A Scalable Approach To Joint Cyber Insurance And Security-As-A-Service Provisioning In Cloud Computing, Jonathan David Chase, Dusit Niyato, Ping Wang, Sivadon Chaisiri, Ryan K. L. Ko

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As computing services are increasingly cloud-based, corporations are investing in cloud-based security measures. The Security-as-a-Service (SECaaS) paradigm allows customers to outsource security to the cloud, through the payment of a subscription fee. However, no security system is bulletproof, and even one successful attack can result in the loss of data and revenue worth millions of dollars. To guard against this eventuality, customers may also purchase cyber insurance to receive recompense in the case of loss. To achieve cost effectiveness, it is necessary to balance provisioning of security and insurance, even when future costs and risks are uncertain. To this end, …

Location Based Encryption, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Jun Yan, Dongxi Liu Jul 2019

Location Based Encryption, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Jun Yan, Dongxi Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We first propose a 2D Location Based Encryption (LBE) scheme, where the setting includes a geography center system and the 2D triangle area including the set of locations. A user joining in the system is provided with a pre-arranged key, which belongs to her/his location. If the user’s location is belonging to this area, he/she can decrypt the message. Our proposed scheme achieves a constant ciphertext size in encryption algorithm and decryption cost. Beyond the 2D-LBE scheme, we explore the 3D-LBE scheme; whereby the location is set up in the 3D dimensions. This proposed scheme is an extension of 2D-LBE …

Personalized Fashion Recommendation With Visual Explanations Based On Multimodal Attention Network: Towards Visually Explainable Recommendation, Xu Chen, Hanxiong Chen, Hongteng Xu, Yongfeng Zhang, Yixin Cao, Zheng Qin, Hongyuan Zha

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Fashion recommendation has attracted increasing attention from both industry and academic communities. This paper proposes a novel neural architecture for fashion recommendation based on both image region-level features and user review information. Our basic intuition is that: for a fashion image, not all the regions are equally important for the users, i.e., people usually care about a few parts of the fashion image. To model such human sense, we learn an attention model over many pre-segmented image regions, based on which we can understand where a user is really interested in on the image, and correspondingly, represent the image in …

How Could Robots Successfully Elicit Help From Humans?, Layla Alarifi Jul 2019

How Could Robots Successfully Elicit Help From Humans?, Layla Alarifi

Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid growth of robot usages, more attention has been focused on the robots’ hardware and software to improve functionality. However, the interaction between humans and robots can be key to enhancing robots’ performance. Autonomous mobile robots may more successfully complete their tasks if they effectively solicit help from humans when they reach their limits. Hence, in this thesis, we examine three different manners, friendly, polite, and indirect, combining different interaction modalities, like speech and gestures. We conducted an experiment (involving 45 subjects) where the NAO robot addresses bystanders with the aforementioned three manners to elicit help with opening …

Examining The Correlates Of Failed Drdos Attacks, Thomas Hyslip, Thomas Holt Jun 2019

Examining The Correlates Of Failed Drdos Attacks, Thomas Hyslip, Thomas Holt

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Over the last decade, there has been a rise in cybercrime services offered on a feefor- service basis, enabling individuals to direct attacks against various targets. One of the recent services offered involves stresser or booter operators, who offer distributed reflected denial of service (DRDoS) attacks on an hourly or subscription basis. These attacks involve the use of malicious traffic reflected off of webservers to increase the volume of traffic, which is directed toward websites and servers rendering them unusable. Researchers have examined DRDoS attacks using realtime data, though few have considered the experience of their customers and the factors …

Df 2.0: An Automated, Privacy Preserving, And Efficient Digital Forensic Framework That Leverages Machine Learning For Evidence Prediction And Privacy Evaluation, Robin Verma, Jayaprakash Govindaraj Dr, Saheb Chhabra, Gaurav Gupta

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The current state of digital forensic investigation is continuously challenged by the rapid technological changes, the increase in the use of digital devices (both the heterogeneity and the count), and the sheer volume of data that these devices could contain. Although data privacy protection is not a performance measure, however, preventing privacy violations during the digital forensic investigation, is also a big challenge. With a perception that the completeness of investigation and the data privacy preservation are incompatible with each other, the researchers have provided solutions to address the above-stated challenges that either focus on the effectiveness of the investigation …

Beyond Labels And Captions: Contextualizing Grounded Semantics For Explainable Visual Interpretation, Sathyanarayanan Narasimhan Aakur Jun 2019

Beyond Labels And Captions: Contextualizing Grounded Semantics For Explainable Visual Interpretation, Sathyanarayanan Narasimhan Aakur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One of the long-standing problems in artificial intelligence is the development of intelligent agents with complete visual understanding. Understanding entails recognition of scene attributes such as actors, objects and actions as well as reasoning about the common semantic structure that combines these attributes into a coherent description. While significant milestones have been achieved in the field of computer vision, majority of the work has been concentrated on supervised visual recognition where complex visual representations are learned and a few discrete categories or labels are assigned to these representations. This implies a closed world where the underlying assumption is that all …

A Resource Constrained Shortest Paths Approach To Reducing Personal Pollution Exposure, Elling Payne Jun 2019

A Resource Constrained Shortest Paths Approach To Reducing Personal Pollution Exposure, Elling Payne

REU Final Reports

As wildfires surge in frequency and impact in the Pacific Northwest, in tandem with increasingly traffic-choked roads, personal exposure to harmful airborne pollutants is a rising concern. Particularly at risk are school-age children, especially those living in disadvantaged communities near major motorways and industrial centers. Many of these children must walk to school, and the choice of route can effect exposure. Route-planning applications and frameworks utilizing computational shortest paths methods have been proposed which consider personal exposure with reasonable success, but few have focused on pollution exposure, and all have been limited in scalability or geographic scope. This paper addresses …

Hadoop Performance Analysis Model With Deep Data Locality, Sungchul Lee, Ju-Yeon Jo, Yoohwan Kim Jun 2019

Hadoop Performance Analysis Model With Deep Data Locality, Sungchul Lee, Ju-Yeon Jo, Yoohwan Kim

Computer Science Faculty Research

Background: Hadoop has become the base framework on the big data system via the simple concept that moving computation is cheaper than moving data. Hadoop increases a data locality in the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) to improve the performance of the system. The network traffic among nodes in the big data system is reduced by increasing a data-local on the machine. Traditional research increased the data-local on one of the MapReduce stages to increase the Hadoop performance. However, there is currently no mathematical performance model for the data locality on the Hadoop. Methods: This study made the Hadoop performance …

Graph-Based Offline Signature Verification, Paul Maergner, Nicholas Howe, Kaspar Riesen, Andreas Fischer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Graphs provide a powerful representation formalism that offers great promise to benefit tasks like handwritten signature verification. While most state-of-the-art approaches to signature verification rely on fixed-size representations, graphs are flexible in size and allow modeling local features as well as the global structure of the handwriting. In this article, we present two recent graph-based approaches to offline signature verification: keypoint graphs with approximated graph edit distance and inkball models. We provide a comprehensive description of the methods, propose improvements both in terms of computational time and accuracy, and report experimental results for four benchmark datasets. The proposed methods achieve …

Efficient Gpu Tree Walks For Effective Distributed N-Body Simulations, Jianqiao Liu, Michael Robson, Thomas Quinn, Milind Kulkarni Jun 2019

Efficient Gpu Tree Walks For Effective Distributed N-Body Simulations, Jianqiao Liu, Michael Robson, Thomas Quinn, Milind Kulkarni

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

N-body problems, such as simulating the motion of stars in a galaxy, are popularly solved using tree codes like Barnes-Hut. ChaNGa is a best-of-breed n-body platform that uses an asymptotically-efficient tree traversal strategy known as a dual-tree walk to quickly determine which bodies need to interact with each other to provide an accurate simulation result. However, this strategy does not work well on GPUs, due to the highly-irregular nature of the dual-tree algorithm. On GPUs, ChaNGa uses a hybrid strategy where the CPU performs the tree walk to determine which bodies interact while the GPU performs the force computation. In …

Influence Spread In Two-Layer Interdependent Networks: Designed Single-Layer Or Random Two-Layer Initial Spreaders?, Hana Khamfroush, Nathaniel Hudson, Samuel Iloo, Mahshid R. Naeini

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Influence spread in multi-layer interdependent networks (M-IDN) has been studied in the last few years; however, prior works mostly focused on the spread that is initiated in a single layer of an M-IDN. In real world scenarios, influence spread can happen concurrently among many or all components making up the topology of an M-IDN. This paper investigates the effectiveness of different influence spread strategies in M-IDNs by providing a comprehensive analysis of the time evolution of influence propagation given different initial spreader strategies. For this study we consider a two-layer interdependent network and a general probabilistic threshold influence spread model …

Incremental Data Annotation With Mask R-Cnn, Michael Miller Jun 2019

Incremental Data Annotation With Mask R-Cnn, Michael Miller

Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of object detection and instance segmentation algorithms, the complexity of annotating training data has compounded. In traditional image classification tasks, training images must only be given a label. This type of training data alone is not enough to perform detection or instance segmentation as we need additional object level information like bounding boxes or segmentation masks appended to the annotation. There are many tools that help a user process images to produce data annotations that contain bounding box and segmentation mask information. However, most of these are semi-supervised and require a user to be present for each …

Multi-Ontology Refined Embeddings (More): A Hybrid Multi-Ontology And Corpus-Based Semantic Representation For Biomedical Concepts, Steven Jiang Jun 2019

Multi-Ontology Refined Embeddings (More): A Hybrid Multi-Ontology And Corpus-Based Semantic Representation For Biomedical Concepts, Steven Jiang

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Objective: Currently, a major limitation for natural language processing (NLP) analyses in clinical applications is that a concept can be referenced in various forms across different texts. This paper introduces Multi-Ontology Refined Embeddings (MORE), a novel hybrid framework for incorporating domain knowledge from various ontologies into a distributional semantic model, learned from a corpus of clinical text. This approach generates word embeddings that are more accurate and extensible for computing the semantic similarity of biomedical concepts than previous methods. Materials and Methods: We use the RadCore and MIMIC-III free-text datasets for the corpus-based component of MORE. For the ontology-based component, …
