Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) can be used to identify and quantify changes in molecular and cellular targets involved in disease. A radiopharmaceutical that targets a specific metabolic function is administered to a subject and planar projections are formed by imaging emissions at different view angles around the subject. The reconstruction task is to determine the distribution of radioactivity within the subject from the projections. We present a reconstruction approach that utilizes only a few view angles, resulting in a highly underdetermined system, which could be used for dynamic imaging applications designed to quantify physiologic processes altered with disease. …
Artificial Intelligence: An Analysis Of Alan Turing’S Role In The Conception And Development Of Intelligent Machinery, Erika L. Furtado
Artificial Intelligence: An Analysis Of Alan Turing’S Role In The Conception And Development Of Intelligent Machinery, Erika L. Furtado
Selected Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to follow the thread of Alan Turing’s ideas throughout his decades of research and analyze how his predictions have come to fruition over the years. Turing’s Computing Machinery and Intelligence is the paper in which the Turing Test is described as an alternative way to answer the question “can machines think?” (Turing 433). Since the development of Turing’s original paper, there has been a tremendous amount of advancement in the field of artificial intelligence. The field has made its way into art classification as well as the medical industry. The main concept researched in …

How Interval Measurement Uncertainty Affects The Results Of Data Processing: A Calculus-Based Approach To Computing The Range Of A Box, Andrew Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical applications, we are interested in the values of the quantities y1, ..., ym which are difficult (or even impossible) to measure directly. A natural idea to estimate these values is to find easier-to-measure related quantities x1, ..., xn and to use the known relation to estimate the desired values yi. Measurements come with uncertainty, and often, the only thing we know about the actual value of each auxiliary quantity xi is that it belongs to the interval [Xi − Δi, Xi + Δi …

Analysis Of Prosody Around Turn Starts, Gerardo Cervantes, Nigel Ward
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
We are interested in enabling a robot to communicate with more natural timings: to take turns more appropriately. LSTM models have sometime been effective for this, but we found that this to be not helpful for some tasks. This technical report we look for factors that may explain this difference, by examining statistically the prosodic feature values in the vicinity of turn shift in the data. We observe that the apparent informativeness of prosodic features varies greatly from one dataset to another.
Why Asset-Based Approach To Teaching Is More Effective Than The Usual Deficit-Based Approach, And Why The New Approach Is Not Easy To Implement: A Simple Geometric Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Asset-Based Approach To Teaching Is More Effective Than The Usual Deficit-Based Approach, And Why The New Approach Is Not Easy To Implement: A Simple Geometric Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional approach to teaching is based on uncovering deficiencies in student's knowledge and working on these deficiencies. Lately, it has been shown that a more efficient approach to education is instead when we start with the student's strengths (assets), and use these strengths to teach the students; however, this asset-based approach is not easy to implement. In this paper, we provide a simple geometric explanation of why the asset-based approach to teaching is more efficient and why it is not easy to implement.

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for many aspects of interval and fuzzy uncertainty: Why boxes for multi-D uncertainty? What if we only know Hurwicz's optimism-pessimism parameter with interval uncertainty? Why swarms of agents are better than clouds? Which confidence set is the most robust? Why μp in fuzzy clustering? How do degrees of confidence change with time? What is a natural interpretation of Pythagorean and fuzzy degrees of confidence?

Environmental Restoration Database, Joao Nascimento
Environmental Restoration Database, Joao Nascimento
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Environmental restoration projects face many challenges. Public awareness, funding constraints, unpredictable weather, unknown biological/chemical factors and the uncertainty about how the targeted ecosystem will develop work against the planned and ideal restoration.
One way the projects’ efficiency can be improved is by using software tools for data and quality management systems, in order to share information, make field practice follow rules, keep track of maintenance tasks, measure results and, therefore, increase the rate of success by the amount of resources invested.
Since the conception of every project, all resources involved need to be focused and coherent to the final restoration …

Application Of Huffman Data Compression Algorithm In Hashing Computation, Lakshmi Narasimha Devulapalli Venkata,
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Cryptography is the art of protecting information by encrypting the original message into an unreadable format. A cryptographic hash function is a hash function which takes an arbitrary length of the text message as input and converts that text into a fixed length of encrypted characters which is infeasible to invert. The values returned by the hash function are called as the message digest or simply hash values. Because of its versatility, hash functions are used in many applications such as message authentication, digital signatures, and password hashing [Thomsen and Knudsen, 2005].
The purpose of this study is to apply …

Permission-Based Privacy Analysis For Android Applications, Erza Gashi
Theses and Dissertations
While Information and Communication Technology (ICT) trends are moving towards the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile applications are becoming more and more popular. Mostly due to their pervasiveness and the level of interaction with the users, along with the great number of advantages, the mobile applications bring up a great number of privacy related issues as well. These platforms can gather our very sensitive private data by only granting them a list of permissions during the installation process. Additionally, most of the users can find it difficult, or even useless, to analyze system permissions. Thus, their guess of app’s safety …

We analyze the number of tile types t, bins b, and stages necessary to assemble n \times n squares and scaled shapes in the staged tile assembly model. For n \times n squares, we prove \mathcal{O}(\frac{\log{n} - tb - t\log t}{b^2} + \frac{\log \log b}{\log t}) stages suffice and \Omega(\frac{\log{n} - tb - t\log t}{b^2}) are necessary for almost all n. For shapes S with Kolmogorov complexity K(S), we prove \mathcal{O}(\frac{K(S) - tb - t\log t}{b^2} + \frac{\log \log b}{\log t}) stages suffice and \Omega(\frac{K(S) - tb - t\log t}{b^2}) are necessary to assemble a scaled version of S, for …
Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni
Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni
Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations
Optimal control is a control method which provides inputs that minimize a performance index subject to state or input constraints [58]. The existing solutions for finding the exact optimal control solution such as Pontryagin’s minimum principle and dynamic programming suffer from curse of dimensionality in high order dynamical systems. One remedy for this problem is finding near optimal solution instead of the exact optimal solution to avoid curse of dimensionality [31]. A method for finding the approximate optimal solution is through Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) methods which are discussed in the subsequent chapters.
In this dissertation, optimal switching in switched …

Design And Implementation Of An Artificial Neural Network Controller For Quadrotor Flight In Confined Environment, Ahmed Mekky
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Quadrotors offer practical solutions for many applications, such as emergency rescue, surveillance, military operations, videography and many more. For this reason, they have recently attracted the attention of research and industry. Even though they have been intensively studied, quadrotors still suffer from some challenges that limit their use, such as trajectory measurement, attitude estimation, obstacle avoidance, safety precautions, and land cybersecurity. One major problem is flying in a confined environment, such as closed buildings and tunnels, where the aerodynamics around the quadrotor are affected by close proximity objects, which result in tracking performance deterioration, and sometimes instability. To address this …

Investigating Contextual Cues As Indicators For Ema Delivery, Varun Mishra, Byron Lowens, Sarah Lord, Kelly Caine, David Kotz
Computer Science Technical Reports
In this work, we attempt to determine whether the contextual information of a participant can be used to predict whether the participant will respond to a particular Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) prompt. We use a publicly available dataset for our work, and find that by using basic contextual features about the participant's activity, conversation status, audio, and location, we can predict whether an EMA prompt triggered at a particular time will be answered with a precision of 0.647, which is significantly higher than a baseline precision of 0.410. Using this knowledge, the researchers conducting field studies can efficiently schedule EMA …

Privus: Take Back Your Privacy The Effect Of A User-Centered Approach On Privacy Management, Aral Tasher
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid innovations in science and engineering have created a greater opportunity for disruptive technologies to be established at a faster rate. Less than a decade ago mobile, phones were a mere tool for communication, nowadays, we rely on their successors to remind us about our next appointment, what we need from the grocery store, or even where we parked our car. But this assistance comes with a cost; in order to help us, our devices rely on using our personal information like GPS, contacts list and personal notes, –in some cases more information than what the app needs. While there …
Building Panoramic Image Mosaics Of Coral Reefs, Yan Li
Building Panoramic Image Mosaics Of Coral Reefs, Yan Li
Theses and Dissertations
Panoramic image mosaic is an important tool for accessing the preserving condition of coral reefs sites. In recent years, a number of methods and applications are made to create panoramic image mosaics by stitching a sequence of images together to get a wider field of view. However, it is not appropriate to apply existing methods and applications to our dataset directly. The main reason is that our underwater videos are acquired not by underwater machines, but coral-conservation researchers. In this case, the stitching process becomes more challenging due to a number of problems: illumination changes, large parallax, water drift, as …
