A Vector Field Design Approach To Animated Transitions, Yong Wang, Daniel Archambault, Carlos E. Scheidegger, Huamin Qu Sep 2018

A Vector Field Design Approach To Animated Transitions, Yong Wang, Daniel Archambault, Carlos E. Scheidegger, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Animated transitions can be effective in explaining and exploring a small number of visualizations where there are drastic changes in the scene over a short interval of time. This is especially true if data elements cannot be visually distinguished by other means. Current research in animated transitions has mainly focused on linear transitions (all elements follow straight line paths) or enhancing coordinated motion through bundling of linear trajectories. In this paper, we introduce animated transition design, a technique to build smooth, non-linear transitions for clustered data with either minimal or no user involvement. The technique is flexible and simple to …

Bilock: User Authentication Via Dental Occlusion Biometrics, Yongpan Zou, Meng Zhao, Zimu Zhou, Jiawei Lin, Mo Li, Kaishun Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User authentication on smart devices is indispensable to keep data privacy and security. It is especially significant for emerging wearable devices such as smartwatches considering data sensitivity in them. However, conventional authentication methods are not applicable for wearables due to constraints of size and hardware, which makes present wearable devices lack convenient, secure and low-cost authentication schemes. To tackle this problem, we reveal a novel biometric authentication mechanism which makes use of sounds of human dental occlusion (i.e., tooth click). We demonstrate its feasibility by comprehensive measurement study, and design a prototype-BiLock with two Android platforms. Extensive real-world experiments have …

Secondary Frequency Stochastic Optimal Control In Independent Microgrids With Virtual Synchronous Generator-Controlled Energy Storage Systems, Ting Yang, Yajian Zhang, Zhaoxia Wang, Haibo Pen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the increasing proportion of renewable energy in microgrids (MGs), its stochastic fluctuation of output power has posed challenges to system safety and operation, especially frequency stability. Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) technology, as one effectivemethod, was used to smoothen frequency fluctuation and improve the system's dynamic performance, which can simulate the inertia and damping of the traditional synchronous generator. This study outlines the integration of VSG-controlled energy storage systems (ESSs) and traditional synchronous generators so they jointly participate in secondary frequency regulation in an independent MG. Firstly, a new uncertain state-space model for secondary frequency control is established, considering the measurement …

Concessive Online/Offline Attribute Based Encryption With Cryptographic Reverse Firewalls: Secure And Efficient Fine-Grained Access Control On Corrupted Machines, Hui Ma, Rui Zhang, Guomin Yang, Zishuai Song, Shuzhou Sun, Yuting Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute based encryption (ABE) has potential to be applied in various cloud computing applications. However, the Snowden revelations show that powerful adversaries can corrupt users’ machines to compromise the security, and many implementations of provably secure encryption schemes may present undetectable vulnerabilities that can expose secret, e.g., the scheme still works properly even some backdoors have been stealthily engineered on users’ machines. Undoubtedly, ABE is also facing the above security threats. Recently, Mironov and Stephens-Davidowitz proposed cryptographic reverse firewall (CRF) to solve the problem. Unfortunately, no CRF-based protection for ABE has been proposed so far due to the complex system …

Diversity In Online Advertising: A Case Study Of 69 Brands On Social Media, Jisun An, Ingmar Weber Sep 2018

Diversity In Online Advertising: A Case Study Of 69 Brands On Social Media, Jisun An, Ingmar Weber

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Lack of diversity in advertising is a long-standing problem. Despite growing cultural awareness and missed business opportunities, many minorities remain under- or inappropriately represented in advertising. Previous research has studied how people react to culturally embedded ads, but such work focused mostly on print media or television using lab experiments. In this work, we look at diversity in content posted by 69 U.S. brands on two social media platforms, Instagram and Facebook. Using face detection technology, we infer the gender, race, and age of both the faces in the ads and of the users engaging with ads. Using this dataset, …

A Two-Stage Mechanism For Ordinal Peer Assessment, Zhize Li, Le Zhang, Zhixuan Fang, Jian Li Sep 2018

A Two-Stage Mechanism For Ordinal Peer Assessment, Zhize Li, Le Zhang, Zhixuan Fang, Jian Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Peer assessment is a major method for evaluating the performance of employee, accessing the contributions of individuals within a group, making social decisions and many other scenarios. The idea is to ask the individuals of the same group to assess the performance of the others. Scores or rankings are then determined based on these evaluations. However, peer assessment can be biased and manipulated, especially when there is a conflict of interests. In this paper, we consider the problem of eliciting the underlying ordering (i.e. ground truth) of n strategic agents with respect to their performances, e.g., quality of work, contributions, …

Cognitive Antecedents Of Family Business Bias In Investment Decisions: A Commentary On 'Risky Decisions And The Family Firm Bias: An Experimental Study Based On Prospect Theory, H. Fang, Keng Siau, E. Memili, J. Dou Sep 2018

Cognitive Antecedents Of Family Business Bias In Investment Decisions: A Commentary On 'Risky Decisions And The Family Firm Bias: An Experimental Study Based On Prospect Theory, H. Fang, Keng Siau, E. Memili, J. Dou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Lude and Prügl explored “family business bias,” a cognitive tendency where the family nature of a firm can often reduce investors’ perceived risk in investments. As a result, investors would display lower risk-avoidance in the gain domain and reinforced risk-seeking in the loss domain. We expanded the authors’ work by introducing four cognitive factors (anchoring, representativeness, stereotype heuristic, and information availability) that can explain the underlying mechanisms behind the prevalence of “family business bias” and other cognitive misperceptions surrounding family businesses when it comes to investment decisions.

A Macro-Level Order Metric For Self-Organizing Adaptive Systems, David W. King, Gilbert L. Peterson Sep 2018

A Macro-Level Order Metric For Self-Organizing Adaptive Systems, David W. King, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Analyzing how agent interactions affect macro-level self-organized behaviors can yield a deeper understanding of how complex adaptive systems work. The dynamic nature of complex systems makes it difficult to determine if, or when, a system has reached a state of equilibrium or is about to undergo a major transition reflecting the appearance of self-organized states. Using the notion of local neighborhood entropy, this paper presents a metric for evaluating the macro-level order of a system. The metric is tested in two dissimilar complex adaptive systems with self-organizing properties: An autonomous swarm searching for multiple dynamic targets and Conway's Game of …

The Effectiveness Of Using Diversity To Select Multiple Classifier Systems With Varying Classification Thresholds, Harris K. Butler Iv, Mark A. Friend, Kenneth W. Bauer, Trevor J. Bihl

Faculty Publications

In classification applications, the goal of fusion techniques is to exploit complementary approaches and merge the information provided by these methods to provide a solution superior than any single method. Associated with choosing a methodology to fuse pattern recognition algorithms is the choice of algorithm or algorithms to fuse. Historically, classifier ensemble accuracy has been used to select which pattern recognition algorithms are included in a multiple classifier system. More recently, research has focused on creating and evaluating diversity metrics to more effectively select ensemble members. Using a wide range of classification data sets, methodologies, and fusion techniques, current diversity …

Techniques For Improved Space Object Detection Performance From Ground-Based Telescope Systems Using Long And Short Exposure Images, David J. Becker

Theses and Dissertations

Space object detection is of great importance in the highly dependent yet competitive and congested space domain. Detection algorithms employed play a crucial role in fulfilling the detection component in the space situational awareness mission to detect, track, characterize and catalog unknown space objects. Many current space detection algorithms use a matched filter or a spatial correlator on long exposure data to make a detection decision at a single pixel point of a spatial image based on the assumption that the data follows a Gaussian distribution. This research focuses on improving current space object detection algorithms and developing new algorithms …

The Influence Of Conversational Agent Embodiment And Conversational Relevance On Socially Desirable Responding, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Justin Scott Giboney, G. Mark Grimes, Jay F. Nunamaker Jr.

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Conversational agents (CAs) are becoming an increasingly common component in a wide range of information systems. A great deal of research to date has focused on enhancing traits that make CAs more humanlike. However, few studies have examined the influence such traits have on information disclosure. This research builds on self-disclosure, social desirability, and social presence theories to explain how CA anthropomorphism affects disclosure of personally sensitive information. Taken together, these theories suggest that as CAs become more humanlike, the social desirability of user responses will increase. In this study, we use a laboratory experiment to examine the influence of …

Auxetics Abounding, Ciprian S. Borcea, Ileana Streinu Aug 2018

Auxetics Abounding, Ciprian S. Borcea, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Auxetic behavior refers to lateral widening upon stretching. Although a structural origin for this rather counterintuitive type of deformation was often suggested, a theoretical understanding of the role of geometry in auxetic behavior has been a challenge for a long time. However, for structures modeled as periodic bar-and-joint frameworks, including atom-and-bond frameworks in crystalline materials, there is a complete geometric solution which opens endless possibilities for new auxetic designs. We construct a large family of three-dimensional auxetic periodic mechanisms and discuss the ideas involved in their design.

Product Innovation Design Based On Deep Learning And Kansei Engineering, Huafeng Quan, Shaobo Li, Jianjun Hu Aug 2018

Product Innovation Design Based On Deep Learning And Kansei Engineering, Huafeng Quan, Shaobo Li, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

Creative product design is becoming critical to the success of many enterprises. However, the conventional product innovation process is hindered by two major challenges: the difficulty to capture users’ preferences and the lack of intuitive approaches to visually inspire the designer, which is especially true in fashion design and form design of many other types of products. In this paper, we propose to combine Kansei engineering and the deep learning for product innovation (KENPI) framework, which can transfer color, pattern, etc. of a style image in real time to a product’s shape automatically. To capture user preferences, we combine Kansei …

Fake News Detection: A Deep Learning Approach, Aswini Thota, Priyanka Tilak, Simrat Ahluwalia, Nibrat Lohia

SMU Data Science Review

Fake news is defined as a made-up story with an intention to deceive or to mislead. In this paper we present the solution to the task of fake news detection by using Deep Learning architectures. Gartner research [1] predicts that “By 2022, most people in mature economies will consume more false information than true information”. The exponential increase in production and distribution of inaccurate news presents an immediate need for automatically tagging and detecting such twisted news articles. However, automated detection of fake news is a hard task to accomplish as it requires the model to understand nuances in natural …

Computational Thinking And Literacy, Sharin Rawhiya Jacob, Mark Warschauer

Journal of Computer Science Integration

Today’s students will enter a workforce that is powerfully shaped by computing. To be successful in a changing economy, students must learn to think algorithmically and computationally, to solve problems with varying levels of abstraction. These computational thinking skills have become so integrated into social function as to represent fundamental literacies. However, computer science has not been widely taught in K-12 schools. Efforts to create computer science standards and frameworks have yet to make their way into mandated course requirements. Despite a plethora of research on digital literacies, research on the role of computational thinking in the literature is sparse. …

Discrete Information Object Analysis Of Primary Flight Display Clutter, Kenneth Ward Aug 2018

Discrete Information Object Analysis Of Primary Flight Display Clutter, Kenneth Ward

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Modern aircraft utilize digital display screens to provide critical flight and system status information to pilots. As computing power has increased, the number of data sources and information presented has also increased, with the goal of increasing situational awareness. However, the display can become cluttered with extraneous or irrelevant information, to the detriment of pilot cognitive workload. Pilot perceptions of clutter vary with flight experience, introducing unique considerations in the flight training environment, given the experience difference between instructors and students. Researchers have studied the problem, identifying both the number of visual objects and information density as predictors of perception …
