What Do You Mean? Research In The Age Of Machines, Arthur J. Boston
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
What Do You Mean?” was an undeniable bop of its era in which Justin Bieber explores the ambiguities of romantic communication. (I pinky promise this will soon make sense for scholarly communication librarians interested in artificial intelligence [AI].) When the single hit airwaves in 2015, there was a meta-debate over what Bieber meant to add to public discourse with lyrics like “What do you mean? Oh, oh, when you nod your head yes, but you wanna say no.” It is unlikely Bieber had consent culture in mind, but the failure of his songwriting team to take into account that some …

Blended Root Finding Algorithm Outperforms Bisection And Regula Falsi Algorithms, Chaman Sabharwal
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Finding the roots of an equation is a fundamental problem in various fields, including numerical computing, social and physical sciences. Numerical techniques are used when an analytic solution is not available. There is not a single algorithm that works best for every function. We designed and implemented a new algorithm that is a dynamic blend of the bisection and regula falsi algorithms. The implementation results validate that the new algorithm outperforms both bisection and regula falsi algorithms. It is also observed that the new algorithm outperforms the secant algorithm and the Newton-Raphson algorithm because the new algorithm requires fewer computational …

Architectural and technological trends of systems used for scientific computing call for a significant reduction of scientific data sets that are composed mainly of floating-point data. This article surveys and presents experimental results of currently identified use cases of generic lossy compression to address the different limitations of scientific computing systems. The article shows from a collection of experiments run on parallel systems of a leadership facility that lossy data compression not only can reduce the footprint of scientific data sets on storage but also can reduce I/O and checkpoint/restart times, accelerate computation, and even allow significantly larger problems to …

Automatic Recall Of Software Lessons Learned For Software Project Managers, Tamer Mohamed Abdellatif Mohamed, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Danny Ho
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Context: Lessons learned (LL) records constitute the software organization memory of successes and failures. LL are recorded within the organization repository for future reference to optimize planning, gain experience, and elevate market competitiveness. However, manually searching this repository is a daunting task, so it is often disregarded. This can lead to the repetition of previous mistakes or even missing potential opportunities. This, in turn, can negatively affect the organization’s profitability and competitiveness.
Objective: We aim to present a novel solution that provides an automatic process to recall relevant LL and to push those LL to project managers. This will dramatically …

Machine learning models have successfully been applied to challenges in applied in biology, medicine, finance, physics, and other fields. With modern software it is easy to train even a complex model that fits the training data and results in high accuracy on test set. However, problems often arise when models are confronted with the real-world data. This paper describes methodology and tools for model-agnostic auditing. It provides functinos for assessing and comparing the goodness of fit and performance of models. In addition, the package may be used for analysis of the similarity of residuals and for identification of outliers and …
Light-Field Style Transfer, David Marvin Hart
Light-Field Style Transfer, David Marvin Hart
Theses and Dissertations
For many years, light fields have been a unique way of capturing a scene. By using a particular set of optics, a light field camera is able to, in a single moment, take images of the same scene from multiple perspectives. These perspectives can be used to calculate the scene geometry and allow for effects not possible with standard photographs, such as refocus and the creation of novel views.Neural style transfer is the process of training a neural network to render photographs in the style of a particular painting or piece of art. This is a simple process for a …

Collective Representation Learning On Spatiotemporal Heterogeneous Information Networks, Dakshak Keerthi Chandra, Pengyang Wang, Jennifer Leopold, Yanjie Fu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Representation learning is a technique that is used to capture the underlying latent features of complex data. Representation learning on networks has been widely implemented for learning network structure and embedding it in a low dimensional vector space. In recent years, network embedding using representation learning has attracted increasing attention, and many deep architectures have been widely proposed. However, existing network embedding techniques ignore the multi-class spatial and temporal relationships that crucially reflect the complex nature among vertices and links in spatiotemporal heterogeneous information networks(SHINs).
To address this problem, in this paper, we present two types of collective representation learning …

Improving Structure Evaluation Through Automatic Hierarchy Expansion, Brian Mcfee, Katherine M. Kinnaird
Improving Structure Evaluation Through Automatic Hierarchy Expansion, Brian Mcfee, Katherine M. Kinnaird
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Structural segmentation is the task of partitioning a recording into non-overlapping time intervals, and labeling each segment with an identifying marker such as A, B, or verse. Hierarchical structure annotation expands this idea to allow an annotator to segment a song with multiple levels of granularity. While there has been recent progress in developing evaluation criteria for comparing two hierarchical annotations of the same recording, the existing methods have known deficiencies when dealing with inexact label matchings and sequential label repetition. In this article, we investigate methods for automatically enhancing structural annotations by inferring (and expanding) hierarchical information from the …

A novel learning-based attack detection and estimation scheme is proposed for linear networked control systems NCS, wherein the attacks on the communication network in the feedback loop are expected to increase network induced delays and packet losses, thus changing the physical system dynamics. First, the network traffic flow is modeled as a linear system with uncertain state matrix and an optimal Q-learning based control scheme over finite-horizon is utilized to stabilize the flow. Next, an adaptive observer is proposed to generate the detection residual, which is subsequently used to determine the onset of an attack when it exceeds a predefined …

View-Dependent Data Prefetching For Interactive Visualization Of Large-Scale 3d Scientific Data, Jin Wang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
One of the most significant challenges for today's interactive visualization is the efficient analysis and visualization of large-scale data, and I/O becomes a significant performance bottleneck. This thesis proposes a new data management policy to support interactive large-scale visual analytics. Our method can characterize user's data access patterns according to their data-dependent and view-dependent visualization operations, and leverage application knowledge to derive a novel scheme to predict data access during the interactive operations. Based on the prediction results, we develop a data replacement policy to exploit data locality and minimize data movement across multiple levels of a memory hierarchy. We …

Libraries are digitizing their collections of maps from all eras, generating increasingly large online collections of historical cartographic resources. Aligning such maps to a modern geographic coordinate system greatly increases their utility. This work presents a method for such automatic georeferencing, matching raster image content to GIS vector coordinate data. Given an approximate initial alignment that has already been projected from a spherical geographic coordinate system to a Cartesian map coordinate system, a probabilistic shape-matching scheme determines an optimized match between the GIS contours and ink in the binarized map image. Using an evaluation set of 20 historical maps from …
