Cybersecurity, including the security of information technology (IT), is a critical requirement in ensuring society trusts, and therefore can benefit from, modern technology. Problematically, though, rarely a day goes by without a news story related to how critical data has been exposed, exfiltrated, or otherwise inappropriately used or accessed as a result of supply chain vulnerabilities. From the Russian government's campaign to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election to the September 2017 Equifax breach of more than 140-million Americans' credit reports, mitigating cyber risk has become a topic of conversation in boardrooms and the White House, on Wall Street and …

The New Writs Of Assistance, Ian Samuel Jan 2018

The New Writs Of Assistance, Ian Samuel

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The providers of network services (and the makers of network devices) know an enormous amount about our lives. Because they do, these network intermediaries are being asked with increasing frequency to assist the government in solving crimes or gathering intelligence. Given how much they know about us, if the government can secure the assistance of these intermediaries, it will enjoy a huge increase in its theoretical capacity for surveillance—the ability to learn, in principle, almost anything about anyone. That has the potential to create serious social harm, even assuming that the government continues to adhere to ordinary democratic norms and …

Using Web Conferencing Technology To Foster Inclusive Course Experiences For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students, Elissa Weeden Jan 2018

Using Web Conferencing Technology To Foster Inclusive Course Experiences For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students, Elissa Weeden

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

A mainstream course has several components that deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students must reconcile. In class, components can include the instructor, projection display, whiteboard, interpreting, and real-time captioning. Outside the classroom, components can include materials from the instructor, notes generated by a note-taker, and a lecture transcript generated via real-time captioning. Web conferencing software can be harnessed to create inclusive experiences for DHH students. Such software can place all components of a class session on a single screen to create a composite screen solution that can be viewed by students in real-time and recorded for later, self-paced review. A composite …

Multidimensional Knowledge Flow Dynamics In Context, Lina Lo Jan 2018

Multidimensional Knowledge Flow Dynamics In Context, Lina Lo

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge is a sustainable advantage and knowledge assets can increase value with use. A snowball effect of knowledge advantage advocates effective knowledge management and fosters its continual growth as it flows. Knowledge, however, flows unevenly throughout an organization and the problem is that the fundamental dynamics of these flows are still not well characterized in theoretical and computational models. This study built on existing work—knowledge-flow theory, need knowledge generation, and the critical success factors for enterprise resource planning implementation—to examine the multidimensional knowledge-flow phenomenon in context, and used the case study methodology for knowledge-flow theory building. The research question was …

Semi-Informed Multi-Agent Patrol Strategies, Chad E. Hardin Jan 2018

Semi-Informed Multi-Agent Patrol Strategies, Chad E. Hardin

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The adversarial multi-agent patrol problem is an active research topic with many real-world applications such as physical robots guarding an area and software agents protecting a computer network. In it, agents patrol a graph looking for so-called critical vertices that are subject to attack by adversaries. The agents are unaware of which vertices are subject to attack by adversaries and when they encounter such a vertex they attempt to protect it from being compromised (an adversary must occupy the vertex it targets a certain amount of time for the attack to succeed). Even though the terms adversary and attack are …

A Developmental Research Of A Taxonomy For Employees’ Mobile Device Cyberslacking And Commitment To The Organization In The Context Of Productivity, Saleh Alharthi Jan 2018

A Developmental Research Of A Taxonomy For Employees’ Mobile Device Cyberslacking And Commitment To The Organization In The Context Of Productivity, Saleh Alharthi

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

While the introduction of the Internet facilitated the communication channels at the workplace to improve employees’ productivity, it also raised new challenges, such as Internet use for personal activities. Organizations face productivity losses due to employees’ involvement in counterproductive behaviors, such as cyberslacking. The frequency of mobile device cyberslacking is anticipated to increase due to continuous developments in online connectivity, applications, and the significant growth of mobile device usage worldwide. In addition, research has shown that employees’ commitment to their organization can encourage behaviors that positively influence productivity. Employee’s commitment is a crucial factor because it can benefit an organization …

An Operational Management Competency Model For Online Education Administrators, Fanniel Demarks Jan 2018

An Operational Management Competency Model For Online Education Administrators, Fanniel Demarks

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Despite the steady rise in online education and increasingly empirical studies on related learning technologies and technology support, there is considerable evidence that the field has not kept the pace with studies related to online education administrators (OEAs). Further investigation was needed into OEAs’ practice of day-to-day administration of their programs. Therefore, this study examined OEAs’ perceptions of their areas of responsibility, tasks to be accomplished and skills and knowledge needed for them to get the job done. A three-round Delphi research technique was employed as a structured group communication method between five participants to answer three research questions. The …

Development Of A Client-Side Evil Twin Attack Detection System For Public Wi-Fi Hotspots Based On Design Science Approach, Liliana R. Horne Jan 2018

Development Of A Client-Side Evil Twin Attack Detection System For Public Wi-Fi Hotspots Based On Design Science Approach, Liliana R. Horne

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Users and providers benefit considerably from public Wi-Fi hotspots. Users receive wireless Internet access and providers draw new prospective customers. While users are able to enjoy the ease of Wi-Fi Internet hotspot networks in public more conveniently, they are more susceptible to a particular type of fraud and identify theft, referred to as evil twin attack (ETA). Through setting up an ETA, an attacker can intercept sensitive data such as passwords or credit card information by snooping into the communication links. Since the objective of free open (unencrypted) public Wi-Fi hotspots is to provide ease of accessibility and to entice …

Decidability Of Unification Modulo Two Theories Of Division, Zhenjiang Dai Jan 2018

Decidability Of Unification Modulo Two Theories Of Division, Zhenjiang Dai

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

We study decidability of a term rewriting system R modulo equational theories associative (A) or associative-commutative (AC). The study of this problem is motivated by possible applications to handle multiplication (∗) and division (/) algebras. We use several steps to prove the term rewriting system R modulo equational theories is decidable.

Asymmetric Unification And Disunification, Veena Ravishankar Jan 2018

Asymmetric Unification And Disunification, Veena Ravishankar

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

We compare two kinds of unification problems: asymmetric unification and disunification, which are variants of equational unification. Asymmetric unification is a type of equational unification where the solutions keep the right-hand sides of the equations in normal form with respect to the given term rewriting system. In disunification we solve equations and disequations with respect to an equational theory. We contrast the time complexities and decidability of both and show that the two problems are incomparable: there are theories where one is decidable whereas the other is undecidable; for theories which are decidable we show one can be solved in …

On Lm-Systems And Forward Closed String Rewriting Systems, Daniel Hono Jan 2018

On Lm-Systems And Forward Closed String Rewriting Systems, Daniel Hono

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The E-Unification problem appears in important application areas, e.g. automated deduction and cryptographic protocol analysis. As E-Unification is undecidable in general, there is an active search for decidable and, ideally, tractable instances of the problem.

Clinical Information Extraction From Unstructured Free-Texts, Mingzhe Tao Jan 2018

Clinical Information Extraction From Unstructured Free-Texts, Mingzhe Tao

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Information extraction (IE) is a fundamental component of natural language processing (NLP) that provides a deeper understanding of the texts. In the clinical domain, documents prepared by medical experts (e.g., discharge summaries, drug labels, medical history records) contain a significant amount of clinically-relevant information that is crucial to the overall well-being of patients. Unfortunately, in many cases, clinically-relevant information is presented in an unstructured format, predominantly consisting of free-texts, making it inaccessible to computerized methods. Automatic extraction of this information can improve accessibility. However, the presence of synonymous expressions, medical acronyms, misspellings, negated phrases, and ambiguous terminologies make automatic extraction …

An Efficient System For Subgraph Discovery, Aparna Joshi Jan 2018

An Efficient System For Subgraph Discovery, Aparna Joshi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Subgraph discovery in a single data graph---finding subsets of vertices and edges satisfying a user-specified criteria---is an essential and general graph analytics operation with a wide spectrum of applications. Depending on the criteria, subgraphs of interest may correspond to cliques of friends in social networks, interconnected entities in RDF data, or frequent patterns in protein interaction networks to name a few. Existing systems usually examine a large number of subgraphs while employing many computers and often produce an enormous result set of subgraphs. How can we enable fast discovery of only the most relevant subgraphs while minimizing the computational requirements?

The Stance On Artificial Intelligence, Edward Gonzalez-Olmedo Jan 2018

The Stance On Artificial Intelligence, Edward Gonzalez-Olmedo

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein brings up the question: When do we draw the line on technological Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancement? The importance of this is that we need to be able to control the technology that we produce. Humans always strive for an advancement in technology, and AI is one of the more advanced concepts. Mary Shelley introduces this problem with Frankenstein when he creates a creature which cannot be controlled by its creator. Humans have begun to tinker with this new technology, yet mankind does not fully understand AI.

● Human desire is inevitable. ● The creation of AI …

Boundwarden: Thread-Enforced Spatial Memory Safety Through Compile-Time Transformations, Smith Dhumbumroong Jan 2018

Boundwarden: Thread-Enforced Spatial Memory Safety Through Compile-Time Transformations, Smith Dhumbumroong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This dissertation presents BoundWarden, a novel runtime spatial memory safety enforcement technique that comprehensively detects and prevents buffer overflow and other out-of-bound errors in buffers on stack, heap, and BSS and data segments of memory. BoundWarden leverages the ubiquity of multi-core processors by offloading most of the works to a dedicated bound checking thread, which performs bound checking and manages metadata, thus reducing the runtime overhead. Since BoundWarden stores base and bound of buffers in a dedicated bound table, the memory layout of programs remains unchanged, thus preserving compatibility with existing libraries and binaries. Experiments showed that the prototype of …

Across the United States, suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged between 15 and 34, and younger people are more prone to mental health problems, suicidal thoughts, and behaviors. For instance, 80% of patients with Borderline Personality Disorder have suicide-related behaviors, and between 4-9% of them commit suicide. Moreover, the social stigma associated with mental health issues and suicide deter patients from sharing their experiences directly with others. In such a situation, social media that provides a free and open forum for voluntary expression can provide insights into suicide ideation and self-destructive behavior.

Sleep disorders are common in children with asthma and are increasingly implicated in poor asthma control. Smart wearables such as the Fitbit wristband allow monitoring of users’ sleep duration and quality in their natural surroundings. However, the utility and efficacy of using such wearable devices to monitor sleep in pediatric patients with asthma have not been well-established. Thus, the objective of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of recording sleep quality and sleep duration using Fitbit in children with asthma.

Our current health applications do not adequately take into account contextual and personalized knowledge about patients. In order to design “Personalized Coach for Healthcare” applications to manage chronic diseases, there is a need to create a Personalized Healthcare Knowledge Graph (PHKG) that takes into consideration a patient’s health condition (personalized knowledge) and enriches that with contextualized knowledge from environmental sensors and Web of Data (e.g., symptoms and treatments for diseases). To develop PHKG, aggregating knowledge from various heterogeneous sources such as the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, clinical notes, and Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) is necessary. In this paper, we …

Robust Image Hashing Via Random Gabor Filtering And Dwt, Zhenjun Tang, Man Ling, Heng Yao, Zhenxing Qian, Xianquan Zhang, Jilian Zhang, Shijie Xu

PhD Student’s Publications Collection

Image hashing is a useful multimedia technology for many applications, such as image authentication, image retrieval, image copy detection and image forensics. In this paper, we propose a robust image hashing based on random Gabor filtering and discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Specifically, robust and secure image features are first extracted from the normalized image by Gabor filtering and a chaotic map called Skew tent map, and then are compressed via a single-level 2-D DWT. Image hash is finally obtained by concatenating DWT coefficients in the LL sub-band. Many experiments with open image datasets are carried out and the results illustrate …

In recent years, the cheminformatics community has seen an increased success with machine learning-based scoring functions for estimating binding affinities. The prediction of protein-ligand binding affinities is crucial for drug discovery research. Many physics-based scoring functions have been developed over the years. Lately, machine learning approaches are proven to boost the performance of traditional scoring functions. In this study, two scoring functions were developed; one is based on the Convolutional Neural Networks and the other one, called DLSCORE, is based on an ensemble of fully connected neural networks. Both the models were trained on the refined PDBbind (v.2016) dataset using …
