An Update On The Computational Theory Of Hamiltonian Period Functions, Bradley Joseph Klee Dec 2020

An Update On The Computational Theory Of Hamiltonian Period Functions, Bradley Joseph Klee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Lately, state-of-the-art calculation in both physics and mathematics has expanded to include the field of symbolic computing. The technical content of this dissertation centers on a few Creative Telescoping algorithms of our own design (Mathematica implementations are given as a supplement). These algorithms automate analysis of integral period functions at a level of difficulty and detail far beyond what is possible using only pencil and paper (unless, perhaps, you happen to have savant-level mental acuity). We can then optimize analysis in classical physics by using the algorithms to calculate Hamiltonian period functions as solutions to ordinary differential equations. The simple …

A Study Of Multi-Task And Region-Wise Deep Learning For Food Ingredient Recognition, Jingjing Chen, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua, Yu-Gang Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Food recognition has captured numerous research attention for its importance for health-related applications. The existing approaches mostly focus on the categorization of food according to dish names, while ignoring the underlying ingredient composition. In reality, two dishes with the same name do not necessarily share the exact list of ingredients. Therefore, the dishes under the same food category are not mandatorily equal in nutrition content. Nevertheless, due to limited datasets available with ingredient labels, the problem of ingredient recognition is often overlooked. Furthermore, as the number of ingredients is expected to be much less than the number of food categories, …

Security Analysis Of Permission Re-Delegation Vulnerabilities In Android Apps, Biniam Fisseha Demissie, Mariano Ceccato, Lwin Khin Shar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Android platform facilitates reuse of app functionalities by allowing an app to request an action from another app through inter-process communication mechanism. This feature is one of the reasons for the popularity of Android, but it also poses security risks to the end users because malicious, unprivileged apps could exploit this feature to make privileged apps perform privileged actions on behalf of them. In this paper, we investigate the hybrid use of program analysis, genetic algorithm based test generation, natural language processing, machine learning techniques for precise detection of permission re-delegation vulnerabilities in Android apps. Our approach first groups …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud-based deep learning (DL) solutions have been widely used in applications ranging from image recognition to speech recognition. Meanwhile, as commercial software and services, such solutions have raised the need for intellectual property rights protection of the underlying DL models. Watermarking is the mainstream of existing solutions to address this concern, by primarily embedding pre-defined secrets in a model's training process. However, existing efforts almost exclusively focus on detecting whether a target model is pirated, without considering traitor tracing. In this paper, we present SecureMark_DL, which enables a model owner to embed a unique fingerprint for every customer within parameters …

A Targeted Adversarial Attack On Support Vector Machine Using The Boundary Line, Yessenia Rodriguez Dec 2020

A Targeted Adversarial Attack On Support Vector Machine Using The Boundary Line, Yessenia Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a targeted adversarial attack is explored on a Support Vector Machine (SVM). SVM is defined by creating a separating boundary between two classes. Using a target class, any input can be modified to cross the “boundary line,” making the model predict the target class. To limit the modification, a percentage of an image of the target class is used to get several random sections. Using these sections, the input will be moved in small steps closer to the boundary point. The section that took the least number of steps to cause the model to predict the target …

Argumentation Stance Polarity And Intensity Prediction And Its Application For Argumentation Polarization Modeling And Diverse Social Connection Recommendation, Joseph Winstead Sirrianni

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cyber argumentation platforms implement theoretical argumentation structures that promote higher quality argumentation and allow for informative analysis of the discussions. Dr. Liu’s research group has designed and implemented a unique platform called the Intelligent Cyber Argumentation System (ICAS). ICAS structures its discussions into a weighted cyber argumentation graph, which describes the relationships between the different users, their posts in a discussion, the discussion topic, and the various subtopics in a discussion. This platform is unique as it encodes online discussions into weighted cyber argumentation graphs based on the user’s stances toward one another’s arguments and ideas. The resulting weighted cyber …

Improving Binary Classification Using Filtering Based On K-Nn Proximity Graphs, Maher Ala’Raj, Munir Majdalawieh, Maysam F. Abbod

All Works

© 2020, The Author(s). One of the ways of increasing recognition ability in classification problem is removing outlier entries as well as redundant and unnecessary features from training set. Filtering and feature selection can have large impact on classifier accuracy and area under the curve (AUC), as noisy data can confuse classifier and lead it to catch wrong patterns in training data. The common approach in data filtering is using proximity graphs. However, the problem of the optimal filtering parameters selection is still insufficiently researched. In this paper filtering procedure based on k-nearest neighbours proximity graph was used. Filtering parameters …

A Fast And Exact Motif Enumeration Algorithm For Dynamic Networks, Abbas Al-Thaedan Dec 2020

A Fast And Exact Motif Enumeration Algorithm For Dynamic Networks, Abbas Al-Thaedan

Theses and Dissertations

From social to biological networks, prior research in complex networks have demonstrated the importance of the frequency and distribution of different types of motifs to important network functions and properties. A network motif (or graphlet) is defined as a small connected sub-pattern which is over-represented in a network. Network motifs have been widely applied in a wide range of applications, namely biological, social, and technical networks. The counting of the network motif involves expensive enumeration of graph sub-patterns along with the detection of graph isomorphism. In general, network motif detection algorithms are computationally expensive and often designed to operate over …

In 2016, CPS enacted a high school computer science graduation requirement as a means to broaden participation in computer science. ECS is the primary course that supports enactment of this policy. With limited numbers of certified computer science teachers, CPS relied on teachers from a variety of disciplines to teach ECS. The ECS professional development program is designed to prepare teachers from all backgrounds to support student success in ECS. This study examines how the profile of ECS teachers changed and the impact of that change on teachers' experiences with ECS professional development.

A Divide And Conquer With Semi-Global Failover For Software Defined Networks, Kasra Goravanchi Dec 2020

A Divide And Conquer With Semi-Global Failover For Software Defined Networks, Kasra Goravanchi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nowadays, many service providers need to provide many other functions than just a network connectivity. They also need to provide network functions such as network address translation, firewall, encryption, Domain Name Service (DNS), caching, routing and many other services. Usually these functions come with the hardware at the user or customer’s premises. This can increase the revenue of the revenue, but also can cost a lot and also be extremely difficult to maintain. Moreover, it is important to be able to configure the network and later modify the configuration to create fault tolerance and to prepare the system for future …

A Fortified Extension Of The Aes And Its Implementation, Ashby Mullin Dec 2020

A Fortified Extension Of The Aes And Its Implementation, Ashby Mullin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With the advancement of quantum computing (QC), the integrity of cryptography has been called into question. For example, two QC algorithms have been developed that can break asymmetric encryption (i.e., Grover’s, Shor’s), which also poses a threat to symmetric encryption. Asymmetric encryption efforts addressing this threat include lattice-based cryptography, which uses lattice problems to reduce efficiency of cryptanalysis. Symmetric encryption security can be bolstered by increasing the key length, allowing for additional permutations a key could have; known as keyspace. This thesis seeks to expand the keyspace of symmetric encryption in order to create more possibilities. This fortification to the …

Mcst : An App For Patron Awareness Of Covid-19 Safety Measures Instituted By Small Businesses, Jorge Torres

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Small businesses across America are having restrictions placed upon them due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those fortunate enough to remain open now face the challenge of trying to generate enough revenue to stay afloat. Small businesses, with their lack of funds, have resorted to listing their safety precautions on their front door to inform patrons. However, viewing these rules would require patrons to leave their homes. Additionally, there is no consistent set of rules being enforced by the government which is dangerous as some patrons may feel that stricter procedures be in place. These inconsistencies and lack of information can …

Given the increasing popularity of gamified crowdsourcing, the study reported here involved examining determinants of users' continuance intention toward crowdsourcing games, both with longitudinal data and reference to a revised unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). At three time points, data were collected from an online survey about playing crowdsourcing games. Time-lagged regression, cross-temporal correlation, and structural equation modeling were performed to examine determinants of the acceptance of crowdsourcing games. Results indicate that the revised UTAUT2 is applicable to explaining the acceptance of crowdsourcing games. Not only did effort expectancy, hedonic motivation, and social influence directly affect …

Recommender systems are a valuable tool for software engineers. For example, they can provide developers with a ranked list of files likely to contain a bug, or multiple auto-complete suggestions for a given method stub. However, the way these recommender systems interact with developers is often rudimentary—a long list of recommendations only ranked by the model’s confidence. In this vision paper, we lay out our research agenda for re-imagining how recommender systems for software engineering communicate their insights to developers. When issuing recommendations, our aim is to recommend diverse rather than redundant solutions and present them in ways that highlight …

This paper describes the systems our team (AdelaideCyC) has developed for SemEval Task 12 (OffensEval 2020) to detect offensive language in social media. The challenge focuses on three subtasks – offensive language identification (subtask A), offense type identification (subtask B), and offense target identification (subtask C). Our team has participated in all the three subtasks. We have developed machine learning and deep learning-based ensembles of models. We have achieved F1-scores of 0.906, 0.552, and 0.623 in subtask A, B, and C respectively. While our performance scores are promising for subtask A, the results demonstrate that subtask B and C still …

Theory-Inspired Path-Regularized Differential Network Architecture Search, Pan Zhou, Caiming Xiong, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi Dec 2020

Theory-Inspired Path-Regularized Differential Network Architecture Search, Pan Zhou, Caiming Xiong, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite its high search efficiency, differential architecture search (DARTS) often selects network architectures with dominated skip connections which lead to performance degradation. However, theoretical understandings on this issue remain absent, hindering the development of more advanced methods in a principled way. In this work, we solve this problem by theoretically analyzing the effects of various types of operations, e.g. convolution, skip connection and zero operation, to the network optimization. We prove that the architectures with more skip connections can converge faster than the other candidates, and thus are selected by DARTS. This result, for the first time, theoretically and explicitly …

Towards Theoretically Understanding Why Sgd Generalizes Better Than Adam In Deep Learning, Pan Zhou, Jiashi Feng, Chao Ma, Caiming Xiong, Steven C. H. Hoi, Weinan E Dec 2020

Towards Theoretically Understanding Why Sgd Generalizes Better Than Adam In Deep Learning, Pan Zhou, Jiashi Feng, Chao Ma, Caiming Xiong, Steven C. H. Hoi, Weinan E

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It is not clear yet why ADAM-alike adaptive gradient algorithms suffer from worse generalization performance than SGD despite their faster training speed. This work aims to provide understandings on this generalization gap by analyzing their local convergence behaviors. Specifically, we observe the heavy tails of gradient noise in these algorithms. This motivates us to analyze these algorithms through their Lévy-driven stochastic differential equations (SDEs) because of the similar convergence behaviors of an algorithm and its SDE. Then we establish the escaping time of these SDEs from a local basin. The result shows that (1) the escaping time of both SGD …

Algorithms And Hardness Results For Computing Cores Of Markov Chains, Ali Ahmadi, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Amir Kafshdar Goharshady, Tobias Meggendorfer, Roodabeh Safavi, Dorde Zikelic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a Markov chain M = (V,v0,δ), with state space V and a starting state v0, and a probability threshold ϵ, an ϵ-core is a subset C of states that is left with probability at most ϵ. More formally, C ⊆V is an ϵ-core, iff P reach(V\C) ≤ ϵ. Cores have been applied in a wide variety of verification problems over Markov chains, Markov decision processes, and probabilistic programs, as a means of discarding uninteresting and low-probability parts of a probabilistic system and instead being able to focus on the states that are likely to be encountered in a real-world …

Sharper Generalisation Bounds For Pairwise Learning, Yunwen Lei, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft Dec 2020

Sharper Generalisation Bounds For Pairwise Learning, Yunwen Lei, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pairwise learning refers to learning tasks with loss functions depending on a pair of training examples, which includes ranking and metric learning as specific examples. Recently, there has been an increasing amount of attention on the generalization analysis of pairwise learning to understand its practical behavior. However, the existing stability analysis provides suboptimal high-probability generalization bounds. In this paper, we provide a refined stability analysis by developing generalization bounds which can be √nn-times faster than the existing results, where nn is the sample size. This implies excess risk bounds of the order O(n−1/2) (up to a logarithmic factor) for both …

Deep Multi-Task Learning For Depression Detection And Prediction In Longitudinal Data, Guansong Pang, Ngoc Thien Anh Pham, Emma Baker, Rebecca Bentley, Anton Van Den Hengel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Depression is among the most prevalent mental disorders, affecting millions of people of all ages globally. Machine learning techniques have shown effective in enabling automated detection and prediction of depression for early intervention and treatment. However, they are challenged by the relative scarcity of instances of depression in the data. In this work we introduce a novel deep multi-task recurrent neural network to tackle this challenge, in which depression classification is jointly optimized with two auxiliary tasks, namely one-class metric learning and anomaly ranking. The auxiliary tasks introduce an inductive bias that improves the classification model's generalizability on small depression …

Heterogeneous Univariate Outlier Ensembles In Multidimensional Data, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao Dec 2020

Heterogeneous Univariate Outlier Ensembles In Multidimensional Data, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In outlier detection, recent major research has shifted from developing univariate methods to multivariate methods due to the rapid growth of multidimensional data. However, one typical issue of this paradigm shift is that many multidimensional data often mainly contains univariate outliers, in which many features are actually irrelevant. In such cases, multivariate methods are ineffective in identifying such outliers due to the potential biases and the curse of dimensionality brought by irrelevant features. Those univariate outliers might be well detected by applying univariate outlier detectors in individually relevant features. However, it is very challenging to choose a right univariate detector …

Watch Out! Motion Is Blurring The Vision Of Your Deep Neural Networks, Qing Guo, Felix Juefei-Xu, Xiaofei Xie, Lei Ma, Jian Wang, Bing Yu, Wei Feng, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The state-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial examples with additive random noise-like perturbations. While such examples are hardly found in the physical world, the image blurring effect caused by object motion, on the other hand, commonly occurs in practice, making the study of which greatly important especially for the widely adopted real-time image processing tasks (e.g., object detection, tracking). In this paper, we initiate the first step to comprehensively investigate the potential hazards of blur effect for DNN, caused by object motion. We propose a novel adversarial attack method that can generate visually natural motion-blurred adversarial examples, …

Sadt: Syntax-Aware Differential Testing Of Certificate Validation In Ssl/Tls Implementations, Lili Quan, Qianyu Guo, Hongxu Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Xiaohong Li, Yang Liu, Jing Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The security assurance of SSL/TLS critically depends on the correct validation of X.509 certificates. Therefore, it is important to check whether a certificate is correctly validated by the SSL/TLS implementations. Although differential testing has been proven to be effective in finding semantic bugs, it still suffers from the following limitations: (1) The syntax of test cases cannot be correctly guaranteed. (2) Current test cases are not diverse enough to cover more implementation behaviours. This paper tackles these problems by introducing SADT, a novel syntax-aware differential testing framework for evaluating the certificate validation process in SSL/TLS implementations. We first propose a …

Design Of A Two-Echelon Freight Distribution System In An Urban Area Considering Third-Party Logistics And Loading-Unloading Zones, Vincent F. Yu, Winarno, Shih-Wei Lin, Aldy Gunawan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research examines the problem of designing a two-echelon freight distribution system in a dense urban area that considers third-party logistics (TPL) and loading–unloading zones (LUZs). The proposed system takes advantage of outsourcing the last mile deliveries to a TPL provider and utilizing LUZs as temporary intermediate facilities instead of using permanent intermediate facilities to consolidate freight. A mathematical model and a simulated annealing (SA) algorithm are developed to solve the problem. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed SA heuristic are verified by testing it on existing benchmark instances. Computational results show that the performance of the proposed SA …

Enabling Collaborative Video Sensing At The Edge Through Convolutional Sharing, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Wanniarachchige Dhanuja Tharith Wanniarachchi, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While Deep Neural Network (DNN) models have provided remarkable advances in machine vision capabilities, their high computational complexity and model sizes present a formidable roadblock to deployment in AIoT-based sensing applications. In this paper, we propose a novel paradigm by which peer nodes in a network can collaborate to improve their accuracy on person detection, an exemplar machine vision task. The proposed methodology requires no re-training of the DNNs and incurs minimal processing latency as it extracts scene summaries from the collaborators and injects back into DNNs of the reference cameras, on-the-fly. Early results show promise with improvements in recall …

Blockchain-Based Public Auditing And Secure Deduplication With Fair Arbitration, Haoran Yuan, Xiaofeng Chen, Jianfeng Wang, Jiaming Yuan, Hongyang Yan, Willy Susilo Dec 2020

Blockchain-Based Public Auditing And Secure Deduplication With Fair Arbitration, Haoran Yuan, Xiaofeng Chen, Jianfeng Wang, Jiaming Yuan, Hongyang Yan, Willy Susilo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data auditing enables data owners to verify the integrity of their sensitive data stored at an untrusted cloud without retrieving them. This feature has been widely adopted by commercial cloud storage. However, the existing approaches still have some drawbacks. On the one hand, the existing schemes have a defect of fair arbitration, i.e., existing auditing schemes lack an effective method to punish the malicious cloud service provider (CSP) and compensate users whose data integrity is destroyed. On the other hand, a CSP may store redundant and repetitive data. These redundant data inevitably increase management overhead and computational cost during the …

Biometric Face Skintone Data Augmentation Using A Generative Adversarial Network, Rosalin Dash Dec 2020

Biometric Face Skintone Data Augmentation Using A Generative Adversarial Network, Rosalin Dash

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers seek methods to increase the accuracy and efficiency in identifying an individual using facial biometric systems. Factors like skin color, which may affect the accuracy of facial recognition, need to be investigated further. To analyze the impact of race with respect to skin color of face on biometric systems, we focused on generating a dataset with uniformly distributed images of different skin tones while preserving identities. Deep learning neural network architectures like the generative adversarial network (GAN) focus on modifying only certain features of the face like the color of the skin. In our experimental approach, we implemented a …
