Improving Spellchecking For Children: Correction And Design, Brody Downs

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Children commonly use software applications such as search engines and word processors in the classroom environment. However, a major barrier to using these programs successfully is the ability of children to type and spell effectively. While many programs make use of spellcheckers to provide spelling corrections to their users, they are designed for more traditional users (i.e., adults) and have proven inadequate for children. The aims of this work is twofold: first, to address the types of spelling errors children make by researching, developing, and evaluating algorithms to generate and rank candidate spelling suggestions; and second, to evaluate the impact …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The k-means clustering algorithm is considered one of the most powerful and popular data mining algorithms in the research community. However, despite its popularity, the algorithm has certain limitations, including problems associated with random initialization of the centroids which leads to unexpected convergence. Additionally, such a clustering algorithm requires the number of clusters to be defined beforehand, which is responsible for different cluster shapes and outlier effects. A fundamental problem of the k-means algorithm is its inability to handle various data types. This paper provides a structured and synoptic overview of …

An Investigation Into Multi-View Error Correcting Output Code Classifiers Applied To Organ Tissue Classification, Daniel Alvarez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Large amounts of data is being generated constantly each day, so much data that it is difficult to find patterns in order to predict outcomes and make decisions for both humans and machines alike. It would be useful if this data could be simplified using machine learning techniques. For example, biological cell identity is dependent on many factors tied to genetic processes. Such factors include proteins, gene transcription, and gene methylation. Each of these factors are highly complex mechanism with immense amounts of data. Simplifying these can then be helpful in finding patterns in them. Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC) does …

Probabilistic Error Upper Bounds For Distributed Statistical Estimation, Matthew Jin

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

The size of modern datasets has spurred interest in distributed statistical estimation. We consider a scenario in which randomly drawn data is spread across a set of machines, and the task is to provide an estimate for the location parameter from which the data was drawn. We provide a one-shot protocol for computing this estimate which generalizes results from Braverman et al. [2], which provides a protocol under the assumption that the distribution is Gaussian, as well as from Duchi et al. [4], which assumes that the distribution is supported on the compact set [−1,1]. Like that of Braverman et …

Performance Analysis Of Netted Radar Data Fusion Systems, Zhijie Chen, Bin Rao, Yongzhen Li, Zhiwei Zong

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The performance analysis of netted radar data fusion systems was proposed. The principles of two representative radar netting modes (i.e., centralized fusion and distributed fusion) were introduced and the associated capabilities of anti-jamming, anti-stealth, fusion accuracy, fusion discrimination, and communication requirements were quantitatively analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the netting essence is, centralized fusion by using ‘or' rule to complement information and realize trajectory composition whereas distributed fusion by using ‘and' rule to reduce information redundancy and realize discrimination ability. The research can provide some enlightenment for the newly-developed intellective netted radar data fusion systems.
