Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In the current era, cloud computing is the major focus of distributed computing and it helps in satisfying the requirements of the business world. It provides facilities on demand under all the parameters of the computing, such as infrastructure, platform, and software, across the globe. One of the major challenges in the cloud environment is to cluster the resources and schedule the jobs among the resource clusters. Many existing approaches failed to provide an optimal solution for job scheduling due to inefficient clustering of resources. In the proposed system, a novel algorithm called resource differentiation based on equivalence node potential …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Collision risk assessment and collision avoidance of vessels have always been an important topic in ocean engineering. Decision support systems are increasingly becoming the focus of many studies in the maritime industry today as vessel accidents are often caused by human error. This study proposes an anticollision decision support system that can determine surrounding obstacles by using the information received from radar systems, obtain the position and speed of obstacles within a certain time period, and suggest possible routes to prevent collisions. In this study we use a neural network to predict the subsequent positions of surrounding vessels, a fuzzy …

Task Graph Scheduling In The Presence Of Performance Fluctuations Of Computational Resources, Najmeh Malakoutifar, Hassan Motallebi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Most of the existing work in the area of task graph scheduling considers resources with fixed processing capacity. The algorithms in these works rely on an estimation of the execution times of tasks on different resources. However, in practice, due to fluctuations in performance of cloud resources, these algorithms have challenges in these environments. In this paper, we focus on the problem of fault-tolerant scheduling of task graphs in the presence of performance fluctuations of computational resources. With the aim of reducing the adverse impacts of both soft errors and resource performance degradations, we propose an opportunistic task replication scheme …

Evaluation Of Losses In A Secondary-Side Controlled Wireless Battery Charging System, Fahri̇ Gürbüz, Tolga Sürgevi̇l, Mutlu Boztepe
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Secondary-side controlled inductive power transfer (IPT) systems are easy to control compared to primary and dual-side control methods, and more importantly, they do not require wireless communication between primary and secondary sides. In this paper, a wireless battery charging system based on secondary-side controlled IPT is analyzed and presented in detail. The proposed control method relies on the detection of the secondary coil current and the transferred power can be fully controlled by the secondary-side active rectifier with reduced number of power switching devices. The steady-state performance of the IPT system is evaluated using a fundamental harmonic analysis method for …

Investigation Of Control Of Power Flow By Using Phase Shifting Transformers: Turkey Case Study, Erdi̇ Doğan, Nuran Yörükeren
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Transmission systems are needed to be upgraded based on expected/unexpected load growth factor by years. However, it is not so easy to install and upgrade the transmission system, which requires transmission planning calculation ahead of time. Traditionally, transmission companies built extra transmission lines to meet that load growth, but it is not easy and cost-effective to upgrade the system every time loads increase. Some unexpected load growth may occur for some load points that is not in the part of planning calculation. For those situations, the transmission system may face serious congestion problems. Transmission companies have been looking for a …

An Analytical Formula For Selecting The Feeding Voltage And Frequency In A Torus-Type Nonslotted Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machine Design, Reza Mirzahosseini, Ahmad Darabi, Mohsen Assili
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motors are usually controlled by drive; therefore, in the design of these machines the feeding voltage and frequency are completely independent parameters. Undoubtedly, the values of these parameters have significant effects on the performance characteristics of the machine. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of these parameters on the efficiency of a double-sided TORUS-type nonslotted (TORUS NS) AFPM motor and propose a formula for selecting the optimal values of the feeding voltage and frequency at the beginning of the design process. To fulfill this goal, different machines with various speeds, …

Vibration Analysis Of A Novel Magnetic-Viscous Nonlinear Passive Isolator Via Finite Element Simulation, Ahmad Partovi Meran, Ümi̇t Önen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, the design and the finite element simulation of a novel magnetic-viscous vibration isolator have been presented. The proposed isolator consists of permanent magnets axially aligned in repulsion position and a viscous damper in parallel with them. The nonlinear spring characteristic of the permanent magnets provides a good damping property with this configuration. Explicit finite element analyses have been conducted to examine the dynamic behavior of the isolator. Output displacements and transmissibility ratios were measured for various magnet configurations, dashpot coefficients, and input displacement excitation frequencies to determine the best damping properties. The results of the finite element …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Floating point arithmetic circuits provide wide dynamic range and high precision, and they are widely used in scientific computing and signal processing applications, but the complexity increases in hardware implementations of floating point units. In VLSI design architecture, many applications suffer in size of the components used in logical operations. The aim of reducing architecture is to gain reduction in power loss and also in area, but the reduction in size of the components leads to an increase in delay and memory. Hence, to overcome these limitations and to optimize the area, a novel design of floating point processing element …

Monotone Data Modeling Using Rational Functions, Zoha Tariq, Farheen Ibraheem, Malik Zawwar Hussain, Muhammad Sarfraz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Rational schemes for shape preservation of monotone data both in 2D and 3D setups have been developed. $C^1$ rational cubic and partially blended bicubic functions are employed for this purpose. Monotonicity is achieved by extracting constraints on parameters involved in the description of these rational functions. Monotone curves and surfaces have been obtained, which provide evidence that the algorithm used fits most types of monotone data and produces visually pleasing results.

Ifit: An Unsupervised Discretization Method Based On The Ramer-Douglas-Peucker Algorithm, Alev Mutlu, Furkan Göz, Orhan Akbulut
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Discretization is the process of converting continuous values into discrete values. It is a preprocessing step of several machine learning and data mining algorithms and the quality of discretization may drastically affect the performance of these algorithms. In this study we propose a discretization algorithm, namely line fitting-based discretization (lFIT), based on the Ramer--Douglas--Peucker algorithm. It is a static, univariate, unsupervised, splitting-based, global, and incremental discretization method where intervals are determined based on the Ramer--Douglas--Peucker algorithm and the quality of partitioning is assessed based on the standard error of the estimate. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a …

Elimination Of Useless Images From Raw Camera-Trap Data, Ulaş Tekeli̇, Yalin Baştanlar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Camera-traps are motion triggered cameras that are used to observe animals in nature. The number of images collected from camera-traps has increased significantly with the widening use of camera-traps thanks to advances in digital technology. A great workload is required for wild-life researchers to group and label these images. We propose a system to decrease the amount of time spent by the researchers by eliminating useless images from raw camera-trap data. These images are too bright, too dark, blurred, or they contain no animals. To eliminate bright, dark, and blurred images we employ techniques based on image histograms and fast …

Spatial-Aware Global Contrast Representation For Saliency Detection, Dan Xu, Shucheng Huang, Xin Zuo
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Deep learning networks have been demonstrated to be helpful when used in salient object detection and achieved superior performance than the methods that are based on low-level hand-crafted features. In this paper, we propose a novel spatial-aware contrast cube-based convolution neural network (CNN) which can further improve the detection performance. From this cube data structure, the contrast of the superpixel is extracted. Meanwhile, the spatial information is preserved during the transformation. The proposed method has two advantages compared to the existing deep learning-based saliency methods. First, instead of feeding the deep learning networks with raw image patches or pixels, we …

All-Polymer Ultrasonic Transducer Design For An Intravascular Ultrasonographyapplication, Dooyoung Hah
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Intravascular ultrasonography (IVUS), a medical imaging modality, is used to obtain cross-sectional views of blood vessels from inside. In IVUS, transducers are brought to the proximity of the imaging targets so that highresolution images can be obtained at high frequency without much concern of signal attenuation. To eliminate mechanical rotation rendered in conventional IVUS, it is proposed to manufacture a transducer array on a flexible substrate and wrap it around a cylindrical frame. The transducer of consideration is a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT). The whole device needs to be made out of polymers to be able to endure a …

An Analytical Model To Assess Dc Characteristics Of Independent Gate Si Finfets, Umer Farooq Ahmed, Muhammad Mansoor Ahmed
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, Poisson's equation is utilized to find the potential distribution inside the channel of an independent gate FinFET device by adding the effect of channel height. The channel height of the device plays an important role in surface potential calculation when top gate voltage is applied. Using surface potential, an I - V model is developed, which can find the device current both in linear and saturation regions of operation. The model is tested on devices of different dimensions and good agreement between modeled and simulated results is observed, which validates the authenticity of the proposed model.

Design Of A Range-Segmented Cmos Current-Mode Exponential Circuit, Chih-Jen Cheng, Kuo-Jen Lin, Jwu-E Chen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A CMOS current-mode exponential circuit is designed by plugging candidate circuits into a Taylor's approximation circuit to make a multiple-segment circuit. The selection of candidate circuits is dependent on a large linearity range in each segment. The proposed range-segmented circuit is different from all segments constructed only by quadratic circuits or only by linear circuits. The proposed circuit was simulated using UMC 0.18~$\mu$m CMOS technology. The output linearity of the circuit is 56.7~dB for gain error less than 0.5~dB, and the --3~dB bandwidth of the circuit is between 69 and 150~MHz for input range from --63 to 198~$\mu$A.

Low Leakage Pocket Junction-Less Dgtfet With Biosensing Cavity Region, Suman Lata Tripathi, Raju Patel, Vimal Kumar Agrawal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Low leakage current junction-less double gate tunnel field-effect transistor (JLDGTFET) with narrow band gap material pocket region of $Si_{0.7}Ge_{0.3}$ shows increased band to band tunneling and sharp subthreshold characteristics to meet low power, high speed digital and memory applications. The proposed JLDGTFET exploits the junction-less behavior that supports reasonable values of ON/OFF currents as well as improved subthreshold parameters. First, the performance optimization of the JLDGTFET is carried out with different gate contact and oxide region materials in terms of $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ current ratio, subthreshold slope, and drain induced barrier lowering. The ON/OFF performance of the pocket $Si_{0.7}Ge_{0.3}$ JLDGTFET with cavity …

A Method For Indoor Wi-Fi Location Based On Improved Back Propagation Neuralnetwork, Jinghui Chen, Chen Dong, Guorong He, Xiaoyu Zhang
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In order to achieve high precision on indoor location, a Wi-Fi indoor location method based on improved back propagation (BP) neural network is proposed. The classical BP neural network is optimized in real time by the ant colony optimization algorithm. Meanwhile, the momentum term is introduced to construct an improved four-layer BP neural network model. The model uses the Wi-Fi signal feature as the input of the BP neural network and succeeds in the area classification under multiple Wi-Fi signal features. The experimental results demonstrate that the improved BP neural network can increase the classification accuracy of the classifier effectively, …

A Light-Weight Solution For Blackhole Attacks In Wireless Sensor Networks, Bi̇lal Erman Bi̇lgi̇n, Selçuk Baktir
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wireless sensors, which are smaller and cheaper, have started being used in many different applications. Military applications, health care and industrial monitoring, environmental applications, smart grids, and vehicular ad-hoc networks are some of the best known applications of wireless sensors. In some applications, especially military, environmental, and health care applications, it is required that the communication between sensor nodes be encrypted to achieve privacy and confidentiality. In this work, some modifications have been made to the ad-hoc on-demand distance vector routing protocol, mostly preferred in wireless sensor networks, to make data communications more reliable. The proposed routing protocol is shown …
Improving The Redundancy Of Knuth?S Balancing Scheme For Packet Transmissionsystems, Elie Ngomseu Mambou, Ebenezer Esenogho, Hendrik Ferreira
Improving The Redundancy Of Knuth?S Balancing Scheme For Packet Transmissionsystems, Elie Ngomseu Mambou, Ebenezer Esenogho, Hendrik Ferreira
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A simple scheme was proposed by Knuth to generate binary balanced code words from any information word. However, this method is limited in the sense that its redundancy is twice that of the full sets of balanced codes. The gap between Knuth?s algorithm?s redundancy and that of the full sets of balanced codes is significantly considerable. This paper attempts to reduce that gap. Furthermore, many constructions assume that a full balancing can be performed without showing the steps. A full balancing refers to the overall balancing of the encoded information together with the prefix. We propose an efficient way to …

Space-Track Modulation And Coding For High Density Aerial Vehicle Downlinknetworks With Free Space Optical And Visible Light Communications, Burhan Gülbahar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Aerial vehicles (AVs) have challenges in terms of realizing low complexity and wide coverage area wireless communications architectures, especially for crowded or high density groups of AVs with state-of-the-art free space optical (FSO) and radio frequency (RF) based system designs. FSO architectures generally target point-to-point high gain directional links while requiring strict acquisition and tracking due to the narrow beam width of laser transmitters with challenges of vibration, turbulence, misalignment, atmospheric absorption, scattering, and fading. In this article, a novel multiuser free space optical system design of modulation and coding denoted by space-track modulation and coding (STMC) is proposed for …

Verifiable Dynamic Searchable Encryption, Mohammad Etemad, Alpteki̇n Küpcü
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Using regular encryption schemes to protect the privacy of the outsourced data implies that the client should sacrifice functionality for security. Searchable symmetric encryption (SSE) schemes encrypt the data in a way that the client can later search and selectively retrieve the required data. Many SSE schemes have been proposed, starting with static constructions, and then dynamic and adaptively secure constructions but usually in the honest-but-curious model. We propose a verifiable dynamic SSE scheme that is adaptively secure against malicious adversaries. Our scheme supports file modification, which is essential for efficiently working with large files, in addition to the ability …

A Postpruning Decision Algorithm Based On Loss Minimization, Ahmed M. Ahmed, Ali̇ Hakan Ulusoy, Ahmet Ri̇zaner
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a post-pruning method known as zero-one loss function pruning (ZOLFP) that is based on zero-one loss function is introduced. The proposed ZOLFP method minimizes the expected loss, rather than evaluating the misclassification error rate of a node and its subtree. The subtree is pruned when expected loss of the node is less than or equal to the sum of the loss of its leaves. The experimental results demonstrate that ZOLFP method outperforms. Un-pruned C4.5 Decision Tree (UDT-C4.5) algorithm, reduced error pruning (REP), and minimum error pruning (MEP) in terms of performance accuracy in all used datasets. It …
A Hybrid Single-Source Shortest Path Algorithm, Hi̇lal Arslan, Murat Manguoğlu
A Hybrid Single-Source Shortest Path Algorithm, Hi̇lal Arslan, Murat Manguoğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The single-source shortest path problem arises in many applications, such as roads, social applications, and computer networks. Finding the shortest path is challenging, especially for graphs that contain a large number of vertices and edges. In this work, we propose a novel hybrid method that first sparsifies a given graph by removing most edges that cannot form the shortest path tree and then applies a classical shortest path algorithm to the sparser graph. Removing all the edges that cannot form the shortest path tree would be expensive since it is equivalent to solving the original problem. Therefore, we propose an …
Path-Oriented Random Testing Through Iterative Partitioning (Ip-Prt), Esmaeel Nikravan, Saeed Parsa
Path-Oriented Random Testing Through Iterative Partitioning (Ip-Prt), Esmaeel Nikravan, Saeed Parsa
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Path-oriented random testing aims at generating a uniformly distributed sequence of test data from a program input domain space to traverse a desired execution path of the program. To this aim, this article proposes a new algorithm to refine a program inputs domain space from invalid subdomains not covering the path. The validity of the subdomains is checked by a constraint propagation method against the path constraints (PCs). The proposed algorithm uses a divide and conquer technique to iteratively split the inputs domain into subdomains and each time refutes those subdomains that are inconsistent with the PCs. The remaining shrunken …
