Benchmarking Mongodb Multi-Document Transactions In A Sharded Cluster, Tushar Panpaliya May 2020

Benchmarking Mongodb Multi-Document Transactions In A Sharded Cluster, Tushar Panpaliya

Master's Projects

Relational databases like Oracle, MySQL, and Microsoft SQL Server offer trans- action processing as an integral part of their design. These databases have been a primary choice among developers for business-critical workloads that need the highest form of consistency. On the other hand, the distributed nature of NoSQL databases makes them suitable for scenarios needing scalability, faster data access, and flexible schema design. Recent developments in the NoSQL database community show that NoSQL databases have started to incorporate transactions in their drivers to let users work on business-critical scenarios without compromising the power of distributed NoSQL features [1].

How Do Video Games Affect The Brain?, Kenneth Lee

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

Video games are a wildly popular past time in not only America, but other countries as well. Its popularity has done nothing but increase in an exponential fashion, engulfing more and more members of society in its reach; however, its gaining traction in combination with behavioral observations and frequent violent events compelled many to question its effects on those who play them. Some attribute tragedies like recent school shootings to the vast array of First Person Shooter(FPS) games, blaming it for engraining in adolescents’ and adults’ brains a sense of increased aggression and violence. Others praise educational games for stimulating …

Voxel Optimization, Scott Bengs May 2020

Voxel Optimization, Scott Bengs

Student Academic Conference

Voxel Optimization This poster presentation covers optimization for voxels. They can be thought of as three dimensional pixels. Vo coming from volume and xel from pixel. Voxels are just values placed in a 3D grid. Voxels have many interesting uses in the medical and scientific field, especially in geology. One use in computer science is storing world information for video games or graphical applications. One very popular example is Minecraft, a game that allows all of the world to be changed, that uses cube shaped voxels. The first topic will be on the naive approach of building a model from …

Leveraging Model Flexibility And Deep Structure: Non-Parametric And Deep Models For Computer Vision Processes With Applications To Deep Model Compression, Anthony D. Rhodes

Dissertations and Theses

My dissertation presents several new algorithms incorporating non-parametric and deep learning approaches for computer vision and related tasks, including object localization, object tracking and model compression. With respect to object localization, I introduce a method to perform active localization by modeling spatial and other relationships between objects in a coherent "visual situation" using a set of probability distributions. I further refine this approach with the Multipole Density Estimation with Importance Clustering (MIC-Situate) algorithm. Next, I formulate active, "situation" object search as a Bayesian optimization problem using Gaussian Processes. Using my Gaussian Process Context Situation Learning (GP-CL) algorithm, I demonstrate improved …

Primary productivity (PP) has been recently investigated using remote sensing-based models over quite limited geographical areas of the Red Sea. This work sheds light on how phytoplankton and primary production would react to the effects of global warming in the extreme environment of the Red Sea and, hence, illuminates how similar regions may behave in the context of climate variability. study focuses on using satellite observations to conduct an intercomparison of three net primary production (NPP) models--the vertically generalized production model (VGPM), the Eppley-VGPM, and the carbon-based production model (CbPM)--produced over the Red Sea domain for the 1998-2018 time period. …

Reducing Withdrawal And Failure Rates In Introductory Programming With Subgoal Labeled Worked Examples, Lauren E. Margulieux, Briana B. Morrison, Adrienne Decker May 2020

Reducing Withdrawal And Failure Rates In Introductory Programming With Subgoal Labeled Worked Examples, Lauren E. Margulieux, Briana B. Morrison, Adrienne Decker

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Background

Programming a computer is an increasingly valuable skill, but dropout and failure rates in introductory programming courses are regularly as high as 50%. Like many fields, programming requires students to learn complex problem-solving procedures from instructors who tend to have tacit knowledge about low-level procedures that they have automatized. The subgoal learning framework has been used in programming and other fields to breakdown procedural problem solving into smaller pieces that novices can grasp more easily, but it has only been used in short-term interventions. In this study, the subgoal learning framework was implemented throughout a semester-long introductory programming course …

Towards Natural Language Understanding In Text-Based Games, Anthony Snarr

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Text-based games are a very promising space for language-focused machine learning. Within them are huge hurdles in machine learning, like long-term planning and memory, interpretation and generation of natural language, unpredictability, and more. One problem to consider in the realm of natural language interpretation is how to train a machine learning model to understand a text-based game’s objective. This work considers treating this issue like a machine translation problem, where a detailed objective or list of instructions is given as input, and output is a predicted list of actions. This work also explores how a supervised learning system might learn …

The Use Of Digital Millenium Copyright Act To Stifle Speech Through Non-Copyright Related Takedowns, Miller Freeman May 2020

The Use Of Digital Millenium Copyright Act To Stifle Speech Through Non-Copyright Related Takedowns, Miller Freeman

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

In 1998, Congress passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This law provided new methods of protecting copyright in online media. These protections shift the normal judicial process that would stop the publication of infringing materials to private actors: the online platforms. As a result, online platforms receive notices of infringement and issue takedowns of allegedly copyrighted works without the judicial process which normally considers the purpose of the original notice of infringement. In at least one case, discussed in detail below, this has resulted in a notice and takedown against an individual for reasons not related to the purpose of …
