Modeling Of Cloud-Based Digital Twins For Smart Manufacturing With Mt Connect, Liwen Hu, Ngoc-Tu Nguyen, Wenjin Tao, Ming-Chuan Leu, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Rakib Shahriar, S M Nahian Al Sunny

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The common modeling of digital twins uses an information model to describe the physical machines. The integration of digital twins into productive cyber-physical cloud manufacturing (CPCM) systems imposes strong demands such as reducing overhead and saving resources. In this paper, we develop and investigate a new method for building cloud-based digital twins (CBDT), which can be adapted to the CPCM platform. Our method helps reduce computing resources in the information processing center for efficient interactions between human users and physical machines. We introduce a knowledge resource center (KRC) built on a cloud server for information intensive applications. An information model …

Topographic Maps: Image Processing And Path-Finding, Calin Washington Jun 2018

Topographic Maps: Image Processing And Path-Finding, Calin Washington

Master's Theses

Topographic maps are an invaluable tool for planning routes through unfamiliar terrain. However, accurately planning routes on topographic maps is a time- consuming and error-prone task. One factor is the difficulty of interpreting the map itself, which requires prior knowledge and practice. Another factor is the difficulty of making choices between possible routes that have different trade-offs between length and the terrain they traverse.

To alleviate these difficulties, this thesis presents a system to automate the process of finding routes on scanned images of topographic maps. The system allows users to select any two points on a topographic map and …

Funqual: User-Defined, Statically-Checked Call Graph Constraints In C++, Andrew P. Nelson Jun 2018

Funqual: User-Defined, Statically-Checked Call Graph Constraints In C++, Andrew P. Nelson

Master's Theses

Static analysis tools can aid programmers by reporting potential programming mistakes prior to the execution of a program. Funqual is a static analysis tool that reads C++17 code ``in the wild'' and checks that the function call graph follows a set of rules which can be defined by the user. This sort of analysis can help the programmer to avoid errors such as accidentally calling blocking functions in time-sensitive contexts or accidentally allocating memory in heap-sensitive environments. To accomplish this, we create a type system whereby functions can be given user-defined type qualifiers and where users can define their own …

Compiler Optimization Effects On Register Collisions, Jonathan S. Tan Jun 2018

Compiler Optimization Effects On Register Collisions, Jonathan S. Tan

Master's Theses

We often want a compiler to generate executable code that runs as fast as possible. One consideration toward this goal is to keep values in fast registers to limit the number of slower memory accesses that occur. When there are not enough physical registers available for use, values are ``spilled'' to the runtime stack. The need for spills is discovered during register allocation wherein values in use are mapped to physical registers. One factor in the efficacy of register allocation is the number of values in use at one time (register collisions). Register collision is affected by compiler optimizations that …

Analyzing Global Cyber Attack Correlates Through An Open Database, Brady Benjamin Aiello Jun 2018

Analyzing Global Cyber Attack Correlates Through An Open Database, Brady Benjamin Aiello

Master's Theses

As humanity becomes more reliant on digital storage and communication for every aspect of life, cyber attacks pose a growing threat. However, cyber attacks are generally understood as individual incidents reported in technological circles, sometimes tied to a particular vulnerability. They are not generally understood through the macroscopic lens of statistical analysis spanning years over several countries and sectors, leaving researchers largely ignorant of the larger trends and correlates between attacks. This is large part due to the lack of a coherent and open database of prominent attacks. Most data about cyber attacks has been captured using a repository of …

Time-Space Tradeoffs For The Memory Game, Yining Chen, Amit Chakrabarti Jun 2018

Time-Space Tradeoffs For The Memory Game, Yining Chen, Amit Chakrabarti

Computer Science Technical Reports

A single-player game of Memory is played with n distinct pairs of cards, with the cards in each pair bearing identical pictures. The cards are laid face-down. A move consists of revealing two cards, chosen adaptively. If these cards match, i.e., they bear the same picture, they are removed from play; otherwise, they are turned back to face down. The object of the game is to clear all cards while minimizing the number of moves. Past works have thoroughly studied the expected number of moves required, assuming optimal play by a player has that has perfect memory. In this work, …

The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson Jun 2018

The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson

Computer Engineering

Modern chess engines have the ability to augment their evaluation by using massive tables containing billions of positions and their memorized solutions. This report examines the importance of these tables to better understand the circumstances under which they should be used. The analysis conducted in this paper empirically examines differences in size and speed of memorized positions and their impacts on engine strength. Using this technique, situations where memorized tables improve play (and situations where they do not) are discovered.

Towards Intelligent Intrusion Detection Systems For Cloud Computing, Mohammed J. Aljebreen

Theses and Dissertations

Statistics presented in the background chapter show the tremendous number of security breaches that occurred in recent years. Furthermore, securing the new advanced technologies has become more challenging. Cloud computing and containers are among those emerging technologies that have introduced security challenges, and it is necessary that they be addressed. One of the main features of both cloud and container technologies is the sharing of resources of both hardware and software. The challenge becomes more complex when running containers in a cloud environment. Thus, advancing the security of container in the cloud environment is necessary, especially becasause of the lack …

Tgmi: An Efficient Algorithm For Identifying Pathway Regulators Through Evaluation Of Triple-Gene Mutual Interaction, Chathura J. Gunasekara, Kui Zhang, Wenping Deng, Laura E. Brown, Hairong Wei Jun 2018

Tgmi: An Efficient Algorithm For Identifying Pathway Regulators Through Evaluation Of Triple-Gene Mutual Interaction, Chathura J. Gunasekara, Kui Zhang, Wenping Deng, Laura E. Brown, Hairong Wei

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Despite their important roles, the regulators for most metabolic pathways and biological processes remain elusive. Presently, the methods for identifying metabolic pathway and biological process regulators are intensively sought after. We developed a novel algorithm called triple-gene mutual interaction (TGMI) for identifying these regulators using high-throughput gene expression data. It first calculated the regulatory interactions among triple gene blocks (two pathway genes and one transcription factor (TF)), using conditional mutual information, and then identifies significantly interacted triple genes using a newly identified novel mutual interaction measure (MIM), which was substantiated to reflect strengths of regulatory interactions within each triple gene …

Patient Preferences For Authentication And Security: A Comparison Study Of Younger And Older Patients, Ann Fruhling, Devika Ramachandran, Tamara Bernard, Ryan Schuetzler, John R. Windle

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications

We examine authentication and security preferences of younger versus older patients in the healthcare domain. Previous research has investigated users' perception of the acceptability of various forms of authentication in nonhealthcare domains, but not patients’ preferences. First, we developed an interactive prototype to test three authentication methods: passwords, pattern, and voice. Our results indicate that younger patients prefer passwords by a significant margin. Older patients indicated more mixed preferences. In addition, we evaluated the level of security patients desired for protection of health information compared to financial information. We found no difference based on age: both groups felt financial security …

“Musical Exercise” For People With Visual Impairments: A Preliminary Study With The Blindfolded, Ridwan Ahmed Khan, Myounghoon Jeon, Tejin Yoon

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Performing independent physical exercise is critical to maintain one's good health, but it is specifically hard for people with visual impairments. To address this problem, we have developed a Musical Exercise platform for people with visual impairments so that they can perform exercise in a good form consistently. We designed six different conditions, including blindfolded or visual without audio conditions, and blindfolded or visual with two different types of audio feedback (continuous vs. discrete) conditions. Eighteen sighted participants participated in the experiment, by doing two exercises - squat and wall sit with all six conditions. The results show that Musical …

Edge-Unfolding Nearly Flat Convex Caps, Joseph O'Rourke Jun 2018

Edge-Unfolding Nearly Flat Convex Caps, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The main result of this paper is a proof that a nearly flat, acutely triangulated convex cap C in ℝ3 has an edge-unfolding to a non-overlapping polygon in the plane. A convex cap is the intersection of the surface of a convex polyhedron and a halfspace. "Nearly flat" means that every outer face normal forms a sufficiently small angle φ < Φ with the z-axis orthogonal to the halfspace bounding plane. The size of Φ depends on the acuteness gap α: if every triangle angle is at most π/2 - α, then Φ ≈ 0.36√α suffices; e.g., for α = 3°, Φ ≈ 5°. The proof employs the recent concepts of angle-monotone and radially monotone curves. The proof is constructive, leading to a polynomial-time algorithm for finding the edge-cuts, at worst O(n); a version has been implemented.

Worker Activity Recognition In Smart Manufacturing Using Imu And Semg Signals With Convolutional Neural Networks, Wenjin Tao, Ze-Hao Lai, Ming-Chuan Leu, Zhaozheng Yin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a smart manufacturing system involving workers, recognition of the worker's activity can be used for quantification and evaluation of the worker's performance, as well as to provide onsite instructions with augmented reality. In this paper, we propose a method for activity recognition using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals obtained from a Myo armband. The raw 10-channel IMU signals are stacked to form a signal image. This image is transformed into an activity image by applying Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT) and then fed into a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for feature extraction, resulting in a high-level …

Verifiably Encrypted Cascade-Instantiable Blank Signatures To Secure Progressive Decision Management, Yujue Wang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng Jun 2018

Verifiably Encrypted Cascade-Instantiable Blank Signatures To Secure Progressive Decision Management, Yujue Wang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce the notion of verifiably encrypted cascade-instantiable blank signatures (CBS) in a multi-user setting. In CBS, there is a delegation chain that starts with an originator and is followed by a sequence of proxies. The originator creates and signs a template, which may comprise fixed fields and exchangeable fields. Thereafter, each proxy along the delegation chain is able to make an instantiation of the template from the choices passed down from her direct predecessor, before generating a signature for her instantiation. First, we present a non-interactive basic CBS construction that does not rely on any shared …

Libraryguru: Api Recommendation For Android Developers, Weizhao Yuan, Hoang H. Nguyen, Lingxiao Jiang, Yuting Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developing modern mobile applications often require the uses of many libraries specific for the mobile platform, which can be overwhelmingly too many for application developers to find what are needed for a functionality and where and how to use them properly. This paper presents a tool, named LibraryGuru, to recommend suitable Android APIs for given functionality descriptions. It not only recommends functional APIs that can be invoked for implementing the functionality, but also recommends event callback APIs that are inherent in the Android framework and need to be overridden in the application. LibraryGuru internally builds correlation databases among various functionality …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The emergence of augmented reality devices such as Google Glass and Microsoft Hololens has opened up a new class of vision sensing applications. Those applications often require the ability to continuously capture and analyze contextual information from video streams. They often adopt various deep learning algorithms such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) to achieve high recognition accuracy while facing severe challenges to run computationally intensive deep learning algorithms on resource-constrained mobile devices. In this paper, we propose and explore a new class of compression technique called D-Pruner to efficiently prune redundant parameters within a CNN model to run the model …

An Economic Analysis Of Disintermediation On Crowdfunding Platforms, Jianqing Chen, Ling Ge, Zhiling Guo Jun 2018

An Economic Analysis Of Disintermediation On Crowdfunding Platforms, Jianqing Chen, Ling Ge, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Prosocial crowdfunding platforms can work through direct peer-to-peer (P2P) lending or through intermediaries, incurring different costs to borrowers and lenders. This study investigates the incentives of lenders and borrowers’ and how they would choose between the two types of platforms. We model the intermediary as a profit maximizer who filters projects, provides high quality borrowers with access to the platform, and ensures repayment rate to lenders. Our initial findings suggest that the introduction of direct P2P lending platform enables the intermediary to reduce its interest rate and to raise its screening threshold on the intermediated platform. The P2P lending platform …

Analysing Multi-Point Multi-Frequency Machine Vibrations Using Optical Sampling, Dibyendu Roy, Avik Ghose, Tapas Chakravarty, Sushovan Mukherjee, Arpan Pal, Archan Misra Jun 2018

Analysing Multi-Point Multi-Frequency Machine Vibrations Using Optical Sampling, Dibyendu Roy, Avik Ghose, Tapas Chakravarty, Sushovan Mukherjee, Arpan Pal, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vibration analysis is a key troubleshooting methodology for assessing the health of factory machinery. We propose an unobtrusive framework for at-a-distance visual estimation of such (possibly high frequency) vibrations, using a low fps (frames-per-second) camera that may, for example, be mounted on a worker's smart-glass. Our key innovation is to use an external stroboscopic light source (that, for example, may be provided by an assistive robot), to illuminate the machine with multiple mutually-prime strobing frequencies, and use the resulting aliased signals to efficiently estimate the different vibration frequencies via an enhanced version of the Chinese Remainder Theorem. Experimental results show …

Assessing The Accuracy Of Four Popular Face Recognition Tools For Inferring Gender, Age, And Race, Soon-Gyu Jung, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak, Joni Salminen, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this research, we evaluate four widely used face detection tools, which are Face++, IBM Bluemix Visual Recognition, AWS Rekognition, and Microsoft Azure Face API, using multiple datasets to determine their accuracy in inferring user attributes, including gender, race, and age. Results show that the tools are generally proficient at determining gender, with accuracy rates greater than 90%, except for IBM Bluemix. Concerning race, only one of the four tools provides this capability, Face++, with an accuracy rate of greater than 90%, although the evaluation was performed on a high-quality dataset. Inferring age appears to be a challenging problem, as …

Optimization Of A Cyclic Express Subway Service, Hai Wang, Jiangang Jin, Jingfeng Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With rapid population growth and increasing demand for urban mobility, metropolitan areas such as Singapore, Tokyo, and Shanghai are increasingly dependent on public transport systems. Various strategies are proposed to improve the service quality and capacity of bus and subway systems. Express trains-i.e., trains that skip certain stations-are commonly used, because they can travel at higher speeds, potentially reduce travel time, and serve more passengers. In this paper, we study cyclic express subway service (CESS), in which express trains provide routine transport service with cyclic (periodic) station-skip patterns that can be used in daily service. We propose an exact Mixed …

Column Generation Approach For Feeder Vessel Routing And Synchronization At A Congested Transshipment Port, Jian G. Jin, Qiang Meng, Hai Wang Jun 2018

Column Generation Approach For Feeder Vessel Routing And Synchronization At A Congested Transshipment Port, Jian G. Jin, Qiang Meng, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With increasing container-shipping traffic in major transshipment ports, unsynchronized shipping services at hub ports usually lead to loss of transshipment connections, significant vessel port-stay time, and congestion. This calls for the design of feeder vessel services to pick up from and deliver containers to neighboring local ports, and, at the same time, synchronize them with long-haul services in a manner that enables efficient container transshipment. In this paper, we present a mixed integer linear programming model to optimize the feeder vessel routes and hub port synchronization with an objective to minimize the total operating and connection cost. We exploit the …

Movespace: On-Body Athletic Interaction For Running And Cycling, Velko Vechev, Alexandru Dancu, Simon T. Perrault, Quentin Xavier Louis Roy, Morten Fjeld, Shengdong Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wearables are increasingly used during training to quantify performance and provide valuable real-time information. However, interacting with these devices in motion may disrupt the movements of the activity. We propose a method of interaction involving tapping specific locations on the body, identify candidate locations for running and cycling, and compare them in a series of controlled experiments with athletes. A purpose-built prototype measures speed of interaction and gives feedback cues for athletes to report the physical effects on the activity itself. Our results suggest that specific locations are faster and have minimal disruption to movement, even under induced fatigue conditions. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Energy overheads continue to be a major impediment for wearable based activity recognition systems. We proposed a hybrid approach, which combines wearable-based human sensing with object interaction tracking, for robust detection of ADLs in smart homes. Our proposed framework includes: (a) battery less, low sampling rate, wearable RF sensor tags, that are powered intermittently by an RFID reader, and (b) additional passive RF tags, mounted on daily use objects, that capture the presence and use of specific objects while performing such ADLs. Using an initial experimental set up, we show the ability to recognize activities like eating, typing and reading, …
