Optimal Management Of Virtual Infrastructures Under Flexible Cloud Service Agreements, Zhiling Guo, Jin Li, Ram Ramesh Dec 2019

Optimal Management Of Virtual Infrastructures Under Flexible Cloud Service Agreements, Zhiling Guo, Jin Li, Ram Ramesh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A cloud service agreement entails the provisioning of a required set of virtual infrastructure resources at a specified level of availability to a client. The agreement also lays out the price charged to the client and a penalty to the provider when the assured availability is not met. The availability assurance involves backup resource provisioning, and the provider needs to allocate backups cost-effectively by balancing the resource-provisioning costs with the potential penalty costs. We develop stochastic dynamic optimization models of the backup resource-provisioning problem, leading to cost-effective resource-management policies in different practical settings. We present two sets of dynamic provisioning …

Expediting Learning With Interactive Demonstrations, Brandon Rozek Dec 2019

Expediting Learning With Interactive Demonstrations, Brandon Rozek

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Deep Reinforcement Learning has shown great progress in domains such as the Atari Arcade Learning Environment. The problem, however, is that the agent playing the game requires many interactions before it starts to show good performance. This is okay for some domains such as video games, but as we start to look towards integrating deep reinforcement learning into real world applications, we need to minimize the number of interactions required. Interactive demonstrations help expedite the agent’s learning process by providing a shared environment between the agent and the demonstrator to take turns in. This helps the agent learn directly from …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The important step is correction of the effect of atmospheric on hyper-spectral imagery of the VIS “visible”, short wave & NIR “near-infrared” spectral range. In general, the cause for limiting the use of hyperspectral images is the atmospheric effects, so, atmospheric correction is necessary for any accurate processing. In this work, two atmospheric correction techniques have been applied on Hyper-spectral image. From the raw original image and also from the FLAASH and QUAC atmospheric corrected images the spectra of vegetation, water and soil were extracted. The acquisition data for study contained Hyperion bands for year “2015” images over each of …

Image Restoration Using Automatic Damaged Regions Detection And Machine Learning-Based Inpainting Technique, Chloe Martin-King Dec 2019

Image Restoration Using Automatic Damaged Regions Detection And Machine Learning-Based Inpainting Technique, Chloe Martin-King

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

In this dissertation we propose two novel image restoration schemes. The first pertains to automatic detection of damaged regions in old photographs and digital images of cracked paintings. In cases when inpainting mask generation cannot be completely automatic, our detection algorithm facilitates precise mask creation, particularly useful for images containing damage that is tedious to annotate or difficult to geometrically define. The main contribution of this dissertation is the development and utilization of a new inpainting technique, region hiding, to repair a single image by training a convolutional neural network on various transformations of that image. Region hiding is also …

The Privacy Preserving Framework With Virtual Ring And Identity-Based Cryptography For Smart Grid, Leonard Sutanto

Publications and Research

One of the main challenges in the smart grid is how to efficiently manage the high-volume data from smart meters and sensors and preserve the privacy from the consumption data to avoid potential attacks (e.g., identity theft) for the involved prosumers, retail electricity providers and other clusters of distributed energy resources. This poster proposes a two-layer framework with the cloud computing infrastructure. The virtual ring and identity-based cryptography are utilized in each layer to preserve privacy efficiently. The methods of the virtual ring and identity-based cryptography are introduced. The purposes and needs are discussed at the end of this poster.

Local Radiance, Scott Peter Britell Dec 2019

Local Radiance, Scott Peter Britell

Dissertations and Theses

Recent years have seen a proliferation of web applications based on content management systems (CMS). Using a CMS, non-technical content authors are able to define custom content types to support their needs. These content type names and the attribute names in each content type are typically domain-specific and meaningful to the content authors. The ability of a CMS to support a multitude of content types allows for endless creation and customization but also leads to a large amount of heterogeneity within a single application. While this meaningful heterogeneity is beneficial, it introduces the problem of how to write reusable functionality …

Analysis Of Batch Arrival Single And Bulk Service Queue With Multiple Vacation Closedown And Repair, T. Deepa, A. Azhagappan Dec 2019

Analysis Of Batch Arrival Single And Bulk Service Queue With Multiple Vacation Closedown And Repair, T. Deepa, A. Azhagappan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we analyze batch arrival single and bulk service queueing model with multiple vacation, closedown and repair. The single server provides single service if the queue size is ‘< a’ and bulk service if the queue size is ‘ a’. After completing the service (single or bulk), the server may breakdown with probability ξ and then it will be sent for repair. When the system becomes empty or the server is ready to serve after the repair but no one is waiting, the server resumes closedown and then goes for a multiple vacation of random length. Using supplementary variable technique, the steady-state probability generating function (PGF) of …

Incorporating Word Order Explicitly In Glove Word Embedding, Brandon Cox Dec 2019

Incorporating Word Order Explicitly In Glove Word Embedding, Brandon Cox

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Word embedding is the process of representing words from a corpus of text as real number vectors. These vectors are often derived from frequency statistics from the source corpus. In the GloVe model as proposed by Pennington et al., these vectors are generated using a word-word cooccurrence matrix. However, the GloVe model fails to explicitly take into account the order in which words appear within the contexts of other words. In this paper, multiple methods of incorporating word order in GloVe word embeddings are proposed. The most successful method involves directly concatenating several word vector matrices for each position in …

Developing A Computational Framework For A Construction Scheduling Decision Support Web Based Expert System, Feroz Ahmed Dec 2019

Developing A Computational Framework For A Construction Scheduling Decision Support Web Based Expert System, Feroz Ahmed

Dissertations

Decision-making is one of the basic cognitive processes of human behaviors by which a preferred option or a course of action is chosen from among a set of alternatives based on certain criteria. Decision-making is the thought process of selecting a logical choice from the available options. When trying to make a good decision, all the positives and negatives of each option should be evaluated. This decision-making process is particularly challenging during the preparation of a construction schedule, where it is difficult for a human to analyze all possible outcomes of each and every situation because, construction of a project …

Why Spiking Neural Networks Are Efficient: A Theorem, Michael Beer, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2019

Why Spiking Neural Networks Are Efficient: A Theorem, Michael Beer, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Current artificial neural networks are very successful in many machine learning applications, but in some cases they still lag behind human abilities. To improve their performance, a natural idea is to simulate features of biological neurons which are not yet implemented in machine learning. One of such features is the fact that in biological neural networks, signals are represented by a train of spikes. Researchers have tried adding this spikiness to machine learning and indeed got very good results, especially when processing time series (and, more generally, spatio-temporal data). In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for this empirical …

Joule's 19th Century Energy Conservation Meta-Law And The 20th Century Physics (Quantum Mechanics And General Relativity): 21st Century Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Dec 2019

Joule's 19th Century Energy Conservation Meta-Law And The 20th Century Physics (Quantum Mechanics And General Relativity): 21st Century Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Joule's Energy Conservation Law was the first "meta-law": a general principle that all physical equations must satisfy. It has led to many important and useful physical discoveries. However, a recent analysis seems to indicate that this meta-law is inconsistent with other principles -- such as the existence of free will. We show that this conclusion about inconsistency is based on a seemingly reasonable -- but simplified -- analysis of the situation. We also show that a more detailed mathematical and physical analysis of the situation reveals that not only Joule's principle remains true -- it is actually strengthened: it is …

Why Gamma Distribution Of Seismic Inter-Event Times: A Theoretical Explanation, Laxman Bokati, Aaron A. Velasco, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that the distribution of seismic inter-event times is well described by the Gamma distribution. Recently, this fact has been used to successfully predict major seismic events. In this paper, we explain that the Gamma distribution of seismic inter-event times can be naturally derived from the first principles.

Finitely Generated Sets Of Fuzzy Values: If "And" Is Exact, Then "Or" Is Almost Always Approximate, And Vice Versa -- A Theorem, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2019

Finitely Generated Sets Of Fuzzy Values: If "And" Is Exact, Then "Or" Is Almost Always Approximate, And Vice Versa -- A Theorem, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the traditional fuzzy logic, experts' degrees of confidence are described by numbers from the interval [0,1]. Clearly, not all the numbers from this interval are needed: in the whole history of the Universe, there will be only countably many statements and thus, only countably many possible degree, while the interval [0,1] is uncountable. It is therefore interesting to analyze what is the set S of actually used values. The answer depends on the choice of "and"-operations (t-norms) and "or"-operations (t-conorms). For the simplest pair of min and max, any finite set will do -- as long as it is …

Fuzzy Logic Explains The Usual Choice Of Logical Operations In 2-Valued Logic, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2019

Fuzzy Logic Explains The Usual Choice Of Logical Operations In 2-Valued Logic, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the usual 2-valued logic, from the purely mathematical viewpoint, there are many possible binary operations. However, in commonsense reasoning, we only use a few of them: why? In this paper, we show that fuzzy logic can explain the usual choice of logical operations in 2-valued logic.
