A Comparative Study Of Recommendation Systems, Ashwini Lokesh
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Recommendation Systems or Recommender Systems have become widely popular due to surge of information at present time and consumer centric environment. Researchers have looked into a wide range of recommendation systems leveraging a wide range of algorithms. This study investigates three popular recommendation systems in existence, Collaborative Filtering, Content-Based Filtering, and Hybrid recommendation system. The famous MovieLens dataset was utilized for the purpose of this study. The evaluation looked into both quantitative and qualitative aspects of the recommendation systems. We found that from both the perspectives, the hybrid recommendation system performs comparatively better than standalone Collaborative Filtering or Content-Based Filtering …

The 2nd 3d Face Alignment In The Wild Challenge (3dfaw-Video): Dense Reconstruction From Video, Rohith Krishnan Pillai, Laszlo Attila Jeni, Huiyuan Yang, Zheng Zhang, Lijun Yin, Jeffrey F. Cohn
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
3D face alignment approaches have strong advantages over 2D with respect to representational power and robustness to illumination and pose. Over the past few years, a number of research groups have made rapid advances in dense 3D alignment from 2D video and obtained impressive results. How these various methods compare is relatively unknown. Previous benchmarks addressed sparse 3D alignment and single image 3D reconstruction. No commonly accepted evaluation protocol exists for dense 3D face reconstruction from video with which to compare them. The 2nd 3D Face Alignment in the Wild from Videos (3DFAW-Video) Challenge extends the previous 3DFAW 2016 competition …
Tracking The 6-Dof Flight Trajectory Of Windborne Debris Using Stereophotogrammetry, Chaman Sabharwal, Yanlin Guo
Tracking The 6-Dof Flight Trajectory Of Windborne Debris Using Stereophotogrammetry, Chaman Sabharwal, Yanlin Guo
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Numerous post-windstorm investigations have reported that windborne debris can cause costly damage to the envelope of buildings in urban areas under strong winds (e.g., during hurricanes or tornados). Thus, understanding the physics of debris flight is of critical importance. Previously developed numerical models describing debris flight physics have not been validated for the complex urban flow environment; such a validation requires experimentally measuring the debris flight trajectory in wind tunnel tests. In this context, this paper proposes a debris measurement algorithm using stereophotogrammetry. This algorithm aims to determine the six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) trajectory and velocity of flying debris, addressing the research …

Evaluation Of Sigfox Lpwan For Sensor-Enabled Homes To Identify At Risk Community Dwelling Seniors, Crys Tan, Hwee-Pink Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It is projected that Singapore will become superaged (where 20% of its population will comprise seniors) by 2025. Although various community programs are available to promote active ageing among seniors who are well, provide befriending services for seniors at risk of isolation and care and support for frail and vulnerable seniors, it is not easy to differentiate between `well' seniors and `at risk' seniors. While privacy-preserving z-wave based sensor-enabled homes have been piloted in 100 homes of seniors living alone and have been successful in the timely detection of at-risk seniors, they have limited scalability due to high costs, reliability …

Automatic Fashion Knowledge Extraction From Social Media, Yunshan Ma, Lizi Liao, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Fashion knowledge plays a pivotal role in helping people in their dressing. In this paper, we present a novel system to automatically harvest fashion knowledge from social media. It unifies three tasks of occasion, person and clothing discovery from multiple modalities of images, texts and metadata. A contextualized fashion concept learning model is applied to leverage the rich contextual information for improving the fashion concept learning performance. At the same time, to counter the label noise within training data, we employ a weak label modeling method to further boost the performance. We build a website to demonstrate the quality of …

Who, Where, And What To Wear?: Extracting Fashion Knowledge From Social Media, Yunshan Ma, Xun Yang, Lizi Liao, Yixin Cao, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Fashion knowledge helps people to dress properly and addresses not only physiological needs of users, but also the demands of social activities and conventions. It usually involves three mutually related aspects of: occasion, person and clothing. However, there are few works focusing on extracting such knowledge, which will greatly benefit many downstream applications, such as fashion recommendation. In this paper, we propose a novel method to automatically harvest fashion knowledge from social media. We unify three tasks of occasion, person and clothing discovery from multiple modalities of images, texts and metadata. For person detection and analysis, we use the off-the-shelf …

Mixed-Dish Recognition With Contextual Relation Networks, Lixi Deng, Jingjing Chen, Qianru Sun, Xiangnan He, Sheng Tang, Zhaoyan Ming, Yongdong Zhang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mixed dish is a food category that contains different dishes mixed in one plate, and is popular in Eastern and Southeast Asia. Recognizing individual dishes in a mixed dish image is important for health related applications, e.g. calculating the nutrition values. However, most existing methods that focus on single dish classification are not applicable to mixed-dish recognition. The new challenge in recognizing mixed-dish images are the complex ingredient combination and severe overlap among different dishes. In order to tackle these problems, we propose a novel approach called contextual relation networks (CR-Nets) that encodes the implicit and explicit contextual relations among …

Towards Generating Transformation Rules Without Examples For Android Api Replacement, Ferdian Thung, Hong Jin Kang, Lingxiao Jiang, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Deprecation of APIs in software libraries is common when library maintainers make changes to a library and will no longer support certain APIs in the future. When deprecation occurs, developers whose programs depend on the APIs need to replace the usages of the deprecated APIs sooner or later. Often times, software documentation specifies which new APIs the developers should use in place of a deprecated API. However, replacing the usages of a deprecated API remains a challenge since developers may not know exactly how to use the new APIs. The developers would first need to understand the API changes before …

Collaborative Online Ranking Algorithms For Multitask Learning, Guangxia Li, Peilin Zhao, Tao Mei, Peng Yang, Yulong Shen, Julian K. Y. Chang, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There are many applications in which it is desirable to rank or order instances that belong to several different but related problems or tasks. Although unique, the individual ranking problem often shares characteristics with other problems in the group. Conventional ranking methods treat each task independently without considering the latent commonalities. In this paper, we study the problem of learning to rank instances that belong to multiple related tasks from the multitask learning perspective. We consider a case in which the information that is learned for a task can be used to enhance the learning of other tasks and propose …

An Accelerated Hierarchical Approach For Object Shape Extraction And Recognition, Mahmoud K. Quweider, Bassam Arshad, Hansheng Lei, Liyu Zhang, Fitratullah Khan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We present a novel automatic supervised object recognition algorithm based on a scale and rotation invariant Fourier descriptors algorithm. The algorithm is hierarchical in nature to capture the inherent intra-contour spatial relationships between the parent and child contours of an object. A set of distance metrics are introduced to go along with the hierarchical model. To test the algorithm, a diverse database of shapes is created and used to train standard classification algorithms, for shape-labeling. The implemented algorithm takes advantage of the multi-threaded architecture and GPU efficient image-processing functions present in OpenCV wherever possible, speeding up the running time and …

Paper-Based Flexible Electrode Using Chemically-Modified Graphene And Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Composites For Electrophysiological Signal Sensing, Md Faruk Hossain, Jae Sang Heo, John Nelson, Insoo Kim
Bioelectrics Publications
Flexible paper-based physiological sensor electrodes were developed using chemically-modified graphene (CG) and carboxylic-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube composites (f@MWCNTs). A solvothermal process with additional treatment was conducted to synthesize CG and f@MWCNTs to make CG-f@MWCNT composites. The composite was sonicated in an appropriate solvent to make a uniform suspension, and then it was drop cast on a nylon membrane in a vacuum filter. A number of batches (0%~35% f@MWCNTs) were prepared to investigate the performance of the physical characteristics. The 25% f@MWCNT-loaded composite showed the best adhesion on the paper substrate. The surface topography and chemical bonding of the proposed CG-f@MWCNT …

A Study Of Existing Cross-Site Scripting Detection And Prevention Techniques Using Xampp And Virtualbox, Jalen Mack, Yen-Hung (Frank) Hu, Mary Ann Hoppa
Virginia Journal of Science
Most operating websites experience a cyber-attack at some point. Cross-site Scripting (XSS) attacks are cited as the top website risk. More than 60 percent of web applications are vulnerable to them, and they ultimately are responsible for over 30 percent of all web application attacks. XSS attacks are complicated, and they often are used in conjunction with social engineering techniques to cause even more damage. Although prevention techniques exist, hackers still find points of vulnerability to launch their attacks. This project explored what XSS attacks are, examples of popular attacks, and ways to detect and prevent them. Using knowledge gained …

Demonstration Of Visible And Near Infrared Raman Spectrometers And Improved Matched Filter Model For Analysis Of Combined Raman Signals, Alexander Matthew Atkinson
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analysis technique that has found applications in fields such as analytical chemistry, planetary sciences, and medical diagnostics. Recent studies have shown that analysis of Raman spectral profiles can be greatly assisted by use of computational models with achievements including high accuracy pure sample classification with imbalanced data sets and detection of ideal sample deviations for pharmaceutical quality control. The adoption of automated methods is a necessary step in streamlining the analysis process as Raman hardware becomes more advanced. Due to limits in the architectures of current machine learning based Raman classification models, transfer from pure …
Computational Analysis Of Antipode Algorithms For The Output Feedback Hopf Algebra, Lance Berlin
Computational Analysis Of Antipode Algorithms For The Output Feedback Hopf Algebra, Lance Berlin
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The feedback interconnection of two systems written in terms of Chen-Fliess series can be described explicitly in terms of the antipode of the output feedback Hopf algebra. At present, there are three known computational approaches to calculating this antipode: the left coproduct method, the right coproduct method, and the derivation method. Each of these algorithms is defined recursively, and thus becomes computationally expensive quite quickly. This motivates the need for a more complete understanding of the algorithmic complexity of these methods, as well as the development of new approaches for determining the Hopf algebra antipode. The main goals of this …
Communication Capability For A Simulation-Based Test And Evaluation Framework For Autonomous Systems, Ntiana Sakioti
Communication Capability For A Simulation-Based Test And Evaluation Framework For Autonomous Systems, Ntiana Sakioti
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The design and testing process for collaborative autonomous systems can be extremely complex and time-consuming, so it is advantageous to begin testing early in the design. A Test & Evaluation (T&E) Framework was previously developed to enable the testing of autonomous software at various levels of mixed reality. The Framework assumes a modular approach to autonomous software development, which introduces the possibility that components are not in the same stage of development. The T&E Framework allows testing to begin early in a simulated environment, with the autonomous software methodically migrating from virtual to augmented to physical environments as component development …

Reachnn: Reachability Analysis Of Neural-Network Controlled Systems, Chao Huang, Jiameng Fan, Wenchao Li, Xin Chen, Qi Zhu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Applying neural networks as controllers in dynamical systems has shown great promises. However, it is critical yet challenging to verify the safety of such control systems with neural-network controllers in the loop. Previous methods for verifying neural network controlled systems are limited to a few specific activation functions. In this work, we propose a new reachability analysis approach based on Bernstein polynomials that can verify neural-network controlled systems with a more general form of activation functions, i.e., as long as they ensure that the neural networks are Lipschitz continuous. Specifically, we consider abstracting feedforward neural networks with Bernstein polynomials for …
On The Yellow Brick Road, A Path To Enterprise Architecture Maturity, Avsharn Bachoo
On The Yellow Brick Road, A Path To Enterprise Architecture Maturity, Avsharn Bachoo
The African Journal of Information Systems
This study concentrated on the relationship between the Enterprise Architecture (EA) maturity of an organization and the business value associated with it in the South African financial services environment. It was developed within the critical realism philosophy, which states that mechanisms generate events by accentuating the underlying EA mechanisms that lead to business value, as well as provide insights into the opportunities and challenges organizations experienced as they progressed to higher levels of maturity. Constructed using the resource-based view of the firm as the underlying theoretical framework, this research examined EA as an intangible resource and maturity as a source …

Factors Influencing Knowledge Transfer In Onshore Information Systems Outsourcing In Ethiopia, Solomon A. Nurye, Alem Molla, Temtim Assefa Desta
The African Journal of Information Systems
Knowledge transfer in onshore information systems (IS) outsourcing projects in Africa is an important but under-researched phenomenon. This study focuses on the client-vendor perspective and examines the factors that influence knowledge transfer in onshore information systems outsourcing in Ethiopia. Conceptually, knowledge-based perspectives of IS outsourcing is used to identify an initial set of factors to frame the empirical study. This is followed by semi-structured interviews with ten project managers. The findings indicate that five key factors, namely mutual absorptive capacity, mutual learning intent, mutual trust, mutual disseminative capacity and project staff turnover influence knowledge transfer in outsourced IS projects. The …
Designing Women: Essentializing Femininity In Ai Linguistics, Ellianie S. Vega
Designing Women: Essentializing Femininity In Ai Linguistics, Ellianie S. Vega
Student Publications
Since the eighties, feminists have considered technology a force capable of subverting sexism because of technology’s ability to produce unbiased logic. Most famously, Donna Haraway’s “A Cyborg Manifesto” posits that the cyborg has the inherent capability to transcend gender because of its removal from social construct and lack of loyalty to the natural world. But while humanoids and artificial intelligence have been imagined as inherently subversive to gender, current artificial intelligence perpetuates gender divides in labor and language as their programmers imbue them with traits considered “feminine.” A majority of 21st century AI and humanoids are programmed to fit female …

Properties, Learning Algorithms, And Applications Of Chain Graphs And Bayesian Hypergraphs, Mohammad Ali Javidian
Theses and Dissertations
Probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) use graphs, either undirected, directed, or mixed, to represent possible dependencies among the variables of a multivariate probability distri- bution. PGMs, such as Bayesian networks and Markov networks, are now widely accepted as a powerful and mature framework for reasoning and decision making under uncertainty in knowledge-based systems. With the increase of their popularity, the range of graphical models being investigated and used has also expanded. Several types of graphs with dif- ferent conditional independence interpretations - also known as Markov properties - have been proposed and used in graphical models.
The graphical structure of a …

Cloud Computing Architecture For Elearning Systems In Secondary Schools In Tanzania, Kennedy F. Mwakisole, Mussa M. Kissaka Dr, Joel S. Mtebe Phd
The African Journal of Information Systems
In recent years, schools have been investing heavily on information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure to implement eLearning systems to enhance the quality of education in secondary schools in Tanzania. The majority of these systems are implemented using a traditional web-based eLearning approach on school premises which is costly and limits usage due to lack of scalability and flexibility. Consequently, many schools have started adopting cloud computing as a solution. However, this adaption depends on well-defined cloud eLearning architecture. This study proposed cloud architecture for implementing an eLearning system in secondary schools in Tanzania by adopting various layers proposed in …
