Detecting Metagame Shifts In League Of Legends Using Unsupervised Learning, Dustin P. Peabody May 2018

Detecting Metagame Shifts In League Of Legends Using Unsupervised Learning, Dustin P. Peabody

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Over the many years since their inception, the complexity of video games has risen considerably. With this increase in complexity comes an increase in the number of possible choices for players and increased difficultly for developers who try to balance the effectiveness of these choices. In this thesis we demonstrate that unsupervised learning can give game developers extra insight into their own games, providing them with a tool that can potentially alert them to problems faster than they would otherwise be able to find. Specifically, we use DBSCAN to look at League of Legends and the metagame players have formed …

Applications Of Artificial Intelligence In Power Systems, Samin Rastgoufard May 2018

Applications Of Artificial Intelligence In Power Systems, Samin Rastgoufard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Artificial intelligence tools, which are fast, robust and adaptive can overcome the drawbacks of traditional solutions for several power systems problems. In this work, applications of AI techniques have been studied for solving two important problems in power systems.

The first problem is static security evaluation (SSE). The objective of SSE is to identify the contingencies in planning and operations of power systems. Numerical conventional solutions are time-consuming, computationally expensive, and are not suitable for online applications. SSE may be considered as a binary-classification, multi-classification or regression problem. In this work, multi-support vector machine is combined with several evolutionary computation …

Df 2.0: Designing An Automated, Privacy Preserving, And Efficient Digital Forensic Framework, Robin Verma, Jayaprakash Govindaraj, Gaurav Gupta

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The current state of digital forensic investigation is continuously challenged by the rapid technological changes, the increase in the use of digital devices (both the heterogeneity and the count), and the sheer volume of data that these devices could contain. Although it is not directly related to the performance of Digital Forensic Investigation process, preventing data privacy violations during the process is also a big challenge. The investigator gets full access to the forensic image including suspect's private data which may be sensitive at times as well as entirely unrelated to the given case under investigation. With a notion that …

Non-Use Of A Mobile Phone During Conducting Crime Can Also Be Evidential, Vinod Polpaya Bhattathiripad Ph D

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Cyber-clever criminals who are aware of the consequence of using mobile phones during conducting crimes often stay away from their phones while involved in crimes. Some of them even change their handset and SIM card, subsequently. This article looks into how, intentional disassociation (and even unintentional non-use) of mobile phone in (non-cyber) crimes, can become evidential clues of the perpetrators’ involvement in criminal acts. With the help of a recent judicial episode, this article reveals how extremely careful and masterful handling of extensive and voluminous Call Details Records and tower dumps by a cyber-savvy investigating official can unearth evidential clues …

Forensic Analysis Of The Exfat Artifacts, Yves Vandermeer, An Lekhac, Tahar Kechadi, Joe Carthy May 2018

Forensic Analysis Of The Exfat Artifacts, Yves Vandermeer, An Lekhac, Tahar Kechadi, Joe Carthy

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Although keeping some basic concepts inherited from FAT32, the exFAT file system introduces many differences, such as the new mapping scheme of directory entries. The combination of exFAT mapping scheme with the allocation of bitmap files and the use of FAT leads to new forensic possibilities. The recovery of deleted files, including fragmented ones and carving becomes more accurate compared with former forensic processes. Nowadays, the accurate and sound forensic analysis is more than ever needed, as there is a high risk of erroneous interpretation. Indeed, most of the related work in the literature on exFAT structure and forensics, is …

Measuring Symmetry In Real-World Scenes Using Derivatives Of The Medial Axis Radius Function, Morteza Rezanejad, John D. Wilder, Kaleem Siddiqi, Sven Dickinson, Allan Jepson, Dirk B. Walther May 2018

Measuring Symmetry In Real-World Scenes Using Derivatives Of The Medial Axis Radius Function, Morteza Rezanejad, John D. Wilder, Kaleem Siddiqi, Sven Dickinson, Allan Jepson, Dirk B. Walther

MODVIS Workshop

Symmetry has been shown to be an important principle that guides the grouping of scene information. Previously, we have described a method for measuring the local, ribbon symmetry content of line-drawings of real-world scenes (Rezanejad, et al., MODVIS 2017), and we demonstrated that this information has important behavioral consequences (Wilder, et al., MODIVS 2017). Here, we describe a continuous, local version of the symmetry measure, that allows for both ribbon and taper symmetry to be captured. Our original method looked at the difference in the radius between successive maximal discs along a symmetric axis. The number of radii differences in …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Forensic Investigation Process: Dji Phantom 3 Drone As A Case Study, Alan Roder, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Nhien-A Le-Khac

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Drones (also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles – UAVs) are a potential source of evidence in a digital investigation, partly due to their increasing popularity in our society. However, existing UAV/drone forensics generally rely on conventional digital forensic investigation guidelines such as those of ACPO and NIST, which may not be entirely fit-for-purpose. In this paper, we identify the challenges associated with UAV/drone forensics. We then explore and evaluate existing forensic guidelines, in terms of their effectiveness for UAV/drone forensic investigations. Next, we present our set of guidelines for UAV/drone investigations. Finally, we demonstrate how the proposed guidelines can be …

Detection And Recovery Of Anti-Forensic (Vault) Applications On Android Devices, Michaila Duncan, Umit Karabiyik

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Significant number of mobile device users currently employ anti-forensics applications, also known as vault or locker applications, on their mobile devices in order to hide files such as photos. Because of this, investigators are required to spend a large portion of their time manually looking at the applications installed on the device. Currently, there is no automated method of detecting these anti-forensics applications on an Android device. This work presents the creation and testing of a vault application detection system to be used on Android devices. The main goal of this work is twofold: (i) Detecting and reporting the presence …

Hypervisor-Based Active Data Protection For Integrity And Confidentiality Of Dynamically Allocated Memory In Windows Kernel, Igor Korkin May 2018

Hypervisor-Based Active Data Protection For Integrity And Confidentiality Of Dynamically Allocated Memory In Windows Kernel, Igor Korkin

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

One of the main issues in the OS security is providing trusted code execution in an untrusted environment. During executing, kernel-mode drivers dynamically allocate memory to store and process their data: Windows core kernel structures, users’ private information, and sensitive data of third-party drivers. All this data can be tampered with by kernel-mode malware. Attacks on Windows-based computers can cause not just hiding a malware driver, process privilege escalation, and stealing private data but also failures of industrial CNC machines. Windows built-in security and existing approaches do not provide the integrity and confidentiality of the allocated memory of third-party drivers. …

Using Empirical Recurrence Rates Ratio For Time Series Data Similarity, Moinak Bhaduri, Justin Zhan May 2018

Using Empirical Recurrence Rates Ratio For Time Series Data Similarity, Moinak Bhaduri, Justin Zhan

Computer Science Faculty Research

Several methods exist in classification literature to quantify the similarity between two time series data sets. Applications of these methods range from the traditional Euclidean type metric to the more advanced Dynamic Time Warping metric. Most of these adequately address structural similarity but fail in meeting goals outside it. For example, a tool that could be excellent to identify the seasonal similarity between two time series vectors might prove inadequate in the presence of outliers. In this paper, we have proposed a unifying measure for binary classification that performed well while embracing several aspects of dissimilarity. This statistic is gaining …

Impacts Of Simultaneous Multislice Acquisition On Sensitivity And Specificity In Fmri, Benjamin B. Risk, Mary C. Kociuba, Daniel B. Rowe May 2018

Impacts Of Simultaneous Multislice Acquisition On Sensitivity And Specificity In Fmri, Benjamin B. Risk, Mary C. Kociuba, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Simultaneous multislice (SMS) imaging can be used to decrease the time between acquisition of fMRI volumes, which can increase sensitivity by facilitating the removal of higher-frequency artifacts and boosting effective sample size. The technique requires an additional processing step in which the slices are separated, or unaliased, to recover the whole brain volume. However, this may result in signal “leakage” between aliased locations, i.e., slice “leakage,” and lead to spurious activation (decreased specificity). SMS can also lead to noise amplification, which can reduce the benefits of decreased repetition time. In this study, we evaluate the original slice-GRAPPA (no leak block) …

Afterimage: Collecting And Replaying Geospatial Memory, Hyun Ji Seong May 2018

Afterimage: Collecting And Replaying Geospatial Memory, Hyun Ji Seong

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

AfterImage is an interactive wall consisted of light detecting units controlled by microprocessors. Each light-sensing unit determines user proximity through the intensity of the shadow being cast, turning these shadows into bright snapshots portrayed through built-in LED lights. AfterImage extends the concept of memory to a space and location by imitating two unique characteristics of human memory: a lingering afterimage effect for intense stimuli, and a flashback of events that happened in the past. To create a more organic representation of flashbacks, a native data structure was explored. Through the collection and reproduction of geospatial memory, AfterImage attempts to change …

A Machine Learning Approach To Predict First-Year Student Retention Rates At University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Aditya Rajuladevi May 2018

A Machine Learning Approach To Predict First-Year Student Retention Rates At University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Aditya Rajuladevi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

First-year student retention rates for a four-year institution refers to the percentage of First-time Full-time students from the previous fall who return to the same institution for the following fall. First-year retention rates act as an important indicator of the student satisfaction as well as the performance of the university. Moreover, universities with low retention rates may face a decline in the admissions of talented students with a notable loss of tuition fees and contributions from alumni. Therefore, it is important for universities to formulate strategies to identify students who are at risk of not being retained and take necessary …

Medial Axis Approximation And Regularization, Yajie Yan May 2018

Medial Axis Approximation And Regularization, Yajie Yan

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Medial axis is a classical shape descriptor. Among many good properties, medial axis is thin, centered in the shape, and topology preserving. Therefore, it is constantly sought after by researchers and practitioners in their respective domains. However, two barriers remain that hinder wide adoption of medial axis.

First, exact computation of medial axis is very difficult. Hence, in practice medial axis is approximated discretely. Though abundant approximation methods exist, they are either limited in scalability, insufficient in theoretical soundness, or susceptible to numerical issues. Second, medial axis is easily disturbed by small noises on its defining shape. A majority of …

Advancing Community Detection Using Keyword Attribute Search, Sanket Chobe May 2018

Advancing Community Detection Using Keyword Attribute Search, Sanket Chobe

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

As social network structures evolve constantly, it is necessary to design an efficient mechanism to track the influential nodes and accurate communities in the networks. The attributed graph represents the information about properties of the nodes and relationships between different nodes, hence, this attribute information can be used for more accurate community detection. Current techniques of community detection do not consider the attribute or keyword information associated with the nodes in a graph. In this thesis, I propose a novel ideal of online community detection using a technique of keyword search over the attributed graph. First, the influential attributes are …

Algorithms For Tower Placement On Terrain, Binay Dahal May 2018

Algorithms For Tower Placement On Terrain, Binay Dahal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

We review existing algorithms for the placement of towers for illuminating 1.5D and 2.5D terrains. Finding the minimum number of towers of zero height to illuminate 1.5D terrain is known to be NP-Hard. We present approximation algorithms for solving two variations of the tower placement problem. In the first variation, we consider the placement of a single tower of given height to maximize visibility coverage. In the second variation, we consider the problem of placing reduced number of common height towers to cover the entire terrain. Algorithms for solving both problem variations are based on discretizing the problem domain by …

Elliptic Cryptosystem, Elizabeth Dettrey May 2018

Elliptic Cryptosystem, Elizabeth Dettrey

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The elliptic cryptographic algorithm first presented in a paper by E. F. Dettrey and E. A. Yfantis is examined and explained in this thesis. The algorithm is based on the group operations of a set of points generated from an ellipse of arbitrary radii, and arbitrary center in the case of the generalized version, modulo a large prime. The security of the algorithm depends on the difficulty of solving a discrete logarithm in the groups used by this algorithm. While the elliptic cryptographic algorithm is not the most secure among the discrete logarithm based paradigm of cryptosystems for a given …

Machine Learning Applications In Graduation Prediction At The University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Elliott Collin Ploutz May 2018

Machine Learning Applications In Graduation Prediction At The University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Elliott Collin Ploutz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Graduation rates of four-year institutions are an increasingly important metric to incoming students and for ranking universities. To increase completion rates, universities must analyze available student data to understand trends and factors leading to graduation. Using predictive modeling, incoming students can be assessed as to their likelihood of completing a degree. If students are predicted to be most likely to drop out, interventions can be enacted to increase retention and completion rates.

At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), four-year graduation rates are 15% and six-year graduation rates are 39%. To improve these rates, we have gathered seven years …

Design On High Performance Nanoscale Cmos Circuits With Low Temperature Sensitivity, Ming Zhu May 2018

Design On High Performance Nanoscale Cmos Circuits With Low Temperature Sensitivity, Ming Zhu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With the rapid development of integrated circuit (IC) design and manufacturing technology, the transistor size now can be shrunk into only couple of nanometers whereas billions of transistors can be squeezed into a square millimeter, providing unprecedented computation power. However, accompanied with continuous device miniaturization and increased integration density is the explosive growth of on-chip power dissipation and a wide range of temperature fluctuation, which can heavily and negatively affect the delay performance of the circuit, or in the worst case, the circuit may malfunction and the system can be unreliable. Therefore, improved performance resilience against temperature variations has become …

Reversible And Irreversible Potentials And An Inaccuracy In Popular Models In The Fuel Cell Literature, Uday K. Chakraborty May 2018

Reversible And Irreversible Potentials And An Inaccuracy In Popular Models In The Fuel Cell Literature, Uday K. Chakraborty

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Modeling is an integral part of fuel cell design and development. This paper identifies a long-standing inaccuracy in the fuel cell modeling literature. Specifically, it discusses an inexact insertion, in popular models, of cell/stack current into Nernst’s equation in the derivation of output (load) voltage. The origin of the inaccuracy is traced to the nature of reversible and irreversible potentials (equilibrium and non-equilibrium states) in the cell. The significance of the inaccuracy is explained in the context of the electrochemistry and thermodynamics of the fuel cell.

Multi-Worker-Aware Task Planning In Real-Time Spatial Crowdsourcing, Qian Tao, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Lei Chen, Ke Xu May 2018

Multi-Worker-Aware Task Planning In Real-Time Spatial Crowdsourcing, Qian Tao, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Lei Chen, Ke Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatial crowdsourcing emerges as a new computing paradigm with the development of mobile Internet and the ubiquity of mobile devices. The core of many real-world spatial crowdsourcing applications is to assign suitable tasks to proper workers in real time. Many works only assign a set of tasks to each worker without making the plan how to perform the assigned tasks. Others either make task plans only for a single worker or are unable to operate in real time. In this paper, we propose a new problem called the Multi-Worker-Aware Task Planning (MWATP) problem in the online scenario, in which we …

Tensorflow, a library for machine learning, is applied to classify

malware images with …

Player-Response: On The Nature Of Interactive Narratives As Literature, Lee Feldman May 2018

Player-Response: On The Nature Of Interactive Narratives As Literature, Lee Feldman

English (MA) Theses

In recent years, having evolved beyond solely play-based interactions, it is now possible to analyze video games alongside other narrative forms, such as novels and films. Video games now involve rich stories that require input and interaction on behalf of the player. This level of agency likens video games to a kind of modern hypertext, networking and weaving various narrative threads together, something which traditional modes of media lack. When examined from the lens of reader-response criticism, this interaction deepens even further, acknowledging the player’s experience as a valid interpretation of a video game’s plot. The wide freedom of choice …

Understanding The Gender Gap In Computer Science Undergraduate Academics, Mikaela Goldrich May 2018

Understanding The Gender Gap In Computer Science Undergraduate Academics, Mikaela Goldrich

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

There is a gender gap in technical fields that has persisted through generations. In my research, I focus on the gender gap within computer science (CS) undergraduate academics. Diversity in technical fields starts with diversity in academics. Studies have shown that girls who are exposed to CS in or before high school are more likely to study CS in college. [1] Other factors such as role models, life goals, and perception of CS also influence a girl’s decision. I surveyed UMW students in different stages of their CS degrees, in addition to students who only participated in an introductory CS …

The Restoration Of Unix: Emulating Unix Version 1.0 On A 16-Bit Dec Pdp 11/20, John J. Gilmore Jr. May 2018

The Restoration Of Unix: Emulating Unix Version 1.0 On A 16-Bit Dec Pdp 11/20, John J. Gilmore Jr.

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Next year, the one of the world’s first Operating Systems (OS) UNIX will celebrate its 50th birthday. This relic of the past is objectively one of the most important creations that has ever influenced the field of Computer Science. However, mysteries of this artifact were discovered in 1995. Two engineers, Paul Vixie and Keith Bostic, dug deep enough to find several DEC tapes “under the floor of the computer room [at Bell Labs]” (UNIX Past) which held several original binary files for UNIX. With much help from several individuals, these two engineers were able to reverse engineer the binary tapes …
