized middlemen. The actions of putting stablecoin transfer in the hands of intermediaries is a path towards centralization of control opposite to the decentralization ideology of blockchains. The inter blockchain transfer …
Iot-Based Solutions For Privacy-Preservation During Interaction With Assistive Robotics, Tahani Ali Albuluwi
Iot-Based Solutions For Privacy-Preservation During Interaction With Assistive Robotics, Tahani Ali Albuluwi
Theses and Dissertations
As mobile robot technologies become pervasive in daily life settings and share physical space with regular people, privacy concerns and complications arise. In particular, the independent and enhanced mobility features of mobile robots raise the potential of privacy violations through continuous surveillance, access to privacy-sensitive locations, or opportunities for witnessing embarrassing situations. In this paper, an IoT-based solution concept called PrivateLoc is proposed to empower end-users with the ability to use smartwatches to restrict robot perception and movement at home dynamically according to end-users’ privacy preferences, conditions, or locations. Thus, descriptive research was conducted using structured surveys with 104 participants, …

Theses and Dissertations
“The internet is no longer a web that we connect to. Instead, its a computerized, networked, and interconnected world that we live in. This is the future, and what were calling the Internet of Things.”- Bruce Schneier, 2019 The Internet of Things is becoming a big part of our lives. Every year there are more devices with the capability to connect on the internet and communicate with each other. Today there are over 400 million IoT devices in the world, and this number is predicted to grow to 1.5 billion devices by 2022 [14]. It is becoming more difficult to …
Polyhedral+Dataflow Graphs, Eddie C. Davis
Polyhedral+Dataflow Graphs, Eddie C. Davis
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This research presents an intermediate compiler representation that is designed for optimization, and emphasizes the temporary storage requirements and execution schedule of a given computation to guide optimization decisions. The representation is expressed as a dataflow graph that describes computational statements and data mappings within the polyhedral compilation model. The targeted applications include both the regular and irregular scientific domains.
The intermediate representation can be integrated into existing compiler infrastructures. A specification language implemented as a domain specific language in C++ describes the graph components and the transformations that can be applied. The visual representation allows users to reason about …
Do You Feel Me?: Learning Language From Humans With Robot Emotional Displays, David Mcneill
Do You Feel Me?: Learning Language From Humans With Robot Emotional Displays, David Mcneill
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
In working towards accomplishing a human-level acquisition and understanding of language, a robot must meet two requirements: the ability to learn words from interactions with its physical environment, and the ability to learn language from people in settings for language use, such as spoken dialogue. The second requirement poses a problem: If a robot is capable of asking a human teacher well-formed questions, it will lead the teacher to provide responses that are too advanced for a robot, which requires simple inputs and feedback to build word-level comprehension.
In a live interactive study, we tested the hypothesis that emotional displays …
Privacy-Preserving Protocol For Atomic Swap Between Blockchains, Kiran Gurung
Privacy-Preserving Protocol For Atomic Swap Between Blockchains, Kiran Gurung
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Atomic swap facilitates fair exchange of cryptocurrencies without the need for a trusted authority. It is regarded as one of the prominent technologies for the cryptocurrency ecosystem, helping to realize the idea of a decentralized blockchain introduced by Bitcoin. However, due to the heterogeneity of the cryptocurrency systems, developing efficient and privacy-preserving atomic swap protocols has proven challenging. In this thesis, we propose a generic framework for atomic swap, called PolySwap, that enables fair ex-change of assets between two heterogeneous sets of blockchains. Our construction 1) does not require a trusted third party, 2) preserves the anonymity of the swap …
Improving Scientist Productivity, Architecture Portability, And Performance In Parflow, Michael Burke
Improving Scientist Productivity, Architecture Portability, And Performance In Parflow, Michael Burke
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Legacy scientific applications represent significant investments by universities, engineers, and researchers and contain valuable implementations of key scientific computations. Over time hardware architectures have changed. Adapting existing code to new architectures is time consuming, expensive, and increases code complexity. The increase in complexity negatively affects the scientific impact of the applications. There is an immediate need to reduce complexity. We propose using abstractions to manage and reduce code complexity, improving scientific impact of applications.
This thesis presents a set of abstractions targeting boundary conditions in iterative solvers. Many scientific applications represent physical phenomena as a set of partial differential equations …
An Alternative Approach To Malware Research, Christopher James May
An Alternative Approach To Malware Research, Christopher James May
Honors Program Theses
Current antivirus programs have design flaws that allow malware to bypass detection. Despite this, malicious parties are usually the ones to find and exploit these flaws before they can be fixed. Therefore, a more proactive approach to malware research should become the new standard. To that end, a new programming language will be designed and created that sheds light on a couple of design flaws in current antivirus models. Fundamentally, antivirus programs have trouble detecting interpreted languages. In addition, it is suspected that antivirus programs are unable to detect an unknown programming language that is injected into another file thus …
Machine Learning Approach For Predicting Cancer Using Gene Expression, Aashi Maharjan
Machine Learning Approach For Predicting Cancer Using Gene Expression, Aashi Maharjan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Cancer has become one of the major factors responsible for global deaths, due to late diagnoses and lack of proper treatment. It involves the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells inside the body, which might spread from one place to different parts. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) sequencing can detect the changes occurring inside cells and helps to analyze the transcriptome of gene expression patterns inside RNA. Machine learning techniques can assist in the prediction of cancer at an early stage, if data is available. The objective of this thesis is to build models and classify different types of cancer. For this …
Studies On Kernels Of Simple Polygons, Jason Mark
Studies On Kernels Of Simple Polygons, Jason Mark
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The kernel of a simple polygon is the set of points in its interior from which all points inside the polygon are visible. We formally establish that for a given convex polygon Q we can always construct a larger simple polygon with many reflex vertices such that Q is the kernel of P. We present algorithms for decomposing a strongly monotone polygon into star-polygons. This decomposition is applied for developing an efficient algorithm for placing a small number of vertical towers to cover the entire given 1.5D terrain. We also present an experimental investigation of the proposed algorithm. The implementation …
Towards Multi-Modal Data Classification, Henry Ng
Towards Multi-Modal Data Classification, Henry Ng
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A feature fusion multi-modal neural network (MMN) is a network that combines different modalities at the feature level to perform a specific task. In this paper, we study the problem of training the fusion procedure for MMN. A recent study has found that training a multi-modal network that incorporates late fusion produces a network that has not learned the proper parameters for feature extraction. These late fusion models perform very well during training but fall short to its single modality counterpart when testing. We hypothesize that jointly trained MMN have weight space that is too large for effective training. To …
Detection Of Snps Associated With Bone Loss Rate By Using Machine Learning Approaches, Avinash Yaganapu
Detection Of Snps Associated With Bone Loss Rate By Using Machine Learning Approaches, Avinash Yaganapu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases seen in postmenopausal women, it decreases the bone density and quality, and later causes bone loss. Generally, bone loss occurs when bone losses its content and become porous: a sponge like substance. In most Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS), researchers perform experiments with genomic data that contains some millions of numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and checks their association with the trait or disease. In this thesis, we performed two separate analyses with 2207 (of bone loss and bone gain) and 645 (of bone loss) instances separately. For predicting the SNPs …

This thesis provides a new platform that instructors can use to create a learning environment for students to learn how to design and implement distributed applications. One possible way to use the platform uses milestones to test the student’s understanding of different concepts. Milestones contain pretests that students can use to test their code. Each milestone focuses on a different concept, including interprocess communication, reliability, and security. A monitor process can be created by the students to provide away for the instructor to see how well the students are learning the concepts by using a monitor process. The platform gives …
Using Imagery To Improve Program Quality In Computer Programming, Joseph S. Ditton
Using Imagery To Improve Program Quality In Computer Programming, Joseph S. Ditton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A common practice in sports is to review film footage of a game. This is done in the hope that individuals on the team or the a team as a whole might learning something about technique, form, process, or strategy that they either did well on or need to improve on. We believe that the benefits of doing this could extend to computer science, and more specifically, the process of writing a computer program. This has never been done in the past, as such this research is exploratory in nature. A new tool called Phanon can record someone writing a …
Retention Of Women In Computer Science: Why Women Persist In Their Computer Science Majors, Katarina Pantic
Retention Of Women In Computer Science: Why Women Persist In Their Computer Science Majors, Katarina Pantic
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Retention of women through graduation in Computer Science (CS) majors is one of the biggest challenges for CS education. Most research in this area focuses on factors influencing attrition rather than why and how women remain committed. The goal of this research study is to understand retention from the perspective of women who persisted in their CS major. Using the theoretical lens of legitimate peripheral participation in communities of practice, I designed and conducted a study that involved focus groups, interviews, journey maps, and experience sampling methods. I found that retention of women in this study was influenced by four …

A Model For The Spread Of Infectious Diseases In A Region, Elizabeth Hunter, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
A Model For The Spread Of Infectious Diseases In A Region, Elizabeth Hunter, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
Articles
In understanding the dynamics of the spread of an infectious disease, it is important to understand how a town’s place in a network of towns within a region will impact how the disease spreads to that town and from that town. In this article, we take a model for the spread of an infectious disease in a single town and scale it up to simulate a region containing multiple towns. The model is validated by looking at how adding additional towns and commuters influences the outbreak in a single town. We then look at how the centrality of a town …
Information Retrieval-Based Optimization Approaches For Requirement Traceability Recovery, Danissa Victoria Rodriguez Caraballo
Information Retrieval-Based Optimization Approaches For Requirement Traceability Recovery, Danissa Victoria Rodriguez Caraballo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Requirements traceability provides support for important software engineering activities. Requirements traceability recovery (RTR) is becoming increasingly important due to the numerous benefits to the overall quality of software. Improving the RTR problem has become an active topic of research for software engineers; researchers have proposed a number of approaches for improving and automating RTR across the requirements and the source code of the system. Textual analysis and Information Retrieval (IR) techniques have been applied to the RTR problem for many years; however, most of the existing IR-based methodologies applied to the RTR problem are semiautomatic or time-consuming, even though many …

A Vertical Cooperation Model To Manage Digital Collections And Institutional Resources, Jack M. Maness, Kim Pham, Fernando Reyes, Jeff Rynhart
University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship
The technology space of the University of Denver Libraries to manage digital collections and institutional resources isn’t relegated to one department on campus – rather, it distributed across a network of collaborators with the skills and expertise to provide that support. The infrastructure, which is comprised of an archival metadata management system (Archivespace), a digital repository (Node.js + ElasticSearch), preservation storage (ArchivesDirect), and a streaming server (Kaltura) is independently but cooperatively managed across IT, library departments and vendors. The coordinated eort of digital curation activities still allows each group to focus on the service they have the most vested interest …

Streaming APIs allow for big data processing of native data structures by providing MapReduce-like operations over these structures. However, unlike traditional big data systems, these data structures typically reside in shared memory accessed by multiple cores. Although popular, this emerging hybrid paradigm opens the door to possibly detrimental behavior, such as thread contention and bugs related to non-execution and non-determinism. This study explores the use and misuse of a popular streaming API, namely, Java 8 Streams. The focus is on how developers decide whether or not to run these operations sequentially or in parallel and bugs both specific and tangential …

Completing A Crowdsourcing Task Instead Of An Assignment; What Do University Students Think?, Javed-Vassilis Khan, Konstantinos Papangelis, Panos Markopoulos
Presentations and other scholarship
University educators actively seek realistic projects to include in their educational activities. However, finding an actually realistic project is not trivial. The rise of crowdsourcing platforms, in which a variety of tasks are offered in the form of an open call, might be an alternative source to help educators scaleup project-based learning. But how do university students feel about executing crowdsourcing tasks instead of their typical assignments? In a study with 24 industrial design students, we investigate students' attitudes on introducing crowdsourcing tasks as assignments. Based on our study we offer four suggestions to universities that consider integrating crowdsourcing tasks …

A Semi-Automated Technique For Transcribing Accurate Crowd Motions, Alexander Fuchsberger, Brian Ricks, Zhicheng Chen
A Semi-Automated Technique For Transcribing Accurate Crowd Motions, Alexander Fuchsberger, Brian Ricks, Zhicheng Chen
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We present a novel technique for transcribing crowds in video scenes that allows extracting the positions of moving objects in video frames. The technique can be used as a more precise alternative to image processing methods, such as background-removal or automated pedestrian detection based on feature extraction and classification. By manually projecting pedestrian actors on a two-dimensional plane and translating screen coordinates to absolute real-world positions using the cross ratio, we provide highly accurate and complete results at the cost of increased processing time. We are able to completely avoid most errors found in other automated annotation techniques, resulting from …

Smart Cities At Play: Lived Experiences, Emerging Forms Of Playfulness, And Problems Of Participation, Konstantinos Papangelis, Jin-Ha Lee, Michael Saker, Catherine Jones
Presentations and other scholarship
In recent years, the notion of smart cities has become the focus of a growing body of research. To date, much of this attention has revolved around the technical aspect, with related concerns including the creation and implementation of suitable smart city technologies. What is notably missing from these discussions, however, is a consideration of the lived experience of supposedly 'smart spaces' and the extent to which physical and digital environments are currently producing new forms of play and playfulness that can be contextualized within this field. With this in mind, the purpose of our workshop is as follows. First, …
An Eye Tracking Replication Study Of A Randomized Controlled Trial On The Effects Of Embedded Computer Language Switching, Cole Peterson
An Eye Tracking Replication Study Of A Randomized Controlled Trial On The Effects Of Embedded Computer Language Switching, Cole Peterson
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The use of multiple programming languages (polyglot programming) during software development is common practice in modern software development. However, not much is known about how the use of these different languages affects developer productivity. The study presented in this thesis replicates a randomized controlled trial that investigates the use of multiple languages in the context of database programming tasks. Participants in our study were given coding tasks written in Java and one of three SQL-like embedded languages: plain SQL in strings, Java methods only, a hybrid embedded language that was more similar to Java. In addition to recording the online …

An Algorithm For Building Language Superfamilies Using Swadesh Lists, Bill Mutabazi
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The main contributions of this thesis are the following: i. Developing an algorithm to generate language families and superfamilies given for each input language a Swadesh list represented using the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) notation. ii. The algorithm is novel in using the Levenshtein distance metric on the IPA representation and in the way it measures overall distance between pairs of Swadesh lists. iii. Building a Swadesh list for the author's native Kinyarwanda language because a Swadesh list could not be found even after an extensive search for it.

A Memory Usage Comparison Between Jitana And Soot, Yuanjiu Hu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
There are several factors that make analyzing Android apps to address dependability and security concerns challenging. These factors include (i) resource efficiency as analysts need to be able to analyze large code-bases to look for issues that can exist in the application code and underlying platform code; (ii) scalability as today’s cybercriminals deploy attacks that may involve many participating apps; and (iii) in many cases, security analysts often rely on dynamic or hybrid analysis techniques to detect and identify the sources of issues.
The underlying principle governing the design of existing program analysis engines is the main cause that prevents …
